ITunes video too slow - any tips?

OK, my computer is a little old now. An iMac G3 400 Mhz. So far it's worked for everything I use...
However, when watching video on iTunes is all but unplayable. My computer just can't keep up. Are there any software tweaks or tricks to speed up video playback in iTunes?

Sorry but no, not really. The videos from the iTunes Music Store (and many others as well now) are compressed in a format that requires more processing power than a G3 processor can provide. The specifications for iTunes 6 say that videos require a minimum of a 500MHz G4 processor. So upgrading to a system with such a processor is going to be the only fix, I'm afraid.

  • I have an iPod Touch with 5.0.1 and iTunes with 10.5.1.42, and the problem is the syncing process. One of my videos won't get synced not matter how much I try. Other videos works. Any tips?

My iPod is the 3rd generation and it is running 5.0.1, and the iTunes I use is 10.5.1.42 for Windows. When I started syncing my iPod to include one video, iTunes will work fine, but when it is finished, I checked the videos on my iPod and found out there wasn't. I went to the iPod section, and under the movie subsection, I even clicked the video I want to be synced, and clicked on APPLY, then sync. When I tried doing it over the air, or usb, it just won't work. The diagnostic for iTunes says it was all right, nothing wrong is going on. I rebooted iTunes and my iPod several times, nothing! Any tips!???

    Does the iPod work OK?
Does it charge when connect to the computer?
Does it appear in My Computer?
Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Compare with the iPod that does work/connect.
I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1

    iPod touch (3rd generation)
iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • Itunes running too slow to use

I recently uploaded a lot of content into my itunes and moved it to an external hard drive. All of a sudden Itunes runs so slow it periodically freezes as I scroll down through my library. I uploaded about 60,000 songs to bring the total to about 67,000 and change. Do you think its the number of songs coupled with the fact that this is an old computer I am using (even though its a brand new external drive) that is causing the problem or could it be something else?

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.

  • ITUNES DOWNLOAD TOO SLOW

Im downloading the Itunes again because the update could not find my iphone and ipad!! but the server is too slow 4 hours already !!
is someone alse having the same problem

Unless you are using dial-up, that's way too slow.
What do you mean you are downloading iTunes? iTunes is part of the iOS and not a separate download for iOS devices.

  • ITunes got too slow

    Hello!
I began to store music in my Mac a year ago and now music files eat up 600GB and are still growing. I bought four FireWire external hard disk drives for them. While it's okay for large disk spaces but I feel difficulty in handling playlists and tracks in iTunes. It's too slow! Maybe due to the large size 48.4MB of iTunes database file: I have 1416 user playlists.I suppose that iTunes edits the database file each time I rename or move playlists and tracks.
I use iTunes 6 in OS X 10.3.9 on iMac G4 800MHz. I cannot upgrade to Tiger due to application compatibility. I read bad news for iTunes 7 and decided not to upgrade. I heavily depend on my own Applescript for timer recording and for playlist handling.
Will upgrading to iTunes 7 speed up playlist handling?
Will reducing number of playlists (not tracks) speed up playlist handling?
I'm thinking of upgrading my Mac.
Can Intel Mac Pro (cheapest model) handle large iTunes database file (over 100MB) smoothly?
    Thank you in advance.

Hi, all - My song playback on the computer seems to be too slow (tempo too slow), but fine on my associated iPod. Is there any control/remedy for this? I have uninstalled Garage Band and there were no improvements. Thanks.

  • Drobo FS, Airport Extreme, and iTunes way too slow

I have a Drobo FS, that contains my >600gb iTunes library, plugged in to my Airport Extreme.  I access the Airport wirelesly via a MBP and was hoping to play back music and video wirelessly and to sync my iPhone.  Unfortunately, iTunes is lagging terribly and I can not sync music to my phone.  I had a 3tb My Book attached via usb to the Airport previously without problem.  Is anyone else trying this or could offer help?  It would be much appreciated.  Thanks.

"What you can do is watch your process list to see if other processes are causing itunes to slow down. Also if you have a bunch of processes running that don't need to be then close them down to see if the performance increases." no other processes are taking any noticeable CPU time, and none over 10%, EXCEPT iTunes. Just scrolling in my library causes the CPU to max out at 100%. Try it yourself. Put a CPU indicator in your system tray. Also, downloading podcasts pegs the CPU really high. Also, iTunes misses keystrokes (probably because it hogs all the CPU), and it is slow to respond to mouse clicks. Very annoying! Just lame programming - that's all. No conflicts on my system, no other problem programs running on my system. Just one badly written application called iTunes.

  • Poor Video Streaming.  Any tips?

    Hello everyone,
My MacBook Pro really dosn't like treaming video.  Regardless if it's live feeds such as ESPN3 or preset videos from Yahoo/CSPAN etc.  Straeming HD content from sites such as HBO doesn't work too well either.  The only one that works well is Netflix but not always.
I think I have a fast WiFi connection.  When I do the speed test it's alwasy in the 6-8 Mbps range and sometimes 10Mbps.  I have an Airport Express and for everything else it works well (downloading music, podcast, surfing, updates, etc).  I have the automatic graphic switiching turned off so it's always using the high preformance graphics and my flash player is up-to-date.
Thank you so much for any help.  I really apprecate it.
    best

Hello mikeswitzer. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
As you have already figured out poor signal strength equals poor bandwidth performance. This, of course, will be noticeable for both audio and video streaming.
I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. Use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at different points around your house, by performing a simple RF site survey. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with your MacBook near the Time Capsule (TC), note the readings, and then, go to the location where you currently have the Mac Mini.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the MacBook, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at the Mac Mini, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your TC. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either the TC or the Mac Mini until they are within a 20dB SNR range.
Another option is to utilize a transceiver on the Mac Mini to try to increase the Mini's built-in AirPort antenna ability to pick up the signal from the TC. One vendor that provides these is QuickerTek.

  • I think i deleted itunes completely from my pc and tried to reinstall using remove/restore and have tried repeatedly for a week to download/install itunes to no avail - any tips on how to either retrieve or download new itunes as i have lost my music?

hi - think i deleted itunes from my p.c and have tried repeatedly to reinstall using apple helplines etc. have tried add/remove to no avail - new install/downloads just not taking place - have lost 40 gig music as previous to this my p.c was not recognising my ipod classic - any helpful tips would be appreciated?

I tried to reinstall everything but I get an error because 1) the older version of bonjour cannot be removed and 2) an older version of quicktime cannot be removed which then says that itunes can not be installed without quick time.
Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Bonjour and QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • My macbook's performance is quite slow and it freezes I haven't shut it down in over a month. I shut it down yesterday for over 12 hours yet upon starting up again the slowness persists. Removed Google chrome application the speed arose slightly any tips?

I haven't shut it down in over a month. I shut it down yesterday for over 12 hours yet upon starting up again the slowness persists. Removed Google chrome application the speed arose slightly any tips? I contacted a support member but unfortunately my warranty has run out, he suggested that may be a result of putting the mac into sleep constantly, and not shutting down and that there may be files i can clear to remedy the issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,
    Regards.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • How do experienced editors/colorists make video look better? Any tips?

I am an amateur editor working on a documentary about WW II airplanes.
The footage was shot on a Cannon HV30 in HDV with the 30p mode. The footage looks great (with some needing color correction), but still looks "videoish" when played on a standard TV.
I was just curious about what more experienced and artistic editors use to make their material look better.
I'm not talking about drastic changes like one might make to a dramatic film, but slight stylistic changes/additions to take the edge off of the video.
For example I've read about adding a very slight channel blur, reducing the contrast a bit, etc.
    Any tips would be appreciated.
BTW, I've stayed in HDV for the edit and will follow these instructions for finally ending up on a SD DVD: http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/hdv_timeline_to_sddvd.html

It really depends on the tools that you have. It sounds like your are using a consumer grade camera to shoot a documentary, which makes color grading in post that much more important. Obviously the better the camera and lighting the better your video/film is going to look. Because your working with a HV30 you're going to have to take a few extra steps to make your footage shine in post. I'm not a huge fan of Magic Bullet. If your under a deadline, and you want to impress a client, sweet use it, but if you take pride in your work as a digital artist, and want to understand how color grading works with video I would recommend getting to know these programs: After Effects, Photoshop, Color, and Final Cut Pro. Each of those programs has the following effects/parameters that you can use for color grading: Saturation, Levels, Curves, Contrast/Brightness, and Composite Modes in FCP, PS, and AE. Do not get too comfortable using 3rd party plugins otherwise you'll become dependent on them.
    Peace

  • Video loading too slow

    Hi,
I've added some video to my Captivate7 module. The video loads too slow, so by the time it comes on the timeline has already past all the vital parts.
The module was generated in SWF, which is what is required by my customer.
    Any advice?
    Thanks,
    Jake

Reduce the size of the video, or increase the size of your end user's bandwidth.

  • I am trying to play an mp4 in quicktime and the video and audio does not sync. Any tips?

I am trying to play an mp4 in quicktime and the video and audio does not sync. Any tips? This is not hack/ripped video but a legit home movie.

In this case, it looks like Quicktime wasn't very efficient in managing memory, leading to a slowdown in playback. If QT has a lag and VLC doesn't, that's more evidence.
I couldn't say why your friend's windows computer plays the media fine, while your Mac doesn't. The only thing I could suggest is to disable QT streaming video - which has been known to slow down performance.
