ITunes will not start the install

I have bought a new Acer Aspire laptop and want to install iTunes. I can download the app ok but when I run it it opens the Windows Installer screen then just sits there with the message "Preparing to install". I have tried with iTunes 8.2 and 9 and it's the same. I have also ensured I have administrator rights in program files and ran the setup as the administrator. Any help appreciated

I had the same problem. Normally, this setup file extracts 8 msi file in your temp. directory. (like C:\DOCUME~1\Rony\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP247.TMP\)
In this directory you will find 8 different msi files. Doubleclick the file iTunes.msi.
This will start the installation of iTunes. It also will start itself the other msi files. (like QuickTime and so on.)
I my case, this worked perfectly.
You can also look the dir. "C:\Documents and Settings\[your user]\Local Settings\Temp" for a log file like iTunesSetup10E8.log. The filename depends on "something" but you should find it. Open it with notepad and you'll see the log of the installation.
In my case the last line that was logged was: Executing: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe" /i "C:\DOCUME~1\Rony\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP802.TMP\iTunes.msi"
Meaning the Windows Installer should execute the iTunes.msi. (but it did not and slowed down the performance of my computer.)
If this is the case, you can use the solution I described above.

Disabling DEP for itunes.. re-enabling doesn't make any difference either way.  Tried different profile.

  • ITunes will not start after installing newest version

After installing the newest version of iTunes, I click on the iTunes icon and the license agreement flashes on the screen and disappears before I can click on the agreement. I am running Windows 2000 professional edition. Quick time will also not start. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, with and without firewall software running. Nothing seems to help.

    hi Rachel!
No error messages, nothing. The hourglass is next to the mouse for about 3 seconds.
okay, if it's not NIS 2005 related, let's first check up on this:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302386
... but by the sound of it, you might need to check on this:

if it turns out to be a weird start-up item to blame, would you mind letting us know what it's called? (there's a hint that there's a new kind of malware out there causing "the flash" and possibly some other start-up problems.)
    keep us posted.

  • I have a new laptop and want to instal photoshop elemets2.0.It will not start to instal. Why?

I have a new latop, and want to instal an old version of Photoshop elements 2.0 that I have. It will not start the instal process. Why?

It is probably because the software is too old to install/use on your new machine.  Look at the files on the disk and see if there are any there that you might try to use to initiate installation.

    Hello, Jdragone.
Thanks for the question.  Start with completely uninstalling iTunes and all of it's components in the order specified in the article below.  Once this is done, download and install iTunes.

If you receive any errors when uninstalling any components of iTunes, try the steps in the article below for each component that gives you an error.

Same problem today. Took five times to reinstall without any error messages. Apple has posted a way to fix and you should follow their's first. I finally got to upldate correctly by doing their fix but with one difference. I did the following:
    1) Went to the C:\program files (x86)\iTunes and C:\program files\iTunes folders and moved every file ending in .dll to the desktop (even if two files in same location had the same name, just replace)
    2) Restarted computer and still got error message
    3) Uninstalled all apple programs possible in the following order......itunes, apples software update, apple mobile device support, bonjour, and apple application support.....all performed using the microsoft control panel
    4) put all the .dll files on the desktop in the trash and emptied (this is a step apple support did not specifically put in their fix but for a final try I wanted to delete everything apple).
    5) Restarted computer.
    6) Re-installed itunes from apple website
No error messages during re-install and was able to open shortcut in one try. Even updated my ipad to make sure everything was working.

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • TS1717 itunes will not start automatically when the phone is plugged in

My iTunes will not start on my pc when I plug the phone in and the box to check is greyed out

    iTunes=10.6.1.7
    Windows 7 OS
    iphone 4S=5.1.1
When I plug the device in it is recognized by the PC, and if I start iTunes is finds it and I can do all functions.
It seems to me that I used to be able to auto-start iTunes when I first installed it, but now I am not sure if this problem is because I changed phones from a 3g to the 4s....
I don't know enough about it to try anything......................

This solved everything, after uninstalling IObit Advanced SystemCare iTunes would open with Bonjour enabled however iTunes wouldn't pick up the iPhone device. I did some more digging and a few of their other applications had been installed including Game Booster. Uninstalling that put everything back to normal.
I have been given a new device by Apple who were really helpful and the guys have neever seen the docking connector disabling before. Coinsidence?
Anyway in case this helps other people these were the symptoms (might help with searches):
    - Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
    - iTunes 10 wouldn't open originally, just egg timer then nothing yet processes all started
    - Docking connector died on the device, wouldn't even trigger a standard USB connection or light up the device
    - Uninstalling iTunes etc didn't change anything
    - Disabling Bonjour worked but iTunes extremely unstable, seems frozen when syncing and the sync itself, especially with app transfer, was extremely slow and the other buttons were unresponsive after clicking for two minutes before screen would change
Have sent feedback to IObit about this to see if there isn't something that can be done.
Fantastic assistance and an incredible spot from b noir. If you come to the UK you need to drop me an email as I owe you a night out on the town!

  • My itunes will not start in Win XP. I get an error that says MSVCR80.dll can't be found. I am scared if I just reinstall iTunes that I will lose all my music and apps that are in the old itunes. What can I do.

My iTunes will not start in Win XP. I am getting an error that says MSVCR80.dll can't be found. I am concerned that if I just do a reinstall
of  iTunes it will overwrite or delete all the music and apps I have on the current app that won't start. When I boot the PC I get the following:
APSDaemon.exe - unable to locate. MSVCR80.dll not found. Reinstalling application may fix this problem. How can I get iTunes started without losing
all my music and apps? Thanks

It won't unless a problem occurs. Back them up, uninstall iTunes and all related components, and reinstall them.

  • HT1751 i bought a new, larger external hard drive. copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive. iTunes will not start or run unless old hard drive plugged in.??

I bought a new, larger external hard drive. I have my iTunes library on the external drive instead of C: drive, Using Windows 7.
I copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive.
iTunes will not start or run unless the old hard drive is plugged in.
If I disconnect the old drive iTunes shuts down.
    Any ideas. ??

    Hello kskip,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive.  You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.
You can find the full article here:

  • ITunes will not start up... Keeps giving Windows Error Message.... help!!

My Itunes will not start at all... When I try to start it I get a Windows Error Message saying below:
*iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.*
*In the Error Window The following is there...*
    _AppName: itunes.exe AppVer: 8.0.1.11 ModName: quicktime.qts_
    _ModVer: 7.55.90.70 Offset: 00990007_
Can Anyone help me as I can’t use my ITUNEs and am Handicapped when it comes transferring ITEM on and OFF my IPHONE...
    Thanks

That error suggests you may have a QUicktime problem rather than an iTunes problem.
Have you installed any of the following:
ACE & K-Lite mega codecs package, QT alternative, Storm codec, WinAVI video converter, Mpcstar, (possibly starcodec pack, 3ivx)
If so uninstall them. They are bad news for Quicktime.
Then download the version of Quickime without iTunes:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Now Remove Quicktime using the method for Quicktime in this article (just Quicktime):
    XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925
    Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
When you come to your C:\Windows\system32\ folder you can delete any file or folder with Quicktime in the name.
    Restart you computer
Install the stand alone Quicktime and check if it starts.
If it does you are in a position to find out if iTunes is OK.
