ITunes window display corrupt and unreadable

I downloaded and installed iTunes onto my son's laptop running Vista Home Basic. When I try to run iTunes, however, the window is corrupt. You can click on the commands on the top row, but the display is otherwise unreadable.
Can anybody help please?

AH, black iTunes.

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 'C:/Windows is corrupt and unreadable'?

    Hi,
Most of my family and i are and have been Mac/Apple enthusiasts for a while, but recently i have been using Windows 7 via bootcamp for certain software and such. Windows was working fine until today, when i started my MacBook Pro 13" computer (Mid 2010) and did the usual thing to get into windows (Hold Alt/Option key while starting and running windows from there) the normal startup screen was not displayed, but there was simply a 'loaidng files' bar at the bottom. after the bar had finished loading, it went straight to disk repair. As soon as the disk repair came up, a message box saying something along the lines of '...C:/Windows is corrupt and unreadable.' (there was something before C:/, but i cannot remember exactly what was said). At this point, i could do absolutely nothing but close the message for it to come up again (note that the disk repair was still going on behing this message. (this same thing happens every time i start Windows via bootcamp)
After a while of searching, i found nothing that i thought would help me with the exception of running the Windows 7 Disc and running a system repair. I selected the version to run, then selected the option that runs with the settings of the last time it ran correctly. All seemed fine untill i got to the screen where it ask wether to install (repair and help buttons in the bottom left corner), at which point i clicked on the repair option. A screen saying it was looking for Windows intallations came and went and the repair screen came up and the same message '...C:/Windows is corrupt and unreadable' was displayed.
Please help, i can probably fully reinstall Windows 7 via bootcamp and keep all of the documents/files i had, but that would mean i would have to get and reinstall ALL of the programs i had on there, and that would take me almost two full days of fidling around with discs and downloads, let alone the internet usage that would use for the digital versions i bought.
is there a way around this reinstall? Please help.
    Thank you in advance,
    Rylando

Unless you have a backup already you will not be able to save anything, not data files or applications. Of course you will also need to restore the Mac hard drive to as it was prior to the Boot Camp (Windows) partition being created, this must be done with Boot Camp, not Disk Utility. Then reinstall Windows and all applications.
All files currently in the Windows partition will be erased.

  • Cannot import CDs into iTunes, disc is corrupted and unreadable error.

Cannot import CDs into iTunes, keep getting disc is corrupted and unreadable error. Advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the reply!
I downloaded the program and ran it, got to the point where it says I have errors that need to be fixed... but it appears I have to pay for the rest of the program to actually repair these errors. Is this incorrect?
If I do have to pay, then I'd like to look for an alternative... the program is $40; of course, that's cheaper than buying a new iPod, but I want to avoid that too.

My windows got corrupt and i lost my itunes with it,now i need to save all my apps and music on my ipad.......please help me i dont have back up of apps or music can i save it.....

    Hey there Shomail,
It sounds like you are wanting to copy your content from your iPad to your computer. You can trasnfer your iTunes purchases from the device to the computer with the following article:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
To transfer iTunes Store purchases from your device to a computer, follow these steps:
Connect your device to the computer. If it is synced with another iTunes library, the following dialog may appear:
    Click the Transfer Purchases button.
Important: Clicking Erase and Sync will delete any existing content currently on your device. The content will be replaced with whatever existing content is in the current iTunes library your device is connected to. If there is no content in the iTunes library, nothing will be synced to your device, and your device will be empty.
Please note that this feature works only for items that were purchased on the iTunes Store. Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your device to the iTunes library. Please see this article for more details.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Can't import to iTunes  "file or directory corrupted and unreadable"

When I try to import music to iTunes from a CD this error message shows "Error occurred while converting the file "xxx". The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." The CD plays fine in iTunes.
I get a similar message when I try to import MP3's downloaded off email onto my desktop "Attempting to copy to the disk 'New Volume' failed. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." The MP3's play fine through MediaPlayer.
I have removed iTunes and re-installed. Any advice?
    Thank you

Have you tried running a disk check?
Go to My computer, right click on your c:drive and select Properties>>tools>>error checking.
The check starts next time you reboot your PC and can take a while.
The other thing you could try is to set up a new account and see if the problem occurs there.

Let's try a repair install of iTunes first.
Restart the PC. If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair". If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", click "Change" and then click "Repair".
Can you launch your iTunes now?

  • Ipod cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

I have recently had to reload windows xp home edition on my computer and wanted to connect my ipod to load some new music. As it was a new installation the ipod was not recognised. I loaded to latest version of itunes that I have just downloaded and was asked whether I wanted to sync my ipod with this computer in which case I would lose everything that was on the ipod. I choose yes to sync to the new computer but got the error message "the ipod "ipod" cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". I simply recharged the ipod and continued to use it for a day but then it just ran through the tracks without playing anything until it came to the end of an album and returned to the main menu.
As I cannot play anything I wanted to restore and reload but cant. Could anyone offer any help ? Thanks

I have just managed to connect my ipod through itunes to restore it. However when I tried to connect it to the wall socket to complete the update nothing happens. I have checked the fuse in the plug and that is okay, but the ipod does nothing, not even a light on the display when connected. It seems to have locked up. If I hold it close to my ear I can hear a gentle hum. Also the ipod is not showing up in windows explorer.
    Any suggestions ?
    Thanks

  • Ipod cannot be synced. File or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

After I tried reconnecting my ipod to my computer, the message "The iPod cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." popped up in iTunes and it wouldn't let me access any of the songs on my ipod. I ejected it and checked the ipod, and all of my songs were still on there, but whenever I try and connect it to iTunes the same message pops up and when I go to the music list, nothing is there, though it states 3 GBs of space is being taken up (the amount of space my songs use).
I figured the problem might lay in iTunes and not my iPod, but while there was a problem and I did manage to fix it, the newly downloaded iTunes still gave me the same message as before.
I figure I could try reformatting the iPod, since it looks like that might solve the problem, but I don't have any of the songs on my iPod backed up, so I was hoping someone might be able to offer another solution. =/
*To sum things up: songs are still on my iPod and I can listen to them after ejecting, but syncing up to iTunes is no longer possible (so no new music ;_; ). Problem most likely isn't with iTunes and I'd prefer not to reformat the iPod.*

  • Corrupted and Unreadable Ipod

    Hi there all,
I just connected my 20G Ipod W/clickwheel to my laptop and I received this popup:
The Ipod (insert name) cannot be updated. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.
Can anyone please give me a suggestion as to what I shold do?
    Thanks everyone.

    hmmmmmm.
it might be possible to get it back working again by running a chkdsk over it:

... but the restore is really the better option with that message. see:

  • File or directory \ipod_control\itunes\itunesprefs is corrupt or unreadable

Every time I connect my ipod (30g video) to my computer it pops up the "ipod setup assistant". Then I get a message on the bottom right of my computer screen that says "file or directory \ipod_control\itunes\itunesprefs is corrupt or unreadable, please run chkdsk. I ran chkdsk and it didn't help. I'm sure this is an easy problem, but I am clueless. Can anyone help?

    Greetings,
What you want to do here is to Restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater.
    Restoring: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
    iPod Updater: http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
We have been discussing the chkdsk issue since Nov 2004, when it was introduced by some particularly buggy iPod firmware.
For more info visit our thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=179452
and the Apple KB article on the issue: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300554
Feel free to post back should you require further assistance. There is a whole stack of information on the chkdsk issue, but I won't seek to bore you with it here...
I add a note of caution - in that chkdsk issues usually affect Gen4+ iPods, and you have a Gen5. If the Restore does not solve your problems, let us know. I have been consulting on some cases where a hardware fault was to blame, and the user had to get their Pod changed out...
    Kind regards,
    Gopha

  • "This ipod cannot be updated. The files are corrupted and unreadable"

This message now appears when I connect my ipod to itunes....
"This ipod cannot be updated. The files are corrupted and unreadable"
The ipod still works and charges, but it will no longer let me add new files to it. The contents of my ipod are still displayed as usual on itunes, so it obviously is reading it to some degree. It advises me to run a chkdsk utility, but I have no idea how to do this.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?
    Many thanks

If your iPod is corrupt then you have no choice but to restore it.
Before you do that, you may have some success getting the music off it and onto your hard drive again.
    Check out the instructions/suggestions here.

  • \iPod_Control\Device\SysInfo is corrupt and unreadable.

Everytime I connect my U2 ipod to my computer I keep getting updates everyday for my ipod (I have the 3.1 version) and itunes (5.0.1) AND I keep getting this "exclamation point" error message: The file or directory \iPod_Control\Device\SysInfo is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chksk utility. I can't find chksk utility...I found chsks.exe...it ran all tests and it's fine.
    What's going on here?

    Manon,
I really need someone's expertise on this
In that case Da Gopha's your go-to guy.
Have a look at this thread:
Da Gopha, "chkdsk errors are fixed by iPod Updater 2005-06-26", 10:01am Jul 20, 2005 CDT
You might want to post any follow-up questions there.
Also, most people have reported that version 3.1 firmware solves the problem so you should confirm that that's what you have on your iPod.
    Good Luck!
P.S. Also note that this is the
    i iTunes for Mac
forum, not the best place to post a problem concerning a Windows computer. Something to keep in mind for the future.
