Itunes will not recognise ipad mini device

I Have installed the latest update for Itunes 11.1.3.8 on windows XP. i connect my new ipad and nothing happens. I have the lastest IOS on my new ipad. I deauthorised all devices as i had 5 thinking this was the problm. I cannot find how to authorise an ipad if it doesn't appear in itunes on the computer.
I cannot load all my movies onto my ipad and thats why i brought it in the first place. i am in strife here. Can anyone help me?

I have been able to get my device recognised on another computer. Interesting. I had to do a complete reinstall of iTunes I.e. Uninstall it then then reinstall it, I may have to try it again on the other computer so I reduce my authorised devices. I have screen lock on and this must be unlocked before I sync it with the computer. Now my problem will be this device authorisation of 5 devices. I have 2mini iPads that I want for different purposes. I have 2 ipads of different sizes I have 2 computers now each one recognises my minis I have a 4gb iPod nano to play music, and an 8gb iPod touch. I will have to think how I am going to use them.
2 computers, nano, iPod touch, 16gb iPad, 32gb iPad, 64gb iPad mini x 2. That's 8 devices. Of. Course my wife and I share them. We read the books and watch the movies we don't want too have to pay twice to buy the same book or movie, but I think we will need 2 accounts. I hope home sharing will work because that the only solution I can think of.

Did you just recently update iTunes? And are you using windows?
If so, try going into the control panel, add/remove programs, uninstall iTunes, apple mobile device support and apple application support. Then download and reinstall iTunes and see if that works.
If you're using a mac then it may be something else.

Why is 50GB of music gone? All music should exist on the computer. Only a fool would rely on a single device which could easily be lost or stolen to store their content on.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (Later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or by right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

There is no 5 device limit. There is a 5 computer limit.

only a few hours old, had an older version of itunes and the ipad showed up in that, updated itunes in order to update the ipad and now it just wont connect to itunes, absolutely typical if u ask me, i was expecting some sort of a problem with apple and i got it....

have you tried charging the device ?
if so and it still does not work you can try a Forced Recovery..
by holding the HOME button down and plugging it into your computer at the same time..

I'm not aware of a way to reset the password for an encrypted backup. If you have forgotten the password for an encrypted backup, your only alternative is to put the phone in recovery mode and restore it as a new device. Your data will be lost.

I think what you are saying is that itunes doesn't even recognize that your iphone is plugged in - so you can't start the recovery process? I DO know that in the hours of me muddling through the internet - googling this issue - that I did see other posts of those who plugged into itunes, and it didn't recognize their iphone, but they DID have suggestions on how to deal with the problem... while I don't have "the" solution, I wanted you to know I did see an answer out there - just skimmed past it as I was searching for mine... sorry I don't remember good luck!

The diagnosits can see the drive under 'Optical drive detected' and passes all the tests but it does not show up under 'Devices' (on the left hand panel). I've tried repair under Control Pane/Uninstall a program (twice) removed and re-installed iTunes. I don't believe the problem lies with my drive OR Windows as the drive is visable in all my other programs (Windows Media Player, Windows Explorer, RealPlayer + all my other software that can access a drive.

I have recently encoutnered a problem with my 5th generation 60gb ipod which I'm hoping someone can help me with?
When I plug my ipod into my computer and open itunes, it recognises that the ipod is plugged in, but asks me to set-up the ipod, like it is the first time I have used this ipod. Also it does not recognise any of the 5,000 or so songs on the ipod.
When my ipod is not plugged into my computer all 5,000 songs still appear on it and play with no problems.
For some reason itunes will not recognise the songs on my ipod - even though I have added them all with this software and about a third of them on this computer.
If I choose to proceed with the set-up of my ipod, I am afriad I will lose all 5,000 songs off my ipod.
Can anyone offer a suggestion - as it is, I either wipe my ipod or concede that I can't add any more songs to it, even though it is only half full.
Oh yeah, I have added all files to my ipod manually.

With those symptoms, it's probably worth checking to see if you're getting a Windows drive letter confusion. For troubleshooting advice on that, see the following document:
