ITunes will not start up, FAQ did not work

Hi, I have a problem with starting up iTunes. I first double clicked on the icon on my desktop and then it comes out with an error message, "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." When I click on the error report it says, "AppName: itunes.exe AppVer: 7.3.2.6 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 10001040"
I have no idea what it means but I tried restarting my computer which didn't work; as well as reinstalling, which also didn't work. Then I went here and found the troubleshooting start up instructions. I opened up Quicktime on the Control Panel, clicked "Audio" and a red error message came up saying, "Buffer overrun detected!" Programme: C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe, A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programme's internal state. The programme cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated."
I have no idea what it means but I sense that something isn't right. Can someone please help me?

Yes, the storm codec is known to cause buffer overrun problems with Quicktime.
You need to remove the storm codec.
Then download the stand alone version of Quicktime (The one without iTunes):

Then remove Quicktime using the method here (just Quicktime not the other programs):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93698
Restart your computer and install the stand alone Quicktime.
If either the uninstall or install of Quicktime fails we will need to do some further cleanup so let me know how you get on.

    Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

    Thanks. I have been using iTunes since its inception and have never had a problem...I'm using the latest version. The progress bar is the bar that moves when you're playing a song..it just won't start when I double click on a song,..have tried quitting, rebooting etc but nothing works. Apple are useless-they have told me twice they've tried to call me 'momentarily', but I've been waiting by the phone, and they definitely have not tried to call...

    Dude you have a jailbroken phone as stated in your first post, no need to do a second post.
    As per the forum term of service you can't get help here.  Use google.

    When uninstalling iTunes on your windows computer, there is a specific way it must be done in order to completely uninstall all components of the software.  Ensure you follow the article for your correct OS.

    I get the itunes has encounterd a problem and needs to close, sorry for the inconvenience error, no specific error number. I do not have QT installed,
    not having QT installed is what will be causing your itunes error message at the moment. let's try a careful standalone QT 7.1 install.
    download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer
    if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
    (if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

    You may need to put the iPod into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 - you should then be able to reset the iPod and re-sync its content.

  • ITunes will not work on Fresh INstall of Vista x64 SP1

    I have a strange issue. I have a Windows Vista x64 with SP1 (Yes the DVD is a production DVD from Microsoft not a slip stream copy.) and I wanted to do a fresh install of Vista with SP1. Reinstalled OS and everything is running great but iTunes. When I start iTunes I get this error message about "mssip32.dll" being damaged or corrupt please reinstall the app. So I looked around good old Google and apple.com. I found several fixes about re-registering a set of dll files. So did them all, no change. Reinstalled Vista from scratch again, no change. So for the heck of it I reinstalled Vista with no SP1 installed and then applied SP1 and it works fine. I reinstalled Vista with SP1 and have been running it for over a week and everything on the system is tested and solid as a rock with no issues. The only program that will not work is iTunes. I have also tried all the way back to version 7.4 and no luck.
    Any ideas on this?

    I would be worried about that - but it may turn out to be nothing.
    Since you already changed your password, you're probably OK - but I recommend looking at your purchase history to see if there's any unauthorized purchases (use iTunes on your Mac or PC to go to the itunes store, then click your account in the upper-left or upper-right corner). If there are any new purchases that you didn't make, click the button to report problem (and if they happened after you reset your password, you should immediately change your password again).
    I think sometimes when you change your password and verifiy your credit card info, it can "reset" the warnings - so it may actually have been you logging in to your own account that caused you to get the warning. But I'm not absolutely sure of that, so it's best to check your purchase history (and reset your password if necessary - but you already did that).
    I also recommend turning on "two-step verification" (but Apple makes you wait a few days after changing your password to turn that on). With "two-step verification", Apple will send you a text message with a 4-digit code the 1st time you try to buy something from a new computer - since a hacker won't have your phone, they won't be able to continue (theoretically). After the 1st time, it goes back to mostly working normally (until the 1st time you  try to purchase from another new computer, then you get another text message - so this alerts you to someone, somewhere else, trying to get into your account).

I just updated my Quicktime software to 7.5, I also updated my iTunes to 8.2.1 (I think, it is definitely higher than 8.0). When I would open up iTunes. I would get this message. I had no trouble about 3-4 weeks ago. I was able to get into the iTunes store and download song. I am pretty annoyed to say the least. Apple makes it so difficult to get information, unless you do endless searches. Trying to contact customer service is a whole other nightmare. They offer this software for free, yet they want you to pay for everything. As you can imagine, I am not happy and venting is helping. So I am hoping there are some other people out there with similar problems who can help. Nothing has been changed or altered on my computer. I have no problem connecting to the internet. No passwords or ID's have been changed. As mentioned I updated my software to the highest, most current software available that my operating system can handle.     Updated message 12/9/10 - I updated my iTunes version to 9.2.1. Now my iTunes will not open. When I do try to open it, It says that this program will only work with G4, and G5 processors.     OK - to answer my own question, Apple recommend 8.2.1, but you can install 9.1.1 and it will run on a G3. Very slowly. Looks like this is the only option. Get it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1036. You need OSX 10.4.11 or later though....
