ITunes will close but will not quit

Okay. I've tried reading some of the questions and answers regarding similar issues but none seem to speak to mine.
iTunes will "close" when I choose "Quit" or cmd-q, but will not "quit". This seems to only happen when I have recently visited the iTunes store. It does not happen when I am browsing my own library.
Important things to note and summary:
•I do NOT have iWow. Don't even know what it is or where to get it.
•This only happens when accessing iTunes Store. Not sure exactly what causes it to happen but it only happens when accessing the store.
•Doesn't seem to happen (or can't remember it ever happening) when I sync my iPhone AFTER visiting the store. Weird.
•I CAN force quit the application and reopen with no problem. However, this is an issue when shutting down the computer (not plugged in) only to find out right before the battery dies that it NEVER shut down because iTunes never "quit".
Any suggestions?

UPDATE!! Seems to happen EVERYTIME I click on an album or app to read about it. For instance, clicking in an iPhone app to read the description in determining whether or not to buy/download. Clicking on an album/movie to do the same. Either of these workflows (as JUST tested) seem to cause iTunes to not respond.
Again, any suggestions?

Hey DrRuss,
Usually issues installing iTunes on Windows can be resolved after going through these troubleshooting steps. If one step does not resolve your issue, proceed to the next:

  • ITunes will not quit properly in Mac OS X Yosemite - force quit required

I upgraded to to Mac OS X Yosemite last week and have updated all of my other software as the updates became available.  Since the update, iTunes has not always worked properly (e.g., recognizing devices when they are plugged in).  However, the one consistent bug is that iTunes will not quit.  Regardless of how I try to quit the application (menu, dock, computer shut down/restart) it will not quit.  No beach ball appears and in the "force quit" menu it does not show as "not responding".  In fact, I can still continue to use iTunes after trying to quit the application.
The only way to exit the application is by force quitting.  I would prefer to not continue to do this but I have been unable to find a solution.
    Thanks,
    Alan

  • Itunes will not quit or force quit .  light simply stays on?  any suggestions?

itunes will not quit or force quit .  light simply stays on?  any suggestions?

I have a 13 inch MBP. I had to log out. It would not let me restart or shut down unless iTunes was closed. And, iTunes was not responding to the FORCE QUIT option. It would quit, then reappear. Hope this helps.

  • Itunes will not quit

itunes will not just quit, the downloads say they are compete but the little blu icon shows something is still downloading. I have to force quit each time.
I am using the lates version of itunes 11.1 but it would happen with the other verision prior also.
Apple support says the mac is trying to sync with my iphone/ipad but they are not even identified in the menu as being connected.
I have only had the mac about a month and this is my first one.
    Anyone else experience this issue.

Today this happened to me as well. I tried everything I could think of. Force Quit, Terminal.... I also couldn't launch some applications. (I could launch Terminal but not the Activity Monitor. Finally logged out but even that wouldn't force it to shut down. It just sat there with a desktop picture and nothing else. According to Terminal iTunes wasn't even using the CPU. Finally I pulled the plug.
I remember when I wouldn't have to restart for a month. Now it seems like a few times a week. Honestly, iTunes has become a huge bloated POS. I am really starting to hate it and my Mac. Things get even worse when iTunes starts linking up with Apple TV. After a few hours of playing music or photos both Apple TV and iTunes are gasping for breath. I wont go into how nasty Apple TV Take 2 behaves in this thread.
The last time iTunes acted up it was after being linked up with Apple TV for a few hours. At least then I could force quit it. The upgrade to 7.6.1 didn't help. I was thinking it might be my "old" G5 but to read here that his is happening to new iMacs is discouraging.

  • HT201276 iTunes will not quit

Same situation immediately after Restart and full Shut Down.

I have a 13 inch MBP. I had to log out. It would not let me restart or shut down unless iTunes was closed. And, iTunes was not responding to the FORCE QUIT option. It would quit, then reappear. Hope this helps.

I cannot put music on my iphone or shuffle either.  please help

About a year ago my screen broke on my HP laptop so I moved the hard drive into an older computer. I recently moved my hard drive from the old laptop back to the new.  least opened on the older laptop but now it will not open at all.
Doublechecking before proceeding. Are you getting an error message on the new laptop when you try to launch iTunes? If so, what does it say? (Precise text, please.)

  • ITunes will not quit - even "Force Quit"

When I installed the 8.0.1 patch on my iMac, I noticed that iTunes quit working correctly after importing some new tracks. It would not quit. I had to force quit but then it would not open correctly the next time and it would not quit. From that point on, my computer went down hill. When I installed the latest security patch and executed a reboot, the system would not come up. I used my 10.5 DVD and repaired permissions, etc. Nothing worked. I booted off my backup drive and everything works fine.
Tonight I experienced the same issue with iTunes not quitting on my MacBook Pro !
I have been a Mac user since my Mac Plus so I know what I am doing. I also have 15 years experience as a Solaris sys admin.

Do you have SRS iWOW installed?
Before the latest update you could just turn it off, and it wasn't a problem. Now it's a problem whether its on or off.
SRS iWOW starts a process called "genredetection" that checks the status of iTunes, and if it's not running, launches it. I kill genredetection (sometimes there are several instances of it running if iTunes was relaunched) Then iTunes will quit. There is information on SRS iWOWs website. They are aware of the problem.

  • Itunes will not open- "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close"

My iTunes will not open anymore, giving me the error message: "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes several times, and with different versions. Nothing I do seems to work. I have even copied the program files from a friend whose iTunes does work, hoping that would fix it, but to no avail. Has anyone discovered a way to fix this problem. I have a friend who has the same problem, but hasn't been able to fix it either.

What happens when you go into control panel, click on the Quick Tunes config icon, and then select the audio tab? If you get an error, Quick Time is corrupted. Also double check your sound card drivers. Can you play any sound at all? Does Windows Media Player function? What is you anti virus software?

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • TS1362 I have a Mac Pro tower, am running osx and iTunes will not work.. It basically just stopped working after having run faultlessly for...years... I can see all the songs, playlists etc, but the progress bar will not progress..it's 'stuck'. Suggestion

I have a Mac Pro tower am running OSX and iTunes will not work. It has always worked flawlessly. I can see all my iTunes content- my playlists, my songs et cetera, But I cannot play anything. The progress bar is  'stuck'...any suggestions?

Thanks. I have been using iTunes since its inception and have never had a problem...I'm using the latest version. The progress bar is the bar that moves when you're playing a song..it just won't start when I double click on a song,..have tried quitting, rebooting etc but nothing works. Apple are useless-they have told me twice they've tried to call me 'momentarily', but I've been waiting by the phone, and they definitely have not tried to call...

  • TS2972 itunes will not allow me to download a homeshare library - has connected and states it is downloading but then doesn't show the library?

Have connected to homeshare, but Itunes will not let me see the homeshare library from another PC.  It is connected and when I click on ******homeshare library it says it is downloading it - but then doesn't????  Help!

    Hello ariani,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Home Sharing in iTunes.  I recommend the following steps for the issue you described:
    4. Check your network connection
Home Sharing requires a home network with an active Internet connection. All the devices you want to use with Home Sharing need to be connected to your home network.
    In addition, verify that:
All your devices are connected to the same router, if you have multiple routers. Using multiple routers may prevent discovery between these devices.
Your devices are not using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), or that they are all on the same VPN. A VPN may isolate the device and cause connectivity disruptions.
If you have a router set up with a guest network, make sure all devices are either connected to the guest network and devices on the guest network are allowed to communicate with each other, or switch all devices to the primary network on your router.
If your computer is asleep or shutdown, or iTunes is closed, there's no access to the shared iTunes library. Wake up or start the computer and open iTunes to regain access to that library.
Your router needs to be up-to-date. If you are using an AirPort or Time Capsule, read this article to find out more about firmware updates. If you are using a router from another manufacturer, contact the manufacturer to inquire about available updates.
    5. Check Firewall Settings
If you have a firewall enabled in your router or computer, make sure that the firewall is not blocking communication between your computers. Home Sharing uses TCP port 3689 and UDP port 5353 to communicate with shared iTunes libraries. In addition, Apple TV and Mac computers will use port 123 to set the time automatically. Incorrect date and time on either the computer or Apple TV can cause errors for Home Sharing and connections in general. If you are unsure whether your router has a firewall or the required ports open, test additional devices or another network to help isolate the issue. If the devices tested work on another home network, it is your router or network configuration. For Mac OS X, you don't have to edit the port addresses, but make sure the firewall in Apple () menu >System Preferences > Security > Firewall are not set to:
    Block all incoming connections
    Allow only essential services
If you use another security/firewall software on your computer or router, follow this article or contact the manufacturer or check the documentation on how to open TCP ports 123 and 3689 as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353.
    6. Quit and reopen apps and iTunes
If connectivity issues persist, quit and reopen iTunes on your computer. Then, quit and reopen the apps on your iOS device.
    7. Restart your network router
Restart your home network router using the method recommended in documentation from the manufacturer. This may include disconnecting the power cord for thirty seconds or more.
Note: During this period, Internet services such as a VoIP-based phone will not work, and any additional routers may need to be reset in sequence.

  • Just bought a new pc and itunes will not open. I have tried thto repair and reinstall but still no itunes

just bought a new pc and itunes will not open. I have tried thto repair and reinstall but still no itunes

Best route here is to uninstall iTunes completely using the Windows Control Panel.
Make sure you know exactly which version of Win 7 you're running.
Restart your computer from cold (with no iTunes).
Go to Apple website and download the correct version for your operating system.  Install following Apple prompts.
    Once installed, close iTunes.
Restart your computer from cold (with new iTunes).
Start iTunes - all should be operating well!  Good luck ...

  • Whenever I update from Windows 7 get error 1602, iPod shows USB connection to iTunes, but iTunes will not recognize the device. None of the Apple documentation helps.

Whenever I update from Windows 7 get error 1602, iPod shows USB connection to iTunes, but iTunes will not recognize the device. None of the Apple documentation helps. The Apple Mobile Device driver is loaded and operating. The anti-virus software and firewall are not at fault (were uninstalled, and made no difference). The iTunes on my older machine running Vista does recognize the inoperative iPod (iTunes has detetced an iPod in recovery mode) and allows me to restore the device. Can anyone help to resolve this problem on the Windows 7 PC?

So yu tried all of this:
Error 1600, 1601, 1602: Try the following steps to resolve this error:
Ensure proper USB isolation troubleshooting has been performed, and test with a known-good cable.
Follow the steps listed for Error 1604.
This error may be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.
Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for error 1604.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
If you had then time for an appointment at ther Genius Bar of an Apple store.
