ITunes will not back up library

I have a Windows XP machine with latest version of iTunes. I have an IPOD Nano on the system, an IPOD Shuffle, and an iPhone 3GS 16gb on the system. I am trying to install a new hard drive on my desktop. I am currently trying to back everything up.
I go into iTunes and attempt to back up my library onto DVD's per the menu. When I get to the point that it states how many DVD's it will take everything is working great. Once I initiate the back up the top progress bar starts for about 5 seconds then everything stops. When I pull up the task manager it shows iTunes not responding. The other weird thing is that at this point my DVD drive becomes permanently disabled. It will not function and the eject option (Button or Windows command) will not open the tray.
When I reboot the machine the disk works fine. It works fine in NERO or any other application. It seems to be just iTunes that I have a problem. I downloaded iTunes again and re-installed but still have the same problem.
Any suggestions on this problem or another was to back up music and apps so that I can change out these hard drives?
Thanks in Advance.

Yes, if the paths are exactly the same, everything should work.
Here is a good background article on the itunes library vs itunes content that you need to be aware of.

Don't forget to deauthorize your PC in itunes before you swap out the hard drive. I assume you are going to need to reinstall Windows...

Itunes will not add to library some song I bought.  The PC is a new computer.  How do I fix this?

Diesel vdub asked a question which you have answered yourself, although you don't appear to realise it.
He/she (sorry diesel, I don't know) asked: "Is the song actually on the computer?" and you stated that: "I transfered all songs onto the new computer" and "I looked in the folder but the songs just cant be found" so the copy hasn't worked.
You also mention manually copying, as opposed to a previous (presumably different) method.
How are you trying to copy these songs? Do the copy first and make sure that works. If your first method doesn't work, try a diifferent one - such as the manual copy you referred to (copying onto a memory stick, card, disc etc. etc.)
Until you sort out why your method of copying hasn't worked, everything else you "try" is a waste of time.

  • HT4972 It says iTunes will not back up games, apps, etc.  Does that mean they will be lost?  I have iPad 2, and would like to get iOS 6.  Can I do that?  Right now it is iOS 4.  If I can get 6, do I have to go to 5 first?

I would like to upgrade my iPad to iOS 6.  It is currently iOS 4.3.5.  Can I do that?  The article from apple says iTunes will not back up games, apps, etc.  Does that mean I will lose them?  Some of them I paid for and don't want to lose.

Yes you can upgrade from 4.3.3 to 6.0.
Your media - apps, games, music, photos, and so are not included in the backup. Your app data, settings, and many other things are included in the backup. After you update the iPad, you should sync with iTunes in order to put all of that content back into the iPad.  This is what I recommend doing - I do it myself every time I update my iPads, or iPod Touch.
What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.
If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.
    Transfer purchases.

  • ITunes will not load my library into my mac ipod Shuffle

my iMac G4 runs Mac OS 10.2.8; I can successfully create an iTunes library which I want to load into my ipod Shuffle (the simple clip-on model) --- the iTunes 3 will not recognize my Shuffle; I love this computer, it works perfectly, it does everything we need it to do BUT this! How might I best solve this problem?
    thanx,
    Barry

Newer iPods have minimum specifications, to include the OSX version, iTunes version and
configuration limitations required as a minimum for them to work with a computer system.
Have you read about the system level required to use a newer iTunes version?
Could be your iPod is so much newer than the iTunes and OSX installed in your computer,
as to be not compatible; the documentation accompanying your iPod (or the iPod page at
Apple Support) should state the requirements for the product to work correctly.
I'd suspect this compatibility is lacking; so you may need to consider a newer OS X version
(maybe as old as Tiger, if older Panther is too old) upgrade, depending on what the product
information says those requirements are for the iPod you have.
Not sure what the iTunes 7.x application minimum OS X system requirement is, but that is
the other thing; as the older iTunes won't work with the newer iPod and present online store.
Since there probably aren't many new iPods backward compatible to Jaguar 10.2.8, my
first guess is that you'd need to upgrade the operating system and the iTunes, too; so
maybe Tiger 10.4.11 and iTunes 7.4 would be about right. If anyone else has exact specs
they would be welcome in this matter. I know the older clip-on iPod aluminum model Shuffle
could work with Panther 10.3.9, but the latest one probably needs newer stuff than mine.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • ITunes will NOT back up my iPhone 4 on my MacBook Pro???

I am running iTunes (10.5.2) on my MacBook Pro (10.7.2). I keep trying to backup my iPhone (5.0.1), but it will NOT let me???? It begins the syncing, but will not complete it to backup my files??? I just got my Pro a week ago, but I was running the same iTunes software and iPhone software on my PC and it worked fine??? Am I doing something wrong?

I did a complete restore. Spent days reorganizing my phone, made 1 backup and now I get the same error message, "cannot backup iPhone because an error occured" I give up. It's not fixable.. I guess I just have to hope that I never need to restore because all I have is that one backup.
I have tried 3 differnet Macs, three different cables.. same error so it MUST be the iphone 4S. I also have the latest iOS 6.1.3 and iTunes 11.0.2
What is wrong with Apple these days??? What happened to "it just works"??

  • ITunes will not open because library was created by newer version???

I am still using iTunes 9.2.1 and am not ready to go with v10.
I tried to open iTunes and got the message:
The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.
I did notice that the last time I opened it, it looked a little different but went on with a sync of my 1st.gen AppleTV and then closed out.
I have not downloaded and upgraded to the newer version 10.
I have never had higher than 9.2.1 so I couldn't help but wonder if in some way I am being forced to go the newer v10.
    Harold

    I have discovered this:
I could not open iTunes as I previously stated in the normal method.
However, it will open when I created a quicktime movie from iMovies and prepared it for iTunes. When I click on the quicktime movie to play it will open iTunes to play the movie. That is when I see the different icons, etc.
I had something called ‘Ping’ to disable because I care nothing about that.
It does not look the same as I am use to with 9.2.1.
I went to the file menu> about> and low and behold it comes up ITUNES 10.
Remember, I have not downloaded ver.10 at any point so it must have come through a back door somehow.
So, I looked in my applications to see if iTunes app has changed. No, it still shows 9.2.1. I did a search in spotlight for iTunes 10 and nothing shows up. Go figure!
I am not a happy camper at this time and need to hear from Apple about this.
I am not ready to go to v10 and want an explanation.
I am not ready to go with v10 because I wanted to see how it effects my 1st. gen. AppleTV.
I don’t want to loose all the downloads I have on a device that I really like.
The new AppleTV has no hard drive and thus stores nothing as I understand it.
I have many TV programs purchased and stored from the History, Travel and Natl. Geographic, etc. channels.

  • HT1199 Newer version of iTunes will not open.  My music is gone.  How can I get the older version back?

My "newer version" of itunes will not open.  How can I either get it to open or get the older version which worked fine?

Restore the backup before you installed.
If you didn't make a backup, at very minimum make sure your Music library isn't compromised by locating the folder you selected the music to be in (usually in Users -> yourname -> Music) and make sure there are several MB of data there by clicking once on the folder, and selecting Get Info from the File menu in the Finder.
If you can't find it, try to locate parts of track names with Find Any File.
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
then determine which parent file of the .mp3 or .mpa files you have contains all of the music files by getting info under each previous folder in the folder tree.
Once you determine which folder contains all your music, back it up using the Finder, or backup the entire hard drive using cloning software at least to two different drives or two complete copies on DVDs:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
You'll then want to erase and install 10.6 from the system installer you used to put 10.6 on your Mac, and run the combo 10.6.8 updater and apply the necessary security updates:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3261
Then you can install older versions of iTunes for the Mac from here, once you determine which version is compatible with 10.6.8 that you liked before by first checking which version is compatible with what you need:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_version_history
Once you know that, if you can't find it with Google, let us know and maybe one of us can help. Lastly reload your music in your music folder, and your other applications.

  • Itunes will not open and says R6034 an application has made an attempt to load runtime library incorrectly, I tried to load it twice but nothing

Itunes will not open, it says R6034 an application has made an attempt to load C runtime library incorrectly, then it says service apple mobil device failed to start

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • SW upgrade wiped out my iTunes library and also now iTunes will not launch

I just completed the recommended Sw upgrade for iTunes and now iTunes will not launch and my iTunes library is TOTALLY EMPTY.
Clearly, I am NOT A HAPPY CAMPER. I have lost a substantial investment of $$ and time in losing my iTunes library - so Apple should be paying me for my loss.
I need help, can you, will you help me?  I want my iTunes library back and I'd like to reinstall the previous version of iTunes, because it worked fine.
    Barbara Bowen
    Apple, 1983-1993

You don't say which versions so we don't know to which version you wish to revert.  Reverting won't get back your library anyway, if it is truly gone.
Have you checked if your library is truly gone?  Have you looked in the iTunes folder and the media folder inside of it?  The library has two main components, all the media files for the individual tracks and the iTunes Library.itl file which give them the structure you see in iTunes.  Sometimes iTunes just loses track of the library file which can be re-linked, and what's really important anyway are the media files.
If the library is truly gone you can restore it from the backups you make of your computer.  Backups are a responsibility of any computer owner ever since computers were invented.  If you don't have backups then it may be possible to redownload items purchased from the iTunes Store.
I know I have glossed over some of this but it's not worth going into details on how to do all the different things until we know precisely what it is that needs doing.

  • Somehow my itunes started a new library and I lost my old library. Itunes will not allow me to sync new music to my ipod without deleting stored music from ipod. How can I start using this new library and sync the new music without losing existing music.

Somehow my Itunes started a new music library and I lost the old library.  Itunes will not allow me to sync new music from my computer to my Ipod because it is now in a different library. Itunes wants to delete all my Ipod music before sync any new music. How do I work around this. I think this happened during Itunes Upates.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
