ITunes - Vista - Music on Seperate Drive

OK so I updated to Vista, and did a clean install. All my music was saved on a seperate drive so that wasn't an issue, or so I thought. I downloaed and installed iTunes last night, and left it sorting through my 140+GB of music. When I got up this AM all I had in itunes were the 6 or so songs Vista installed. How can I import in 1 shot my old shared music file without going album by album? How can I get iTunes to do another search?

File -> Add folder to library.
Or drag the music folder onto the iTunes library in iTunes.

  • ITunes adding music from external drive to multiple users

    Here's what I have:
My iMac currently has 3 different user accounts on it. My iTunes library is currently stored on my external HD and its location is set to route to the external drive on both accounts. I currently have both boxes checked to Keep files organized in the iTunes folder (which is on my external HD).
Issue: iTunes does not automatically update the library information from the external drive to the actual iTunes player/list. So, for instance, if I currently added a song to my library via cd on User A's account, it will automatically save to the external drive...but when i log into User B, it will not show the new song in that iTunes player/list. Instead I have to go find the file on the external drive and drag it into the iTunes.
Basically, how can I make it so that any time new music is added to the external hard drive, iTunes will automatically add it into the player w/o me having to manually move it over?

iTunes has no "folder watch" feature, so what you're experiencing is normal and cannot be solved without third-party software. Hazel is a third-party utility that claims to be able to watch a folder and automatically add an added track to iTunes. I haven't tried it, but you might want to take a look. Otherwise, you have to add the tracks manually.

  • : ...( HELP!!!! Is there a way or a program to scan & Find only iTunes purchased music on hard drive?

My Brother Committed Suicide 2 years ago, I was given his pc with his purchased iTunes music, however his pc was pretty much dead, I was able to retrieve the music but stupidly I mixed it with all the mp3's and aac music already on my hard drive.. Is there a a program that can search my hard drive and only retrieve or find the music in my pc that is iTunes purchased? I just find it hard to lose the 200+ gbs of music he bought, I do not have internet at home and I do not even know his iTunes accound information although I have asked apple for it but not reply. I know its a security thing so anyways I am asking if anyone knows of a program or a way to scan my drive and retrieve ONLY the purchased songs? I have attempted to scan my drive with iTunes its self and it made more of a mess, mashing the mp3, m4a, m4p, wma music all into the same files and ugh what a mess so I am trying to fix it in the simpliest way possible without losing the music. Thanks for your help anyone who responds Lachlan Mykael Kent

In the new message composition window, right next to the Account box under the Subject field, there should be a little box with 3 horizontal lines and a down arrow. Click on it to find the Bcc: option.

  • Seperate Drive

I might be getting a mac pro soon and I was wondering could I install Vista on a seperate drive?
On My MBP I had to partition my leopard disk for vista on a mac pro instead of partitioning the drive your mac os is on can you partition to use boot camp on a different hdd like hdd 2

If you have a new unformatted disk arriving (the WD Caviar 640GB is down to $85 and great performance) just boot from Vista and format and install. I would pull the OS X drive during this phase.
ie, you can use BootCamp Assistant, or you can format the drive directly.
BootCamp leave the drive partition as FAT so you have to delete/create NTFS where the FAT volume was anyway.

Right click on your device in the device list and choose "transfer purchses" to copy all music bought in iTunes to your new iTunes library.
For all other media you'll have to use 3rd party software, examples are mentioned in this thread:

    Hello ryane84
The easiest and most efficient way to copy your music is to follow the steps under the External drive section. Make sure that you have organized the iTunes library first before you copy it over. Then put the copied iTunes folder in the same Music folder on your computer.

Hopefully you moved the entire iTunes Media (or iTunes Music) folder to a new path on your external drive. Copy your iTunes library folder out to the root of the external drive, e.g. X:\iTunes (where X: is your external drive), then move the media folder inside it. Hold down shift as you start iTUnes and keep holding untila asked to choose or create a library. Choose the library at X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl. Should all be good.
Failing that, download and run my FindTracks script and point it at the new location of your media folder.

  • HT1751 How can I move iTunes Music from one drive to another?

I'm having trouble ... hoping someone can help.
    Windows XP Pro.
My MP3s were on a networked Data Drive (Z:).  I drag the songs I want on iTunes from there to the iTunes program, and it's library
    was in the "normal" place (\Documents and Settings\MyName\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music ).
I copied my iTunes library folder onto an external drive and also copied the Z drive MP3s onto the external drive. I then put the MP3s
on a new computer with Windows XP Pro, downloaded the latest version of iTunes on the new computer, and then drug the iTunes
folder from the external drive onto the new computer in the exact same "normal" place as above.
When I open iTunes, my music is not there for some reason.  Is there any way to correct this sort of readding all my music and all
    my cover art?
    Thank you.

    Thank you for the response.
I cannot find the file   iTunes Library.itl   ...
I have the structure you mention:
<User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl where <User's Music> is the music folder of the profile as defined by the operating system.
but that file is not there (I looked in the preferences of iTunes in order to find the location and that is the location it stated).
"iTunes can be connected to a library in a different location by holding down shift as you start it and clicking Choose from the options to Choose or Create a library."
I can do this, but again, there is no .itl file that I can find ... now I'm more confused         Of course, if I fire up my old computer, there is no drive Z any longer, so while all my music appears on iTunes, I cannot click on any as it then will not be able to find the song on the drive that no longer exists.
I am going to do a search on the old computer for that .itl file to see if it was just in some other place for some reason.

  • ITunes installed on a new drive with music on an old drive: how to keep the music data?

I had iTunes installed on my old HDD with all my music on it. It was the drive C:\
I just installed a new SSD (now the C:\ drive) in my computer. I also installed iTunes on it. I want to leave my music on my old HDD (now the G:\ drive). I can scan with iTunes for my music on my old G:\ drive, but that means I won't have the star ratings nor the play count...
I tried to copy and paste the iTunes Library.xml from my old G:\ to my new C:\. When I opened iTunes, it had all my music and the data, but I had to locate manually every single song (in a 7000+ songs library, this is a bit of a problem).
Is there a way to edit the iTunes_library.xml file to change the path of every song in it (from C:\ to G:\) since this seems to be the issue? Or how could I keep my music on my G:\ drive and itunes on my C:\ drive while keeping my music data?
    Thank you!

    Hello papapavvv,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have your iTunes Library on your G:\ drive, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.  Follow these steps to point iTunes to your G:\ drive:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.

  • Hi, my Ipod Schuffle (4 gen) dissapears from windows vista right after I execute Itunes, I've change the drive letter, erase temps in App data file, verified USB drivers, etc... Can someone guide on how to solve this?

Hi, my Ipod Schuffle (4 gen) dissapears from windows vista right after I execute Itunes, I've change the drive letter, erase temps in App data file, verified USB drivers, etc... Can someone guide on how to solve this?

If you want the shuffle to be always visible in Windows (outside of iTunes), you need to Enable disk use.
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, select the Summary tab.  You should see a checkbox that says Enable disk use.  Check it and click Apply.
NOTE:  If disk use is enabled, you have to Eject the shuffle in iTunes, BEFORE you physically disconnect it.  If disk use is NOT enabled, you can disconnect the shuffle at any time, as long as iTunes is not doing something with it at that moment (such as syncing); the shuffle's light will then be blinking (to indicate DO NOT DISCONNECT).
So, unless you want to use the shuffle like a USB flash drive (carry random files on it), you may want to NOT Enable disk use.

  • Itunes in Windows Vista=no cd rom drive

I got a new computer loaded w/Windows Vista. I installed itunes. Noticed later Cd-dvd drive didn't show up in My Computer. I found a thread on a microsoft site that had me edit the Registry. My cd-dvd drive came back...Then itunes told me some of my drivers were missing and to repair Ituness. I repaired itunes. My cd-dvd drive is now gone again. HOw can I get my drive back, keep Itunes happy, and not go nuts?
    thanksin advance

I had this problem while working on a pc at my office. When I searched every where for it the only thing I could find is the registry key that you have to remove. We found a way to fix it though. The registry key is the driver that itunes uses to access the optical drive so it can burn with it, but there is a conflict. What must be done is either uninstall itunes or remove that registry key so you can have access to the optical device. Do all the firmware upgrades for the optical drives and update the bios for the pc to the latest addition. install itunes, and update to the latest version (you will probably lose your optical drive again). No go to the windows updater and make sure you get and install ALL latest updates. Afterwords, restart, you should be able to see your cd drive, if not, you probably have roxio and its conflicting with itunes. If you uninstall roxio, you will be able to use your itunes to burn cd's and you can see the drive. If you need roxio and still having the problem, remove the registry key again. The only thing it disables is the ability for itunes to burn cd's and it will tell you everytime you open it that it needs to be repaired, but it will work fine with out it so don't repair it. This is as far as I have gotten.

  • HT1473 I want to keep my music on my external hard drive to free up room on my computer how do i get itunes to recognise the hard drive to play the music?

I would like to keep all my music on my external hard drive but I can't seem to get itunes to recognise my hard drive.  How do I get itunes to recognise my hard drive so I can play the music off there rather than copying the files over each time?

Click the icon to launch iTunes
Immediately press and hold down the shift key
Keep holding shift until asked to create or choose a library
If iTunes opens normally close and go back to step 1.
Browse to the iTunes Library.itl file you want to open.

Right-click(Windows) or control-click(Mac) any item in the iTunes library other than a rented movie, reveal it in the Windows Explorer or Finder, and navigate up the folder hierarchy.

I recently bought a Macbook air.  I had 80gb so I moved iTunes onto an external hard drive.   How do i move that music onto my iPod classic?

You can only sysc with one iTunes library. The new computer is a new library. You have to restore your iPod on the new conputer and then sync.
