Itunes won't install

I am having major problems trying to get itunes to work. I am using a Dell laptop with windows vista and an ipod touch. I had no problems for a couple years. Then, I had to replace my hard drive and reinstall everything. At first, I did have itunes running. But it would not do anything with my ipod anymore. On rare occasions, it would show the icon, and I would click it, then it would disappear. So, I can't make a playlist or add any photos. The ipod touch works fine, but my computer wasn't letting me do anything with it.
A few months ago, I decided that maybe the problem was that it was a newer version of itunes than before, and I just couldn't figure it out. So, I uninstalled it and tried to install an older version. Since then, I have not been able to get any version of itunes to open. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 15-20 times now. I have also installed quick time, bonjour, apple mobile device support. I tried to uninstall apple software update, but that one would not delete, even going through regedit.
I don't know if it is related, but I am also having to reset firefox every few days now as it gets really slow and videos won't play. Then, once reset, I have to reinstall flash. I also lost my CD burner for awhile because of deleting itunes.
I am so frustrated. I really don't need to use the program itunes very often, but I really need to make some new playlists and move one item off a list that I don't want to delete, but should never played in a playlist (it's a movie, the whole thing). I like to play music in my car while driving, and I can't be adjusting it while I am driving. I also need to upload photos. I am a pet photographer, and it is in downright embarrassing that I can't show current photos of my own cat. The only way I can get a new photo on it is to email it to myself and save it the camera folder. This is crazy.
On one occasion, I got this error (but not anymore):
The registry used by the itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs is missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall itunes.
The error I usually get is:
A required itunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall itunes. 42404.
I have followed various sets of instructions here several times. I have tried repair as well.
Any ideas? Any way to edit playlists on my ipod touch without itunes? Any way to upload photos without itunes? Do I really need to buy a cheapo used desktop just so that I can edit my ipod???

well done John!
The different download worked for me as well. I have seen this issue for a week. I wonder why Apple has not replaced the link on the iTunes site?
hmmm. apologies for being nosy, but do you mind if i ask a few follow-up questions?
what browser, security software and ISP were you using?
here's why i'm curious. that message
b can
be caused by a server problem, but the one time i've seen that happen, we got
b way
more reports of the message than we're currently getting.
there's also a "background level" of these things which get reported ... but you're absolutely right that there's been
b way
more of these reported over the past week than we were getting as the background level ...
so it's plausible that there's something new afoot. i know that the QT+iT download site behaves a little differently from some of the other download sites. (for example, some people running McAfee Privacy Service who get the "blank blue box" on the itunes download page
b can
actually see the download controls on the QT+iT page ...) so i'm still open to the possibility that it's something about the PC/software/ISP configuration in individual cases.
dunno what that could be, though.
love, b

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • ITunes won't install. PLEASE. HELP. URGENT.

iTunes won't install. My PC got reformatted. Now, I can't install iTunes. I've been trying to install it for like 3 months now, then it still won't. I've tried to remove it completely, following the guidelines Apple has given. AND ALMOST EVERYTHING.
Then the other day, I was really really happy that I got it installed, I removed AVG Anti-virus from the PC and turned off ThreatFire. I thought that was the end of my problem, then yesterday, when I opened iTunes it won't work again! So I tried to re-install it, following every guideline. Still, it won't install! In the installing process, around "Registering iTunes automation server", I ALWAYS get the message "Some of its required files are missing. Please re-install."
I REALLY DO NEED YOUR HELP.

Describe what happens when you try to open iTunes - do you see anything? If there is an error message give it in full.
If there is no error message open the task manager (ctrl alt del) and look on the processes tab, do you see iTunes.exe there and does it stay there.
Try opening Quicktime - does that work normally, iTunes cannot work if QUicktime doesn't. If it doesn't work, describe what happens and give any error message.

  • ITunes won't install on my OS 10.3. Will Tiger 10.4 run it?

My PowerMac G4 is running Panther 10.3.9. I have a 733 MHz processor. iTunes won't install nor can I view any videos. If I go to Youtube the system crashes. Some sites tell me I need a flashplayer upgrade, but it won't install. An Apple tech told me to upgrade to Leopard 10.5 and it would solve my problems. My understanding is that Leopard 10.5 needs 867MHz to run. If I upgrade to Tiger 10.4 will that solve any of my problems?

    Hello marwhi,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
Yes, OS 10.3.9 cannot run the latest iTunes 9. You will need at least Mac OS 10.4.11 and above to run it. Your problem with YouTube may just be with your browser if you are using Safari. For now you might want to try Camino 1.6.9 and see if you have any better luck. Camino 1.6.9 tends to be a slightly more updated version of browser than the last version of Safari that runs on 10.3.9 Panther. If you do upgrade to Tiger 10.4.11 though you would be able to use a more updated version of Safari which will "play" nicer with sites such as YouTube and Google etc.
Hardware and software system requirements for iTunes 9 can be found at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
And here are the "Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger System Requirements". You will need to purchase a "full retail" version of Tiger 10.4 install discs from a third party reseller such as on ebay etc. and the discs tend to sell for a premium these days. General idea of price can be seen by going to ebay and searching for "full retail 10.4 Tiger install" and then clicking on the "Completed Auctions" link in the left column. This should give your a good idea of what they tend to sell for on the resale market when available. Do not purchase machine specific or "upgrade" discs.

  • ITunes won't install. Says error writing to file C:\Program Files\itunes\itunes.resources\da.lproj\AboutBox.rft

    iTunes won't install.
Says error writing to file C:\Program Files\itunes\itunes.resources\da.lproj\AboutBox.rft
Does anybody know what I need to do to fix this?

I am the administrator, so this can't be a rights problem. The error message says "error writing to file c:\program files\apple software update\softwareupdate.exe. Verify that you have access to that directory".
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive, as per the following document:
How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • ITunes won't install on my Toshiba - it used to have iTunes!

iTunes won't install. It used to have iTunes, but I cleared it off when I thought I no longer needed the computer (big mistake). Now it's my only computer and I want iTunes back, but when I try to install it it reads "This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows installer package. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer Service."
Now, how do I do that? I tried faffing about with installing this and that yesterday, but none of it seemed to work. I'm a stupid girl with no computer skills - I need definitive instructions!

Now, see, I did try that. My computer is now happily updating itself where it wasn't before, but still the same message. I also went and searched Google for a 'Windows Service Pack 2', which lead me to the microsoft site, which gave me the option of downloading the service pack. "Oh good!" I thought, "This will be fixed in no time!"
    Wrong.
I downloaded said service pack, tried to run it and it too decided not to work. It sprung up a message that was something like "There is nothing on your computer that needs this pack" or something like that.
Is my computer just so old that it's beyond saving? It is far older than a laptop should be, I know. I bought it in 2003. (I'd also like to point out that I'm not daft, I DID have a brand new laptop - which decided it didn't fancy having a working motherboard anymore. Clearly my ancient Toshiba is far more reliable.)

  • Itunes won't install. AMDS won't uninstall

Itunes won't install. I've tried to uninstall itunes and all apple software so that I can install the latest version. But it won't let me uninstall apple Mobile Device Support. Can anybody help? How do I get iTunes back? Whenever I try to install the latest version it gets stuck just after checking the AMDS.

There is no text error message. The install of itunes just freezes on the "Checking Space Requirements" bit (which is immediately after it checks AMDS.
Hmmmm. Possibly a disk/file damage issue there, tom. If so, running a chkdsk over your C drive might help.
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors

I understand that you can not update iTunes due to a .msi error.  I would recommend uninstalling iTunes and all of it's components as outlined in the first article below.  For any component that gives you the .msi error, go through the steps in the second article below.
