ITunes won't backup 3GS

My iTunes locked up on me tonight, and now when I try and sync my phone, I get the following error:
itunes could not back up the iphone "iphone" because an unknown error occured (-20)
I can sync with another computer, but with my main computer the backup dies out. I have deinstalled and reinstalled itunes.
Any ideas? I'm willing to start from scratch and just import everything again.

I had the same problem, spent a lot of hours on the phone with apple they dont know what -20 is or how to fix it other than it has to be related to the 4.0.1 update. They did how ever make and appt for me to exchange my 3GS at an Apple Store but the 3 GS I got is a refubared one not a new one and now it is giving me problems even though it has the original 3.1.3 firmware installed by the factory.I am calling The Apple TechSupporvisor back today and letting him know the situation with this one ,as per him if I have any problems he will make sure I get a "new" in the box 3GS.

  • ITunes won't sync 3GS AT-ALL

hi there, I'm having some problems with iTunes, that being iTunes won't sync with my 3GS at all, when it gets to the "backing up iPhone" bit at the start theprogress bar won't even start, the diagonal lines that appear in the progress bar remain there for just over 2 hours (at which point I gave up) and the backing up and syncing never actualy happen.
I am using an iPhone 3GS 16gb iOS 4.0 and iTunes 9.2 for windows.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve my problem? Thanks in advance!

delete itunes from your pc and then reinstall it. also if you have a recent backup or dont mind losing the info on your iphone reinstall iOS4 on your iphone. but only if you have a recent backup or dont mind losing your data.

  • IPhone 4S : Wifi Password not accepting + iTunes won't backup the iPhone

    Hi,
Am using a MBP  2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo , 8 Gb Ram and running 10.8.3 Mountain Lion.
My issue is that after an update to iOS 6.1.2 , my iPhone 4S can't join my Home Wifi. The Error I get is Password is incorrect. All other iPhones and iPads and Macs at home login without an issue.
The next issue that started is that my iPhone syncs changes with iTunes, but is not able to do a backup. I get an error "iTunes could not backup xx because an error occurred."
2 huge issues - I can't get wifi and I can't upgrade to the new 6.1.3 in hope of solving some of these issues.
I can't do a clean install without taking a backup, since I'll lose all my Messages - SMS
HELP ... This is driving me crazy and I can't find a fix anywhere
    Thanks a million in advance
    Vivek

Use the app My Contacts Backup, which will back up your contacts as an attachment to an email.  Send this email to yourself.  At any point in the future you can open this email on your phone and tap the attachment to re-import the contacts to your phone.  (If you get a new phone, send the email to yourself from your computer and open it on your new phone to import the contacts.
Alternatively, if your contacts are in Address Book you can open Address Book, click on any single contact, go to Edit>Select All (Command-A) to select all contacts, go to File>Export>Save as vCard and save this on your desktop.  Then email this file to your phone and tap the attachment to import the contacts.

  • Please help - iTunes won't backup!!!!!!!

    Hello, all...can you help me?
I have iTunes 7.3.1 (I'm pretty sure) and when I tried to backup my library, it tells me to insert a blank disk...so I do. Then, it says "burn initializing" for a couple of seconds up at the top of iTunes (where the "Now Playing" displays) and then tells me to insert a blank disk. It's a continuous cycle.
Can anyone help me, or at least let me know where I can get iTunes 7.1? That was the only version that worked on my computer.

Do you have any older backups, or was that the only one. While iTunes will overwrite regular backups that are done, if you have done a restore in the past, those are kept with a date/time stamp. If one isn't too old, you can try that, but remember that anything done since that date/time would be lost.
The only other alternative is to restore the device as new and sync whatever data you can back from the computer.

  • ITunes won't backup my iPhone

I purchased a new iPhone 5 from Apple. I backed up my old 4S on iTunes last night and again today.  When I plug in the new phone, iTunes tells me the most recent backup was Sept. 9.
I just backed it up.  How can get iTunes to backup my phone and recognize the lastest backup?

Did you manually back up like this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766

  • ITunes won't backup iPad when syncing

I've had the iPad since May. Soon after, when syncing, the back-up phase seemed to stop progressing. iTunes hadn't frozen - it looks like its doing something... but the green bar stops moving.
When I click the little (X) on the itunes display, it then skips the backup phase and continues to sync. This is how I've been doing it for a while.
With iOS 3.2.1 and a backup is mandatory, once again it sits... no ipad upgrade for me.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it easy to correct?

Yesterday I put the iPad in to backup immediately. 5hrs later i got an error message after the bar had got 50% along... "itunes was unable to load dataclass information from Sync Services. Reconnect or try again later.
This article clued me in: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2690
I have Endpoint Protection for a clients network I VPN into. I uninstalled the checkpoint programs and voila!, backup took about 15min and then another 10min to upgrade to 3.2.1
I wouldn't say this issue is wrapped up... next time I connect to this VPN the Endpoint Protection will re-install itself, which I will have to uninstall to backup and sync the ipad... and round n round it goes.

  • IPhone won't backup during iTunes sync

Hi!  The last few times I've synced my iPhone 3GS in iTunes, it won't backup.  I get an error message after it goes through the other steps to sync apps and such. Normally the backup is step 1, then it does the other steps, but now it's skipping right to step 2 and then when it's finished gives me this message:
"iTunes could not backup the iPhone "Debbie's iPhone" because a session could not be started with the iPhone".  This is something I've never seen before.  Is there a fix?  It's making me nervous not having a current backup.
    Thanks, Debbie

Thanks, i've tried that already. It initiates the backup, but seems to backup one tune only, not the apps. The process takes less than a second, telling me that the apps did not transfer.

  • Cannot backup iPhone 3GS. Error Message: iTunes could not backup iPhone because iPhone Disconnected. What is the fix for this problem?

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me find a solution to my problem.
When a backup is attempted, it starts off as if it's working, then stops and the following error message appears: "iTunes could not backup iPhone because the iPhone disconnected". But, the iPhone doesn't really disconnect! It must be some type of internal glitch.
The iPhone is a 3GS and I have mostly pictures and contacts, two songs, a total of 33 apps. The iOS is updated (6.1.6). I do not know if this phone was ever jailbroke. I have been able to backup this phone before, but cannot now. The last backup was 9/21/13, it is now 3/2/14.
Sorry if there is too much info, or not the correct info to find a solution!
Also, I must say that although I am not a tekkie, I've seen many different types of various programs and I find that iTunes is not very intuitive...don't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, just my humble opinion.
    Thank You,
    Camp917

    Hey Lawrence,
A big THANK YOU!! to you! Your suggestions worked!
Before I changed USB ports (more on that in a sec...), I employed one of your suggestions that you gave to someone else with the same problem...and that was to clean the connector on the bottom of the phone with a soft dry tooth brush. I couldn't believe the amount of lint that came out! Especially what was found in either end...had to do some very careful picking. (Almost enough lint to knit a small sweater!!)
Changing the USB port was the second and final step required for a successful backup. My computer is a laptop, and I did have a USB Bluetooth adapter (for another device) installed. I removed  the adapter, plugged the iPhone into that USB port, crossed my fingers...and it worked!!!
Now if I can figure out the rest of this darn program, I might upgrade to a new iPhone!
Again, thank you very much Lawrence!

  • ITunes won't detect firmware 4.3.3 for iPhone 3GS

I've read about the problem where it doesn't download it and you have to turn off the firewall etc.  However my problem is that it just won't detect it at all.  I check for updates and it says that my iphone is update to date which is running on a 4.2.1.  I even tried to manualy do by downloading the firmware and going into recovery mode on the phone and shift clicking restore but then it says that the firmware is not compatible with my phone.
The phone is an iPhone 3GS not jailbroken running on 4.2.1.
    Running Windows 7 64bit.
I have the most recent version of iTunes.
I did the whole virus protection being off, firewall off and changing the host file thing.
Nothing seems to work and I'm not sure what else to do here.  I thought perhaps the 4.3.3 firmware wasn't for the 3GS but reading about it seems it is so I'm not sure why iTunes won't detect it.

    Try getting it from here
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/05/04/ios-4-3-3-download/
Download the version for your phone, then connect the phone to iTunes and hold SHIFT while clicking Check for Updates. You can then install the file you downloaded above.

  • Itunes won't launch after restoring from backup

I have retored my machine from time capsule backup, and now iTunes won't start up. The icon launches, but nothing happens

Get rid of Norton's, it's far more trouble than it's worth. This is exactly the kind of thing that happens when you run Disk Doctor or the other parts of the suite, and is why they got out of the Utilities market for the Mac.
    1. Try repair Permissions with Disk Utility
    2. Try Trash the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder
    3. Try Re-install iTunes. Move the app from the Applications Folder to the Trash, then go to HD / Library / Receipts and trash any pkg file there with iTunes in the name.

  • TS3159 Some songs that I've bought on iTunes won't play on my iPhone 3GS even though they used to and they will still play on iTunes.  Anyone know what I can do to get these songs to play on my iPhone again?

Some songs that I've bought on iTunes won't play on my iPhone 3GS even though they used to and they will still play on iTunes.  Anyone know what I can do to get these songs to play on my iPhone again?  Please help!

No, I haven't figured it out.  And no one from Apple has contacted me to help.  Very frustrating.  Sure makes me want to not buy music on iTunes and just buy CD's.
Do you have a 3GS too?  Maybe it's something with that phone??
