ITunes updating track information?

Hey, I've had a problem for a while, not sure how long, but I have the most recent version of iTunes and it seems that every couple of months or so iTunes will automatically change track information on some of my songs. This is a real drag because for a lot of the albums it will remove the album covers and I'll have to embark upon a crusade on the internet to get them all back.
At first I thought the album art was the only thing it was touching but then I noticed it was also changing some of the album info....for example, on the American Beauty album I have by the Grateful Dead, it would keep the first half of the album as it was, American Beauty by Grateful Dead, but would change the second half to be American Beauty by The Grateful Dead. Also, for the Super Session album by Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield, and Stephen Stills, it changed the Album Artist for all the tracks from "Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield, and Stephen Stills" to "Kooper/Bloomfield/Stills." All of my music is legal, and from CD's, I don't have anything from the iTunes store. Is there a way to disable this auto-update feature, I've looked through the preferences and couldn't find anything. Thanks for any help.

Yeah, it also inserted the album title "The Mama's and the Papa's" for the only Mama's and the Papa's song I have, California Dreaming, even though I just had the album field blank.

  • ITunes 12 Track information

    Hi There
Being old fashioned I still purchase CDs - retro huh!!!
But after latest update of iTunes 12 my iMac won't find the track information!!??
    Any help much appreciated.

For starters, you're not being old fashioned to purchase CDs. As long as downloads on CD-quality are hardly purchasable (and too expensive), buying CD's is still a good way to go.
To understand your question correctly: You enter a CD in the optical player and iTunes present a list of tracks. But this list does not provide track information, so you'll get track01, track02, track03 etc? Have you logged in to the store? Have you tried the option menu?

  • Updating Track Information from the Music Store

Is it possible to update my tracks with information from the Music Store - automatically? I don't feel like going over every piece of music I have doing it manually. Like there's an option to download missing artwork it would be awesome with an option to download (or override ) genres?

No, you can't get any info from the iTunes store (apart from the album art).
There are several 3rd party applications though, that could help you tag your music. I never used one myself, so Google might better be able to help you find one.

  • HT204406 Trying to copy a cd I own and this same cd is in the itunes store. Itunes will not autofill the track information

The album is Voxis - Darkeworld. I'm trying to copy this album into Itunes and Itunes will NOT auto fill any of the Information. I did check in the itunes store and the album is there. The digital copy is missing tracks 22-95.

iTunes gets track information for imported CDs from Gracenote, not the iTunes Store. Go to the General preferences in iTunes and make sure that the option to automatically retrieve track names is checked. If it is, it's possible that Gracenote doesn't have that CD in their database, or can't correctly identify and match up the CD. Your system or network may also be blocking access to Gracenote in the firewall.
    Regards.

  • Unable to update iTunes track information

So I recently got an iPod, and I decided to take my existing MP3's I have ripped over the years from my CD's and import them into iTunes and get my iPod loaded up.
Upon doing this, everything worked fine... I dragged and dropped my MP3's straight onto iTunes and let it sit for a few hours.
Now I'm trying to go in and fill in some missing/incorrect information on my files (add track info, number of discs in album, etc.) and I find that I am not able to on my older MP3's.
The MP3's say according to iTunes that they are version 2.3 of the ID3 tag. When I try to change one or multiple track information, it just simply doesn't change after I click OK.
I also noticed that I can't convert my ID3 tags when I choose the option. I get the message "Could not convert ID3 tags for all of the selected songs. The song may be write-protected or of the wrong type."
From what I can surmise, all of the MP3's I ripped a long, long time ago with MusicMatch are giving me the problem. I haven't used that program in ages. I was able to change song info with a rip of a CD which I believe was done by Windows Media Player.
How can I get these MP3's to work so I can change the song information in iTunes without going back through all my CD's and rerip them directly into iTunes? That would be a huge pain.
    Thanks.

You'll want to right click on your "iTunes Music" folder (My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library\iTunes Music) and choose Properties. Once XP/Vista shows the property window, at the bottom of that window in the Attributes section. You want to clear out any checkmark or grayness in that and it will go through your music files and clear your read only attribute.
If that doesn't work, you'll want to look at the Security tab in that same box and make sure that the user you are logged in as has "modify" rights to the music files.

  • Please suggest software that allows burning of music CD's to include track information.  Itunes no longer does this.

I love my iPod and felt the same about iTunes.  But iTunes removed the track information function when burning cd's, even if you check include text, so it is useless toi me forthat purpose.

This just started for me too. Isn't there a fix from apple on this? This is in apple's software, not the computer. I can import cd's through the burner but it says disc burner or software not found when trying to burn one.I tried several things but one of the solutions listed is to uncheck the cd text button but my cd text button cannot be changed(faded but not gone)I've tried to repair it,uninstall and reinstall, update drivers, new gear driver software, slowing burning speeds to 8x or less but this seems to be a software issue. Help!!!

  • How to show individual track information (like in the old iTunes) of a single artist (or that artist's album) without all the noise of every single other artist close in the alphabet?

The new iTunes has truly added extra visual noise.
I am trying to view a single Artist and the individual track information of that artist.  This used to be how itunes was, you could click on a single artist and then the tracks would all have their various categories.
I can still see this but only in the "songs" category and in that I have to see every single song or artist alphabetically.
How do I simply see the artist, and that artist's tracks, as well as the different info about that track I want to see, such as "name, track #, time, year, genre, bit rate, kind, etc."
Please don't counsel me on what information I need to see, or suggest that I stop caring about this, or ask me why I want to see this various info.
It was simple and accessible in the older version and I would probably stop complaining to all of my friends about the latest version of itunes if I can see this old format.
Or... is there a way to re-download the old version?  It's okay that you've made mistakes, every company makes mistakes, if I can revert to the old version that would be great.
    Thank you.

Select the Songs tab, then under iTunes Menu select View then click Show Column Browser. You will see the familiar GENRES ARTISTS ALBUMS header, click on one artist and you will have only the artist's albums and songs showing in the window below with all the specific info you selected under View options. If this is not what you wanted, simply reply with a nice "no thanks".
Search this forum for instructions to reinstall iTunes 10.7, there are quite a few posts explaining the process.

  • I want iTunes to STOP updating my information, is this possible?  how?

I want iTunes to STOP updating my information.  Each time I open my 21,000 song library in which I have carefully customized 'genre' and 'album' and 'album sort' iTunes CHANGES MY SETTINGS.  I want to stop this unasked for and unwanted corruption of my entries, please.  (e.g. album sort undoes alphabetical song order for an artist, which is unwanted and irritating .. I have ALL of my 'album sort' set as * .. this provides perfect alphabetization .. please stop changing 'genre' and 'album' and 'album sort'.

  • Itunes wont update track names even when purchased from itunes

my itunes wont update track names even when purchased from itunes

    Update them to what?
Are they not correct as purchased from iTunes?
I seriously doubt that the track names are incorrect in the iTunes store and when downloaded to your computer.

  • How do I get iTunes to read and import track information?

How do I get iTunes to read and import track information from compilation CDs? Typically, the compilations have been burned to disk using iTunes or Toast 8 Titanium. I have checked data boxes as available with both softwares. My REGA Planet CD player as well as my car CD player can read the track info but neither my nor my friends' iTunes can read the tracks for importing.

I don't believe that iTunes can read CDText.

  • How to move multiple tracks from one location to another on HD and keeping iTunes updated?

    Hi all
I'd like to move/re-arrange some subdirectories of my iTunes' main folder and I'd like to keep iTunes library updated without broken links without needing to re-imports the moved albums/tracks. Is there any method to do this? Even with the help of some utility or app?
    thanks in advance!

iTunes works this way.  You add a file. It makes a note of its location and metadata stored in the file and adds this to its own library database.
Note: All my answers are with reference to iTunes 7.5  (yes, 7.5). I've stopped trying to keep up with Apple's newer stuff which is why I rarely come here anymore.
    Answers to your specific questions.
1&2)  I think I have in the past copied a file with the identical name over an existing file and iTunes was fooled into thinking it was the original file.  However, it didn't update the metadata in its own database until I highlighted the file briefly in a playlist.  This causes the original file to be re-read.  The same thing happens if I use a third party metadata editor to change the metadata in a file.  iTunes will continue to display the old data until I briefly select the file in a playlist or it starts to play the file.
You can, by the way, add two files with the identical name (but in two different folders obviously) and iTunes will add them both as individual entries, even if the metadata is identical.
    3)  I don't have iTunes Match obviously (I can't even see the Store anymore with iTunes 7).  My third hand understanding is it won't do anything to your original files.  If it finds a match it will automatically download the match to your iTunes folder as if you had all the preferences settings set to use it normally.  I'm guessing you will then have two files for that track and you'll need to work on cleaning up the lesser quality one unless you want to just leave it.  Again, can't speak from experience.
I have both preferences options de-selected and don't want to select them to test my reply. I don't want iTunes to do either because I have media organized by kind and source over two internal hard drives and 3 partitions.  I 100% manage my media manually and have always done it that way.  I think option 2 has iTunes restructure your folders according to album and artist.  I deselected both because i didn't want to constantly be fighting iTunes in its attempt to organize things how it wanted.
If you're going to manage your media manually then you need to understand how iTunes works in detail and be willing to stay on top of it.  iTunes is designed to do everything on its own so people don't have to worry about things.  By unclicking its default preferences or moving files yourself in Finder or using a script to do so you are also figuratively clicking a button that says, "Okay, I know what I am doing and iTunes works."  Normally rule #1 with iTunes is never, never move a file to a different location in Finder and you'll see a lot of posts here from people who have "lost" items becaause they moved a folder or renamed it.  Maybe iTunes behaves differently when you deselect those preferences because I do this all the time and iTunes can track it as long as I don't move it to a different volume/drive.  I am very careful not to lose things or make duplicates, and of course I back up my computer before any major editing.

  • Changing mp3 file locations - how do i update / save information in iTunes?

I am getting ready to put an additional hard drive into my computer - an old 60GB hard drive from another computer to act as the slave drive - in order put all of my music, movies, and pictures onto to save space on the main hard drive for my computer (only a 40GB). What do i have to do within iTunes to make sure it will still read the mp3 files when i move them to the new drive? Will iTunes save the changes and additions that i have made to the files?
I've been working on my music library for over a month and updated all of my mp3 files to include the artist and song title, so that info will transfer with the file; but I have been working within iTunes for the past 2 weeks getting everything just right - changing artist and title names, adding artwork for cover flow and updating album information to group songs and artists the way i want. What do i need to do to save all of this within iTunes, so that when i change file destinations of my mp3 files everything stays the same? Can i select all of my songs within iTunes and back them up directly to the new drive and then delete the older versions from the old hard drive?
Sorry if these sound stupid or are easy to fix, but i just don't want to lose all of my work that i put into my music library and have to start all over.
    Thanks for the help.

What do i have to do within iTunes to make sure it will still read the mp3 files when i move them to the new drive?
    Don't move them yourself.
Point iTunes prefs -> Advanced to the location where you want to music to go.
Then go to menu Advanced -> Consolidate library.
This will copy all the music in iTunes to the new location.
Then you can delete \My Documents\/My Music\iTunes\*iTunes music folder*.

  • Latest iTunes update restarts track when pressing pause in the last seconds of play

When I updated to the last version of iTunes (might have been earlier, haven't used it like that in some time) the program started doing a very annoying thing: if you pause a track in the last seconds (I think it's 3) it rewinds it to the very start. I'm constantly reviewing and rating songs I get sent so I'm used to pausing the songs in the last seconds. But now it won't resume where I left it but restart completely. Anybody else noticed that? Is it just me or all the latest iTunes updates have only brought annoying things like this on board? Any idea how to overcome that?

Have experienced the same problem with iTunes 11.1.3 on both Mac and Windows. Very annoying.

  • How to get Track information in Itunes 12 for windows 8.1

I just installed Itunes on my Asus. I am running Windows 8.1 . Some of my library which was already loaded in my Windows Media Player was brought into Itunes. It did not have track information because when I ripped it, I was working without an internet connection. The only reason I download Itunes was because the Windows Media Player doesn't use Gracenote. But when I went to get track info on the unidentified music, I went to the upper left hand corner, pulled down the menu, clicked on Get Info and having selected multiple tracks clicked "OK to edit multiple tracks" however nothing happened. These came from CD's I purchased. Don't tell me to re-load them. Again, I only came back to Itunes for track labels so if Apple is refusing to provide the information (because they think I will buy the music from their store), I would rather not use it. Please advise.

iTunes can only fetch the information from Gracenote if it ripped the tracks. The information about the details of the ripped CD isn't encoded with the tracks themselves. You may find MediaMonkey's auto tag from web feature useful if you have filled in the artist and album fields, otherwise see Picard Tagger. iTunes doesn't detect changes made externally however I have a script called UpdateTagInfo which can get it to read the details. Note iTunes works best with MP3 files that have a single ID3v2.3 tag so check the preferences of any software you use to manipulate tags.
