Itunes won't automatically update

Just recently my computer deleted all my itunes songs, so I bought the program iTunes Jack to take all the songs from my ipod and put them back on itunes. Now when I plug in my ipod it tells me my ipod is synced with another library. when I ask it to sync with itunes, it only adds on photos and not songs. how do I get it to automatically update itself like it used to before my songs got deleted? thank you

When you look at the iPod summary page in iTunes, is "Manually manage music and videos" checked? If yes, uncheck it and try again.
If that's not the issue and you're sure that you have copied everything off of the iPod, I would restore the iPod. Please understand that this will delete everything off of the iPod and restore it to it's factory defaults.

    Hey kaylactm,
Thanks for the question. I understand how frustrating this may be. To resolve your issue, it may be necessary to restore your device in recovery-mode:

  • Itunes tries to automatically update my ipod

Since I updated to itunes 7, I have been having a very hard time. Every time I plug in my ipod, which is filled with music from various CDs that have been uploaded to various computers but not my new one, CDs from the Music Library at school, and even recordings from my first recital, itunes tries to automatically update it! The settings on my ipod are set to manually update, so I don't know why this is happening. The worst thing is, the SECOND I plug it in, itunes starts saying at the top that it's updating my ipod's library. It doesn't give me a chance to change the preferences on this new version of itunes or anything!!!! So every time I plug it in, I see the message, I see the little bar getting closer to erasing everything from my ipod, and I flip out and pull it out of my computer. Which can't be good for it. There HAS to be a way to fix this. I can't believe that apple would actually design something so fundamentally stupid and flawed as this. Even if you know of a website where I can download an old version of itunes that doesn't do this, something, anything! Please help. I'm desperate.

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. You should then be able to check your settings in case they have defaulted back to automatic from manual: iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX

  • ITunes won't install update after downloading Yosemite

I downloaded Yosemite today and now my iTunes won't open because apparently the version I had doesn't work with Yosemite.  After I clicked "Install" for iTunes in the App Store (so I could get the latest version) it stays "paused" in the download process and won't resume the download.

    Hi, kdub5.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that you can not update iTunes due to a .msi error.  I would recommend uninstalling iTunes and all of it's components as outlined in the first article below.  For any component that gives you the .msi error, go through the steps in the second article below.
Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" alert appears when you remove Apple software in Windows

  • ITunes won't automatically start anymore

Currently, I have to manually launch iTunes to get it to sync with my iPods. I verified the 'Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically' was NOT checked in iTunes - Preferences - Devices, so I think the control is set correctly.
I have a 2nd gen iPod Touch, a 4th gen iPod Touch, and a 2 year old MacBook Pro. When I connected one of the iPods via USB to the MBP, iTunes used to automatically launch and do the sync.
Last week, I had the Optical drive on the MBP replaced at the Genius Bar in a local Apple store. The tech said he had to also reinstall iTunes because it wasn't launching iTunes when an audio CD was inserted. I noticed I had to adjust a few settings (Rip options, etc.) but everything has been working well except syncing.
Does anyone know the name and location of the preferences file that stores these settings? I suspect if I can find the file I can make the appropriate changes.

You're right, the problem was with the iTunesHelper. The app was OK, there just was a flag of some sort set differently than the U/I was indicating.
I toggled off the 'Open iTunes when this iPod is connected', and 'Applied' the change. The I toggled it back on and again 'Applied' it. Then a message popped up having to do with the iTunesHelper. I don't remember the specific message now but it seemed encouraging at the time.
Now iTunes does launch as it should when I connect this iPod. I won't be surprised if I have to do the same thing for the other iPod.
Apparently, install iTunes is not deleting or reinitializing the control settings as I was expecting. Either way, the mystery is solved. Thanks.

  • ITunes won't automically update to IOS 5 when connecting to iPod Touch

I followed the directions to connect my iPod to iTunes and it won't initiate the upgrade to IOS 5.  When I clicked on the check for updates button, I get a message that I am current.  Being that I am on version 4.2.7 I find that hard to believe.  I also tried a Manual download of IOS 5 and that did not work either.

Do you mean iOS 4.2.1?  If so, it means you likely have a 2G iPod Touch, which can only go as high as iOS 4.2.1.  See this article to help you determine what generation of your iPod Touch is.

  • ITunes won't detect updates

For some reason, my iTunes 10.4.1 won't detect the newest update for my iPod touch 3g (the current software is 4.2.1).  Please help!  I have already tried syncing and restoring.

My guess is that you really have a 2G iPod.  Those can only go as high as 4.2.1.  If yours is an 8 or 16 GB model it is surely a 2G since Apple only made 32 and 64 GB 3G iPods.  A 32 GB can be either a 2G or 3G.  To identify yours go to:

  • ITunes won't automatically open

When syncing my iPhone, on my phones page I have the box checked to open iTunes when phone is plugged in but it's not opening. Why not?

This may have something to do with iTunesHelper not running. I had the same issue with the latest versions of OS X and iTunes – even reinstalled iTunes recently (for another reason) but still could not get to iTunes to automatically open when I connected my iPod.
Here is what you can try.
    1. Open System Preferences
    2. Open Accounts
    3. Select the user where you use your iTunes
    4. Click on Login Items – if you see iTunesHelper there, make sure it is checked to open when you automatically when you log in. If it is already checked – I don’t know what is wrong, you can try the following steps but I am not sure. If you cannot see iTunesHelper – continue on…
    5. Leave this “Login Items” window open (do not check the “+” – just leave the window open)
    6. Open a finder window
    7. Select Applications
    8. Select iTunes – don’t click to open it – just highlight it.
    9. Now, with iTunes selected, look at icons on the menu bar of “Applications”, you should see a icon that looks like a little gear called “Action” – select this and choose “Show Package Contents”
    10. Then – Click Contents – Click Resources
    11. Scroll way down to the almost to the bottom – there you will see the little iTunesHelper (the icon looks like iTunes)
    12. Select and drag this icon to the “Login Items” window you left open in step 4 –
    13. Click the little box
    14. I logged out at this point, and even rebooted – YES, I know the “reboot” comes from my life with Windows – sorry, but since with an Apple it only takes about 40 Seconds – I figured it wouldn’t hurt.
    15. Now, if you have already selected the “Start iTunes automatically when ….” it should start.

  • Itunes won't install updates, because i't claims to have an invalid autograph. How to fix this?

I can't install any updates of itunes or Icloud or quicktime, because my computer sais it has an invalid autograph...I don't know what to do with this and I need to update my itunes, caus I just bought a Iphone 4s....
Can anyone help me with this???

Now, see, I did try that. My computer is now happily updating itself where it wasn't before, but still the same message. I also went and searched Google for a 'Windows Service Pack 2', which lead me to the microsoft site, which gave me the option of downloading the service pack. "Oh good!" I thought, "This will be fixed in no time!"
    Wrong.
I downloaded said service pack, tried to run it and it too decided not to work. It sprung up a message that was something like "There is nothing on your computer that needs this pack" or something like that.
Is my computer just so old that it's beyond saving? It is far older than a laptop should be, I know. I bought it in 2003. (I'd also like to point out that I'm not daft, I DID have a brand new laptop - which decided it didn't fancy having a working motherboard anymore. Clearly my ancient Toshiba is far more reliable.)

  • Itunes won't automatically open when iphone 4 connected

usually when i connect my iphone both iphoto and itunes would automatically open. now only iphoto opens. if i open itunes manually my phone is there and it syncs fine and so on. 'open itunes automatically' is selected as well. any ideas? thanks.

    Have you rebooted your computer?
If that doesn't fix it, UNCHECK 'open itunes automatically', save preferences, then go back and check it again.

  • Why won't Numbers update free, when my other iWork apps have update for free?

why won't Numbers update free, when my other iWork apps have update for free?

I'm not sure if this answers your question. I will update them in iTunes. Then I will connect my phone and in the phone controls I can click the "Update" button and it will change to "Will Update" but doesn't.
That's part of the problem. Once upon a time, iTunes would just automatically update apps from the computer to the phone and now it apparently requires prompting that doesn't work.
