ITunes won't launch on Win 7

I'm having this problem, as of Nov 5nd, 2009, at 3am, when a Windows 7 update installed. I'm running Win 7 Pro x64, that I've been running for 2+months (technet+ subscription) with no issues w/ iTunes. This is the first problem I've had. I'll try to launch it, and it will come up saying "iTunes has stopped working" almost immediately. I've tried reinstalling/repairing/complete uninstalls, nothing fixes it..

I've tried replacing or updating the WINMM.DLL but it's not corrupt. I'm shying away from a wipe, so any advice would be great. I've reinstalled (including full clean wipes of apple software) with no luck.
Quicktime launches with no problems as well.

Okay, DirectX is fine, QuickTime is fine. The dll in question appears to have tested out fine.
We'd better check quickly to see if this is a systemwide crash or if it is limited to a single user account. This is not in itself a cure, but it will point us towards possible causes, and rule out a bunch of other ones.
From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
Open "Add or remove user accounts" (If using the Classic View in Windows Vista, open "User Accounts". Then open "Manage another account").
Select "Create a new account" and follow the instructions to complete the account setup process. (Give the new account full administrative rights.)
Once the new account is created, choose Log Off from the Start menu.
Log into the newly created user account.
Now try launching iTunes again. Do you get the same crash in the new account, or (eventually) does iTunes open to a blank library? (Don't worry about it being blank, your music is safely tucked away in your usual user account.)

    Does your quicktime work perfectly? I got that message when I tried to open iTunes 5 a couple times, and my quicktime wasn't being sensed by the computer at all. It was just there.

    The first thing I'd suggest is to get a good antispyware checker and give it a go at your system. Some recent spyware has been reported by other users to shut down iTunes or prevent it from launching. From user reports, Ewido seems to be the best at catching it. You can download a free version of Ewido here.
    If that doesn't cure the problem, try deleting the iTunes preference files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    and
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Data\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find them. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.) Delete them or if you want to be able to put them back if it doesn't help, drag them to some other location. This will force iTunes to run the setup assistant the next time you launch iTunes. Note that you'll have to go back and set any preferences you've changed from the default.
    If that still doesn't work, try this:

    If so, let's try installing a QuickTime 7.7 for Leopard using a .dmg installer downloaded from the Apple website:

    Seems like i have the same problem as a lot of people.

    One thing i noticed is that when it freezes and i open task manager to close it down it says 32 bit next to itunes not 64 bit?

    This is a user-to-user troubleshooting forum. Folks come here to troubleshoot their problems. So we, quite naturally assume that's what you were trying to do, and reply to try to help you fix it. The reason why you see so many people here saying there are problems is that this is where people come if they have problems and want to fix them.
    If you believe the problem is all at Apple's end, and would like to register a sort of complaint with them (rather than do any troubleshooting of your problem), then it makes a heck of a lot more sense to contact Apple directly via the product feedback pages.     I just downloaded the new iTunes upgrade onto my Macbook, and now iTunes won't launch. It just bounces once and then does nothing.     Get rid of Norton's, it's far more trouble than it's worth. This is exactly the kind of thing that happens when you run Disk Doctor or the other parts of the suite, and is why they got out of the Utilities market for the Mac.
    1. Try repair Permissions with Disk Utility
    2. Try Trash the com.apple.iTunes.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder
    3. Try Re-install iTunes. Move the app from the Applications Folder to the Trash, then go to HD / Library / Receipts and trash any pkg file there with iTunes in the name.

    itunes used to work fine under Windows 7. Recently it stopped responding. It won't launch. I can see that the processes are running, in Task Manager. But iTunes never opens.
    I have tried a dozen ideas from hardware review forums and I have done all that the Apple site suggests here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1717.
    I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes 64 bit  and Quicktime and removed and re-installed the Apple Application Support.
    Nothing so far has changed anything.
    Can anyone help me find out why this is happening and how to correct it?

    In recent times, the error-message-free iTunes and QuickTime launch failures have been indicating that another application has stashed old QuickTime componentry in your system files.
    So just in case we'll go looking for older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
    First we'll need to change some view settings.
    In your Start menu, open Computer.
    In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
    In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
    Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "SysWOW64" folder.
    What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

    I had to reinstall Snow Leopard after my finder disappeared (I'm assuming some corruption to finder but who knows).  Anyhow, I've spent all day re-installing Snow Leopard and bringing it back up to 10.6.6.  Many of my third party apps needed to be re-installed as did major apps like FM Pro 11.  But the Apple app. that won't launch is iTunes 10.4.1.  Anybody with any thoughts on why this is happening and how I can resolve it?  Thank you.

    I re-verified permissions, shut down and removed all power (inc battery)- restarted and itunes started when launched from doc. I don't know what the difference was, but it seems to be working.
