ITunes wiped clean on computer and iPod how do I get my music back?

I just did the iOS 5.1 system update for the ipod. It told me it will restore my ipod and I was okay with that. But when it was finished I went to my iTunes on my computer (iMac) and there is absolutly no music. There are no music files on my computer either. I extreamly need to get back that music that was stored on my iTunes. Those songs can't be gotten back. I rarely buy from iTunes and those songs were transfered on here from a computer that I don't have anymore. Some of these songs were even of my dead family playing and instrament and I have no copies! Please help me get my music back I am completly heart broken.

You may be able to redownload iTunes ourchased music by the following. It depends upont the country you are in:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
You will have to get the other music by the same method you got them the first time. If they are not on the iPod or computer, they are gone. Sorry.

Media should be included with the backup of the computer that all users should be creating on a regular basis as part of basic computer/data maintenance.
In the event that you do not have a backup (stop being lazy.... keep backups of YOUR data and other important files)
If you are in the US and running iTunes 10.3 or later, it is possible to redownload music via iCloud from purchased history.
If you are not in the US or for some reason cannot run iTunes 10.3 or later, contact iTunes customer support and ask very nicely for the opportunity to redownload the content. They are not required to provide this opportunity.
It is also possible to transfer content from an iDevice that was purchased via iTunes. On the new computer, sign into the iTunes account, authorize the computer, connect the device then select File > Transfer Purchases.
The simplest method of all is to transfer or copy the media (and other important files) from the old computer or the backup of the old computer. Typing "move itunes library" into the search bar here or into google will reveal step by step instructions on how to do this.

Recently my hard drive died. I had not backed up all my purchased iTunes songs because I thought (with the proper 3rd party software) that the iPod would serve as a backup. Well, my iPod died around the same time my computer died.
iTunes knows what I've purchased; I logged into my girlfriend's iTunes and tried to purchase an album again, and it said I'd already purchased it (which I had on my dead computer before it died.) Since iTunes knows which songs I've bought, and since my computer and iPod died, will they let me redownload them without recharging me? They clearly have the song purchases on record. Any hope?

The policy on lost songs is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you may be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download however they are not under any obligation to do so.

Have new PC now. Saved all folders from old PC HDD. Will install iTunes 7.6 on new PC but how should I get my music back from the old PC's HDD? Yes, just delete the duplicates but make sure to keep at least one copy!
Actually it might be easiest to start over - totally clear your library, and make sure this copy setting is turned off

I have read the the advice you gave, and I had already tried that. It did not help.
When I tried to download an album with nine songs, (I have paid for the complete album), two songs were missing. One of them has showed up/disappeared a couple of times, but with a cloud/arrow-symbol next to it, what I thought to be a symbol for downloading from the cloud. When I click it, it starts a downloading process, and then I am told it cannot be done, "please try again later". The other song is nowhere to be seen. The song with the cloud/arrow-symbol, I bought 3 times, once with the album, twice just the song. That didn't change matters. iTunes tells me I have downoladed all songs I have purchased.
I do not really understand why you do not understand what I am writing, I only describe what happens when I use iTunes.
If a person want to use iCloud, one needs an iPhone, iPad or an iPod Touch. That information is not given until you have downloaded and installed the iCloud program. That is why I have it on my computer, but cannot use it. To set up an iClod account, you have to connect one of the above mentioned devices. I don't have one, so I cannot do it.
If you want the (13013) problem explained, I suggest you google it. I am not the only one to have that problem.
I am thankful that you spend time on trying to help me, but I cannot explain things clearer than this.

If the songs are not on an iPod or a computer (didn't you have a backup of your computer files?) you are probably out of luck since you only get one download of music from the iTunes store and it is up to you to back them up. If you bought this music from iTunes you can download it again from within your Purchases in the iTunes App.
Otherwise, razmee is right. you can only sync to one itunes library. If you sync to another one whatever does not exist on the new library will get removed from the phone.
That's is by design to avoid Piracy. As otherwise you could simply transfer purchases to other users.

Unless you subscribe to iTunes Match , Apple does not keep a backup of your iTunes library. Even then it is not the library as it exists on your computer, but some version of the media, and only media files, not playlists. Even then not all media are definitely available since anything removed from the iTunes Store since you purchased it is not available for re-download.

It does not magically appear in a new place. It will only be where you put it.
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
