ITunes upgrade then cannot locate source file
It seems everytime I update my iTunes it loses the source location of my music.
I have an external drive that has over 16k music files. I don't understand why. At least I checked after the update before I started adding more tunes.
I recall this happening once before and when i clicked through to locate the source, I ended up with duplicates and a very full local HD.
I've treid searching countless threads for a solution, but it seems most issues are related to erroneous moving of files, or some other issue.
What should I be doing? Why does it always change my media file settings and advanced settings? What is the best way to correct this during upgrades. I'm so frustrated with music suddenly starting to be imported to my local HD and not my external drive.
Things I make sure of:
External drive is always connected and recognized before starting iTunes.
All music is in one location, Music Master folder on external Drive.
What is best practice/process to deal with continual issue?
The "missing file" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. I can provide a step by step guide if you give me the two paths.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

I have now transfered my files of ripped CD's to my iTunes library three times Since upgrading to iTunes 11 and Windows 8. On each occassion, the conversion seems to occur fine, the files play, but when I close my computer and return the next day, iTunes says it cannot locate any of those files. Three times. Beginning to lose my temper. Advice? Suggestions? Could the fact that my original library is located on a network drive have anything to do with it? Thanks for your help, all.
Repair security permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and system full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7/8 shouldn't be too different.
Repeat for the media folder if it isn't a subfolder of the iTunes folder.

How can I download a previously downloaded purchase to my iTunes library on my laptop when the listing for the song in my library won't play because it says it cannot locate the file. Yes I have searched my iTunes folders and also done a full windows search. The track plays on my iPad and my iPhones but will not play on my laptop!?
It has an "!" To the left of the song title in my library
My worry is that if I sync my iPad/iPhone then I will lose the track on those also!If you cannot find the file on your hard drive then once you delete the current broken entry you should be able to redownload from iTunes in the Cloud. This assumes the item in question qualifies. Note that audiobooks, digital booklets, iTunes LPs & Extras, ringtones, selected movies etc. don't.
If prompted don't hide the item. You may find that you need to close and then reopen iTunes before it will appear for download.

When I transitioned from a PC to a Mac, I transferred all of my music into iTunes, however when I go to play songs, iTunes tells me it cannot locate the file. What do I do?
iTunes cannot find your music files. Find them on your computer and make sure they're in ~/Music/iTunes. If they are not, then drag all the files into the iTunes app.

As I downloaded new software upgrade in my iPod nano 7 th gen and also new iTunes upgrade then all data on my iPod got erased and now when I am trying to sync it again then sync button is disabled on the windows screen . Kindly help
From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod. -
I just downloaded some new drum sounds on Logic Pro X that were offered upgrades and now I get an error message in my regular work that states,
"Cannot open source file" when I go to import an mp3 large file into any template or new project.
I've trashed preferences and have plenty of room to import the large files I usually work with.
Need guidance please. Thanks Pancenter, that helped. I still hear a slight difference in the tone of voice speaking in a 48k session also.
Do you think this is the difference of being recorded at 44.1 mp3, then change to m4a and export the now 48k file into a 48k Logic session? I didn't see a way of changing Quicktime Player sample rate to 44.1, which is preferred in this instance. Future recordings I can set up at 48k but I have a bunch of files at 44.1 waiting for me that need a solution first.
Whew, and yes what a pain to do this when it worked fine before. (although for my work, I would prefer to edit as mp3 instead of turning into AIF then mp3 again- too much giggage wasted for this use)
Still open to other solutions without undoing the new sounds & such I just upgraded. -
Cannot open because cannot locate original file
I made a dumb mistake when I first started using LR and I thought files once downloaded into the catalogue were saved and accessible. I removed the files from bridge and now I cannot open them in my catalogue. My photos will show up in LR, but the message says "cannot open because cannot locate original file"
I can SEE them, I just can't do anything with them. Is there anyway to recover these files? What you are seeing in LR is simply a thumbnail of what was in your LR catalogue. I guess though there is no harm in trying to export what you see in LIghtroom, as a jpg but I can't thjink that would work.
So you imported all into Lightroom and then went into Bridge and deleted them from Bridge and therefore off your drive as well. And no backup? Just trying to understand where things went sideways. -
I have just got iTunes match. It appears that since joining and starting it some tunes have been deleted from my library. They are shown in the listing but iTunes can no longer locate the files. Any suggestions?
If they are showing in the Videos app with a cloud then go into Settings > iTunes & App Store on your phone and set Videos (under the 'Show All') heading 'off' - you might (depending upon which country that you arein) have a similar button for music and the Music app.

Purchased Direct Access from iTunes. I cannot locate the download and I cannot download it a second time. Any ideas as to where the original download might reside?
Hi rogerfrommilwaukee,
Welcome to the Apple Support Community!
Previous purchases can be located in the Purchased section of either your iOS device or in iTunes on a computer. The purchases will be available to re-download as long as they are still available in the App Store and you are using the same Apple ID. Please use the attached article as a reference.
Download past purchases

itunes unable to read/locate music files as they have been converted to HP Connected Music files - can anyone assist ?
You need to associate your music files to iTunes instead of HP.
Control Panel
Programs
Default Programs
Set Associations
Double click on the relevant item and select iTunes from the list. -
I have an iPod 5th gen. My audiobook playlists disappeared. They show as "on this device" in iTunes, but I cannot locate them on the device. Even the audiobook tab has disappeared. This happed after the most recent iTunes update.
- Delete all AB and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage>Audio Book (if present) and delete
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Stacking Shapes Causes Text to Disappear
I have 2 rectangle shapes that are .25 in height. Each has text that is a single word in a 9 pt font. When I stack the shapes the text in the top shape does not display. I have tried changing the inset margin but that did nothing. Is this a bug?
