ITunes wants Quicktime 7.5.5

Suddenly, I can't open my iTunes at all.  I get an error notice stating it needs Quicktime updated to 7.5.5.  Currently I have QT 7.5 Pro.  I can't find an update or download to 7.5.5 anywhere.  A little help?

Try the latest version of QuickTime for Mac OS X 105, 7.7, which if Software Update won't bring it up can be downloaded here:

  • Error Messages for iTunes and Quicktime, what do I do?

Hello, I'm in need of some help.
Let me walk you all through what I did for the last 4 hours:
(important note: I suck at far too much computer stuff, so I am fully aware that as you read the following, at certain points I probably made the problem much worse than it needed to be, I am not proud of this, but everything you read did happen, stupid as it probably was for me to pursue the problems in the particular way that I did. Hindsight is 20/20.)
I updated my iTunes v7.7 to v8.0 today, and after trying it out for a while decided that I didn't like it and wanted to go back to what I was using before.
So, because I didn't know what else to do, I tried to re-install the original iTunes software that came with my iPod (a 20gig classic I bought in 2004). That version of iTunes was v6.0 (again, 3 years ago).
Part way through the installation process, I got a message that said that, because I had a newer version of iTunes on the computer already, it wouldn't install the version on the disk.
So I uninstalled v8.0, restarted my computer, and installed the v6.0 from the CD-ROM I had.
It was then that I found I had NONE of the 6000+ songs in my iTunes window. I checked my computers files to find that they were still in the library, but my iTunes screen was completely devoid of all my music.
So I tried to get it all back on the player. I discovered that by right-clicking "Play" for the individual files from the folders in my iTunes that they would come up on the player, but that meant that I'd be clicking in 6000+ songs, one by one, till they were all back. I didn't want to do that.
So I tried a system restore (again, read "important note" at top of post). After that happened and I was looking at my desktop again, tried opening iTunes, and it gave me a message that said:
"iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
And it asks if I wanna send an error report. I decline, then try opening Quicktime. Same message. So I try to uninstall both programs (i know, i know, "important note"), and iTunes uninstalls, Quicktime does not, because, as my computer puts it, "a fatal error occurs."
But since I have iTunes uninstalled, I go to apples site and download iTunes v8.0 again. After waiting for all that to get done, I get the same error message.
So I peruse this very discussion forum, and after looking for a good while at what is being recommended I go to a site and download v7.7 again.
Again, I get the same error message.
So here I am. I've tried working it out myself for the last 4 hours, and I seem to have made things worse.
So please, please, PLEASE, I ask for any help you can provide.
Can I get my iTunes back?
    Is my Quicktime corrupted now?
    Am I totally screwed?

I had the same problem when I went to upgrade to 8 and then downgrade back to 7.7. To fix this is a little involved, but you can do it. Let me put it this way, I talked my mother through it on the phone, and she has a hard time finding the power button So no worries, I'll help you get back up and running. I am running Vista now, so I am going off of memory for Vista, so bear with me.
    I would do the following:
    1. Uninstall both iTunes and Quicktime by going to Control Panel-Add Remove Programs, and choosing first Quicktime then iTunes.
    2. Clean your registry. Easy now, it is not that hard. To do it, go to http://www.ccleaner.com/download and download CCleaner. It is free and has NO spyware. Install it and run the registry cleaner. It will remove any trace of both programs from the registry. Now you have 2 choices.
3a. Now I would install iTunes 8. Because you already installed it once, it converted its database file that it uses to track the library and play lists up to the iTunes 8 standard.
3b. If you have no problem loosing your playlists and library settings, you can go back to iTunes 7.7. To do this, first search for "itunes.ttl". To do this, go to Start-Search Files and Folders- and type in "iTunes.ttl" Once the search finishes, it will tell you where it is located. Navigate there using Windows Explorer or My Computer and delete it. Now you can install iTunes 7.7 with out any errors. You will not loose any files! just your playlists and it will not remember what is in your library.
As far as adding your songs again, did you try to re-importing your music? If you go to the file menu-add folder to library. It will bring up a dialogue box that will allow you to browse to the folder with your music.
Let me know if this works. I will help in anyway I can.
    Good Luck,
    linesma

  • Itunes and Quicktime won't open.

I recently had a problem with Itunes, which deleted anything new I purchased or downloaded. I found out that if I rebuilt the library the problem could be solved, but I didn't want to risk losing any data so I didn't do it. I figured I'd wait for an update that would fix it and a couple days later I downloaded Itunes 7.3.1. The download did not go smoothly at all. During the course of it: it had to stop downloading and download both Itunes and Quicktime seperatly and it kept saying that my Quicktime was not up to date (something it's been saying for the last couple months). I've tried fixing that before, but when I do it prevents me from going into Itunes.
Now after downloading 7.3.1 neither one of the programs will open. Itunes says, "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration." and Quicktime says, "Runtime Error! ... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."
I'm starting to get really annoyed with Itunes, for the last couple months it's had nothing but problems. Can someone please help me.
      Windows XP

    Hi Clyde33.
Itunes says, "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration."
Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
Quicktime says, "Runtime Error! ... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."

  • Can't install or run itunes or quicktime in Windows

First, I own several Macs and one Windows machine. The problem is with the Windows machine (and yes I downloaded the Windows version, hehe).
I've actually been having hard drive trouble with this machine, so this is a fresh installation of the OS, which is Windows XP Pro x64, fully updated as of today. Due to all of my attempts at trouble shooting my hardware problems, I've reinstalled the OS several times, along with itunes and quicktime, and the installations all worked each time (minus the drive failure part, hehe), *except for this time*. Now that I'm using an apparently good drive, I can't get quicktime and itunes to work.
What they do is install, with or without error. If they install with an error, it's a -3 error, or something like that. They never run. I mean, I click on the icons, and all I get is an hourglass, and then nothing (sometimes I get a crash report that is meaningless to me, oh and one time I got an error about some file called run32.dll or something). I can't uninstall the software because whenever I try, it says it completed, but upon rebooting, the stupid quicktime icons are still there (although I think it manages to remove itunes but I'm not 100% sure). There is an uninstaller in the quicktime folder, but even it won't run.
I run Avast antivirus, but I have always been running this and it never caused problems before. I am a low risk when it comes to getting infected with stuff anyway, because I'm very careful when I use the internet (I don't think I've ever seen a piece of spyware before in my life, or a virus), I'm behind a NAT router that has all ports closed, and I've turned off certain network features on this machine that would normally make it highly insecure.
I've tried that Windows Installer Cleaner thing, but that didn't do anything.
I'm not having any trouble with any other piece of software.
Any suggestions? This isn't a huge issue for me, since I have other computers I can run itunes on, but it's really bugging me in a way because it was working fine literally just a couple of days ago. Now that I've reinstalled the OS yet again, though, it won't work.
    Windows XP Pro x64

oh, i know what you mean ... we don't have your specific problem, but the noir household counts itself amongst the ranks of people who had their Outlook Express address books blown up by KB911567.
we've had mixed success with trying to convince Windows Update to stop reinstalling that beast. so we're also planning to implement the following strategy from the latest PCWorld's bugs and fixes column (it appears to be for standard XP, but fingers crossed it should work for x64 too):
Set Windows Update to automatically download patches, but to install them only when you say so. Open the Control panel, choose System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab. Select Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them, and click OK.
then do custom installs of downloaded updates. then we can check to see if the beastly ones have somehow made their way back onto the list of updates that XP wants to install.
( ... there seem to have been a lot of Windows-update-related problems, lately ... but perhaps it's just that a bunch of them are hitting me where i live, so i'm noticing them more ... )
    love, b

  • ITunes and QuickTime stopped working after an upgrade...

I have been pulling my hair out trying to get my iTunes working again. Here is what I have done already in order:
    1. Does not work regardless of user (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302856)
    2. Tried running with changes to MSCONFIG
    - Ran according to Apple Support Web Site (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538)
    - Ran in Diagnostics mode
    - Ran in /SAFEMODE
    3. Uninstalled and removed from any reference from registry
    4. Removed iTunes configuration files (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302386)
    5. Installed WinInspector Spy and launched iTunes to see what happened. Unfortunately I have not figured out how to copy and paste the log, but it shows the iTunes window class being created, a bunch of other stuff, then the OfficeWatson class, stuff and then the infamous "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. After hitting the Send Error Report, I see the OfficeWatson window being destroyed and that is it. This leads me to believe that the problem is somehow with the outlook integration between iTunes and Windows? So I looked in my Add/Remove programs and sure enough Office and Outlook were upgraded the day after the last time i was able to use iTunes. So I tried uninstalling Office, iTunes and QuickTime. QuickTime refused to uninstalled claiming a fatal error. I then forcably removed it as described in the apple knowledge paper. Another interesting point, when I ran QuickTime, nothing happens, not even a crash message. When I run QuickTime Preferences from the system tray, the dialog shows, but when I click on the FileTypes tab, I get a RUNDLL error: "An exception occurred while trying to run "Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTime.cpl".
I also tried running StraceNtX.exe against it, but it doesnt create the right environment for iTunes (it thinks it is Windows 2000 and does have the right service pack).
PLEASE can someone help? This is the second time this has happened to me. The first time was on another computer that came with a "real" restore point (not the stupid one Windows has that does not work) and I solved it by simply restoring back in time. This time I do not have that option!
ARGH - I really do not want to have to use Media Player.
Is there a way to force a stack trace? I am a UNIX programmer and not familiar with Windoze.

It sounds as though things have got pretty screwed up. If you couldn't clean things up properly with the MS installer cleaup, there is thread on cleaning up uninstall information in the registry.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3637190&#3637190
I am not sure that I have anything more to offer as you appear to have done most things. Have you tried turning off all security software while doing the install, and doing the MSconfig thing with just Quicktime. Presumably your system is free of malware?
As a matter of interst, what happens if you have the task manager running when you start Quicktime, does it start and then stop, or keep running or not start at all?
A few people seem to have these intractable problems and the forum expert on this has been away since christmas, but you could try searching the forum for "b noir" posts about install/launch problems.

  • Can't get videos to work in iTunes(OR QuickTime)

I have the latest version of iTunes, and I can't seem to get any videos to play. .mp4, .m4v, .mov, or .avi. I've been encoding using SUPERs iPod setting, and trying a few settings I found on google. These are SUPERs settings:
    Container - mp4
    Video Codec-h.264/AVC
    Audio Codec-AAC LC
    Video Size-480*320
    Aspect-3:2
    FPS-25
    Bitrate-672
    Hi-Quality and 48k Audio checked
    Sampling Frequency-44100
    Channels-2
    Bitrate-64
I just tried using Videora iPod Converter too, and that failed as well(The file all turns out okay, but iTunes and Quicktime won't read it). I used to be able to get this to work(Same computer, a few months back, and the videos all started at the same format), but just lately it won't seem to work(System Restore is not an option). Help?

    http://i35.tinypic.com/otdhyx.png
This is SUPER, what I use to convert videos. All the settings I have selected are what I used to get the video to work. The problem I had before is that someone told me that the iPod uses MPEG-4 video, and I assumed that .mp4 was the file extension(Output Container sets what the file extension will be) for MPEG-4. Turns out, it's not. The OUTPUT VIDEO CODEC needed to be MPEG-4, but what I had it set to was H.264/AVC. So the Output Container was right, just not the Output Video Codec.
So basically, the fix is to just use the right settings Which, if you use SUPER, is everything I have shown(Adjust the bitrates to your liking. More is higher quality, less battery life. I just watched "Wanted" last night with those current settings, and it looked and sounded alright, but I'll probably put the audio up to the next level for any future movies).

  • Both ITunes and Quicktime will not open

I can't open either ITunes or Quicktime. Each time, I get the iTunes or QuickTime Player "has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I tried repairing both, was able to uninstall & reinstall iTunes but still get same error. Quicktime would not uninstall, removed it through Windows Install Clean Up, cannot re-install.
    Here are the errors:
    AppName: itunes.exe AppVer: 7.6.2.9 ModName: quicktimestreamingauthoring.qtx
    ModVer: 7.4.5.67 Offset: 0001685c
    EventType : BEX P1 : QuickTimePlayer.exe P2 : 7.4.5.67 P3 : 47edaedf

    P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000
And the one during the Quicktime install:
    Error writing to file: C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QuickTimeStreaming.Resources\ QuickTimeStreaming.Resources.qtr
Verify if you have access to that directory
Please help! I am pulling my hair out!

I wish I had an answer for you; all I can say is, you're not alone. I've been unable to open iTunes (7.6.2) all day, and after reading your post, I tried QuickTime: yep, it only crashes, just like iTunes. FWIW, here's what I tried: restart, repair disk permissions, CD start, using Time Machine to restore iTunes 7.6.1 (now I have both that and 7.6.2, but neither works), calling Apple tech support (they want $49 to see if they can come up with something else).
Also FWIW, this problem started this morning; last night, I upgraded Safari (3.1.1). I don't know why there'd be a connection, but...?

  • ITunes and Quicktime hanging on start up after Quicktime v7 update

    Heya,

    hp   Windows XP

Have you tried removal of all related programs with installer cleanup of any that don't uninstall? I wonder if a problem with Apple Software update is at the root of this, but it is probably best to go straight to the full removal.
Here is a method for removal, cleanup and install.
Download a fresh copy of iTunes and the stand alone version of Quicktime (the one without iTunes)
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install Microsoft Installer cleanup utility, there are instructions on the page as well as the download. Note that what you download is the installer not the program – you have to run it to install the program.
To run the program – All Programs>>Windows Install Cleanup
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Now use the following method to remove iTunes and its components:
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
*If you hit a problem with one of the uninstalls don't worry*, carry on with the deleting of files and folders as directed in the method.
When you get to deleting Quicktime files in the system32 folder as advised in the method, you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart your PC.
Run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility. (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up)
Remove any references you find to the programs you removed - strictly speaking you only need to worry about those programs where the uninstall failed.
If you don’t see an entry for one of the programs that did not uninstall, look out for blank entries or numeric entries that look like version numbers e.g. 7.x for Quicktime or 1.x for Bonjour.
    restart your PC
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check that it works.
    If it does, install iTunes.

  • ITunes and Quicktime issue (Please Help)

So last night I download the update for iTunes. Everything seemed to be going fine, I didn't have any problems. This morning I turn on my computer and try to run iTunes and it gives me an error message, an dwon't even open iTunes. Not only that, I can't run any Quicktime file, it gives me the same message. I downloaded the installer again and attempted to repair iTunes. It said I was sucessful, but when I tried opening iTunes or Quicktime the error still appeared. This is really frustrating, this is what I get for updating? Someone please help!

you'll probably want to run the standalone quicktime install
also, what is the error message that you are getting?
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
if that doesn't work, follow these steps

  • I've updated to newest itunes and Quicktime--is it safe to update my ipod?

Before I do something I will have trouble undoing, I was wondering if most people are having success with the newest versions of itunes and Quicktime. Everything seems to be running fine on my computer--movies play, etc.--but I don't want to update my ipod until I'm reasonably sure things will work fine there as well.
Also, I was wondering how exactly to purchase the new Quicktime key that Software Update says I'll need. I went to the Quicktime site but was a little confused--do I actually need to purchase Quicktime Pro? Can you download the key or do you have to wait for the software to arrive in the mail? (If movies are playing fine in itunes, does that mean I don't need a new key?) Again, I don't want to update my ipod only to find out that I've screwed things up.
By the way, I have the 30G video ipod.
Thanks to anyone who can help me with this.

I have updated mine (a brand new Nano and a 60 GB iPod Photo) with no trouble whatsoever. I had some minor glitches with the iTunes 7.0 update, but since the 7.0.2 update all's right with the world.
I would go ahead and update your iPod now.

  • Can't Install iTunes because QuickTime recognizes an older version.

I tried to upgrade my iTunes from 7.4 to 7.6 but I could not so I completly uninstalled iTunes and QuickTime. When I reinstalled iTunes I got an error message saying "A newer version of QuickTime is already installed. This installation cannot proceed wihle the newer version of QuickTime is installed." I have uninstalled everything apple related. I have downloaded the Windows utility cleaner and I am still having problems. I forgot to add that I am using Windows Vista 32 Bit. I cleared my Temp and had my brother come over and help me open the registry and we deleted every QuickTime related file. I still have this error message and do not know what to do. Any help would be much appreiciated. It is a good thing I backed up my Library on a disk.

Take a look in Task Manager just to see if anything Apple related is running, perhaps iPod or Apple mobile device related. Also right click on My Computer go to Manage + to expand Services and Applications then click on Services, to also see if anything Apple related is running.
One more thing comes to mind. There has been problems with QT instalations when K-Lite & Ace codecs have been installed on a computer. If you go to Search, you may want to look up some of b noir's post on this issue, if in fact these codecs were installed on the computer.

  • After I downloaded the most recent versions of itunes and quicktime  I cannot play any videos, tutorials.  Thank you for any help.

Videos will not play after downloading the mmost recent versions of Itunes and Quicktime.  What can I do?  The video tries to start but freezes and does not respond.

Appreciate the suggestion.  I did the repair, but videos still don't play.
I tried putting quicktime in "safe mode", but that also did not solve the video-play problem.
However, I downloaded a video and that video does play.
A video may start but quickly freezes.
In itunes is the player "quicktime or itunes"?
When I open the quicktime player(its appearance doesn't look like a player with controls for play, pause, etc.).
Maybe the controls appear when play begins' however, then I try to open any song of video, I always get the same message:  "Do you want to allow this website to open a program on your computer(in itunes, I assume).)
If i choose "yes" I get an error message.
I thought this additional information might be helpful, but you can just answer the original question if you have some additional ideas.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Issue installing iTunes with Quicktime 7.6

I downloaded iTunes and it came with Quicktime. I went to install it and I got the following error message:
Outlook is currently running on this computer. If proceed without quitting Outlook, it is highly recommended that you restart Outlook after installation.
What I want to know is:
A.) What does Microsoft Outlook have to do with iTunes and Quicktime when Outlook is an email program
B.) I don't even have Outlook running at all so why would it say that it is "currently running on this computer". I have the program installed but it is not opened and is not running in the background.
    Did I do something wrong?

Glad to see that my dochter is not the only one having this issue !!
Tried many times to install iTunes/un-install but always comeback to the same issue since the 10.2.1 upgrade. Before it was working properly.
    No solution yet ?

  • I only want quicktime

I'm new on these forums and was just wondering if there was any way to get just quicktime installed without having to go through the hassle of installing the itunes S**TE?
If anyone knows of the best way of doing this then I would like to know asap because then I could post how to do it on my website because I know a lot of people who JUST WANT QUICKTIME and no other C**P installing on their pc at the same time.
Also I don't know if anyone else has had any trouble trying to contact apple via e-mail but I have been all over their bloody website and cannot find any e-mail links for support on itunes or quicktime, I mean what is with that, instead of e-mailing them I have to put a post in a rubbish forum to try get some sensible answer from someone else other than themselves.
If anyone has a contact e-mail for support on itunes or quicktime then i would like to know what they are so that i can have a go at them about their rubbish software.
Any response would be greatly appreciated and you can reply to me via this post or by e-mail on [email protected]

I have one solution for you.. I just also bought my Ipod VIdeo 60 GB 3 days ago and having problem with Quicktime 7.0.3.
Everytime I click on Itunes Icon on my desktop, it says you have older version of Quicktime 7.0.2, Itunes need 7.0.3 or later to be able to play Itunes, Please reinstall Itunes....I did reintalling adn uninstalling millions of times.. still it was the same problem.
Now what I recommend is to uninstall all Quicktime version and Itunes in your computer. Delete everytime you have... shutdown wait for couple of minutes and then go to the above site address I provided. Only download Quicktime alone. Do not download qiucktime and itunes together.. It is no good. And do not go to Apple site to download because it will download together.. That's not what we want. Download Quicktime 7.0.3 version for windows. After successful installation.. Only then Go to apple site and only download Itunes alone. This will work I guaranteed. Because mine is working now!!! Let me know the outcome.. Good luck!!
