ITunes will not open, no error, no dialog box, nothing

iTunes plain and simply won't open...
I get a little hour glass and then nothing. Other programs work fine. I've tried running the .exe directly, I've repaired, I've reinstalled, still nothing... is it something with the new version or what?!!
Someone help please

... three to four hours later ...
Okay, i'd like to go back and doublecheck the malware angle. The symptoms you're getting are most consistent with the digital signing problem. Since that can be caused by malware, it's plausible that if you've got a live infection, the malware will "rederegister" those dlls.
Let's try supplementing your virus and spyware checks with the Symantec online virus check. (That can sometimes pick up an infection even if the security software on the PC has been compromised.) Apologies in advance, the scan takes an eternity to run:
Symantec Security Check
Does the Symantec check pick up anything? If so, what does it call the things it finds?

  • Itunes will not open and error msg states invalid characters

Itunes will not open nor can I unistall and re download the software. error message states "the Program files contain an invalid character"
All other programs, including quicktime run fine. Please advise.

A bit odd. That's usually an installation error. So if it is going off when you try to launch iTunes, it must be happening when the iTunes Setup Assistant runs (that involves running an installer routine).
What is the drive letter of the drive on which you have the iTunes Program files installed? If it's a high letter (higher than C: ), has the drive letter of that drive changed recently?
(Checking on this because a drive letter change out from under the program files can confuse the registry, and produce similar messages.)

  • Itunes will not open - no error message - flashes user agreement and closes

I just updated Itunes to 10.5.1 I am running MacOs 10.6.8 on a macbook pro.  when I open Itunes it flashes the user agreement and then closes. no error message.  please, for the love of all that is holy, help me

    Dear Julian,
I have had this problem for the past year, I have tried everything except the obvious (and correct) solution:
immediately after you click itunes (from the dock) start rapidly pushing the enter button.  when the licence agreement flashes it already has "okay" highlighted so if you press enter at the right time it will continue opening Itunes - you may have to try it a few times to get it right, but it works.  isnt it wonderful that someone on this forum responded to your inquiry? thanks for posting!

  • Windows XP: iTunes will not open - no error message

    Hi,
I have a fresh install of Windows XP with no other programs installed but Firefox, a graphics driver, and a wireless adapter driver - all on C:. This computer was built for surfing the net and managing an iPod... that's pretty much it. Anyway, I have reinstalled several times both Windows and iTunes and every single time I can install successfully, the event log confirms that it installed successfully, and then when I go to open iTunes, nothing happens. Not even an error message. The hourglass starts and then it disappears and... nothing. Its as if I never opened it. The event log shows this int he application folder:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( iPod Service ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started.
I'm not sure this has anything to do with it because it doesn't indicate an error, just that an event occurred and it has no description for it.
    Please help me... TIA!

After trying sto start iTunes, open the Task manger and look on the processes tab, do you see iTunes.exe running?
If so you have a problem that is commonly due to an issue with cryptographic services.
If you have just done a fresh install, was the smart card service installer, iTunes requires it.
Here are my troubleshooting steps for silent launch failure with iTunes.exe running in the task manager:
Before checking if iTunes works, restart your PC or close the iTunes.exe process with task manager if it is running.
A couple of simple things to try:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1776?viewlocale=en_US
Stop the bonjour service, this FAQ has instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2250?viewlocale=en_US
But usually it is due to a problem with cryptographic services.
Check to see if you have your smart card service and that it is not set to disabled. For some reason iTunes needs it.
    Start>>Run>>Services.msc
you should find the smart card service in the list. Report back with your findings.
Malware can interfere with cryptographic services and also pervert a resolution so it is important to check that your system is clean before proceeding: Run a virus and spyware scan with up to date definitions.
Then work through *Method 4* in the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
You should be able to copy and paste the individual lines to save on typing.
Make a careful note of any error messages you get, they are important for diagnosis. Report back any error messages especially the names of any dlls mentioned.
If there are no errors try starting iTunes.

  • ITunes will not open (no error message and not running Norton 2005)

I have recently upgraded to iTunes 7 and I now cannot get it to open after clicking on the icon. The iTunes.exe process comes up in the task manager briefly then disappears. There is NO accompanying error message and I am NOT running Norton Antivirus 2005. I have already tried reinstalling the standalone version of quicktime and I have used msconfig so that I essentially have only the necessary iTunes/quicktime processes running (no antivirus/antispyware/anti-popup software is running in the background). I have Windows 2000 and I have never had a problem with iTunes until now. Somebody please help me out here.

    wapierce,
It looks like we have covered all the bases here. Unfortunatly it looks like The computer cannot run iTunes or the OS has an issue that may require a reeinstall.
Lets verify the Hardware and OS one more time. Click Start> right click My Computer> Properties(you can also open My Computer then click view system information on the left side of the window.) What does the processor and Memory say here? Also what is it saying aout Windows.
Make sure there are no upadtes available for the computer.
When you installed iTunes did you make any registry changes? It sounds like the next step would be doing a restore or re-install of Windows on the computer.

  • ITunes WIll Not Open - No Error Shown

Earlier today I was using iTunes and it was working fine (as I was browsing through the store) until I wanted to play a song in my library. I played the song, but a few seconds in the song, which I'd played several times before, started skipping. I restarted iTunes and the same thing happened with a different song. Somehow thinking it was the headphones, I unplugged my headphones, restarted the program, and played yet another song, which worked fine. After 30 or so seconds I plugged my headphones back in. A song or two later, iTunes froze. I closed it, but when I tried to open it, it would not start. There was no error message, nothing that showed that I openning the program. Everything else in the hard drive opens and works normally. What's going on??

Had a similar problem with failure to launch the application but got an error message "unable to locate folder". Was able to open the iTunes application by HOLDING SHIFT KEY AND OPENING iTUNES. Was then prompted to select a Folder ("My Music") for library and run the program. This is probably worth a try.

  • ITunes will not open (no error message)

Hello - My iTunes has been acting up recently, it just refuses to open. I tried plugging in my iPod to my computer and seeing if that would make iTunes open but it wont.
I have no clue as to what I should do to fix this, I am also not that smart with computers (only 16 :P)
    Please help me!!

Just wanna say i have the exact same problem, someone directed me to here:
    XP: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1421
    Vista: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717
It didnt help me but it might help you.

  • ITunes will not open, get error message 7(windows error 126) this application has failed to start because d3d9.dll was not found. re-installing the application may fix this problem. well i did and did not fix anything.

this application has failed to start because d3d8thk.dll could not be found. I looked that file up and it seems its part of directx. i installed directx again but that still did not help.

    d3d8thk.dll
That one is a DirectX 8 module and might not be included in the most recent DirectX 9 redistributable available from Microsoft. If it's been installed as part of a partial DirectX 8 install (as part of a game for example), that can cause the issue. Can you track down a full DirectX 8 redistributable? If so, if you install that, does that clear up the iTunes error?

  • My iTunes will NOT open ( no error )

When I go to open my iTunes, the icon changes for a second ( looks like a sheet of paper or something ) and changes back. The hourglass shows up for about a second, and then it quits. iTunes never starts up. Ever. I have tried using the suggestions in the previous thread, but, unfortunately, I was unable to access my Command Prompt due to some errors. IS there any way you can help me out? I really want to use my iPod.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.com
    accck. that's consistent with a WORM_ALCAN.A infection.
download fresh definitions and run vigorous virus and spyware scans. if your security software providers offer them, also try running online scans. (they can sometimes pick up an infection on a PC even if the security software on the PC has been compromised.)
