ITunes version 8 .0.2.20 locking up

I am having problems with iTunes locking up. It has locked up when syncing to my iPod. It has locked up when I am done listening to a playlist and when I select another play list it locks up. I have had it lock up when I am in the iTunes Store. In each case I can not close the program without using the Task Manager in windows Vista. I do have a 64 bit machine and I am using the 64 bit iTunes for 64 bit machines. I am so frustrated I do not know what to do! I have uninstalled then reinstalled the software many times and it still is locking up.This problem was happening when I installed version 8 and then it still did it with version 8.0.2.20. Any help with this problem?

I uninstalled iTunes again and now both visualizers will not work. I don't know what to do since now both will nto work. can someone please help me get them up and running again?

  • The iTunes Library.itl file is locked

I have read many, many postings on this issue, but can't seem to find a resolution that works for me.
The problem occurs whenever iTunes is forced to close unexpectedly. Upon attempting to reopen iTunes, I get the following error message:
"The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
However, when I browse to the library.itl file and select "get info", it does NOT show as locked. In fact, if I attempt to check the "lock" selection, it immediately unchecks itself. Also on the "get info" page, the Sharing & Permissions area says "You can read and write".
I do not know of any other way to change permissions in OSX. I do not know how to use the terminal and view the chmod permissions on a networked drive.
However, since I do store my music library on a NAS device, I have browsed to the library.itl file via PC and viewed the properties. Again, it is not checked as "read only", and the permissions clearly allow read and write by everyone. I have even changed the permissions to "full control" for everyone. But that doesn't resolve the problem. As far as I can tell, there is not a permissions problem at all.
I have tried to copy the library.itl file to my mac desktop, in order to rename the original file and replace it with the copy, to try and reset the permissions that way. But OSX tells me "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “iTunes Library.itl”. So I cannot move the file. Interestingly, I CAN rename the file in the iTunes folder. But this does not help me. I find it funny that I can rename it, but I can't move it...
I am running OSX 10.6.5 with all the latest updates, and the latest version of iTunes as well. 10.1 I think? But I can't check because I can't get iTunes to open right now.
I have had this problem many times in the past. And I have gone as far as creating a whole new library, which takes FOREVER as I have nearly 120GB of music. And I lose all sorts of info... playlists, album art, etc. This is a real pain which I hope to avoid.
What gives me hope is that the last time this happened iTunes just spontaneously started working again. As if there were some sort of "timeout" issue. I have restarted multiple times of course, but still have not got a resolution this time. It would be nice if there were a simple "iTunes Library.itl.LOCK" file that I could delete.
Apple, would you please institute a crash recovery protocol for this issue? In all my reading and research, it seems like people are just sort of guessing at what is causing this problem, and coming up with a variety of different fixes that they think might work, or that occasionally work in given situations. But there seems to be no official word from anyone at Apple as far as a direct response to these library file locks caused by crashes.
Additionally, I feel that this may fall along the same lines as the lack of Time Machine support for networked drives. There is something sub optimal about Apple's networking. I don't know what it is. But there seems to be very little support for Apple users who use networked storage. Just to put my iTunes library on a NAS took a whole lot of reading and understanding to get done right, with no official help from Apple to be found anywhere. Not all mac users are dummies who need the simplest and most limited configuration options in order to avoid "problems". Networked storage is the future of home media and data backup. Please pay more attention to those of us who are trying to pave the way here.
Thanks for any help I might find here.

    CB many thanks!
woke up today with the exact same problem... iMac locked up while playing a video podcast off my NAS
(it was happily playing the audio even though the mouse was frozen)
couldnt get permission control of my Library.itl so found your post,
turned off the iTunes Server in my Synology (dont use it like that anyway) and rebooted the NAS.
iTunes immediatley launched WITHOUT the lock, performed its repair check and up it came!
    THANK-YOU
...oddly I notice that I dont have permissions to ANY of my directorys/files,
guess 'cause they are set in the Synology Shared Folder permissions?
All are listed in the finder as:
    (unknown) R&W
    everyone NO ACCESS

I had exactly the same problem, but appear to have solved it
Not sure what make/model NAS you have, but if it has an iTunes Server type service on it, turn it off. This won't delete your music folder, don't worry, but it will stop your NAS thinking it deserves exclusive access to the library files. Then reboot your NAS and voila, you can do what you like with the files.
You can turn the iTunes service back on whenever you've finished doing what you need to do.
    Hope that helps.

For a few days now, when I try to open up iTunes I have been getting an error message
"The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file"
can anyone tell me what this means and if there is a way to fix it? I have already uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes a few times on my system. (version 7)

first check to see if the .itl iTunes library file (or one of the folders above it in the folder heirarchy) have been set to "read only".

  • ITunes (10.5.2.11) locks up when trying to download from iTunes U site Madingley Lectures.

iTunes (10.5.2.11) locks up when trying to download from iTunes U site Madingley Lectures. The problem is repeatable on two different PCs running the same version of iTunes. I never previously had problems downloading presentations from this site. Any ideas?
Both PCs are running Windows 7 fully up to date with patches.

    Duncan,
I successfully downloaded the latest edition by going to the Store area. It took around 10 minutes. iTunes behaved fine and indicated the progress of the download.
However when I try to download another lecture via the iTunes U option within iTunes, the software freezes.
There is no progress bar and I can't change focus within iTunes. The only option I have is to kill the process from the Task Manager.
The lockup occurs almost immediately after I click on the Get button.
In previous months the downloads worked fine.
    Thanks for your assistance

You're going to have to restore your iPad on your computer via iTunes.  Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer (11.1) click help and check for downloads.  Then connect your iPad to your computer via USB and follow the directions in the link I have provided:

    Hi Dennis!
I have a couple of steps for you to try in order to get those songs transferred to your iPod touch. First, make sure all of your software is updated with the latest versions. If the songs were downloaded from iTunes, you will also want to delete the songs from your library and then download them again from the list of past purchases on your iTunes account. An article about doing that can be found here:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If you try a sync after those two steps and are still seeing the issue, then I would like you to try syncing the iPod by setting it to manually manage. An article outlining more information on manually managing your iPod sync can be found here:
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1535
If you are still having issues after that, I have another article that can outline some other reasons why your songs may not transfer to your iPod, and it can be found here:

You need iTunes 10.0 or greater to update your phone...iTunes isn't confused at all. If you're on a Mac, you'll need OS X 10.5.8 or greater to update iTunes to 10.0 or greater.

  • I tried downloading a CD (lots of my itunes music is from CDs) and it went as normal but when i downloaded it to my ipod it doesnt say the name of the artist. I've tried everything. It only did this after i downloaded the most recent itunes version

So a lot of my music in iTunes is CDs and recently I was trying to download another CD to it and everything went as normal until I downloaded it to my iPod. So I know that to get everything to match you have to change the names and stuff to get the album to match the iTunes version exactly so that everything will go smoothly and I did that but when I downloaded it to my iPod I saw that it didn't name the artist. Where it should say the artist it says "Unknown Artist". I thought that it was just that particular album but than I tried downloading another album and the same thing happened. I've tried everything. I've double checked to make sure the album matches the iTunes version and it still does it. Everything is fine on the iTunes on the computer. It says the artist and stuff but than on my iPod it doesn't. The album artwork, name of the album, and name of the songs are all there but the name of the artist isn't. It never did this before and it started right after I downloaded the latest version of iTunes so since it happened twice I think it may be a glitch with either my iPod or with iTunes but I thought maybe somebody could help me? I guess it's not important but it really bothers me. Especially since it could be avoided.

Yes i've tried all of that. I've turned it all the way on and off and erased all of my music and put it back on and nothing works. And with the breaking up CDs and putting into compilation categories i have already fixed all of that stuff. It's fine it just doesn't show up in the list of artists. I can find the album in the songs category and the albums category it's just it doesn't show tha name of the artist. All of the other albums that i downloaded before i updated my itunes to th most recent update are fine. It's just the two that i downloaded afterwards. Thanks for trying though.

the message"The itun, library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file". i have windows 8. how why did this happen? how do i correct this and prevent another occurance?  I am able to access itunes on my i5, ipad, and my old i4 that i use solely as my ipod now. At the time  problem occurred, i was connected to ext hard drive that hold over 190GB music, to add to my library. I am now unable to add to my library using my laptop.  any advise/help is greatly appreciated!!

I just had the same problem and was able to fix it after trying a couple of things I found after a search.
The solution that worked for me:
Find iTunes folder - it should be in C:\Program FIles (x86) or similar depending on your operating system
Right click the entire folder (no need to open it) and click properties
    Click the security tab
Click edit and highlight the user name under which you logged in.
Click the box next to full in the allow column, which should check everything
    Click apply
    Open iTunes
    This worked for me.

  • How To Fix: "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."

I can't reopen my iTunes after I have to force quit when it does not respond. I get this message:
"The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
I've read to do the solutions. I right clicked on both the iTunes and Music folder and went to info for each. On both the lock at the bottom of the Get Info was locked. All of my users including admin can read and write all files within those folders. They are even a shared folder. I clicked on the lock to unlock it, typed in my admin password, and went to the gear to apply to all files inside. After doing that I keep getting the saved message.
I tried another way that I've found online to move my ituneslibrary folder to the desktop and then open my iTunes. In theory the iTunes is supposed to ask for where the iTunes library is. Once that is prompted you quit iTunes and drag the iTunes Library folder back to the folder from the desktop and reopen iTunes to apprently solve the problem. However, when I move the iTunes Library file to the desktop and try to reopne iTunes the icon just keeps bouncing and when I right click the application does not respond.
This problem is only resolved if I restart/shut down my macbook pro which is a 15-inch Core 2 Duo with intel. It will be 5 years old in December. I currently have Lion and the latest iTunes 10.5. This problem started in late December.

If you hold down the option key when starting iTunes, it will allow you to select a library or create a new one.
You can create a new one, and then add all of your iTunes music back in by simply dragging the old iTunes music file onto iTunes.
There are more detailed instructions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451#
It will show you how to re-build your iTunes database file.

  • Something in iTunes version 7.6.9.2 is not working on my laptop (Toshiba)

Just this week I began having problems with my iPod nano (3rd generation) and my computer. Here's the deal: A couple of weeks ago I went through some of the files on my computer and removed them because I thought I didn't need them. One of those files that I deleted was Quick Time. I never knew that I needed Quick Time in order to use iTunes. Anyhow, I immediately uninstalled my version of iTunes and reinstalled iTunes (version 7.6.9.2)+ Quick Time. At that point in time, I was having an issue with my iPod displaying that it indeed was connected, but it wasn't showing up in iTunes for me. So I called the oh-so-helpful folks at Apple Support. That first call sent me on a wild goose chase and has cost me at least $100 so far. So when I first spoke with the Apple Support person, he went through all the steps that he knew could be done (ex. uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes once again). No advice that he was giving me was working, and he basically ended our conversation (because it was later than 6 pm Pacific time and they close at 6). He told me that once my Toshiba laptop (with Windows XP Service Pack 2) rebooted, everything would be in order. It sure wasn't! When I rebooted my system, my iPod no longer even said that it was connected! It simply lit up and then faded to black when plugged in to any of my 4 USB ports. Fortunately, I live near an Apple retail store, so I took my iPod there the next morning. The guy at the store tried my iPod on the store's computer that had Windows, and it (my iPod) showed up immediately. He then asked me to bring in my laptop so that they could check and see if there was just something wrong with my computer. I returned 3 hours later at my scheduled appointment time, and all the kid who looked at my computer could say was that there was a problem with my USB ports and that I should get a new laptop! I was extremely frustrated at this point, but instead of falling for the "buy a new computer" trap, I immediately took my laptop to Geek Squad within a nearby Best Buy. The Geek Squad representative actually took about 1/2 an hour to go through everything on my computer and (once he was done running diagnostics) let me behind the counter to see for myself that there was absolutely nothing wrong with a single one of my USB ports! He even went and got a brand new iPod of the same make and model as mine and plugged it in to my computer, and it popped up instantly! So after all this messing around, I decided to call Apple again to tell them that in fact, there was nothing wrong with my iPod, and also nothing wrong with my computer. The Geek Squad rep. said to me that there is something going on in my registration of iTunes 7.6.9.2 that is not closing out that is not allowing ONLY my computer to recognize ONLY my iPod. At the end of that phone call, I agreed to pay $40 to send my iPod off to get repaired/replaced, but immediately after our conversation, I thought to myself...Hang on a minute...My iPod is obviously not the problem here, so I just paid $40 for nothing! Next morning I called Apple again to explain what had happened in my previous phone conversation with them, and the kid on the other line spent all of 2 minutes claiming that there was nothing that could be done since my iPod didn't (and still doesn't) show up under the Device Manager. As a matter of fact -- nothing shows up in my device manager, even though I have both a mouse and a printer hooked up to my computer in 2 of the USB ports (one in back and one on the side) and both of these work (and always have worked) just fine! Any advice as to what I should do with the exception of banging my head against a wall and call Apple Support and pay for more cell phone minutes that are outside of my plan's coverage??!!

I think there's on higher version than 7.6.2.9
