ITunes won't launch if iPod is connected but ejected

If I connect my iPod (set to Disk Use, no auto-launch of iTunes), then eject it through the Finder, iTunes won't launch. It hangs with no window until force quit or the iPod is unplugged. I've noticed this through several versions of iTunes.
Note that I found this topic already in existence here, but I felt that the issue needed a bump to the top of the list.

Does your quicktime work perfectly? I got that message when I tried to open iTunes 5 a couple times, and my quicktime wasn't being sensed by the computer at all. It was just there.

    going nuts! My iTunes will not launch when i connect my ipod or ipad. the setting to allow this is greyed out as is the option 'sync only ticked itmes'. I have uninstalled and installed iTunes several times. Changed as many settings as I can and back again. iMatch is on but that is causing me no end of grief too.     I've been having a problem over the last several days where iTunes will bounce a couple of times in the Dock, the black triangle appears below the Dock icon, but no window opens up and eventually iTunes shows that it's not responding. I am unable to force quit or kill it in Activity Monitor, and it prevents logging out, restarting or shutting down. I can kill it from the Terminal, and it immediately disappears from 'top' but takes several minutes to disappear from Activity Monitor or to lose the black triangle in the Dock. Trashing the plists for iTunes does not help, and Preferential Treatment and TinkerTool System both report that all is well. I ran the full suite of TechTool Pro tests, as well as directory maintenance and defragging. I also ran the maintenance tasks, disk optimization and pre-binding in TinkerTool System. I've repaired permissions with Disk Utility. iTunes appears to be working normally and without issue in my wife's user. Finally, after reading a post here, I tried unplugging my wife's iPod Shuffle before opening iTunes, and lo and behold, iTunes popped right up. If I connect it after starting iTunes, it's detected as normal.
    So, my shotgun ammo is exhausted. Anybody have any idea what would cause my user to be unable to open iTunes when an iPod is connected, but the same works just fine with my wife's user?

    I had this problem ever since I installed iTunes 7...
    It occoured as soon as I installed the new verison while still using my old 4gb first gen. iPod nano.
    Now I just recently bought a new second generation nano, and still have the same problem.
    And the issue is, Whenever I close iTunes while my iPod is connected (but not being updated), i get the message that "iTunes.exe has preformed an illegal operation and will be closed".
    Though I just noticed that if I disconnect the iPod before closing itunes, it closes fine and normally.
    I Have tried to solve it by following toturials for uninstalling both just iTunes, and iTunes + QuickTime at the same time, and preform separate installations after cleaning the temp. folder and restarting. None of it has helped me solve the problem
    -And I have lived with ifor a while, but it is getting really annoying if I am sititng on my computer and jsut close iTunes, without disonnecting my iPod, to run another program using sound or a lot of system resources. And thne each time get the error-message that "iTunes preformed an illegal operation and..."
    Anytihng that can be done? -I run NO plugins for the record, and the iPod is connected by USB cable (seeing it is a Nano)
    Anything anyne can suggest that I'd do, then please tell.
    -Or if anyone need to know more then please ask.

    Hi, Im sorry just to add on to this discussion but I couldnt figure out how to start a new discussion and I am going mad! I have a new ipod because my last one was stolen and I have plugged it in and my PC wont recognise it. I think that is because my old ipod is the only one my computer will accept. Can that be right? It said the hardware device had been detected and then it said that it was troubled and it simply did not work. Now it is plugged in and not at all recognised in my computer anywhere. Can any one help this clueless girl who simply wants to listen to music again?

    It used to but suddenly stopped.  It does show up on the device list.  The option box is checked.  I've turned the iPod off and even restarted my Mac.  It launches iPhoto, but not iTunes.  I've got the latest version of iTunes.

    I tried syncing my 3rd Generation Ipod Nano like I always do, via a dock connector and my laptop. But when I plugged it in it at first wasn't being recognized by iTunes (10), so I closed the program to see if a reboot of the program would solve the problem, and now iTunes just won't open while my iPod is plugged in to my laptop! Once I unplug though, iTunes pops back up!!
    More information: It looks like my laptop may not be recognizing the USB Port that I plugged my dock connector in to. I don't get that symbol in the Notification Area that something is plugged in to a USB Port. I've tried other ones though, same problem.
    I've also had to unplug my iPod from the connector without ejecting it (as iTunes wasn't recognizing the device, so I couldn't) will this damage my iPod?

    iPhone and iPod touch: An unknown error (13014), (13136), or (13213) may occur after updating to iTunes 8.0.1 or later
    Solution 1
    Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed.
    Solution 2
    Quit and reopen iTunes. If the issue continues, then restart your computer.
    Solution 3
    Quit iTunes, temporarily disable the anti-virus security software on your computer, then reopen iTunes and try to sync your device. If iTunes successfully syncs your iPhone or iPod touch, consult the anti-virus software vendor.
    Solution 4
    Turn off Genius in iTunes in the Genius sidebar (choose View > Hide Genius Sidebar).

    When I connect (via windows computer) to Itunes with usb cord the Ipod icon shows, but the only function you can do is eject. When its in the upper right hand corner and you click on it all you get is a done button, when it's in the side bar right click and your only option is eject, left click has no effect. If I go to "file">devices it's as if there are no devices connected.
    I purchased a song with Itunes on the Ipod itself, and it transferred to my library on the computer automatically .
    I have an Iphone 5 and a nano that are still functioning with Itunes thru computer so I'm thinking the issue is with the Ipod touch. I've reset it several times, rebooted it, with no change.
    nothing on the internet has helped, I called tech support and got disconnected. Should I take it to a retail store? I just don't know where to go next, I'm of course willing to pay for tech or repair. looking for suggestions.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer          
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Try the iPod troubleshooting assistant:
    If you haven't already done so, try the steps in the iPod Troubleshooting Assistant (choose your iPod model from the list).
    If the issue remains after following your iPod's troubleshooting assistant, follow the steps below.
    2. Restart the iPod Service
    3. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service
    4. Empty your Temp directory and restart
    5. Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed
    6. Change your iPod's drive letter
    7. Remove and reinstall iTunes
