ITunes uses 46G of space when I only have 9G worth of music?

My iTunes folder properties in my program files menu shows iTunes utilizing 46G - but I only have about 9G worth of songs and videos on my iTunes. Is this normal? My poor pc only has 80G (which puts it on par with my new iPod, I know, need a new pc, lol), so the iTunes program appears to be taking up more than half of my available space...

Check your iTunes folder again. Is everything there also in iTunes library? You might have files in the folders not added to iTunes.

  • Why does my camera roll use 10GB of my space, when I only have 508 photo's and video's on my camera roll?

I have some problems with the space on my Iphone 4s. I always get a message that says that I can't rec or can't take another picture because I don't have enough space on my phone. When I go to settings and check, my photo's and video's use almost 10GB (9,8GB). I have 407 pictures and 101 video's (not very long videos, more like short but many). In total i have 508 photo's and video's in my camera roll. My friends have like over a thousand pictures and video's, but they haven't used like 10GB of their space. So why does my 508 picutures and videos use som much more space??

Videos add up fast.  A 30 second video on a 4S could easily be 85 MB.  101 of these would be almost 8.6 GB.  Add 407 photos at 3 MB each and you reach 9.8 GB.
I would suggest you import some of these to your computer (especially some of the vidoes) and delete them from your phone, as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.

  • Time Machine says it need 21 TB space when I only have a 500 GB drive in the computer.

Hi,  I have a MacBook and was trying to run a Time Machine backup when I got an error saying: "The backup is too large for the backup disk.  The backup requires 21.09 TB but only 369.26 GB are available."
I have a 500 GB drive in the MacBook and it only has about 150 GB taken up.  I also have a 500 GB drive for the Time Machine and it is not even half way full.  Any ideas as to how I can make it work?
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.7 and I have the lat 2009 white MacBook.  Wasn't having any issues with the Time Machine until just now.
    Thanks.

It seems you're not alone with this problem.  This is the suggested fix, but I've never tried it myself:

  • ITunes says I have 22.217 gb when I only have 1,252 songs why?

So iTunes says that I have 22.217 gb when I only have 1,252 songs. Why? I just got a nano after having problems with two last year and when I try to sync my music it says that I have too many songs and not enough space for my 1,252 songs. It's a 16gb nano and I should be using only 4.5 or 5 gb. Why is it saying that I have more music than I really do? I'm taking it back if Apple can't help.

Your problem is you are ripping your CDs in AIFF, as large as you can get. They will sound great but you will get far less of them on your Nano. Apple computes their estimate of the number of songs you will get on a device based on a 128 AAC song of 4 minutes length, which will be about 4.5Mb in size. With your AIFF songs that are 10 times that size you will only get about 1/10th as many songs.

  • Hi, When I try to sync my iphone not all the music in my itunes library syncs successfuly even though I have a lot of space left and I have the 'sync all music' option selected. Any idea? Thanks

Hi, When I try to sync my iphone not all the music in my itunes library syncs successfuly even though I have a lot of space left and I have the 'sync all music' option selected. Any idea? Thanks

While you're correct in that Windows media won't sync to the iPhone (or any i-device), the OP states that all the music is in iTunes.  If its in iTunes, it would no longer be in Windows media format since it would have been transcoded to whatever the user sets as their import preference (AAC, mp3, etc.), and once that is done then the media should be able to sync to the iPhone just fine.
To Steph, do the missing songs play OK in iTunes? If not then they could be corrupted in some way.  If they play fine in iTunes but don't sync, are they unchecked in iTunes? They won't sync to your iPhone if it is set to ignore unchecked items.  Finally, if these are iTunes purchases, are they protected format? (i.e. m4p files)  If so, is your computer authorized to play them? (you'd know if you try to play them in iTunes, it would prompt you for the account password if not authorized)

  • HT4914 Can I use iTunes Match without a computer? I only have an iphone at the moment with stored music. Computer was stolen.

Can I use iTunes Match without a computer? I only have an iphone at the moment with stored music. My computer was stolen.

iTunes match will only work from a computer in terms of uploading new content. You should be able to copy iTunes purchases back via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). For content from other sources there are some third-party programs listed half-way down this page which might help you get your content back from your phone : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • My IPhone 5c duplicates my music and says I have 8gb of pictures when I only have 200 of them, what's happening?

All of my albums are super long because there are duplicates of each song. Plus in my memory it says that I have 5 gb left and that i have 8gb of pictures when I only have 200. I already did a soft and hard reset and it keeps on happening. Help!

Set it up as new device and restore from the backup again, explained here:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
Are you using the HD feature if you are taking photos? If yes, HD photos are using more space on your phone, try to use the default settings for the photo quality.

I have years worth of music on my PC that is about to die.  If I get an iPad is there anyway to get the music from my PC onto the iPad? I have the iCloud but my understanding is only music actually purchased from iTunes lives int he cloud. I have music that was legally purchased and loaded to my iTunes account from cd's that I no longer own.  I need a new laptop and am deciding between the iPad and the Mac book.  I use the computer for music, photos, and web - nothing else and nothing fancy.  I don't know that there is a way to save my huge music library without saving it to an external hard drive and then loading it to a new one (does the iPad have a port to plug an external hard drive into?)

First, you would need to make a backup of the entire iTunes folder on the PC. You could get music to the iPad if the PC was still functioning, or you would have to move the music to another computer. An iPad is not a laptop, and does not have a port to plug an external drive into. You can sync music to the iPad from the computer, but you are correct, unless you get iTunes Match, you would need a computer to copy the music to and then sync to an iPad.

  • HT4847 I am only backing up camera roll and a my media app which are 890 MB and 414 MB, i backup everynight why is it full it says my backup size is 4.7 GB when I only have those 2 things?

I am only backing up camera roll and a my media app which are 890 MB and 414 MB, i backup everynight why is it full it says my backup size is 4.7 GB when I only have those 2 things?

The back up is supposed to be a rolling back up and therefore may still contain data from previous back ups. To free up space you may wish to delete the back up and start again.

  • Can't install OSX Mountain Lion, on the disk selection screen i cant select the Macintosh HD to install OSX giving a message (This disk cannot be used to start up your computer).only have one disk to select and my partition map scheme is GUID partition

just bough OSX Mountain Lion, my laptop operating with v10.6.8.  Can't install OSX Mountain Lion, on the disk selection screen i cant select the Macintosh HD to install OSX giving a message (This disk cannot be used to start up your computer).only have one disk to select and my partition map scheme is GUID partition table. 24.44gb disk available.

Verify your computer can run Mountain Lion:
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Open Disk Utility and verify the drive is partitioned using GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If it is then do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Now try installing Mountain Lion.
