ITunes wants to replace IPod contents with New Laptop Library

Help please guys. Please bear with me while I will try and explain what my problem is.
Purchased new laptop, loaded ITunes, authorised laptop as the 3rd of my 5 allowable computers, then finally transferred all purchased content to my Laptop via my IPod. I have since purchased various TV shows and songs off ITunes to my Laptop ITunes library. I have only now tried to sync my IPod for the first time with my Laptop and noticed that ITunes did not sync this new content. I then discovered that the reason for this may have been due to all the sync options were unchecked for all the media types which would explain why nothing happened.
Simple, I thought. I would check all the media types for sync and end of. No such luck. Each time I checked the option to sync any of the media type; a message would appear to warn me that the contents of my IPod would be replaced by the contents of my ITunes library. This I do not want. I wish to keep all my purchased content held on both my laptop and my IPod. Isn’t the point of synchronisation to update both the computer and IPod making sure both devices contain the same up-to date media irrespective to the contents of either.
Am I missing something really simple here or are these things made deliberately difficult?
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks –tred3

  • Replacing Ipod mini with New nano,

    Hi
I have purchased my wife to be a new Ipod nano (8gb), she currently uses an Ipod mini (6GB). We use the same PC & to keep both her mini and my 30Gb Ipod video. So she has to manually manage the tunes on her mini.
Now she has this new nano, she wants put the same songs on her shiney blue nano, but this as taken hers hours to shift through all 6000 tracks that we have collected in itunes.
So the question is, is there a simple way to copy the same tracks on the old mini to the new nano?

*is there a simple way to copy the same tracks on the old mini to the new nano?*
You can't copy from one iPod to another and since the old one is being managed manually then you've no original single source to sync from so I'm afraid there is no simple answer.
Something you might want to consider for managing smaller iPods with a large shared library is the option "Sync Music - selected Playlists". Syncing selected playlists is just like syncing your whole library only on a smaller scale and more "selectively". This is particularly useful when your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod. When your iPod is is set to sync selected playlists it automatically picks up any changes you made to that playlist in iTunes since you last connected. Anything you added to the playlist will be added to the iPod, anything you deleted from it will be deleted from the iPod. In other words the iTunes playlist and the iPod are kept "in sync". In future if you were to add another iPod it could sync to the same source playlist.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update the iPod from, call it -My iPod Nano for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod: Syncing Music to iPod

  • Why won't my iPod sync with new, empty library?

Had some problems with my laptop and had to reformat hard disk. Stupidly, didn't back up iTunes library. All the songs are still on the iPod but I can't download them to iTunes. Error message says iPod cannot sync with this library becasue it is set up to sync with another library (I assume that's the one I erased). Is there any way to download the songs on my iPod into a library on my laptop? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Issue with syncing iPod touch with new laptop

Hi, I am asking on behalf of my brother (who is very frustrated) about why his windows laptop is not syncing properly with his iPod touch 4th gen. He claims to have authorized the machine with his iTunes account but every time he syncs the iPod with the laptop, it demands that he delete all of his music and resync it. So he does as it asks and when he plugs it in again later, iTunes wants him to delete everything. He does have his device authorized with a few other computers. Could he solve his problem by deauthorizing them since he never plans to use them again? Thanks for any and all help.

To not lose anything do the following:

The computer has to be authorized for his iTunes account. Since you can on have five computer authorized, he should deauthorize any unnecessary computer.

  • Old computer dying want to use external drive with new laptop ........... HOW ??

need to get laptop to run my iTunes library from old dying comp. Have a 500gb external drive but what do i do ??

okay, i had to collect my thoughts for a moment
... but I don't have an internal library of music on this machine.
is *this machine* the new Mac ?
How do I set up iTunes to play from an external library for the first time?
the files will have to be added to iTunes. however, with the correct settings, they can be put straight on the external.
in order to set up iTunes on the new Mac, you will have to launch it. with the external drive mounted on your new Mac's desktop, go iTunes > preferences > advanced and point +iTunes media folder location+ to the external. this will cause iTunes to put all newly added content in that location.
also on the advanced tab, check +keep iTunes media folder organized+ and +copy files to ... when adding to library+.
And how do I add my backed up music from my previous iTunes to that external drive's new music library?
did you back up the music to disk ? if so, you should probably authorize iTunes with your iTMS account details, then just pop in the disk(s) and add the content to your library.
if you have backed up to an external HD, use the +add to library+ command from the file menu and navigate to the folder containing your media files.

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.

AAll of your iTunes purchases can be re-downloaded again. Log into iTunes Store, select the Purchases tab for Apps, Music, etc.
if you've been syncing your old iPod with iTunes, you can restore everything to your new iPod from the old backup.

The backup does not included synced media like apps and music. Those have to be in the iTunes library . Also, you will have to renter keychain items like passwords since they only get restored to the identical device unless you use an encrypted backup

  • HT201269 iTunes is recognizing my iPod as a new iPod even though I have my old stuff restored to it and it says the name of it but still asks to set up as new iPod or restore from a backup.

iTunes is recoznizing my iPod as a new iPod and only gives me the options of set up as new iPod or to restore from a backup. I put my old backup on it and everytime I plug it in it still recognizes it as a new iPod. I've tried restoring it several times and it doesn't help anything and I've also uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it but it didn't help. Please I really need some help I can't download any music with it doing this.

There maybe better ways to do this, but this worked for me when things stopped working a couple of updates back.
Try this; Make sure your stuff is backed up on your computer first. plug the iPod to your computer and do the restore to factory setting. Then set up as if it's a brand new out of the box iPod. (DON"T use your backup copy) Go through all the steps of first time set up. Once complete, add back all your stuff, music, apps, pictures, etc. from your computer. I know it's a pain, but it worked for me.
By the way; the reason I'm doing this total restore is the RED square in the RED circle. All my music downloaded from CDs became unreadable / unplayable today, (worked fine yesterday-- today crap!!) and none of the fixes listed in this forum would work for me. So I started over, after the restore, the RED circles are gone and my music is playing.
    Hope it works, Good Luck!

    WHAT SHOULD I DO

Use the backup of your computer and put the songs back on. If these are iTunes songs you can download them again on your computer and sync the nano.
