Itunes/Updater don't see IPOD

I'm having some problems with my new 60gb video IPOD. Itunes recognized it initially, but during syncing something happened and now Itunes and Updater don't see the IPOD at all. My XP computer sees the IPOD as a USB Mass Storage Device with and Ipod and and "unknown component" as part of it. After following all the steps in the help database, I think the problem is that the actual IPOD is somehow corrupted....I need to restore the factory settings. The problem is, that the updater doesn't see the IPOD - it's a catch-22. I tried to bring my ipod to work and got the same issue.
Should I try hooking it up to a mac and doing a restore?
Can I "format" the Ipod under windows explorer?
What is going on??

I'm having the same problem with my iPod. I've had it for 2 weeks and it hasn't worked yet. I just haven't had time to call Apple. I've tried everything on these help pages and the closest I've gotten was having the updater recognize the iPod so that I could hit the "restore" button but after a little thinking, the updater says, "can't mount iPod". I only got the updater to recognize it after unplugging my Internet connection. I'm convinced that these problems are software conflicts. I got rid of the folder with exclamation point by resetting the iPod through diagnostic mode(turn the hold button on then off, hold down the menu and the middle select button until you get the apple, then hold down rewind and the middle select button until you get a menu, choose manual and the option at the bottom of the list is "reset"). The easier way of doing a reset didn't work for me. Of course, since the ipod won't mount, the folder/exclamation point is back. This is so annoying. My last hope is to try using it on older computer that I've cleaned off. The idea of re-installing windows (and everything else) on my main computer is not an option - I have 60 gigs of stuff and junk on there plus software programs and I don't have time to untangle it all right now. I was so psyched to finally get my iPod and I understand that hardware/software has bugs but can ANYONE from Apple please figure this out for us!!

  • HT1390 I just rented a movie on itunes but I don't know how to make it play.  I clicked out of itunes and now when I go back into itunes, I don't see a way to play the movie I just downloaded.  Help.

I am a new at this.  I just rented and downloaded a movie, clicked out of iturnes and now when I go back into itunes, I don't see a way to play the movie that I just downloaded ten minutes ago.  I just want to watch it on my laptop.
    Help.

Welcome to the Apple Community Vane_paranormal.
If you rent a movie on your phone, you have to watch it on your phone, likewise if you rent it from the Apple TV you will have to watch it there.
If you want to watch a rental on multiple devices, rent it from a computer.

  • Windows/ iTunes/ iPod Updater Don't See The Nano

Well, here's the story. I got a refurbished nano after my first broke. Plugged it in, didn't work. Went back 2 an Apple Store, they told me it was a software problem, the guy even had it working. I came back home, uninstalled iTunes, Quicktime, and the iPod updater, before downloading all of them again. Installed 'em all, opened the updater, plug in the iPod... nothing. I'm at the screen where it says "Plug in an iPod to update it," with my iPod sitting plugged in. It doesn't show up in My Computer, or in the system tray, or on iTunes, or in the updater.
BTW... its not my port, i've used several, including the ones for my keyboard/mouse/joystick, so the USB is fine. I'll plug it in and sometimes the apple logo will appear before the iPod restarts. Sometimes, a black-and-white battery logo appears on-screen, showing that its charging, but then that goes away too. So... any suggestions?

When I say the icon dissapears, I mean that it totally dissapears. The icon goes out, the screen goes blank, and theres nothing there at all. It'd be like a regular nano turned off. I'll give you exactly what happens. I plug in the nano to a USB port. The silver logo w/ black background appears, for about 2 seconds. Then, it goes strate to the battery w/ lightning bolt. Then, that dissapears. 1 second later, the same icon flashes, dissapears, then flashes again, before dissapearing for a third time. Then... nothing, no more icon flashes. Just a blank screen.
And yes, I have used every USB port on my computer, including the ones that go to my USB keyboard/mouse. So it isn't the ports.

  • Can't update/restore after intalling itunes 7.0  or see ipod in source list

I have a complicated issue. I just installed itunes 7.0 and my ipod won't show up in the source list (which had been a problem before with 6.0). Thinking this had to do with my Toshiba laptop, I disabled my high-speed usb port. But one of the later steps (to fix the toshiba problem) is to open the ipod updater and then restore the ipod. I can't do either of these because for some reason my updater is the 6.0 version still and gives me an error saying it's no longer supported and i have to use itunes to update (which I can't). I don't know what to do! I need help!

    Hey there
I had issues trying to update my ipod (60g) after upgrading to itunes 7. Finally figured it out!!! I had to disable my Norton internet security - firewall and everything worked fine!!! It took maybe 10-15 mins to update the ipod to version 1.2 - then another 30 minutes to upload all my podcasts. I have no idea why it uploaded each one. Almost like during the update to version 1.2 - my podcasts (only the podcasts) were deleted and then reloaded again. Weird!!!
SO... hopefully you have a firewall that you can disable for about maybe 30 mins - just enough time to let the ipod update then you should be good. took me 4 friggin days to figure this one out!!!!
    Hope this helps!!

  • Everything deleted & iTunes & Updater doesn't recognize iPod

Yeah, that's my problem. Funny thing is, I didn't do anything to the iPod to cause the problem. One day I was just adding songs to the iPod & using it like a hard drive (things I've done before with no problems) & then I turn it on two days later to find all my songs deleted. It was returned to factory settings when I didn't do anything.
I hooked iPod up to my computer & it's not recognized by iTunes or the Updater. My computer, however, recognizes it & says that the iPod has the memory it did before the problem. I read the article for when iPod isn't recognized by iTunes or iPod, but I don't know if this would also apply because I also have the another problem. I didn't try this yet because I gave my iPod to some one to help me. He couldn't solve my problem so I'm turning it over to all of you.
    Thanks so much!

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

  • HT4009 What about upgrading? I can't do that from where I live w/o connecting to my hd. Now with the new changes to ITunes, I don't see how I can upgrade thru the traditional route I took b4. Now what do I do?

What about upgrading apps on your IPhone? I can't do that from where I live w/o connecting directly to my laptop. With Apple's new Itunes page, I don't see how I can navigate successfully now to acheive the same result as before. Hmmm. I would appreciate some quick guidance. Thanks.

With iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar that used to show on previous versions of iTunes via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC. You can then select the Apps part of your iTunes library on that sidebar and on the right-hand side of iTunes click the Check For Updates button at the bottom to see if any of your apps have updates available. Then connect your phone and select it on the sidebar, and on the Apps tab on the right-hand side click the Sync button at the bottom of it to copy the updates over

  • Shuffle On Desktop/Updater doesn't see iPod

My iPod Shuffle shows up on the desktop. The amber recharge light is blinking. When iTunes opens, I get the following message: "iTunes has detected a software update for the iPod. Would you like to install it now?" When I click "Okay", the updater opens and I get the following message: "An unexpected error occurred". When I click "okay", the updater now tells me to plug in an iPod to update it. My iPod is plugged in and charging, and is on the desktop. When I quit the updater, my iPod does not appear in the iTunes source list.
I then quit and reopened iTunes. This time when prompted regarding the software update, I click cancel. iTunes now opens with my iPod listed in the Source list. However, when I go to add songs to the iPod I get the following message: "Some of the songs in the iTunes music library were not copied to the iPod because your iPod software is too old. Go to www.apple.com/ipod to get the latest iPod software update."
I've reinstalled the updater 3 times now. I got the same results as described above each time. The updater doesn't see the iPod. What is the "unexpected error"? Why doesn't the Updater see the iPod?
    Thanks for any help.

I just downloaded the latest updater version, plugged in my iPod Shuffle, and sat in wide eyed amazement as it actually recognized that the iPod was, in fact, plugged into the computer!!!
I held my breath while the updater did it's thing... could this actually be it? Could I finally join the army of gleeful millions, listening to my favorite tunes and newscasts while jogging? Would the wonderful little gift I got for Christmas finally - gulp! - work?
Alas, no. Just as the updater was finishing up I got the following glass if ice water in my face:
"An error occurred updating or restoring iPod. Disconnect iPod, reconnect and then try restoring again. If that does not work, go to http://www.apple.com/support/ipod"
I did that, and noticed that "restoring" was not an option, as the "restore" button wasn't active. Ah well... my iPod shuffle goes back into it's neat little packaging, and back onto the shelf while I await the next round of potential solutions to slowly work their way down to the Discussions Sub-basement.
I swear to God, I will not give up on this. I know it can work. Someday, someday...

Also also - I ordered, received, and installed an Iogear 4 port USB 2.0 pci card, hoping against hope that that would solve the issue. It didn't. I've been working on this since the day after Christmas. The problem seems so uniquely simple, and yet I've never been more frustrated with an Apple product.
Why won't the updater recognize my iPod and allow me to install the software? I personally believe that there is some communications glitch between iTunes 6.0.1, OS 10.3.9, and iPod updater. Any word on new versions coming out of the Apple bat cave?

  • ITunes 7 won't see iPod

I just installed iTunes 7 and it's the best upgrade to iTunes in, well, forever. But it won't see my 3rd gen iPod. I'm connected to my PC via firewire and haven't had any problems in the past with iTunes seeing my iPod. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting, I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes.
It sees my iPod as a hard drive in My Computer, so the computer sees it. Just not iTunes. What steps can I take to get iTunes to see it?
    Thanks for any help!

I'm having the same problem with I-pod recognition
with 2 30gb Videos. I have tried to update the ipod
and even reset it, but as soon as you tell it to
perform the function it drops the connection with the
ipod. From the looks of the forum this is not the
only problem with Version 7. If anyone has a solution
let me know. We use these for our radio station
events so we need to get back up and running. Thanks!
How do you manually update the iPod? How do you reset it (do you mean hitting play and pause at the same time for a few seconds?)? Apple has made it really convoluted to manually update your iPod software with iTunes 7. If I could, I'd just run the updater, erase the iPod, and start from scratch. But with iTunes 7, I can't find a way to run the updater.
It'd be awfully nice if the folks at Apple acknowledged these problems publically and at least gave us reassurance that this HORRIBLE problem will be fixed. They broke their flagship product. Their least obscenely overpriced product. Something that everyone and their mother has. It's silly.
btw, I connected my iPod via FW to my housemate's macbook pro and iTunes 7 recognized it instantly. Just figured I'd give a bit more info.

  • ITunes, Finder don't mount iPod

My iPod is not recognized by iTunes (v6.0.4) or the Finder (OSX 10.4.6). I have tried the 5Rs and nothing has helped. I have tried a Firewire cable and a USB cable. Have installed the iPod Updater.
Not able to install the iTunes updater (although I'm running the latest version already, anyway) - the options of what to install are greyed out, marked Skip, and won't let me check them.
iPod is working fine, except it seems to need to be reset fairly frequently. But I'm unable to synch it with the computer (obviously) as it doesn't recognize it. I tried to put it into Disk mode, but despite very carefully following directions, it never ended up in Disk mode. The Apple showed correctly after I reset it, and while it was showing I held down the Select and Play buttons, but eventually it just turned back on.
And to send it in for repairs I found out, costs $268!! I mean...really! Forgetaboutit.

Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

  • ITunes update bad for my ipod ?!?!

My ipod has been working great for the past 2 years, well, I power up with the wall plug and haven't updated any of my itunes or ipod software for probably 8 months. I updated my itunes to the recent version and then reset and updated my ipod. Now I can't put music on it with out getting an error about reading or writing files from the disk. Heres what I know:
-I can reset the ipod without any issues.
-I can add contacts to the ipod without any issues.
-when I try to add songs through itunes it's very slow and after 3 songs gives me an error and quites. I can add songs like this 3 at a time by un-mounting and mounting the ipod.
-I can't add songs to the ipod through winamp, realplayer, and windows media player won't even recognize that it's plugged in (even though it shows up in MyComputer)
-The songs that are added slowly are Mp3's imported from older versions of itunes, Wav files generally don't work, although I have some sound effects that are under 5 seconds long and they sync to the ipod fine.
then I installed ipod linux to see if a different format would help at all.
So I don't think it has anything to do with my ipod's capability to read and write to the disk, and its not that old. It's a 4th generation click wheel thats around 2 years old.
    any ideas?
do I really have to send this in?

  • My computer (s) don't see IPOD

We've had this ipod for two years. Two weeks ago it would no longer update with itunes, in fact, itunes, ipod updater, system tools, nothing would see it. Tried 4 different usb ports, two different cords, nuttin! The cords would still charge it and it would still play, but no updating. So we sent it to an ipod resQ place. They said nothing was wrong, it connected just find to their system (s). I asked them to get it updated with latest ipod software, and send it back to me. Got it back, yep, they were able to put stuff on it, but I STILL can't get my machines to see it. I have reinstalled itunes/and updater twice and still nothing. USB/Device manager shows no conflicts and my other usb peripherals work fine. What to do now?? Suggestions PLEASE!!
