ITunes won't delete old podcasts

I've seen other people mention this topic in other threads, but haven't seen any satisfactory resolution. For several months now, I've had a problem with iTunes where it won't auto-delete my old listened to podcasts like it's supposed to.
I have the "Podcasts" preferences set to check for new episodes every day, download all available episodes, and keep all unplayed episodes. When I listen to them on my iPod nano (first gen) and sync with iTunes, the little blue bullets disappear from the podcasts I've listened to as expected. However, the listened to podcasts don't delete themselves. It's a real pain to have to manage this by hand, and this is exactly the kind of thing that Apple is supposed to be making EASY for us.
iTunes also has a problem where old podcast episodes are randomly getting re-downloaded.
Both of these problems are very annoying. I'm really disappointed that Apple has done such a poor job of this. I realize this is turning into a gripe session, but seriously, I have three pretty major problems with podcasting using iTunes and iPod which Apple should really fix because I doubt if I'm the only one.
1. Old podcasts are not getting deleted as they should (yes, this used to work, but it hasn't for some time).
2. Really old podcasts (months old) randomly re-download themselves.
3. The iPod still insists on sorting podcasts with the newest first rather than giving you an option to play from the oldest unlistened episode. Many podcasts go in sequence, so it's a pain to have to make a custom play list every time I want to listen going from oldest to newest.
That's it.

YES!!! These are precisely the three issues I'm having with iTunes! I'm using an 80GB iPod Video, and I'm almost exclusively listening to podcasts (yay NPR!). They take up a lot of space on my hard drive because they're not auto-deleting. They delete off of my iPod ok (though it'd be a cool feature if it didn't delete unless it was listened to through the end, but that's nitpicking), but they pile up in my podcasts directory until I delete them manually, even though I have "keep new episodes" selected.
And please, allow for podcasts to play in chronological order on my iPod, oldest on top! I think I remember reading somewhere that having them appear the other way is actually touted as a benifit?
As for the random download of old episodes, I've had that, and it's annoying, but an easy enough thing to delete or skip, and mark as played on the mac.
I had the lack of updates problem for a while, I inexplicably lost Marketplace for several months, but now it's back... Those last two problem aren't Apple's fault, I suspect; just a result of several pieces to a puzzle needing to be exactly right in order to work correctly.
Thanks for re-introducing this topic, here's hoping for a solution!

  • Delete old podcasts?

*** please someone tell me how to delete old podcasts in the new iTunes bollocks there is no ability to highlight and delete! How can this be?

Which view are you looking at? In iTunes / Podcasts / List, there is no way to remove the items - if you mark them as played, the file will disappear from your computer, but the item will still be in the Lists pane, with a cloud icon beside it.
The "My Podcasts" or "My Stations" panes seem to be more useful at this point.
Now, if you're trying to stop them from downloading again: don't delete the podcast file in the first place. Instead, mark it as played - and that should make it disappear. If you delete it without playing it, iTunes for some reason thinks you must want it back. (Note that deleting on the iPhone still does what you'd expect it to do - delete the darn file! - but in iTunes it doesn't seem to work.)

  • How do I delete old podcasts that I downloaded directly to my iPod Touch?

I cannot delete old podcasts that I downloaded directly to my iPod Touch through its Wifi connection. Manually deleting them in iTunes doesn't work--my laptop doesn't recognize that they are on my iPod. What should I do? I want my memory back!

I have the same problem.  I usually can delete by swiping but for some reason the delete button doesn't show up on this podcast.
I don't know exactly what I did, but when I downloaded from the iTunes store over WiFi, it just downloaded a link to the podcast so I need to be connected to a Wifi network to play it.

  • How do I delete old podcasts and sync new podcasts without getting duplicates

I  have an iPod Nano.  I've enjoyed downloading podcasts and listening to them while walking my dog.  I want to delete the podcasts I've already listened to and download only those I haven't heard.  If I delete old podcasts, will iTunes be able to identify and download only podcasts I haven't listened to?

You don't have to use the Podcasts app.  If you delete it and sync to iTunes on your computer via USB the podcasts will appear back in the Music app.  You can delete them there.

  • Itunes continues to download old podcasts i have played

With this latest update, iTunes continues to download old podcasts I have already played and deleted.
Is this an iTunes problem or is there a setting a missed with the update?
    Thanks,
    Don

No. Those purchases/downloads were made with her Apple ID and are permanently linked to it. To download those updates you will need her credentials regardless of which Apple ID is signed into iTunes.

  • Cannot delete old podcast episodes after updating to ios 8

The usual way of manually deleting old podcast episodes, swiping right to left and then selecting the red delete button, appears to be no longer available. Do I need to fix something or is there a new way of doing this function?

Have you tried swiping left to right?
Try going to Settings>General>Usage>Podcasts  and select the the podcast you want to delete and tap edit in in upper left and delete the podcast.

  • ITunes trying to sync old podcasts (and failing!)

I have a 30GB video iPod. Trying and it failing to sync with iTunes on MacBook Pro. Same problems happen with new shuffle so would seem to be an iTunes problem.
First of all it says some items in the iTunes library including xxxx were not copied because they could not be found. It then gives a list of OLD podcasts that I can't find in iTunes or in finder.
Is there a corrupt file that tells iTunes to look for old podcasts to sync with?
It gets so far and then says "attempting to copy to the disk yyyyyy failed. The disc could not be read from or written to.
However it is NOT an iPod problem. The same iPod will sync fine with iTunes on a windows PC and a Shuffle suffers the same problem with this MacBook Pro.
    TIA

Welcome to the Palm Support Community Emily, but I'm at a loss as to what you are asking...
What exactly is "the new operating system"?   Windows 7?   If so, what bit depth is it?  32bit or 64bit?
What is "that file" you're referring to that you think is a .dll?   Your Contacts and Calendar data?
What is "Outlook 7"?   Microsoft Outlook 2007?
If indeed you've just obtained Windows 7, and it's the 64bit version, there is a way to sync the TX via a wireless method - either BlueTooth or Wifi.
Please read the thread I wrote on "How to sync the TX and Vista64" at the top of this section.  It's very similar to Windows 7.

  • ITunes 11.1 won't let me delete old podcasts

I know it's been covered in many other posts, but want to make sure Apple hears this.
ITunes 11.1's new podcast section insists on showing me years of old podcasts I've already listened to and want to delete and never see again. This is not a feature. This is a bug. You are making my life less happy. Change it right now.
    Brian L.

Oh how I agree.  Most agrivating thing in the world.  Must be an employee getting even with apple.  Don't see how anyone who uses this program could have let it slip through.  Doesn't anyone at apple actually buy and iphone?  Sort of like when Ford president looked out the window and he only saw toyoto cars in the employee parking lot.  Simply can't believe this.
Otherwise one other small complaint.  The backgrounds are too white and hurt my eyes.  How about a softer text background color please.

  • Itunes latest revision how do I delete old podcasts?

Used to select items, right click mouse, select delete, and done. Now, right click mouse, no delete choice, what's up?

    Hi Tim4909!
You should follow the instructions linked below for deleting music in iTunes to delete the podcasts you no longer want:
    Music
Open the section below for the device you are using.
    iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    Mac or PC
Before you delete, find out if you'll be able to download the song you deleted again (it depends on where you live). To delete a song:
    Launch iTunes.
From the Library pop-up menu, choose Music.
Click Songs in the navigation bar.
Click the song you want to delete.
Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
In iTunes 11, the album cover art will remain visible, but a cloud icon will appear on it to allow you to download the item again (in countries that support this).
Note: If you didn't purchase a song from the iTunes Store, you won't be able to download it again for free from iTunes in the Cloud. You might want to back it up somewhere on your computer.
How to delete content you've downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, or Mac App Store

  • Auto-delete old podcasts in iTunes 12

In iTunes 12, how can I set things up so that it will auto-delete old podcasts

Thanks for the input! I right clicked one of the disappearing episodes, but there was no "Save Episode" on the drop down menu. There was "Remove From Saved Episodes" option.

  • Itunes won't delete podcasts that I've played on my ipod, only itunes

I have itunes setup to delete podcasts after its played and it works great. However, since I use my ipod more to play podcasts, I would also like Itunes to sync up with my ipod and delte podcasts that I've played on the ipod.
Does anyone know how to set this up?

Might be an authorization issue in iTunes. Try deauthorizing your computer through the Store menu at the top of iTunes and then authorizing it again. Once that is done try transferring purchases from the iPod Touch.

  • How do i delete old podcasts on my iphone

I have old podcasts on my iphone.  Apple, the intelligent company that they are, have removed podcasts from the music app.  Now I can't delete these old podcasts because the new "podcast" app doesn't recognize them.  How can I get rid of them?

You don't have to use the Podcasts app.  If you delete it and sync to iTunes on your computer via USB the podcasts will appear back in the Music app.  You can delete them there.

  • ITunes won't sync HD Podcasts to iPad

My iTunes (every version since the iPad 3G came out) will not transfer HD podcasts to my iPad. It reports that "Some of the videos in your iTunes Library, including.... were not copied to the iPad... because they cannot be playe" (yes, it drops the "d" at the end of that)... HD movies play fine. And, if i directly download the HD podcasts to the iPad, they WILL play just fine. Why won't iTunes transfer them if it CAN play them (theoretically and by direct download to the iPad) I'd rather control it all through iTunes than have to individually download HD podcasts to the iPad. Is this a bug?

    Here's the reason why...
iTunes on the desktop is very strict about the video you can sync to the iPad. If the video falls outside the guidelines (*see below) for videos on the ipad, iTunes won't transfer the video.
I just downloaded a full HD podcast video from iTunes to my iPad and desktop computer. Both of these videos play just fine. When I synced the iPad to my desktop computer iTunes would not transfer the video to the iPad. The video is 1920x1080, this outside the guideline for iTunes to transfer the video to the iPad.
The iPad is capable of playing a 1080p videos. When i need to send a 1080p to my ipad I use the GoodReader app to do so. It is iTunes (on the desktop) that is placing these restrictions on the videos that can be transfer to the iPad.
If you want to you can voice your opinion  to Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html
*H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • Won't delete old e-mails on Yahoo app

In the past week my wife's Galaxy S III had an issue crop up with her Yahoo mail app. She had some old e-mails saved in a folder appear in her InBox. When you open them to look at the subject matter, it's blank except for the subject. Since it was blank she decided to delete it. After it has been deleted it reappears in the InBox after it has refreshed. She has about 6 old emails like this that won't delete, I even tried moving them back to their original folder and moving them to Spam, with the same outcome. It logged on to her account on our home computer and it shows everything is normal, none of those emails show in the inbox. It's like two separate accounts. I stopped by my local Verizon store and after 45 minutes to an hour the Rep. there gave up and suggested that I contact Verizon CS Level 2 support to see if they can help. They're my next stop, unless someone here has a solution.

Thanks for contacting the community forums, kscfire. I had a similar situation on my Android device. I was able to log into a computer to delete the email that kept showing  a subject but empty body.
You can also clear the cache for the email http://bit.ly/UasC7T to see if that works. Once cleared, power off/on and check the email box again.
Worst case scenario, remove the email app and reinstall it.

  • Front Row still displays deleted old podcast episode

I have subscribes to ScreenCastsOnline podcast, and one of the episodes was an audio update. It is only since I checked in iTunes today that I have found I don't actually have that episode in iTunes anymore, and it is definately not in the Podcasts folder within the iTunes folder. Yet Front Row is saying I still have it, and it has a blue ball next to it to say it hasn't been played. If I try to play it, Front Row tells me it can't be played (obviously because the file is no longer there).
I have tried unsubscribing to ScreenCastsOnline and making sure there is no trace of it in the iTunes folder, and yet the one episode is STILL listed on Front Row!!
    How can I remove it?

    Update:
Firstly, there are actually TWO old podcast episodes total that are not on my Mac anymore but are listed on Front Row. I removed any trace of all Podcasts in iTunes and the podcast folder disappeared in the iTunes Music library folder, yet two podcasts remained in FR.
Secondly, I opened the iTunes Music Library.xml file with Text Edit, and found entries for both of these podcasts within using a search. I have removed the keys associated with both and did a search again to confirm they had been removed. I rebooted and tried FR again, and the podcasts are STILL there!!! What else can I do, PLEASE????
