ITunes uses so much internet to backup?

Why does iTunes use so much internet? Less than a minute, it used 100MB just by backing up. I only downloaded 2 apps which were both under 20MB each. It's so annoying, here in NZ - we have limits for our internet. :L

I have the same problem.
I think it dipends from the library that is too much wide.
I have a 150GB library and the pc sometimes freezes, expecially closing the program.
If you want to be sure that is the same problem, rescan the mp3 directory but add only 5 or 6 GB of music.
Could someone help us?

  • Will Home Sharing in iTunes use up my internet bandwidth?

I know this question is often addressed - but I haven't been able to find an answer that necessarily fits my situation:
Airport Express is connected directly to the internet & acts as WiFi transmitter for my two machines. I want to share music using iTunes between these machines (i.e. play music on my laptop while in bed).
Will streaming this music (music stored on the iMac) on my laptop use up internet bandwidth?
I did the "unplug test" and the machines still recognize eachother when the ethernet cable is disconnected.
My fear is that it still somehow will go through the internet if it can.
Not that it matters - but we are using borrowed bandwidth & have been asked specifically to not stream.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Essentially my question comes down to local network versus internet...Does homesharing via iTunes use the shared Internet at all or is it simply a wireless independent network that exists because of the AirPort Express?
If it is in fact independent, it shouldn't affect anyone's internet connection (except maybe other people using the AirPort Express??? but even this seems unlikely) - except mine.
It seems unlikely that my data from one computer would be projected into a cloud-type internet server and then back to another computer when the signal could simply be transmitted via the AirPort device.
This seems to me the obvious transmission path...but I wanted to be certain.
You seem to agree with me but the more we talk about it the more confused I'm getting.

  • HT201617 does downloading from itunes use my home internet data??

does downloading from itunes use my home internet data??
in other words, does it contribute to my download limit?

All transactions through the home internet (be it your wi-fi base, or wired Ethernet) would be
the same total on the monthly limits for that service. However the costs for downloads via
your home network and ISP, may be less than using a cellular network and data rate/limits.
Depending on what the product is, in use for these iTunes downloads. An iPad, iPod, or
iPhone that can be set to use wi-fi from non-cellular sources, gives you an option, so it
could be used to go online with those, anywhere; including free sources instead of one
    of the cellular plan giants.
So I am not sure what other parameters your question is meant to address.
Could you clarify the situation a little better, to specify if only an ISP is the
main or only source of internet, or if there's some other device involved..?
I know that if I stream or run a live music feed from the iTunes player and just listen to any
free channels for hours on end, it would certainly run my internet into overage - and it may
prompt the service provider to limit my bandwidth as part of a penalty in addition to adding
extra charges per GB over a set limit, that I'm over. There is that ceiling...
However, if you have a supposedly "unlimited" account, there may also be ways a provider
could go further to make it harder for you to keep using it as 'unlimited' since their side may
see those as potential money-losers. To have streaming video over internet would really be
a quick way to use any limits and likely garner significant penalties.
The wording in your home or cellular services is probably subject to change so be sure
to read your agreements and see how anything new may affect you or what you pay...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Itunes Using too much power

So recently when i have itunes open, even when reduced to the background it will every so often spike my cpu to 100% and make it impossible to do anything else for a few second before settling back to normal. What would cause itunes to use so much power

Seems like there is a thread already sorry.....

  • ITunes using too much RAM.

I noticed that when I have about 5 apps open—not including iTunes—my total free (including inactive) memory is 2.0GB. When I open iTunes, it instantly uses about 100 MB but when you leave it open I notice that my RAM is at 1.2GB, even though I have nothing else opened than previously. When I quit it, I get all the RAM back. A huge memory leak, perhaps? Having 800MB of RAM taken away by a single app is completely unacceptable. Is anyone else having this problem?

Well recalling an old post, is just stating the fact that the program is still doing the same thing. And i do concurr that itunes is one of my bigger ram hogs but i have no problem with 16gigs of ram installed. As coder myself, i know it is possible for them to rework itunes to dump cache periodically so that it doesnt hog as much ram as it does.
Itunes is falling behind times as Solid State Drives are becoming more prevelant in computers, they shouldn't need to cache as much as it does currently and hogging system resources. But then again on the other hand, they are  probably thinking that it is not a problem anymore since the standard for most computers/laptop is upwards of 4gigs+. Still is poor coding on apple's behalf that wont be recognized this late in the game.
    In reply to Zak,
As of right now apple is on downward slope according to stock market quotes. But they have a few products that are coming out here soon that will bounce them back easily. After that, I am not sure.
    In reply to Richb1910,
Comparing Apple to Mircosoft now a days is like comparing apple to oranges. Their companies have taken different paths, yes one may be better then the other in their choice of paths. But as it stands microsoft is still the leading home user operating system and server operating system for many major companies. Apple excels with their product lines which make them a very successful company. To say on or the other is barely staying above water is by far the wildest thing i have ever heard.

  • ITunes uses too much space

I have a Dell PC, and I use iTunes to manage my iPod. I was just looking for a few files I can delete (my hard disk is becoming too small) and I noticed that I have 3 separate iTunes subfolders in the Program Files folder: iTunes - 52MB, 2925 files 12/18/2011; iTunes(2) - 80MB, 1828 files, 2/19/2010; and iTunes(3) - 90MB, 1813 files, 6/17/2010; and another folder, not a subfolder of Program files, named Itunes Music - 603 MB, 188 files, 6/24/2006. Does anyone have any idea why there are so many? Can I get rid of any of them? What about getting rid of all of them, then reinstall? It's a relatively old (Gen. 2?) ipod.
BTW, I don't have any paid music (it's either free or loaded from my own CDs) but mostly I've got free podcasts, so it could be recreated although it'd be a PITA.

Some of those are backups iTunes makes.  I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to mess around with any of these files. A better option would be to invest in an external hard drive and copy your iTunes library over to that, which in turn will free up space on your PC's main drive.  You can buy pretty bulky storage drives for quite cheap these days.

  • Why is my iPhone 5 using so much internet?

So I've got a new iPhone 5, got it just over a week ago and don't get me wrong, I am stoked with it. BUT a small problem has started to occur.
My sister came to me a few days ago saying that for some reason her internet data was being used that comes with her prepaid recharge, I ignored it, thinking she was just going to lots of different sites but ofcourse it's always different when it happens to us.
The first time I recharged, I had no problem with my internet, but this morning, I got a message saying I was under 50MB and it'd start using my credit, and then 20 minutes later, bam, no credit when I had only been on the phone to my brother who called me. so I recharged when I got to work which gives me 500MB and $450 credit, after 8 hours at work, of only checking my facebook a few times which is free, it says I'm under 50MB again. What? And then when I haven't touched it since receiving that text, 10 minutes later, I'm under 10MB and they're going to start charging me directly from my credit.
What is happening and how one arth do I stop it?

Well, you're using iOS7 which can use a lot more data.  iOS 7 now lets apps continue processing in the background (more then before), so that can be one issue.
Look over the following article for info on why you cell phone may be using up a lot of cell usage.  It has to do with changes in how iOS 7 works.

  • My Apple TV2 uses so much broadband data on my internet.

I just got a notification from my internet provider that I am now almost 30 gbs over my monthly limit, and this only happened in two days. I am assuming it is because I am using my apple tv non stop the last two days while i have been off work. If I am not downloading anything from the internet and merely streaming on my home network, why is the Apple TV using so much internet usage? Is there any way to turn this off?

Are you sure you are streaming from the LAN not the internet headings (Movies/TV Shows/Music)?  That would mean accessing your library from the Computers column.

I tried the ipod backuo funnction, but this only produced a small file, much smaller than 64gb. If I upgrade, will i lose all the music and books as currently constituted on the ipod touch?

The iPod backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.. See the following for what it contains.

  • ITunes cannot connect to Internet and iPad backup takes Forever

Hi, I have a workstation, high end Windows 7, PC, everything works perfect except the iTunes.. here's my story:
iTunes cannot connect to internet, nor can iTunes Store. I tried "Run Diagnostics" from Help menu, it showed "internet connection verified" green light BUT "Secure link to iTunes Store Failed" Red Light.
Then I thought, lets check other Apple App, Safari.. which couldn't load google for a long time and didn't even show any error, anyway, so I quit and uninstalled it.
I connected iPad for backup, it started all fine. At "Step 2 of 7" backing up, the loading/copying bar came half way up and stayed there for more than 20 hours. So, I quit that too. (Maybe, this is a different problem or connected, im not sure.)
I also checked the setting in Norton Firewall and made sure iTunes was allowed full access. Internet is working perfect in all the other applications, even "Apple Software Update" is working fine, checking for updates and everything. I have latest version of iTunes by the way.
THEN, I uninstalled everything Apple, left no trace of Apple in Program Files, and reinstalled iTunes. STILL SAME PROBLEM!!! Can anybody help? What could've happened, 'coz it used to work just fine before.
    Thanks Guys!

    start itunes.
    update podcasts - no response.
click on store - no response.
use diagnostics for connectivity - no response.
sometimes, when i stop itunes from trying to connect, i will get an error code 11222

How do I transfer itunes music to my iphone 4 without using the restore from this backup function?  I cannot use the back up function as have been advised that therer are bugs in it and restoring it back to my phone will bring the bugs with it and phone will be back to apple again as will start playing up again.  But I need the music.  Whn I plug it in laptop and go to itunes icon it gives me 2 options:  Set up as new iphone? OR Restore from backup.
Do I pick set up as new phone?  I dont know as the guy at the genius bar told me there would be an option asking if i want to sync itunes only...but there isn't.

Long story short....I restored my computer to an earlier point using time machine and now all of the previous back-ups are gone. My question has to do with itunes...is it possible to restore my itunes library to the most recent backup because the restore that I did was in march and the latest backup was in may....the reason being is that there were app that i had downloaded that are in my most recent back-up, that were not in the backup I restored to. Is it possible to just restore one application ie)itunes?

  • HT1766 If I fully backup my iPad using iTunes, does it backup ebooks in iBooks that are not purchased via iTunes or will restoring from that backup only showed purchased ebooks in iBooks?

If I fully backup my iPad using iTunes, does it backup ebooks in iBooks that are not purchased via iTunes or will restoring from that backup only showed purchased ebooks in iBooks?

Purchased content MAY be available for redownload - Music for sure.  I think books are NOT available for redownload (not sure).
Best practice is to keep the content on a desktop computer to be able to resync when necessary (or use a cloud service like Drop Box).

  • Help Needed: Backup iTunes Using Virtual DVD Media (Image)

    Hi,
My iTunes library is stored on external drive and managed by my G4 Mac mini.
I'd like to backup my library using the internal backup functionality in iTunes so I can do incremental backup. The problem is that I only have CD-R drive inside the Mac mini and not DVD-R so it will take me dozens of CDs to backup the whole library. I do have a DVD-R drive on another PC so I wondered if there is a way to use a virtual DVD-R media (like DVD image file) to perform the iTunes backup and then copy that virtual media to the other PC and burn it. I already tried it using Disk Utility and Toast but iTunes didn't recognize the DVD image that were created using these applications.
Does anyone know if there is a solution for my problem besides installing a DVD-R drive on my Mac mini (which of course is a bad investment on such an old machine).
    Thanks,
    Tal

    Hi Tyler,
You'll really need to use rsync for this I reckon, rsync should already be part of the Mac OS.
I found this post on LifeHacker which is an extract from this MacRumours forum post, which works perfectly for me to keep an exact copy of my iTunes Music folder on my network drive, which is now accessible for any computer on my network.
