ITunes won't install because an older version of iTunes cannot be removed

I'm running on Windows XP.
I had tried to update my iTunes a few days ago and it was failing because it complained about iTunes.msi. I tried to uninstall and it had the same complain. So I manually removed it and started to remove all references to apple and iTunes in my registry. After that, it no longer showed up in my add/remove applications but if I try to install iTunes (latest or an older version), it complains that it can't install because it can't remove an older version of iTunes.
I downloaded Windows Install Clean Up, but it doesn't list iTunes in there or anything that looks like it might be it. I've tried a number of registry cleaners but still no luck. Any ideas? It's obviously finding some information about my old iTunes install in there somewhere, but it can't figure out how to remove it. I wish it had some kind of debugging mode where it would tell me why it thinks I have iTunes installed still.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ace ... I try not to post links to alternate locations for CleanUp downloads, because that tends to lead to the download location being shut down. (Happened twice for me the day after it was removed from the Microsoft Downloads Center.)
Assuming you've got trouble with an iTunes .msi file, here's a copy of my now-standard spiel on hunting down, installing and using CleanUp:
These sorts of msi-related troubles have gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing iTunes 9.2 again. Does the install go through properly this time?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

    Akeenleyside,
Are you removing your Apple software in an attempt to update to iTunes 10.5?  I ask this because I am getting the same message when trying to install iTunes 10.5.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you are running 64-bit Windows and the above steps haven't helped try installing the version of iTunes that can be downloaded from this support document. iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
If you still have no luck try reinstalling iTunes 12.0, links in the user tip.

  • ITunes/Quicktime problem "The older version of Quicktime cannot be removed"

Whenever I try installing iTunes 7, I get the message "The older version of Quicktime cannot be removed." A similar problem with the same wording similarly cropped when I downloaded iTunes 6.
Source of the problem is a failed System Restore which left files corrupted and such, I've tried using ccCleaner to remove iTunes and Quicktime from the registry but it simply isn't there, as is the case when I use regedit in Run.
Add/Remove Programs doesn't work as well, when I click on uninstall for iTunes/iPod/Quicktime there just isn't any response or window that pops up

okay, let's try the technique from the following post. (it includes instructions on what to do if Add/Remove isn't working for a program.)

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

(If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.

  • "the older version of quicktime cannot be removed. Contact your technical s

I keep getting an error "the older version of quicktime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." No I have removed all od copies of Quick time and used Windows Install Clean Up and tried to repair Quick Time and stil can not install the latest version. Plus now Itunes is not working. Any thoughts.

The problem with reinstalls or upgrades saying a previous version is installed when one isn't sounds familiar. I couldn't get 7.2 to install correctly, so I tried reinstalling 7.1.5. Received an error message saying I couldn't because a newer version was already installed. I tried using the Windows Uninstaller Cleaner someone here posted a link for to solve the problem. I found an entry for 7.1.5 with no application name (which it should have)and deleted it, but that still didn't solve the problem. What I found interesting was that I edited the registry to remove all references to QT (and there are hundreds of them). That still didn't solved the problem. I would like to know where it gets that info about what's been installed previously. It just occurred to me that they may have planted a cookie. I'll check. If you find out where the info on previous installs is hidden post it.
