ITunes unable to update iPod (photo)

When I attempt to 'update ipod' itunes beings it's thing but, then reports that "the disk could not be read from or written to".
I do not belive that this is an iPod issue, more a software one.
I also noticed that whilst attempting to copy to the ipod, the .Mac sync (menu bar) icon is rotating. When I click 'Ok' on the warning dialogue box, the sync stops! also when I click on the sync icon it reports that it was last synced earlier this evening.
I have never noticed this before, but then I was never looking! Does anyone know about or encountered this before? and could this be responsible for itunes not updating my ipod??
Any help appreciated.

  • Any news of updating ipod photo to ipod video

guys.. is there any news about updating ipod photo to ipod video in the future??? i'm so darn pis$ed after looking at the ipod video... i have an ipod photo 30 gig and i just feel that it's really unfair for other ipod with colour display users!!!!!!!!!!
anyone here would be kind enough to calm me down!!

    Bryan,
posts like this are in my opinion quite inappropriate and immature. I can agree on the fact that at the time of purchase the iPod purchased was exactly to specifications, but if a day/week/month later you can get more (10 GB and video capability) for the same price would you not feel cheated in a certain way? Just imagine it happening with anything other than a technological advancement and imagine it happening to YOU.
Anyway, it would be a very nice gesture for us Apple iPod enthusiasts to be provided with a firmware upgrade if the technology of their iPods is capable of handling videos. I for example am a Windows deciple, but as with everything, having listened to the right reasons, was contemplating to convert to Apple. Let's see how they handle this issue going forward.

  • Unable to update iPod after upgrading to iTunes 7.0.1.

Ever since upgrading to iTunes 7.0.1 from 6.x I have been unable to update my iPod. (60Gb with Video). It says on inserting my iPod a new version is available (1.2) from 1.1.2
I get "The iPod "name" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1417)".
I have tried the standard things... reset internet connection, restart PC, uninstall and reinstall iTunes...
    Anyone resolved this problem?

I get "The iPod "name" could not be updated. An unknown error occurred (1417)".
some folks have been having some success with the 1417/1418 using eboncairn's technique:

  • ITunes won't update iPod

iTunes works normally until i want to sync it to my iPod. Then it says the usual "updating iPod" message then freezes. Just iTunes freezes not anything else i'm doing.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I had this same problem when trying to rebuild my iPhoto and iTunes libraries after a hard drive failure. I was able to track the problem down to a few images, that for whatever the reason, would not sync over to the iPod. They looked fine in iPhoto and didn't appear to be corrupted, so I have no idea what was wrong with them. I discovered that this was the case because I was able to sync photos by manually selecting specific photo albums, but I was unable to sync my entire photo library.
Here's the process I used to figure out what images were at fault. For each film roll in my iPhoto library, I did the following:
    1. Created a temporary photo album with all of the images from that roll.
    2. Told iTunes to only sync specific photo albums, not the entire library.
    3. Selected the new temp film roll in iTunes for syncing.
    4. If the sync worked, I knew that film roll was not to blame.
    5. If I got the error, I knew that I had identified the correct roll. Then I did a one-by-one removal of images from the roll until the sync worked.
While this was a very tedious process, it did finally allow me to get my entire photo library to sync over. And, I was able to re-import the faulty images and get those to sync as well. But deleting them first and getting a fresh copy was definitely what was needed here.

  • HT1229 itunes will not update ipod cache for iPhoto 11

My itunes does not update my iphone 4s to the latest pictures loaded onto iphoto 11, no updates available. Any clues as to what is wrong, could Pixelmator be the problem?

Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for the iPod Photo Cache.
Trash it. Start iPhoto and try sync again.

hmmm. if Katie's suggestion about the ipod updater software doesn't pan out (it's certainly worth checking), maybe try investigating this possibility:

  • Itunes appears to update ipod but nothing transferred

Though the computer recognized the ipod, Itunes did not. I did a restored on the ipod, upgraded both itunes and ipod. So now itunes "saw" the ipod and began the ipod setup assistant and then began "transferring" the songs to the ipod. The songs appeared in the itunes list for the ipod, but they were dimmed. The songs did not appear at all in the ipod. After I shut things down and restarted itunes with the ipod attached, it once again started the ipod setup assistant, etc. So what to do. I really need help.
I have the ipod with click wheel, updated to v 3.0, itunes v 6, XP operating system on a Dell 8200. Thanks in advance.

    Here is what I did:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68bb7d3b
Then after that I updated back to iTunes 5 and it is working fine. After that episode I haven't upgraded to iTunes 6.
I'd suggest that you follow the link for Apple feedback in the other post. Maybe if enough of us complain they will fix the problem.

  • Itunes Error After Updating Ipod

I'm having trouble with Itunes - after it updates the Ipod it gives a fatal error ("can't read memory"). If I click "OK" Itunes closes. It does appear to be updating the Ipod.
Here's the basics of what I have:
-ipod model MA146LL (5th gen video)
    -Windows
    -Version 1.2.1 (on ipod)
    Itunes
    -7.0.2.16
Here's the thing that caused the problem:
-Plugged in ipod to computer via usb
    -It auto-launched itunes
-told me an upgrade was available for my ipod - do i want to install 1.2.1 I said yes.
-Updated the ipod with new firmware, and get error message in itunes
Here's the things I've tried to fix it:
-checked ipod and it had 1.2.1 as version
-unplugged ipod from computer, reconnected, it launched itunes, updated ipod and gave error message
    -rebooted computer - same error
-did regsvr32 on file in program files\itunes (something I found while searching discussion groups) - same error
-reset ipod and tried again - same error
-repaired itunes (via add/remove programs) and rebooted - same error
-validated that it actually is updating the ipod (is, removed a few songs and it did)
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Nope, no plug-ins.
I figured it out - here's the story:
I realized that although I got a fatal message, iTunes was still there, and as long as I didn't hit the OK on the message, I could still work in iTunes (I realized this could have screwed things up worse...but...). I Restored the Ipod. Got the same error. Even rebooted the machine and reset the ipod again. Same error.
Then I figured, forget it, I'll just use it with the error message. But, now that I restored my ipod I noticed the Contacts were blank (I'm synching with MS Outlook Contacts). I tried updating the ipod again, couldn't get the contacts. Then I remembered that since getting this new machine my contacts have been screwy in Outlook (click To: to get address list and it can't find it). I fixed that (removed the Outlook address book service and re-added). Went back to itunes to sync and it synched the contacts just fine.
And ... it no longer gives me the error message. So, the error with MS Outlook contacts is what the problem was all along. I'm thinkin.
Thanks for your time and quick reply....

  • Itunes won't update, ipod unusable without it

I have an ipod touch. I have been really good about keeping my itunes up to date. The last version I updated to was early this year. It keeps telling me I need to update but that it failed to update after download and that I need to manually install.
I plugged my ipod in and it asked me to update the ipod software so I did. Then it tells me that the ipod won't work unless I have the 10.0.1. But when I go to itunes and download itunes 10.0.1 it downloads but won't install and tells me I have an invalid drive F:/. I don't even have a drive F. I can't use my ipod now, I turn it on and I have the picture of the ipod being plugged into itunes. But itunes won't update. Nothing online or in any thread I have found has given me a solution. I am very frustrated. Is there anything I can do? Or do I need to uninstall itunes and lose all my music and apps?

I just put a flash drive into a USB port and then it started the install and when it asked where I wanted to put it I changed it from drive F to C.

  • Itunes won't update IPOD after running Updater

I should have known to leave things alone!
Updated Itunes and ran updater. Have a 15gb IPOD m9460ll.
Now everytime I connect the IPOD it runs the wizard asking me to name the ipod and then it looks like it runs and the songs look like they are there, but they are not on the ipod. Update says complete.
I've uninstalled and re-installed itunes, reset the ipod.
    Anybody have any ideas?

    Figured it out!
The updater had assigned a drive letter that was already in use as a network drive. I went into disk management and re-assigned the IPOD to a different drive letter.
Works now. Hey Apple!, check for an available drive letter before you assign it.

  • Itunes doesn't update ipod classic

My ipod is recognized but itunes doesn't update the new tunes to the ipod.  ??  Recently updated OS to Windows 7.

I have had this happen as well. What I had to do was sync the iPod to remove the album and the resync the album back to the Classic. I've had this happen with my iPhones as well. Must be a bug in either the current OS or iTunes versions.

  • Can't update iPod Photo 60 GHz

I have a 60GHz iPod Photo colour display. I used it regularly until about 2 years ago when I bought an iPod touch and didn't need it as much. I've been using it occasionally and also it's been a back-up of my WHOLE music library. Well, suddenly I can't get into it. I'm running Mac OS 10.6.5 on a MacBook Pro 2.2GHz Intel with iTunes 10.1.1. The iPod shows up on my desktop as a locked hard drive. I get a message that says I don't have permission to see the contents, and I can't change the permissions from "custom." Meanwhile it doesn't show up in iTunes at all. However, when I plug it in, it DOES cause iTunes to launch. As well, TuneTech for iPod seems to recognize it just fine and seems to work with it, although I'm afraid to try formatting the drive for fear of losing all the contents. I tried to find an older version of iTunes but with no success. Besides, according to everything I've read, the current iTunes should be able to communicate with the iPod Photo just fine. So what do I do? I want to get a real back-up of my library onto my Time Capsule, then I've promised my niece my old iPod, because I gave her a Boombox with an iPod dock for Christmas, and obviously she doesn't listen to the same music I do. I have an old Quicksilver 867 in storage, but I don't want to have to keep it in my little apartment just so she can add new music to it once in awhile. What do I do? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated! Cheers.

Try to see if you can transfer your music using a program such as Pod2Mac. Then try to format your iPod using Disk Utility or try to connect it to another computer and restore its software.
    Let me know, bye
