Itunes will not open and quicktime will not update

selecting iTunes results in popup message; 'iTunes requires Quicktime 7.5.5 or later...', but QuickTime will not open.
Control right-click did not help.

Wow, it looks like your software is very very old.
The current version of QuickTime is 10.3.  The current version of OS X is 10.9.1.  (Your profile indicates you are running OS X 10.5.8, Leopard.  Leopard was released in 2007.)
The current version of iTunes, 11.1.4, will not run on Leopard.
Anyway, it sounds as if all your software needs extensive upgrading.  You may be using a computer that is too old to run current software.

  • Safari do not open and ends up not responding

    Hi,
Safari no longer works for me after a software update. Safari will not open and ends up not responding upon launch at which time I have to force quit.
I have gone through the Mac help forums without finding a suitable answer and I tried the following actions but unfortunately not one is working.
    -I have tried to uninstall and install safari again (to uninstall the program I have deleted also all the cookies in preferences and library and application support);
-I have created a new user and safari does not work for the new user either.
It seems to me that the mac feels that a safari window is open but I cannot see it.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

A few things you can try (I see you have tried some of them already):
If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
    ¥ history.plist
    ¥ lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
    3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)
    4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:
Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.
Also look in Library/Input Managers where other third party add-ons may lurk. If you find a SIMBL folder, please note that some SIMBLE.bundles may require updating or possibly removal.
Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.
If Safari is getting very slow:
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x
    This is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

  • Itunes wont open and quicktime will not install. help?

someone please help. my itunes will not open since i preformed an update (it has not been updated for a few years). i have noticed i no longer have quicktime on my laptop but cant re-install. i get to the 'welcome to quicktime 7 installer' screen, press next and windows installer stops working. some one please help.
    i am running windows vista.
    many thanks

    windows installer has stopped working
a problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is avabilable.
    ... and that's one that I wasn't thinking of ...
Head into your Windows Update. Are there any new updates available for you? If so, and you install, does that clear up the error message?

  • Is there any possible way to speak to a person about fixing my firefox browser? It will not open and I do not want to lose the information stored there.

My firefox browser will not open, so I can not try most of the solutions recommended. I do not want to lose stored information such as bookmarks and pass codes so would unstalling and reinstalling cause me to lose that information? I need to speak to a person to help with this, but do not know how to go about it. Should I be contacting Norton or Mozilla?

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode|Firefox Safe Mode]] is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
    * On Windows: Hold the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac: Hold the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run ''firefox -safe-mode'' <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]] article to find the cause.
''To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

  • ITunes will not open because QuickTime will not initialize.

Please help!! I have tried everything from reinstalling to removing both iTunes and Quicktime and downloading them again. When I try to open iTunes (yes it worked before) it says, "QuickTime failed to initialize (error-2096) Quicktime is required to run iTunes. Please reinstall iTunes." I have done all of the troubleshooting Apple has to offer and nothing has worked. I have even done system restore - Thanks for any help someone can give me!!!

I'll post the same thing I posted in another thread; it might help you. Reinstall itunes again according to my post. Some of the information is irrelevant to your problem, but hey, i'm kinda feeling lazy. You'll get the idea. Here it is.....
"this is just a suggestion. If you reinstall itunes again, make sure you follow the directions in the support section of this site for uninstalling itunes and quicktime. Another thing they don't say in that article that I did when i had to uninstall itunes was to do a search. You know, pressing the start button and then "Search". Make sure when you do, click the search "All files and folders". Then set it to look in "Local Hard Drives (C:)" or "My Computer"; i'm not sure which search will pop up your itunes files. Try them both. And then type in the "all or part of the file name" box, itunes. After the search is done you should have a bunch of different itunes components in the results. Btw do the same for quicktime as a search. Make sure to DELETE every itunes and quicktime file there. If some of your music files happened to come up in the search, use commone sense. Get rid of every component so itunes and quicktime is completely erased from the system. Make sure that you do this after you've restarted your computer once (according to the uninstallation article). Then just empty your recycle bin, reboot your computer, and finally reinstall itunes. Hopefully that will work to at least get rid of that APP error. Good luck and ask me anything you have some questions!!"
    Hope that works!

  • How I fixed Finder Crash, dmg's not opening and 2 apps not working?

I have to say a big thank you to this forum because I was having some big problems and was told to do a fresh install which I did but then when I migrated my main account over the problem kept happening.
My Quicktime and itunes would not work and finder would crash and dmg's would not open properly. I typed in Finder crash and found a lot of helpful information for the finder crash part.
First I looked the report for both itunes and Quicktime and found they had the same error:
the QT symbol couldn't be found (Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/QuickTime.framework/Versions/A/QuickTime)
so I trashed my Quicktime (there was probably an easier way but I wasn't sure what that was) and then reinstalled it from apple and once that was done both Quicktime and itunes were working fine (after doing a software update).
Then thanks to iBod who gave this advice when Finder crashes using right click as mine did all the time:
That normally means you have an incompatible menu plugin. Check these 2 locations and move anything present onto your Desktop to disable it:
    /Users/YourUsername/Library/Contextual Menu Items/
    /Library/Contextual Menu Items/
I did this and voila I'm back and running.

Dude...worked like a champ. I uninstalled something small (Tank Cannon Game). Reinstalled. Everything works now, including loopt (which was my initial indicator as well).
    Thanks again.

  • Mail does not open, and is preventing an update

"mail" will not open, but computor says that the "mail" program is preventing a software update.

try a reset, no data loss.  Hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the ipad to boot back up.

    ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT!
    SHELL

Post in the iPhoto forums for whichever version you are using.  You will also need to mention to the helpers there which OS version you are using.
Correct computer info will help to.  You posted in the Intel iMac forums yet your profile confirms you are using a Mac Pro.
Typing in caps is considered shouting in cyber space.  We can all hear you.  It is also very hard to read.

  • Firefox will not open and it will not let me uninstall it because it says that the program is in use; however it will not open. What do I do?

When I click on the shortcut for the program it does not load. When I attempted to fix the problem, everything tells me that firefox is currently open when in fact (as far as I can tell) it is not.

If you use ZoneAlarm Extreme Security then try to disable Virtualization.

  • I recently upgraded my Firefox and it will no longer launch. I clicked to launch after install and it did not open and it does not open when I click in the icon.

    I can't open Firefox.

    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.

  • ITunes won't open because Quicktime was not found!

This is the first time this error came up, when i open iTunes, an error comes up saying "QuickTime Unavaliable" and how i have to uninstall iTunes and install it again... Well i did that a million times and uninstall quicktime and installed quicktime over and over and over and over agaim and this error keeps popping up!!! I NEED HELP!!! This error has no number, it just says i need to uninstall tinues and reinstall it!

If you definitely have a working QuickTime but iTunes thinks that you7 do not, then this points to a particular type of error.
Do you have a computer that has been set up for a work network? You may find that iTunes works OK when the computer is connected to the network but doesn't at home when not connected.
There are other possibilities, but this is a common one.
If I have guessed right, the problem lies in the %path% environment variable. In order to look at its contents, could you do the following:
    Type:
    cmd
into your search box and click cmd under Programs.
The black cmd window will open.
Next copy&paste the following into the cmd window and press return:
    echo %path% >documents\path.txt
This will place the contents of the %path% variable in a text file called Path in (My) Documents.
Could you copy&paste this text file into your next post so I can look at it.
(Use ctrl V to paste into the editor, right click doesn't work.)

  • Itunes won't open and neither will microsoft internet explorer :I

    Hi
My Itunes hasn't been able to open for months, the first time it happened was about the time my Internet explorer stopped working for no reason and my msn messenger won't connect either. Could these be linked I have a had a few I.T. keen people look at it with no solution... I have tried removing and reinstalling Itunes and msn Messenger but nothing has worked. When I click on it, it just won't open... any ideas?

    okay.
some preliminary questions aimed at narrowing in on
    possible culprits.
    (1) do you have Norton Internet Security 2005
    installed on the PC?
    (2) try launching your QuickTime. does it:
    (a) launch perfectly fine?
    (b) fail to launch with an error message? (if so,
    what does it say?)
    (c) exhibit other peculiar behavior? (if so, could
    you describe it for us?)
    (3) reboot the PC. bring up your Task Manager, and
click on the "Processes" tab. now try to launch
    itunes again.
does an "itunes.exe" process appear in the Processes
tab? if so, does it persist in there or does it
    disappear after a few seconds?
hey, i recently been having troubles with opening iTunes
i thought you could help because you suggested something that is causing me trouble (number 1: Norton 2005)
i click to open iTunes.exe but nothing happens. the process appears in the Task manager, but i cannot terminate it. And upon opening, my Norton session manager ends with an error
    can you help me?
