ITunes video wakes my iMac screen

Okay, I know this is counterintuitive, but I want to put the display of my iMac to sleep while playing video.  It's in my bedroom, and I like to listen to TV shows when going to sleep.
However, the screen will not stay asleep. Whether I use a hot corner or Ctl+Shft+Eject, the backlight turns off for a few seconds, then the backlight comes on and the screen displays the login prompt.
I want the backlight OFF, as the screen is fantastically bright even when it's black.
If iTunes is not playing video, the backlight remains asleep as it should, so this isn't a mouse driver issue or some program or network access waking the machine. If iTunes is playing music, the screen stays asleep as desired.
Is there a setting in iTunes to play only audio from a video program, or otherwise fool iTunes into not realizing it is playing video?
Alternately, a setting to tell the display to stay asleep until I manually wake it, no matter what?
I have already tried changing the preferences to play video in separate window, in artwork viewer, etc.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

The first thing we need to know is exactly which model iMac you have and which model projector you have. This will help us point you to the correct video adapter/cable. Video output standards have changed dramatically over the years utilizing both analog and digital signals. Once we know which outputs and inputs each device has we can make a recommendation.

  • Problems playing itunes videos continuosly in Full Screen

    Hi guys,
I have a small problem. I started to buy Videos in itunes music store and building my own MTV. So far, so good. My problem started when I started to buy some DVDs, converting the videos to MP4 format and then adding them to my itunes library. I have kept the same resolution than the original itunes videos, but I have changed the frame rate to have a little bit more quality.
When I select a video, iTunes plays it in full screen (as it is selected in the preferences). If the second video is another original iTunes, it continues in full screen. But as soon as one of the non iTunes videos starts, it goes to the main window and plays the video in the small section at the bottom-left of the screen (selected as "Now Playing"). Then, the next video goes back to full screen, even if it is a non-itunes one. It is very anoying since I have to put it back in Full screen manually.
Does anybody have the same issue? I am using the last release and patch level of Mac OS and itunes. I think that it might be related with the way that I imported the videos (using Handbrake 7). May be I need to use exactly the same format that Apple uses in itunes. Does anybody knows the exact video format that Apples uses? Do you think that it may be related with issue?
One last point. I have experienced the same problem in two different Macs. One Power PC and one Intel... I have already given up...
Thanks in advance for your help,
    G. Acilu

    I HAVE THE SOLUTION!
I too was experiencing non-full screen playback between music videos / movies. I discovered that this only happened if I had en EQUALIZER setting for the music video / movie. Once I had NONE as the EQUALIZER setting my music videos / movies all played back full screen from one to the next.
Change your settings in the equalizer column as suggested and see if this works for you. It solved my problem, although I do not have my desired equalizer settings in operation!

  • ITunes 10.4 and iMac screen bug.

iTunes 10.4 on Lion won't allow my 27 iMac screen to sleep manually or via energy saver preferences when accessing media via apple tv2. Reverting back to iTunes 10.3.1 fixes issue. Any fix?

    Alpemand,
    Check out this post: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1193476
The mothod mentioned involves removing 10.4 and then using Time Machine to restore your previous iTunes 10.3. Haven't tried this method myself, but others on that post have.
    Hope this helps...

  • View HD Video Input on iMac Screen

I would like to view the high-definition output of my cable company's hi-def cable box (via firewire, hdmi, dvi, usb, or composite connections) on my iMac's scree. Is there any such device that will do this? I have a high-def tv stick that does work with over-the-air ATSC broadcasts, but its only other input is standard analog cable at standard definition.
Would something like this ADS Pyro video capture device work for this?
    http://www.adstech.com/products/API-558-EFS/intro/API-558_intro.asp?pid=API-558- EFS
It appears to have hi-def inputs and output capability, but I'm not totally sure.
    Thanks!

The iMacs support Video Input since iMac mid 2009 i have Play Station 3 connected on my new 27" iMac mid 2011. Im using the Belkin's HDMI to MiniDisplay Port Adaptor (It is only posibble to use the "DisplayTargetMode" from iMac-OtherMac, you have just to press cmd+f2) For all the other devices you will need an Adaptor  cuz' otherwise u won't be able to input at all, or you will not be able to use High Resolution hope this helped ppl, gl.

  • Cant play purchased itunes videos on 5k iMac HDCP error

After a few days of smooth sailing with my brand new 5k retina iMac I tried watching some purchased tv shows on itunes and I get this instead  "THE SELECTED VIDEO WILL NOT PLAY ON YOUR DISPLAY This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)". I was able to watch episodes yesterday with no issue. There are no external monitors connected. I'm on my usual secure wireless network. I'm running version 12.1.2.27 of itunes. I have tried restarting the system, and itunes but the issue persists. Access to the file is not the issue as the files do download and start to play anywhere on the timeline but get cut off after 3  seconds or so by the error message. I have  not changed the display settings since unboxing and initial setup. The screen is at full resolution just like it was when itunes was playing shows and not giving me this error message.
Any one else got this issue?

  • I can't play my itune videos on my flat screen TV

    Dear community,
I purchased a 32" flat screen TV a couple of days ago.  I currently have Windows 8.1 on my computer.  I have a HDMI cable the connects from my computer to my TV.  I'm able to play movies from sites like Netflix, Youtube, google chrome, internet explorer and others but I cannot get my Itune movies to play
on my TV.  When I hooked the HDMI cable up the first time, when I opened Itunes, the movies played.  Now I can't open them up anymore.
I can Play music on my TV, but NOT videos.
Also, I can open up I tunes on my Computer, but NOT my TV..
WHY IS THIS-  I've searched for answers.
    Please HELP!!!!

After your earlier installations, did you repair permissions and restart your computer?
Please post the website url of these asf files.
Which os version are you using?

  • Itunes video playback has green screen

When I try to play videos in Itunes all I get is a green screen. I have tried almost every fix I have found but I can't seem to fix it. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 5160 running XP. My video driver is a XGI VolariXP vs.2.116DELL. My hardrive just recently corrupted, and I can't remember how I got rid of the green screen before.

Everything seems to be pointing towards the video drivers ... it might also be worth checking if you're getting similar sorts of green screens with your WMP, as per the following Microsoft document (they've got some suggestions we haven't looked at yet):
[The screen may appear black or green during playback when the Windows Media Player control is embedded in a Web page|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909554]
... but, I've also been checking on the Dell website, and it looks like there could be some strange issues that crop up for folks if the drivers on your Inspiron model are reinstalled in the wrong order after an operating system reinstall:
[Technical Support for Inspiron 5160: How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order|http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/document?c =us&docid=1A0C0937D62A8739E0401E0A55174744&doclang=en&l=en&s=gen]
... so I'm not sure which of those two directions it would be most prudent for you to pursue next. (We're pretty much at the extreme edge of my technical competence with video things now, and I don't want to put you wrong, Sportsman.)
So, if nobody else here drops by to contribute any additional advice, I think it might be a good idea to check in with a Dell technician for an opinion on what to try next.

  • NVidia White MacBook:  iTunes video stutters in first 2-3 minutes of play

I recently bought a white nVidia MacBook to replace my aged core duo machine with the GMA950. For years I've been using the old macbook to watch iTunes videos on my big screen TV without a hiccup. The new nVidia machine however, has a stutter with a period of about 10 seconds during the first 2-3 minutes a video from iTunes plays. After the initial period of stuttering, it settles down and may only occur once or twice during the remainder of the show.
I buy the "standard def" because the quality is good enough (I'm old enough to remember antennas high on the roof in a rural location that despite their immense size and rotational capabilities, could still only get sound + red and black snow).
I did upgrade the HD almost immediately on receipt from the stock 120gb model to a Seagate 500gb model, 5400 rpm, SATA II, 8 mb cache. I would think the replacement drive would fare favorably with stock.
Anyway, I'm wondering if others have seen this issue on white nVidia MacBooks.

  • Why can't Chapters created in GarageBand podcasts be viewed as large screens in iTunes and iPads using iMac OS 10.8.5 and iPad iOS7?

I created podcasts using GarageBand and added artwork as chapters to the audio naration. In the old iTunes they would show up as seperate large screenswhich could be easily read by other on a large monitor.  While they can be seen as tiny pictures when you click on Chapters in the menu bar at the top, they are not large enough for students or audience members to see.
I also create these to go on my iPad. Withe the old version of iTunes, they could fill up the screen on the iPad. in iOS7 they are small, do not change with the audio as they are supposed to, and you only can see the next screen if you touch the < in the top left, go back to the previous screen and then touch "Now Playing".  Since they do not automatically go to the next chapter artwork screen as the audio is playing, you would have to just know when to make the change.
This now defeats the whole purpose of the ability to add artwork or any visual guide that would go along with the podcast that was created in GarageBand and sent to iTunes.
Even when you make the podcast into a movie, which does show the artwork as the audio is playing, you still can't control it by having the chapters available as they used to be in the seperate window. This used to be in the control of the three lines on the bottom right side of the screen which now are the list of the next podcasts. In fact, on my iMac screen, the window is also very small. You can't make it larger like you could in the earlier version of iTunes.
It is such a disappointment to me that this has changed.
I can still use my old iPod to do the podcast the way I have described above, and fortunately I can show those using AppleTV on a large monitor, but if I wanted to send the podcast to students to place on the iPad, they would no longer have the full value of what GarageBand creates.
Is there any other program that could be used on the iPad that would not only have the artwork chapters in sync with the audio, but would have a way to quickly go from one chapter to another should a student wish to skip parts of a podcast and only review certain portions?
If nothing is available now, is there anyway to get a message to the iTunes people to get this back into the iOS7 devices? I wish someone could let them know what a loss it is to those of us who have used these applications for this kind of teaching or studying.
Please create another iPad app that would work with GarageBand for this kind of podcast!!!
I use an iMac OS 10.8.5 and an iPad iOS7.
    Thanks

I'm going to reply to my own message. After spending some time trying to solve this problem, I found an application called Chapter Maker in the App Store. It is reasonably priced and once you have turned your podcast sent to iTunes into a movie by opening it in QuickTime, you can either just show it through QuickTime on your desktop or laptop computer, or if you want it to work in iTunes the way it used to work, you can send it from QuickTime to iMove (go to file/Export to... iMovie) where you can then export it as a movie to your desktop and open in Chapter Maker where you can add the chapter headings back in to the podcast and Export it. You can then add it back into the movie folder in iTunes where you can see the visuals in full screen and navigate through the chapters quickly.
I also tried this out by connecting my iPad to my computer and moving the movie into my iPad. While it doesn't have the chapters visible to navigate quickly to a chapter heading, you can touch the play screen and drag it to the places you need to review. Not as nice as the old iOS version, but it also does show the visual screen using the full screen of the iPad.
As I mentioned earlier, on my older iPod, I am able to view the visuals in full screen and by touching the list at the top right, it turns over to navigate through chapters with clearly labeled headings.
I use this to study topics for myself and also to pass on information to students.
I do wish they had kept the old version the way it was, but guess that's the way things go.
Check out the application in the App Store called Chapter Maker if you are looking for the same solution to this problem. Even if you aren't, it's an easy way to add sections to any video.

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks

  • Picture quality of DVDs and iTunes HD video on my iMac less than other macn

    Hi,
This might be difficult to help with, but I've been concerned about this for some.
The picture quality of DVDs (retail movies) and iTunes HD video look far superior on my mother's and sister's laptops than on my iMac. Even a movie I just recorded off TV looks way better on our old CRT TV than on my Mac.
I can't find any way to adjust settings.
Can anybody help? What info do I need to give to help you help me?
    Regards

I'm not exactly sure what you are describing, but you can consider the following...
Laptops have smaller screens, with higher pixel density (smaller pixels). Also DVDs are typically something line 720x480 resolution. When you spread those pixels out on a larger iMac screen, especially one that is 24-inch 1920x1200, it will look less sharp. The screen may be larger, but the quality of the video image stays the same.
A 8"x11" photograph, may look fine at that size. But if you blow it up to poster size, it will probably look terrible.
iTunes HD is usually 1280x720. That should look pretty good on an iMac's larger screen. But if you are comparing (side-by-side) how sharp the same video looks on a small laptop screen, it will look sharper on the small screen with less area and smaller pixels. But if you back up a few feet from the iMac when you are using +full screen+ mode (to TV viewing distance), it should look about the same.
Even a movie I just recorded off TV looks way better on our old CRT TV than on my Mac.
CRT TV's are optimized to show motion, with a technique called interlacing. If you freeze a frame (pause), it will look terrible. Since an iMac's display will not use interlacing, the same video will not look as good, especially when the size is increased. The quality of showing the same video on an iMac will be impacted by the method used to transfer it to the iMac. If it is encoded to a digital format, there will be loss of quality in that process.

  • How do i stream my iMac screen to a device that accepts component video only

I have a new iMac (2015) and I want to send my screen from my mac to a video switcher called a NewTek Tricaster 40. It only accepts component or composite video input. I want to send my iMac's screen to it in real time so I can incorporate it into my live video productions. I have attempted to use several HDMI to component converters and none have worked. I am using the Kanex Pro HDMI to Component Converter to convert the HDMI out from two HD camcorders to component and sending that into my Tricaster 40. It is seeing the signal just fine and giving me solid HD video. So I attempted to use the same Kanex Pro for the iMac. First I used apple's lightning to HDMI cable then plugged that HDMI into another Kanex Pro HDMI to component converter. No dice. I tried all the component video settings: 1080p 30PsF, 1080 24PsF, 1080i, 720p, 720/30p, 720/24p. None worked

Next I purchased an apple lightning to DVI adaptor. Then I plugged the DVI into this Lindy DVI to component converter. It also failed at all resolutions. None worked for SD resolutions either.

After hunting for a solution someone suggested that HDCP protection might be my problem. Apparently in an effort to keep people form pirating movies Microsoft and apple use HDCP to keep people form making this conversion? I'm nor sure how this works I just know that I am leagaly allowed to incorporate brief news clips into my news comentary on my youtub channel so long as I cite them and add to them substantially. I do both. So is HDCP my issue? If so what is the work around?

NewTek has a program called IVGA that will allow me to share my screen over my local network but the frame rate is horribly choppy and is not useful for capturing video clips form youtube or game play.
Bottom line how do I stream high quality (720 /24p minimum) video from my iMac to a device that only accepts component video in.

    On my iMac:
I had to go into my device settings > Display
then I set the "Optimize for:" to "CAT-6066"
after that I selected the "Scaled" option right underneath
then i selected 1080i because the Kanex Pro is designed to convert 1080i into component
I was then able to get my NewTek Tricaster 40 to recognize that component signal from the Kanex Pro and add it to my production as 1080i or as 1080p/30. The frame rate looks great and the video quality is very smooth and in real time.
