ITunes won't open, but opens under other users.

I've tried re-installing it and it still doesn't work. I tried it under a guest user and it opened. However, under my administrator user account it fails to open. Any ideas? Oh, also I've tried starting it in Safe Mode or whatever and it still didn't work.

You've tried the isolation steps in this article, now you should try the User-specific troubleshooting suggestions.
User-specific troubleshooting
If your issue only happens in one particular user account, some of the suggestions below may resolve the issue. Before proceeding however, you'll need to make hidden files and folder visible in Windows. Follow steps 1-5 in iTunes for Windows in Windows Vista doesn't open after upgrading.
Remove iTunes Preference files
Some of the files that iTunes uses to store settings and preferences may be unusable and cause issues. iTunes has two folders where preferences are saved. Move one of them to the desktop and test to see if the issue persists. If it does, move it back and remove the second folder. The location for the two preference folders are:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes
Create a new iTunes Library
Hold the Shift key while opening iTunes. You will be prompted to Choose iTunes Library.
Choose Create Library to create a new one. In the following window you will be prompted to select a location to save the new iTunes Library.
Click Save. iTunes will open the newly created library. After closing iTunes, you can always select the original library by using the Shift key when opening iTunes.
Recreate your iTunes Library
If you iTunes library has become unusable, rebuilding it as described in How to recreate your iTunes Library and Playlists may resolve the issue.
Check for content files with issues
Sometimes a certain audio file can cause iTunes to quit unexpectedly or stop responding when it is analyzing gapless playback information. To determine which file(s) may be cause the issue follow the steps below:
Quit iTunes.
Navigate to the iTunes folder:
Windows Vista - C:\users\username\Music\iTunes
Windows 7 - C:\users\username\My Music\iTunes
Move the iTunes Library.itl file to your desktop
Open iTunes. You should not see any content in iTunes.
From the File menu, choose Add Folder to Library.
Navigate to the folder where your music is located. Typically this is
Windows Vista - C:\users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
Windows 7 - C:\users\username\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
Note: This folder may be called iTunes Music if it was created with iTunes 8 or earlier. Choose an artist, album, or single song to add the to the library
Wait for iTunes to successfully add the songs to your library and perform the gapless playback scan.
If successful, continue adding back more songs to your library.
If there is an issue with one of your files, you will notice your issue reappear after you attempt to add it to the library. At this point you should repeat these steps being careful not to add the files that cause the issue to occur.

  • ITunes won't open on other user

I can run itunes on the user account that I installed it on, but when I try to run it on another user, it says "itunes has encountered an error and needs to close" before it opens. Both accounts have admin privileges, and were created at the time of XP reinstall (I reinstalled XP Home 2 days ago and formatted the HDD). I checked the help topics on this "User-specific" matter, but the solutions referred to the 'Apple Computer' folder in the 'Application Data' folder of the user, but of course, since itunes has never run on this user account, they do not exist.
    Thanks,
    James

I can run itunes on the user account that I installed it on, but when I try to run it on another user, it says "itunes has encountered an error and needs to close" before it opens.
hmmmm. how does QuickTime behave in the account that itunes is crashing in, James? does it launch fine, or do you get an error message when you try to launch it?

  • PowerPoint file won't open under one user account, but does under another account

    Hello,
I have a 10.9.5 macbook pro here that will not open a Powerpoint file under one user account. It is up-to-date with Software updates and Office 2008 is up-to-date as well. When I try to open the PowerPoint file, I get the message, "PowerPoint closed unexpectedly" and I can choose to Reopen (which opens a blank presentation) or OK (which closes PowrPoint). I have tried double-clicking the file from the Desktop where is resides, File --> Open from within PowerPoint and also saved it to a flash drive and tried opening from there. It does open under the admin account on the same machine and it will also open on other machines. Other PowerPoint files are opening fine...it's just a problem with the one file. The user has Read & Write privilege to the file. I tried Repairing Disk Permissions, I have tried deleting microsoft plist files, and lastly, have re-installed Office 2008. At this point, I can only think to try deleting the user account and re-adding it, but wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before I go that route.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • FCP v4.5 Won't open under certain user

Yesterday, one of our G5 machines quit loading FCP, but only under a specific user. Others users can still run FCP, no problem.
I have deleted the FCP preference files from his home folder to no avail.
    Any advice?
    Thanks

how did you trash prefs ... did you get all of them?
you need to trash 4 files:
    com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
then inside another subfolder called "Final Cut Pro
    User Data"
    Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs
Final Cut Pro 5.0 Obj Cache
Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prof Cache
there is also a apple knowledgebase article about
    this process (for FCP4.5)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93832
    ... or use FCP Rescue
but maybe you did that already, in which case you
could try trashing the whole Preferences folder in
that users Library folder ... of course that means
the user will have to reset prefs for their account
    and all their applications
    good luck
    Andy
I just deleted both FCP directories within the users home dir, then I deleted the com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist file as well (yes, I backed them up first).
I'm assuming in my case these should be:
    Final Cut Pro 4.5 Prefs
Final Cut Pro 4.5 Obj Cache
Final Cut Pro 4.5 Prof Cache
    I'll check it.

  • IPhoto won't open for other users on MacBook

I'm using a MacBook with OSX 10.9. My account purchased iPhoto some time ago, and it appears to work well in my account. Other users of the machine would like to use it too.  Unfortunately, when they attempt to open iPhoto, The App Store opens instead and the user is prompted for their Apple ID.  Not matter what Apple ID is (successfully) entered, including the one used to originally purchase this application (I think), a message dialog appears that says:
Update Unavailable with This Apple ID
This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.
Switching back to my own account on this same MacBook, I can open and run iPhoto without issue.
I don't particularly want my wife's photo collection and mine to be in the same place, nor does she.

Back up all data. Delete the application and reinstall it by downloading from your Purchases list. If you have copies of any older version, delete those too.

  • Apps and movies won't open under my old itunes msn id, but the newer iCloud id presents no problem. i've reset the phone a number of times. is there away to get all my previous purchases from my old account transfered to the newer iCloud account?

i now have three Apple Store accounts. The first was when I signed up for mobileMe ending in "me." The second ending in "msn" And now the third ending in,"icloud"
The first two seemed to be linked and i would get notifications to update even when i wasn't signed into that account. All the apps downloaded worked just fine on my Iphone4  whether they were downloaded using my iphone or whether they were downloaded from my macbook pro no matter which account they were downloaded from. Now since i started using icloud and after a number of restores my Apple id under "msn" downloads on the apps and my movies all purchased from itunes won't open up. All the other id's apps open up just fine. I've reinstalled itunes, deleted all the apps under the msn account and tried to redownload on both my iphone and my laptop but, no sucess.
I think the only way to get the apps that i've paid for previously is the see if itunes could move my previous purchases from one account, "msn", to my "icloud" account. has anyone else had a problem like this and how can I makethis happen?

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple - I've asked the hosts to remove your email addresses from your post (it's not a good idea to post personal info on any public forum).
Is the old account a completely different iTunes account, or is it just a previous primary email address on the same account ? If it's a different account then all content that you download from the store is tied to the account that downloaded it, so only that old account will be able to download updates to its apps.
If it's the same account, just a previous primary email address, then what id shows at the bottom of the Featured tab in the App Store app on your phone ? You could try tapping on that and log out of it and then log back in with the updated version and see what id then shows for updates.

Am trying to download a ringtone to my iphone 5, but app button on itunes won't open when phone synced to PC. Anyone have ideas about this? Jimbo

Did you try reinstalling the app and contacting the developer (there should be a contact link on the app's description page in the store) ? If you don't get a reply from the developer then you could try
'report a problem' link from the purchase history on your computer's iTunes instead of on your iPad : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that song and use the 'Report a Problem' link (iTunes support should reply within, I think, 24 to 48 hours).
Some people have had a problem with the 'report a problem' link (it's been taking people to this site on a browser instead of showing a form in iTunes) - if it does that to you then try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page.

I ran an itunes update, but now itunes won't open as it says it hasn't been installed correctly. How do I reinstall it?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • ITunes won't open (this isn't an idiot question)

When I first got my iPod mini, I set everything up the way I wanted it and iTunes would open every time I plugged my iPod in. It was beautiful. Now, even though I didn't change anything to my knowledge, iTunes won't open when I plug my iPod into my computer--instead the folder for my contacts and calender opens as if I'm plugging in an external harddrive, and not my iPod. I never told Windows or iTunes to do that, and I still have the "Open iTunes when this iPod is attached" option selected. I've reselected it twice already hoping it was just a fluke, but no luck. I have to close that stupid folder that comes up, manually open iTunes, and even then iTunes takes a minute to realize I have an iPod attached.
I already searched the support pages, and I couldn't find anything. Maybe someone here can help me?

Hmmmm... I had this happen a while ago with an older version of iTunes and the iPod firmware. I was able to fix it after re-installing iTunes and updating the firmware. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling the iPod in the Windows Device Manager.
With the iPod connected, right-click on My Computer and select "Properties". Go to the "Hardware" tab and click on "Device Manager". Find the iPod in the device listing ("Apple iPod USB Device" under "Disk drives" if you're using the USB connection), right click on it, and select "Uninstall" Tell Windows that you really do want to uninstall the device, and disconnect the iPod after it's fininshed. Then reconnect the iPod. Windows should recognize it as a new device and automatically install it. If it says you need to restart, do so.
That might fix the problem (windows will treat the iPod as a new device and remove whatever settings are currently opening the folder and making iTunes not launch).
