Itunes update erased my playlists

Anyone know how to get my playlists back? I downloaded iTunes 7.4.2.4 and now all my playlists are gone. I had gigs and gigs worth...too much to organize again.
Any help??

Hey TheJohnOne,
Thanks for the question. I understand that your iTunes library is missing playlists after updating. The following resource may help to resolve your issue:
No content shows up in iTunes after updating
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967
Resolution
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Download and install the latest version of iTunes.
3. Use the Finder (Mac) or Windows Explorer (Windows) to go to the iTunes folder that contains the iTunes library files:
Mac OS X
/Users/username/Music/iTunes/
Microsoft Windows Windows XP and Windows 2000
\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
Microsoft Windows Windows Vista and Windows 7
\Users\username\Music\iTunes\
4. Drag the iTunes Library file from the above location to the Desktop.
5. Open the Previous iTunes Libraries folder in the iTunes folder.
6. Locate the file named iTunes Library YYYY-MM-DD where YYYY-MM-DD is the date you upgraded iTunes (Year-Month-Day).
7. Drag this file to the iTunes folder (the enclosing folder).
8. Rename this file to iTunes Library.
9. Open iTunes.
You should now see your missing content in iTunes.
If the above does not resolve your issue, you can learn about re-creating your iTunes library:
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists

  • HT1801 Just wondering, does iTunes update my Smart playlist with new songs?

Does iTunes update my Smart playlist with new songs each time I download it or do I have to manually update it myself? If I do, can someone walk me through it. Thanks a bunch

    Yes that should work.
Are you using an "Artist is ..." rule? If so, and if new stuff by onerepublic isn't showing up in the list, check the Artist name on the new songs to make sure it's exactly matching the one in your rule.
For example, I've got music in my library (by the same people) under the artist names Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Godspeed You! Black Emperor ... (different position of the "!") If I set up a smart playlist based on:
Artist is Godspeed You Black Emperor!
It doesn't catch the songs with an Artist name of "Godspeed You! Black Emperor".
To get all the songs showing in a smart playlist, I'd need to adjust the Artist name on one or the other sets of songs so it matches a rule. (Haven't done that myself yet for GYBE, because I haven't worked out where the exclamation mark is actually supposed to go.)

  • Latest iTunes update erased everything on my mac mini

After the latest update of iTunes about 2 weeks ago, nothing works on my mac mini except iTunes. All of my pictures are gone. only 1 cd is still in the library and it will play but the rest, about 97% of my music, is gone. All of my installed applications are missing. Surprisingly my movies are still there and they will play. None of the system applications work any more. Time maching gives me an unknown error when I try to open it. Safari does not exist any more. Any ideas on how to roll back the update?

Frankly if an iTunes update could do that much to your computer then your computer must have been in pretty bad shape to start with in terms of directory corruption, badly set permissions, etc.
The only feasible way to roll back an update is to restore to an earlier copy of your drive using a backup.
I'd start by booting to your installer disc, then use Disk Utilities to verify and repair the drive if necessary.  Once it reports all is clear, boot to your computer's hard drive and use Disk Utility in Utilities to to repair permissions.  The problem with doing this now vs. before all this started is that some damage may have already been done ans might not be reversible without a lot of work, if at all.

  • ITunes update erased my library

I downloaded an update earlier this summer that erased my iTunes library completely (video, music, everything). When I hooked up my iPod, iTunes prompted me by saying that in order to sync the iPod with my now empty iTunes, I'd have to erase my iPod contents. My iPod is the only place where I now have all my music (from CDs AND files bought from iTunes). How can I fix this??

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301749 Try searching for the music. If not, you may be able to bring the contents of your iPod to your computer:

  • ITunes update deleted my playlists. Songs still there, playlists wiped off the Earth.

Last night I updated iTunes and I decided to restart later. Today after I restarted it, all my iTunes playlists were deleted.
All my songs are there, but the playlist is wiped off. Is there a way to restore this/anyone else have this happen to them?

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Would you mind telling me which anti-virus package you use? It may be that it is disturbing iTunes when it tries to write out the fresh database, as it does after almost any activity with your library. I'm noticing more of this type of problem than usual and trying to see if there is any pattern. It may help to prevent a repeat of the problem if you look at the advanced options for your AV package and see if you can find a way to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

  • Iphone Rep tells me...Itunes UPDATE erased my phone....

and theres no way to get my contacts, notes, pics, text history back because it deleted ALLLLL of my backups for its own silly purpose. THEN, saves the last back up its makes WHILE trying to update...and uh OH...THAT ONLY remaining file is "Corrupted". YAAAAAAAYYYY
Gee thanx. So is this true there is nothing I can do to get that corupted back up restored to the phone, or UNDO everything the update did? I Want my stuff back.

    What update?
Is the iTunes application properly located in the Apple designated Applications Folder?
AFTER you Repair Permissions (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility) and remove any "hackies" or beta apps, try these Apple info links:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301749
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313
Disconnect your iPod from the computer BEFORE doing anything in the above. Make sure iTunes is working properly prior to reconnect.

    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • My iTunes keeps erasing my music when safari is open. And Safari (ver 4.1.3) crashes a lot since the last update. Help!

Help! My iTunes occasionally re-imports all of my media erasing my playlists (and it takes to long to do this). I believe this problem is related to the latest update to Safari Ver 4.1.3. My Safari crashes a lot now (about every other day). How do I fix my iTunes. The Safari crashing isn't a big deal but that would be nice to fix too.
    Thanks!

Crashing for me too whenever clicking on "movies" under library.  Just happened with the 10.6 update.  I'm on Snow Leopard.

    Dead in the water, sorry.

  • How do I retain playlists and playcounts in iTunes update 11.1.4.62?

I updated my iTunes to the new version 11.1.4.62 and it did not retain my playcounts and playlists I had created. I copied and renamed the iTunes Library folder before I did the download. I also have an XML document in my folder I copied as well. I also want to transfer all of the music I got from Amazon and other similar sites. None of these songs transfered after the new update.
Can I restore my computer to an earlier time or is there another way of transferring all of the songs with retained playcounts, playlists, etc.?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the tip Brenden. I did this before I attempted to download the new iTunes update. However, none of my play counts or playlists were saved. I also have a problem with none of my music I bought or downloaded from non-iTunes sources show up in iTunes after the new update.
I believe as a last resort, I am going to transfer my music from my iPod onto my computer. Is there a particular software that I can download or purchase that you recommend that will allow me to transfer the music in order for me to keep my playlists and play counts, etc.?
Thanks again for commenting to my original post.
