Itunes won't open on a new MacBook

I just completed my Time Machine installation on a new MacBook Pro from a backup from my old MacBook. Everything is working fine except that when I open Itunes, it keeps quitting unexpectedly and never opens up. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi, I had exactly the same issue when I was setting up my new MBP a few weeks ago.
Have you updated all the software on your new macbook pro? I spent hours and hours trying things like re-transferring etc, and eventually tried checking for software updates. After that it worked fine. I think there was an update for itunes or genius or something. (It's a shame they don't suggest this in the troubleshooting section of the manual - would have saved me a lot of time!)

  • My iTunes won't open on the new ios7

my iTunes won't open with the new iOS7. it will start to open then crash.

    Hi Kori,
Close all apps: Double click on the Home button, then swipe up on the mini screens displayed above each open app.
Reset your device (nothing will be lost): Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Silver Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the Home screen redisplays, see if your iTunes will open.

  • FCE won't open on my new MacBook Pro - says I need a Quartz Extreme Card

I just bought a new MacBook Pro Laptop, and since I was having lots of hardware and software related problems with my old one, I clean installed everything rather than transferring things through archive.
Anyhow, I was initially able to register and install FCE from the original disk and then downloaded and installed all available upgrades. I opened it up, tried "Log and Transfer" to upload some video I'd shot on my Canon Vixia HFS10, and it worked fine. I saved and closed, but now, next morning when I tried to open FCE to edit my video it wouldn't open. A "Minimum System Check" came up that said "This system does not meet the following minimum requirements: Final Cut Express requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme Capable Video Card." I'm pretty sure that my NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT cards meet the requirements and that Final Cut Express just doesn't recognize that they are much better than the minimum requirements it is programmed to look for. How can I fix this? I saw another thread on a similar topic suggesting that someone delete their FCE, and then perform a clean install, but that's effectively what I've just gone through, and I'm not in the mood to spend a couple of hours seeing if the same thing I just did fixes the problem I have now. This seems like something that would be an easy programming fix, probably a simple modification to a preferences file, but I wonder if anyone out there has the solution?

No, I have FCE 4 - should have said that - and it worked on my older Intel based MacBook Pro.
As it turns out, though, I think I've solved the problem, adapting a solution to a related problem I found on MacRumors.com. Don't know why this is necessary, but here's the solution I tried:
    1. right click on the FCE application icon and select "Show Package Contents"
    2. open the "Contents" folder and then open the "info.plist" folder in Text Edit
    3. find the line that says: "<key>AELMinimumQuartzExtremeCapable</key>," and replace it with "<key>AELMinimumGeForceCapable</key>", and then make sure that the next line says "<string></string>" without any number specified. Or, if you have some other kind of graphics card that you know is compatible, you could say what that is instead of GeForce. I found it doesn't work just to delete this line completely.
Again, I don't know why Apple didn't build in this flexibility when they updated their standard Graphics cards, but in any case this solution seems to work.

  • Appleworks 5.0.3 documents ( OS 9) won't open on my new MacBook (OS 10.4.8)

I have appleworks5.0.3 documents written on an old iMac, on OS 9.2.1. To be able to access them and continue to use appleworks on my new MacBook, which operates on OS 10.4.8, what is the best way to transfer the data? I have tried installing appleworks 5.0.3 on the MacBook, and updating both computers with newer appleworks downloads, for appleworks 5.0.4, and 6.2.9. When I attempt to open a document on theMacBook, however, I get the error message; Can't import the document / unable to translate the document. Could someone walk me through the steps?
Another option is that I could translate the appleworks documents into Microsoft office 2004, which I like and is on the MacBook. Any advice?
    Thank you

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
AppleWorks 5 will not run on your MacBook. AppleWorks 5 is an OS 9 or earlier program & Intel Macs can't use Classic. Your best bet to open all of those AppleWorks 5 documents is to buy AppleWorks 6. You cannot update AppleWorks 5 to AppleWorks 6, you must purchase AppleWorks 6. For inexpensive options to buy AppleWorks 6, try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac is selling AppleWorks 6.2.4 for a reasonable price. You do need to made sure the version of AppleWorks 6 is 6.2 or higher. Earlier versions require OS 8 or 9 to install, so you'd be right back where you started.
I think it would be worth waiting until after Steve Jobs' keynote address at Macworld tomorrow to make a decision. It's possible that at new version of iWork will be announced & it may have more features &/or applications that will be able to open more AppleWorks files although I doubt that it would open any AppleWorks 5 files. Neither Pages 1 (iWork '05) or Pages 2 (iWork '06) are able to open any AppleWorks files other than AppleWorks 6 word processing.
If they are only word processing or spreadsheet documents, you can use icWord & icExcel from Panergy Software to open them. They could then be saved in a format another program you have can open. Check the features list for each on on Panergy's web site.

  • Itunes won't open because of newer version

When I try to open my itunes it sits there like it is loading up then a message appears saying "The file 'itunes library' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes." what does this mean and why can't i open my itunes why?

This error prevents iTunes from launching. The library file was modified to work with the newer iTunes version, so it is no longer compatible with the previous version. The good news, however, is that Apple does backup the iTunes library file into a subdirectory that you can use to revert back to the previous version.
To recover a previous version of the iTunes Library.itl file, use the following steps:
Open up your My Documents\My Music folder.
We will first backup the current version. Rename iTunes Library.itl to something like iTunes Library.itl.bak.
Go into the My Documents\My Music\Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
You may see several files that start with iTunes Library and have a date included in the name. Copy the newest file in the folder.
Go back to the My Documents\My Music and paste the file from the previous step.
Rename the new copied file to iTunes Library.itl.
Your library should now be restored to the previous version of iTunes, and you should no longer receive the message.

  • ITunes won't open after update; MacBook Pro, Mac OSX 10.6.8, iTunes version 11.1.5

iTunes won't open after update - help, please; MacBook Pro, Mac OSX 10.6.8, iTunes version 11.1.5.

i had a problem similar to yours and better yet, i have the fix for it. i downloaded maverick 4 months ago and was without itunes ever since. all itunes icon did was bounce. itunes would never open and whats more, is when i would try to update it, i would get a "thank you for downloading itunes!" page , but the download would never work. so i scoured the net for solves. nothing that worked. <4 months later> then last night i took a new approach. i decided even though maverick would not allow me to uninstall itunes, i would find a way to uninstall itunes. then i would reinstall back to 11.1.5 i was successful and heres what i did.
    step one-
Back up your iTunes Library.itl file, found under ~/Music/iTunes
(even tho i didnt, i only had 3 artists in there at the time. and they didnt get erased but i advise you back up just in case.)
    step two-
download itunes 10.7 from apple. i used this link Download it from Apple here
(i pulled the link from Aarons website (awesometast.com). you download 10.7 however you want but i used the link above and have had no issues).
although im not sure you need to do this step ( you may be able to download 11.1.5 itunes without 10.7, i did because i was following intructions from http://awesometoast.com/downgrading-to-itunes-10-7-from-itunes-11-on-osx/
    step 3-
    open Terminal
    step 4-
enter in these 3 commands hitting return after each line. 1st line nothing seems to happen, 2nd line nothing seems to happen and 3rd line gives you a warning and requires password to continue. when i did it, my password didnt appear as i entered it and i hit return without looking, so i entered it in again, although im not sure i had to the 2nd time.
    killall iTunes
    killall "iTunes Helper"
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/
    step 5-
drag off and dump the itunes icon (which now has the ? shadow in it) off your dock.
    step 6-
install 10.7 itunes you downloaded earlier. (not sure if this part is neccesary. you may be able to just download 11.1.5 but i downloaded 10.7 because i was following Aarons steps.) itunes now works.
    step 7-
go to apple and update to 11.1.5 itunes. install it. open it and you have itunes 11.1.5 in perfect working order. assuming you have a decent internet speed for the downloads, the whole process takes very little time.
with those steps above, you can solve itunes just bouncing and not launching issues and also the "thank you for downloading" and nothing downloads issue. enjoy. also i would like to give a shout out to http://awesometoast.com and thank Aaron for the knowledge that enabled me to get itunes back into my life.

  • ITunes won't open after downloading software update.  Macbook Pro OSX10.6.8  Simple solution?

iTunes won't open after downloading software update.  Macbook Pro OSX10.6.8  Simple solution?  And by the way, this is apparently a common problem and Apple has completely failed to warn in advance or offer a quick straightforward solution - used to be a good company, but it's becoming just another crappy screw-the-consumer corporation.

It would help to know versions here.  I'm guessing your update put an older version of something into a place where a newer version of something iTunes put in there existed.  Updating an earlier OSX version to 10.6.8 is still only updating to system software that was issued several years ago.  If you are running some slightly newer version of iTunes issued subsequent to 10.6.8 and you just updated to 10.6.8 you may have put in an older version of something iTunes uses.  Anyway, I'm guessing here until we know exactly what you did.

  • TS1717 My Itunes won't open and I am getting message "the file "iTunes Library .itl" cannot be ready because it was created by a newer version of iTunes".  Any suggestions?

My iTunes won't open and I am getting message "the file iTunes library .itl"cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.  Anyone have a suggestion?

I don't know why this error occurs, unless you have attempted to downgrade iTunes.
This method should get you up and running again.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

    Not recognising my iphone 4s.

I did so and now the itunes will not open saying "Error: New Itunes Library' WHY?!? This is really frustrating me!!
    Thanks.

There are a few things you could try,but what worked for me was to download a fresh installation file from apple.
Your update got corrupted somehow. Doing the usual of going to control panel, clicking on Programs and Features, clicking on iTunes in the list and selecting REPAIR probably won't fix this issue, as sometimes repair reverts the installation to its previous version and then your iTunes Library.itl file can't open because it's from a newer version than the one REPAIR reinstalled. You can try that process, but I doubt it will work.
Do not change any files and/or their existing locations. Also, do not uninstall iTunes from your machine. Simply go to Apple's web site and download their latest version suitable for your particular computer. Once downloaded, double click the installer and follow the prompts. You should be able to launch itunes afterward, and your library will magically re-appear.
Again, DO NOT uninstall the old version, and do not rename, remove and/or replace any of the original files prior to installing the latest version over what's already on your machine. Good luck!

  • .itl file is locked error after installing new build - iTunes won't open

After upgrading to the new build itunes won't open. I receive an error message "The iTunes Library .itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file." When I check permissions I have full control. I tried uninstalling all apple components - iTunes, Quicktime, apple updater - rebooting and then reinstalling but the same error message comes up when I try to start itunes.

Even after uninstalling the .itl file remained in my itunes music folder. I deleted this file after uninstalling again and then reinstalled and the issue was resolved.
