ITunes won't force quit and is hanging after update

OK, so I downloaded the new update for my iPhone. While it said preparing to install it took a long time. I figured it was frozen so I did a force quit. Now I'm stuck. I can't get into my iPhone because it is showing a picture of the plug going into iTunes logo.
I can't force quit itunes either. It just doesn't do anything. I tried rebooting and iTunes is still "open" and won't respond.
Any help would be appreciated

I seemed to have gotten it to finally disappear after rebooting again and again. Though it sent my phone into recovery mode so I'm working on that

  • My iTunes won't force quit and says it's still syncing my iPhone after hours of syncing.

My iTunes won't force quit and says it's still syncing my iPhone after hours of syncing. I had plugged in my iPhone 4S in the morning before I left for school, it synced almost completely, and then it got stuck on "Finishing Sync". I pulled my iPhone out because I had to leave to go to school, and iTunes is still stuck on "Finishing Sync". I tried force quitting and restarting but it's of no use. Now I can't use iTunes at all.

Scratch that, I TRIED to shut down but I guess iTunes overrided it because it still thinks it's syncing

  • Initial sync hangs up iTunes until a force quit and restart?

I have an iPod classic. When I first plug it into iTunes, it does an automatic sync that hangs up the iPod and iTunes. I have to force quit iTunes, and restart. Once I restart, everything is fine. Any suggestions?

You might be able to trick iMovie by temporarily moving that project folder out of the following location:
Mac HD > Users > (your home folder) > Movies > iMovie Projects > (look for the name of the project that blew-up)
Drag that project folder to the Desktop for the time being. Launch iMovie and see if it still tries to create the Project Thumbnails. If it gets past any error messages or other house keeping, you can create a new project. Otherwise, quit iMovie. Drag that project folder from the desktop BACK into your iMovie Projects folder. Try launching iMovie again and see if it gets stuck generating the Thumbnails.

Hi Bill, Welcome to the New Apple Discussions.
These kinds of problems with different apps crashing can crop up after updates. Have you carried out any of the suggestions in the following link lately?

It refers to a previous updates before Tiger but the advice is still correct.

  • Excel won't force quit and won't open.

I'm on Yosemite.  No problems at first.  But now if I try to open an excel file I get the error message "The application “Microsoft Excel” is not open anymore."  I get the same message when I try to open the application from the applications folder.  Excel appears in the Force Quit options but won't disappear when I force quit it.  That's about the limit of my troubleshooting, any ideas?

OK I turned my mac off and on (as per the IT Crowd) - it worked  :0/

  • Itunes will not force quit and freezes often

I recently moved my itunes folder to an external hard drive. since then it has a had lots of troubles. I resolved some of the issues that were related to itunes 8 (deleted the genius.itdb file to avoid error 13026). However itunes is still regularly freezing when i play songs or add songs to the library. when i attempt to force quit itunes, it will disappear from the force quit menu but the dock still shows it as running, when I reopen the force quit menu it is still listed. i have to restart my computer to get it to quit so i can attempt to reopen it. is this a problem with the hard drive? or do i need to do something else?

Hold the power button down for 7 seconds or more.

  • Itunes won't start, iPhoto / Front Row Hang after Leopard install

I upgraded a Intel 2.0MHz 24" iMac this morning. I have never had any upgrade problems before. Last night the iLife 8.1.1 update was installed. Was using iTunes all morning. I got my Leopard CD via Fedex and popped it in. Install went smoothly with no issues. The only thing out of the ordinary during the installation was that I hit cancel when the Time Machine setup opened because I don't have a hard disc ready for it yet.
All seems to be OK except for iTunes, iPhoto, and Front Row.
    1. iTunes hangs every time I try to start it and I have to Force Quit. Library is on an external drive that is available and working in Finder.
    2. iPhoto will open and show my library, but hangs anytime I chose Edit. Library is on main drive, but I have preferences set not to have iPhoto copy items to the library. I tried rebuilding library but that hangs too.
    3. Front Row hangs when I choose music or movies. I can't exit it and have to do a hard shutdown.
This is my first disappointment since switching about six months ago. Any insight on how to fix this would be appreciated. I am fully backed up prior to install, but it was not a bootable backup.

I seem to have located the problem. I disabled my Perian install and iTunes, iPhoto, and Front Row started working. I also reinstalled the MPEG2 support for Quicktime, but I believe Perian is what fixed the issue.

  • Itunes, have to force quit, will not work since update

After the itunes and quicktime updates, itunes no longer works. After about 10 seconds after launching itunes, it tries to process and then you have to force quit itunes.
any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    brookesuk,
    Thanks for asking...
    A Quick primer
On Macs, the Macintosh HD (or whatever you have renamed it to) icon is on the desktop, right?
So if you open this, you see a Library folder, it is also referred to as /Library
(with the "/" indicating root level, i.e. Macintosh HD)
If you go to your Home folder, it has a Library folder too. It is referred to as ~/Library. (With the "~/" indicating user level)
Now, these steps (taken from KB 25398, section B3), summarize this well:
    1. Go to ~/Library
    2. Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
    3. Attempt to reproduce the issue.
    4. If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash.
    5. If issue persists, go to /Library.
    6. Drag the Caches folder to the desktop.
    7. Attempt to reproduce the issue.
    8. If issue is resolved, drag the Caches folder to the Trash
    Hope this helps,
    Generik

  • FCP hangs on launch and then won't force quit

I am having trouble launching FCP.
it will hang about at the point that it is llooking for the deck. I try to force quit and it hangs up there too.
I did manage to get it to come up once but I noticed in thhe capture settings that the Apple Firewire setting was (missing). I have also been getting the "You must restart hold down the power button" message alot lately.

    Here is my suggestion
    1. Update Mac Pro EFI Firmware. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproefifirmwareupdate12.html
    2. Reset PRAM via the following process:
Shut down your Mac Pro , then start it back up while immediately holding the following keys: Command, Option, P and R.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
    3. Erase FCP preferences files. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93832
    4. unplug all GRAID. Basically FireWire VTR and Storage need separate bus, so you needs a PCIe FW card.
Usually you can hook up both FW storage and VTR on the same FireWire bus; it is not stable, but at least you can captuer or control the deck.
    5. update CalDigit's FASTA-4e driver to 2.0.3 http://www.caldigit.com/support.asp
    6. are you using apple original memory?
We are using Apple original RAM 8Gigs, CalDigit FASTA-4e card, CalDigit S2VR Duo 1.5TB, FCP 5.1.2, OS 10.4.8, been running a while, no problem at all.
If you still have this problem, you can try to disconnect all external devices and memory one by one to point which component causing that issue.

  • Iphoto frozen, won't force quit - but pretends to!

Iphoto has simply frozen, won't force quit and hides until I call up all open windows by squeezing the mouse buttons - it shows as a window with a blue highlight all around.  Not sure whats happened.  Tried connecting camera and importing, but wont open - still stays hidden from view.  Also tried synching Iphone but same happens.  Small dot shows Iphoto as open, but nowhere to be seen until I squeeze the mouse - then the highlighted window pops up, but doesn;t allow me to do anything and disappears as soon as I let go of the ouse buttons. Help please....

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Itunes won't open, won't force quit, won't anything

This problem started about a month ago and now it's critical.
When I click the itunes icon, it bounces and then freezes. itunes won't open. It also won't force quit. I can't shut down because, it says, itunes won't quit. I have to hold down the power button 7 seconds to shut down and then restart. My IT guy at work (who is a Mac person) showed me how to repair permissions and the first half dozen or so times this happened, that worked. Now it won't. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes. I've tried reinstalling and repairing permissions. I've rebooted and repaired and reinstalled.
This is the kind of thing I switched from PCs to get away with.
Does anyone have any ideas? I really need to be able to use itunes.
    Thanks,
    Teresa

    Teresa
Here are some basic to try in turn, see if any one will help:
Ensure that you have the latest version of the OS and Quicktime and iTunes.
    1. Delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    2. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • ITunes won't start up and can't be quit

    Hi everyone,
this morning I was asked to install some updates, which I did. I didn't even check what they were, just authorized it. Now I can't get iTunes to start up. It just won't do it. I see the little blue dot underneath the icon in the dock but it won't open and says application not responsive or something like that. I also can't force quit it. I need to restart the computer to quit it. I also noticed that it takes absolute ages to reboot...I'm talking Windows standards (eeek!).
Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?
    Cheers,
    Claudia

I'm having the same problem. Logging in as my self or someone else doesn't help. Every once in a while iTunes will start and work, but after a while it will no longer be on the screen and if I go to Force Quit it show iTunes as not responding, but it won't force quit. Any help out there would be great.

  • PS CS3 Crashes and Won't Force Quit

Using Mac OS X 10.5.2 and latest PS. PS crashes and won't force quit. I have to reboot. Then after opening PS again and barely start editing a file (nothing else is running and I have 4GB ram) PS crashes again.
Also the reset password function on the Adobe site refuses to work and I can't get any support. This is getting really frustrating.

I assume you trashed your preferences? Look in your user Library/Preferences folder and delete your com.adobe.Photoshop.plist file where your preferences are stored. Other than that, I have no clue. Did you try editing different files to see if it could be just that one file giving you problems? I have been using PS CS3 for the past three days, and I have noticed a lot of instability which I didn't have with PS 7. Of course, new machine, new programs, I was expecting a few glitches, but hopefully the dust will settle soon and my workflow will become stable again.
