Itunes will not force quit and freezes often

I recently moved my itunes folder to an external hard drive. since then it has a had lots of troubles. I resolved some of the issues that were related to itunes 8 (deleted the genius.itdb file to avoid error 13026). However itunes is still regularly freezing when i play songs or add songs to the library. when i attempt to force quit itunes, it will disappear from the force quit menu but the dock still shows it as running, when I reopen the force quit menu it is still listed. i have to restart my computer to get it to quit so i can attempt to reopen it. is this a problem with the hard drive? or do i need to do something else?

Hold the power button down for 7 seconds or more.

  • My iTunes won't force quit and says it's still syncing my iPhone after hours of syncing.

My iTunes won't force quit and says it's still syncing my iPhone after hours of syncing. I had plugged in my iPhone 4S in the morning before I left for school, it synced almost completely, and then it got stuck on "Finishing Sync". I pulled my iPhone out because I had to leave to go to school, and iTunes is still stuck on "Finishing Sync". I tried force quitting and restarting but it's of no use. Now I can't use iTunes at all.

Scratch that, I TRIED to shut down but I guess iTunes overrided it because it still thinks it's syncing

My Mac has been in the shop (Genius Bar) 4 times in the last several months for an array of problems. They've diagnosed and replaced a broken riser and diagnosed (and I replaced) a defective 2nd back-up internal drive. I've also moved my large library of fonts (I'm a designer) to an external drive and now use Font Book to very gradually add only the fonts I'm currently using. Yet there is still the lingering problem that periodically an application will freeze and refuse to force quit. Some other applicatons may still be working fine. I cannot reboot; if I try to restart from the menu bar it disappears and the whole system freezes. So I have to turn it off with the power button, wait a minute and then start up again. This happens several times a day, although I am at times able to work fiveours straight with no problems.
[I've repaired permissions and zapped PRAM countless times.]
I'm now convinced there must be a software problem/conflict. But how the **** do I figure out what that is?
Oh, and of course this is all happening when work is insanely busy. HELP, please.

Try plugging the iPod into a different USB port - does it continue to freeze iTunes?

  • IPod 30GB Problems with iTunes 9; Will not sync iPod and freezes iTunes

Since I have updated to iTunes 9 on windows xp (and more recently iTunes 9.0.1) I have not been able to sync my 5th generation iPod 30gb.
What happens when I connect my ipod is that iTunes will instantly freeze and not allow me to do anything on it, but I am able to open other windows just not iTunes. After about 10 minutes iTunes will unfreeze briefly and claim to be syncing my iPod. Eventually after a further 10 minutes I am greeted with a message saying:
"The ipod 'HARRY'S iPOD" cannot be synced. An unknown error occured (-50)."
    http://tinypic.com/r/2wchbgy/4
Also when I try to access my iPod through the window's explorer, when I try to enter any files I get the message "Please insert a disc into drive F:" followed by "F:\ Photos is not accesible. The parameter is incorrect"
I have no problems synicng my iPod Nano 4th Generation 16gb.
I've tried to revert to iTunes 8 after uninstalling iTunes 9 but when I do it wont let me open it saying it cannot read the file "Itunes Library.lib"
Does anyone have a clue where the problem is? And better still how to fix it?
    Thanks

  • IMac recognizes iPod, but iTunes does not...and freezes.

    Hello.
When I connect my iPod Classic (I have reset it), the icon appears on my iMac, but it does not in iTunes, and iTunes immediately freezes, necessitating a force quit. iTunes is fine without the iPod connected.
I have upgraded iTunes from 9.2 to 10.0, but the problem remains. Can anyone offer help or suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hello Jerry,
Here is the Apple support document related to your issue.

If no luck there, I would try reformatting the iPod via Disk Utility using the instructions in this article.

Other than that though, I don't have too much for suggestions. Best of luck.

  • Aperture will not open. Just an endless spinning beach ball. Will not force quick., Aperture will not open. Just an endless spinning beach ball. Will not force quit

Every attempt to open Aperture results in a spinning beach ball. When attempting to force quit, every program freezes. I am running a MacBook Pro, OS X 10.9.3, 8 GB Ram. Have deleted and reinstalled the program from the App store with the same results. Purchased Aperture a few months ago and began without difficulties. However, recently, the program simply stopped working. Suggestions?

    Try a few of these:
-Hold option while opening. This will ask you to create a new library/choose a different one. Create the new library, see if it opens
->If it opens, it's a library issue. Swap the library back to the original one.
->Try running Library First Aid (cmd + opt while opening)
->Make a backup first, run each of these until it opens.
-If it does not open, test in Safe Mode (shift while booting)
->If it works there, it's user login items or startup items that can be removed from /Library/LaunchAgents, /Library/LaunchDaemons, /Library/StartupItems and ~/Library/LaunchAgents.
->Show no mercy in these folders, but don't trash everything just yet. Move it to a safe location on the desktop where you can easily put these files back. Reboot, test.
->Put some files back from harmless/well-known developers. Reboot, test.
->Rinse and repeat until Aperture doesn't open.
-Test in a new user account
->If it opens here, it's part of your user preferences
->Log back in to your main user
    ->Open ~/Library/Preferences, pull com.Aperture.xxxxxx.plist
    ->Logout, log back in, test.
If it keeps up, contact Apple or try verifying/repairing the disk through Disk Utility.

  • ITunes erased my library(!!?!), I put everything back and iTunes is now saying my iPhone 4 is not synced to my library any more. This also happened with my iPod Touch and now iTunes will not update, resync and put all my music back.

I have never used another computer to sync my phone or ipod too. I do not want to lose everything. I am quite frankly at the end of my rope and thoroughly regret the fact that I am stuck with an iphone 4 for 2 years.
    Someone, anyone...help??!

Sounds like you've taken the wrong course of action after a missing library error. Ideally you would have just restored a backup at the first sign of trouble.
Each iTunes library contains a unique ID that is also recorded in any device that syncs with it. After your rebuild the two IDs won't match so iTunes will try to treat the devices as "new".
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
    Alternatively, for each device...
You should be able to transfer your purchases into a newly authorised library, backup the device, recover any non-store purchased media with the tips in  this post from forum regular Zevoneer, (skip this if you've already got all the media) then restore the device from the backup you just made. That should  preserve all your data and switch the assocation of the device to the new library. I've had positive feedback on this method from other users but I've never had to test it personally.

  • I have a ipod mini, i upgraded my battery, and drive to 32 GB, my itunes will not see it, and the mini only shows file pic error. I have a 10.4.11 powerbook 667 so i can't upgrade to a newer itunes, which is 4.7.1, all i want is a better battery-more song

    Hi,
I have a older ipod mini which needed a battery, so i also upgraded the drive to a 32 GB flash drive. When i did the upgrade, it saw the itunes fine, but it never loaded anything. When i unplug it it shows the folder with "!" icon, and i can't get my itunes to see it. I have a powerbook 667 mhz g4 with itunes 10.4.11, so i can't upgrade to leopard. All i wanted was a better battery and a bit more song volume. This older 4 GB will fit back in and works fine, but i'm upset i spent $37 to only fail. What am i doing wrong? itunes is 4.7.1 How can i over come this?

In Disk Utility, select the iPod (the device) in the sidebar.  So, if you see the iPod in the sidbar with a "volume" indented below the iPod, select the "device" (not the volume).
Go to the Erase tab to the right.  The choice for Format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  Name does not matter, because iTunes will rename it during the Restore.  Click Erase.
    it "flashed" out of itunes.
That may be an issue with the USB connection.  As a test, shut down (power off) the Mac.  Disconnect other USB devices including USB hub, except for standard USB keyboard and mouse (if normally used).  SInce this is a laptop, connect it to its power adapter, so that it's not running on battery power.
Connect the iPod to a direct USB port on the Mac.  Note if there is any difference regarding the iPod not maintaining a connection.

  • ITunes won't force quit and is hanging after update

OK, so I downloaded the new update for my iPhone. While it said preparing to install it took a long time. I figured it was frozen so I did a force quit. Now I'm stuck. I can't get into my iPhone because it is showing a picture of the plug going into iTunes logo.
I can't force quit itunes either. It just doesn't do anything. I tried rebooting and iTunes is still "open" and won't respond.
    Any help would be appreciated

I seemed to have gotten it to finally disappear after rebooting again and again. Though it sent my phone into recovery mode so I'm working on that

  • Initial sync hangs up iTunes until a force quit and restart?

I have an iPod classic. When I first plug it into iTunes, it does an automatic sync that hangs up the iPod and iTunes. I have to force quit iTunes, and restart. Once I restart, everything is fine. Any suggestions?

You might be able to trick iMovie by temporarily moving that project folder out of the following location:
Mac HD > Users > (your home folder) > Movies > iMovie Projects > (look for the name of the project that blew-up)
Drag that project folder to the Desktop for the time being. Launch iMovie and see if it still tries to create the Project Thumbnails. If it gets past any error messages or other house keeping, you can create a new project. Otherwise, quit iMovie. Drag that project folder from the desktop BACK into your iMovie Projects folder. Try launching iMovie again and see if it gets stuck generating the Thumbnails.

  • HT202157 Itunes will not accept id and password?

With the change in software the Apple TV will not accept id or password. On the computer both are acceptable.

Did you create a new Apple ID or did you change the email address that is your Apple ID?
Changing the email address you use for your Apple ID -

    Content and Apple IDs -
Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with one Apple ID with a new Apple ID.

  • ITunes 8 will not launch. Spinning beachball of death. Will not Force Quit.

    Hi.
About two weeks ago, after I upgraded to iTunes 8, iTunes stopped opening. I click the icon, it bounces and I get the window. When I hover my mouse over it, I get the beachball. There is no menuline on the top of the screen. iTunes 8 did work for a while after I got it, but suddenly didn't. I may have updated the OSX version, and that's what made it crash, I do not know. I have uninstalled and reinstalled, installed 7.7.5 and it still doesn't work. I have deleted my libraries and any file associated with iTunes on my mac.
I now can't configure my phone or contacts, transfer files to my iPod Touch for work, and I can't configure a new iPhone I got. This needs to be addressed instantly.
I'm on a January 2008 Mac Pro running Leopard, with all updates installed.
    Please help.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
You have already done a great job of trouble shooting. At this point, I suggest you do an Archive and Install.
Back up your files/music/video/documents etc to an external source. Your iTunes Library is in your Music folder. Open a Finder window, in the Sidebar on the left, click Music/ITunes library.
Here's how to do the Archive and Install: Reinstalling Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 Look down where it says; Install Options
After you do this, do not connect any peripherals like your iPhone or iPod Touch until you download and install iTunes, here's the download link for that: Download iTunes
After you install iTunes, reboot your Mac. Then follow the instructions to use your iPod Touch and see if that functions as it should. If it does, try your iPhone. Make sure you follow the instructions in the manuals.
Lastly, run Disk Utlity and Repair Disk Permissions. Disk Utility is in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD 10.x.x, select the FirstAid tab, then click Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished, Quit DU and reboot.

  • ITunes will not transfer songs and podcasts to iPod

Whenever I try to synch, or manually transfer a song/podcast, I get an error message saying that the is "not enough room". But when I open the device through iTunes, it shows that there are only two songs on it. I tried restoring iTunes and I ran the iPod reset utility (it did nothing). when I look in the manual, it tells me to go to places (ie: the settings tab) which do not show up on my iTunes. How do I get this device to start accepting downloads again?

Try it again... It works! New iTunes version 10.0.1.22.
I have had the same problems, for years it seems. Shuffle Gen2 (I have 2) would tie up iTunes for hours. Restore, utility, reset--nothing would let me update songs on the shuffle (except using a Mac). The swarmy Apple genius workers did not know the answer; they would only say that it works on Macs (which was true, it did work on my Mac notebook BUT my library is on a Windows desktop).
Anyway, I decided to try this again today. Success! Using iTunes 10.0.1.22. I guess they fixed the bug.
