ITunes Won't Play Anything

iTunes (6.0.4.2) was working fine last week but this morning it won't play ANY files or even the sample tracks from albums streamed from the iTunes Music Store.
iTunes Update works fine for searching/downloading podcasts.
But, when I select any item in my Library, a downloaded podcast, or a iTMS sample track, and click on the play button (the right-pointing triangle) nothing plays. The button flickers momentarily but instead of the stop/pause button (vertical lines) button appearing, the play button is still showing. The name and duration information shows in the progress window at the top of iTunes but it too does not show that the item is playing. Last but not least, no sound comes out of my computer.
The only thing I can think of that changed from last week is that the Microsoft installer updated six items this morning. One of them included an update for Windows Media Player.
I've re-booted several times and all my other software seems to work fine.
Only iTunes isn't working.
I have uninstalled/downloaded/installed iTunes from Apple's website but the symptoms do not change.
What can I do to troubleshoot/fix this so I can listen to my podcasts!?!
Thank you in advance for your help.

IBM ThinkPad T42   Windows XP Pro   SP 2 with most recent updates; 1.5 GB RAM

I uninstalled/installed QuickTime as you suggested and there were no error messages on either. To verify that the installation completed successfully, I played a movie trailer from Apple's website. The audio was fine but there was no sound. And, of course, there was no sound in iTunes.
Then I realized that the Windows startup/shutdown sounds weren't playing either so my problem is system-wide, not just a iTunes or QT problem.
I looked at Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices Properties and saw that no devices are listed in the "Sound Playback" device list. So, I guess that for some reason, WinXP isn't recognizing the sound capabilities built into the motherboard of my ThinkPad. I looked at the Device Manager and the Event Viewer and can't see anything obviously wrong.
I'm now in the process of downloading driver updates from IBM's ThinkPad support website.
For now, at least, I'm stuck with a dumb laptop...literally!
Any suggestions/links for how to troubleshoot/fix my sound problem would be most appreciated.
Thank you very much.

  • Quicktime and iTunes won't play anything, require computer restart.

Since installing Lion and the latest iTunes, I cannot consistently play songs or videos in iTunes (or Quicktime, for that matter). I hit the play button and it changes to a pause button, but the file doesn't progress past 0:00. I try pausing and restarting the song (or movie) and it doesn't play. This occurs both with songs on my computer and in previews from the iTunes Store. Restarting my iMac seems to fix it, but the problem returns after a period of use. Quitting and restarting iTunes does not fix the problem.
It seems that I need to reinstall Quicktime and/or iTunes (not sure how), but I'm open to other suggestions. Any help would be appreciated.

    jmaybee,
You need to go get a program called Pacifist 3.2.2 (it's shareware but you can use it for free - I cannot say enough of how great this program is, it has saved my skin more times than I can count)
    http://www.charlessoft.com
Then get the Snow Leopard disk that came with your system and put it in the optical drive and let it mount.
Using Pacifist, use the "Open Apple Install Discs" button, select the Snow Leopard disk and let it read the package installers. This may take some time, as it's got to read the DVD and pull up all the installer .pkg files..
When Pacifist is done, you'll see something that looks like this:
    http://home.comcast.net/~foodandart/MacForums/PacifistSnowLeopardQT.jpg
Dig down into the installer packages thusly:
    Contents of OSInstall.mpkg
       Contents of EssentialSystemSoftware
          Contents of EssentialSystemSoftwareGroup
             Contents of Essentials.pkg
                Applications
                   QuickTime Player.app
Select the QuickTime player to highlight it, then you just hit the large arrow at the upper left corner of the Pacifist window (sorry for my black Snow Leopard scheme making things hard to see) and it will ask you if you are certain and also to backup files (why? they're gone already!) and it will install the QuickTime Player to the default location in your Applications folder.
I *just* tried this with my own system and tossed my original copy of QTX on the Desktop and the new install works perfect.
    There you go..
    Regards,
    Deb.

  • ITunes won't play in Windows 8.1...help!

I just updated my computer from Window's 8 to 8.1 and now iTunes won't play anything at all. I can open up the iTunes store and everything else, but once I click on a song it will show that it is playing but nothing happens. I even tried moving "QTMovieWin.dll" from  c:\program files (x86)\common files\apple\apple application support\  to  c:\program files (x86)\iTunes but nothing happened after I did that. Is there anything else that can be done to fix this problem? Thanks!

I have searched high and low for the right solution for this issue.  I'm on an HP Envy laptop, running iTunes 12, and just upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I tried the settings for bit rate as suggested above and it still didn't work, but I did solve the problem.
In iTunes I went to Preferences > Playback > Play Audio Using ... and changed the setting from "Direct Sound" to "Windows Audio Session"
Now my iTunes on my laptop works!

This can close the post...I have no idea what was corrected, but I deleted itunes, the remaining itunes music folder and waited a week. I reinstalled it this week and it now works.
    Go figure!

  • My itunes does not play anything anymore

Itunes won't play anything anymore, wether it is in the cloud, from the store or even from my computer. It shows the song in the window but no sound and the timer does not move from 0:00

    Hello KarolineSG,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It seems like iTunes on your Mac is not playing songs at all, and the play counter is stuck at 0:00.
You can find some troubleshooting tips for this situation in the following article:
iTunes 11 for Mac: If you have trouble playing music or other audio
Most of the steps in this article can help with both iTunes 11 and 12.
    All the best,

  • All of a sudden, my iTunes won't play music.

All of a sudden my iTunes won't play anything in the store or my library. Updates are done and my windows computer is authorized. It has worked fine in the past and then all of a sudden, I click play and nothing plays. I can play music and video in other programs except itunes. Volume is up also. It won't play at all. Any suggestions???

    I would suggest first,
looking for the files (not in iTunes but on the desktop. If you find the files they've simply been removed from iTunes. - If you can't find the files they've been erased and there's not a lot that can be done.
Removing files from and iPod is another question. Firstly, it IS difficult, but it can be done. There are numerous tutorials on the web on how to do it.
    Regards,
    Peter.

  • I am using versio 11.1. of iTunes. I created several radio stations. My "Outlaw Country" worked for a few songs. But now it won't play anything.

I am using versio 11.1. of iTunes. I created several radio stations. My "Outlaw Country" worked for a few songs. But now it won't play anything.

I'm having exactly the same problem, with this station only. Anyone?

  • ITunes won't play quicktime videos on Mac anymore.

    I'm using 10.7.3
    iTunes 10.6
    MacBook Pro 2.6Ghz 4GB ram
iTunes won't play my video anymore and it's been a while I'm not sure when it occured if it's after an update to snow leopard or iTunes updates...
When I double click a video I get "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes." ??
...and cannot convert the option doesn't work I get this other message when trying to convert a version for APPLE TV in advanced menu "None of the selected files were converted because they could not be found."??
But the movies are quicktime movies in my library and the MPEG-4 plays in iTunes but not on APPLE TV.
From all my videos I get one only going through APPLE TV and when I try opening it it says error occured why opening and never works??
It seems APPLE is regularly messing things up in updates to loose people so they have to pay for tech support, I didn't upgrade to iPhoto 11 and cannot import anything anymore into it so my entire library is a dead one ; not a cool way to do business than messing people software so they have to buy newer versions!!!
Any specialists that know how to fix this ??

The 32-bit solution has never, I repeat, never worked for me.  I've even done a full reinstall on a clean drive of OSX Lion with a fresh install of iTunes downloading a video of "The Big Bang Theory" that just came out this last thursday and still get the error (just finished the full reinstall to a clean drive now and, no, I didn't do any backup restores.)
The only solution I've found is to remove the video from iTunes, without deleting the file, then import the file back into iTunes.
Switching to 32-bit iTunes to run the file causes iTunes to tell me it needs to open iTunes to play the file then it sits and waits for itself to open until I cancel the process.  The video then plays without audio.
I have noticed that I can stream the files to my Apple TV to play even while getting the error trying to play them on the computer I downloaded the files onto.
As a result of this error, I've had to reduce the amount of content I purchase from iTunes.  no more buying whole seasons at a time unless I do it at the start of the season.  Even then, I'm reconsidering it.  The amount of work required to get the files into a playable status on the computer is simply too great on an on-going basis.

  • ITunes won't play audio with mp4 or mov video

I have wasted many frustrating hours now trying to get iTunes to play mp4 and mov videos but can't get any sound. A few months back it was working fine. Tried ALL the suggested fixes like uninstalling, updating and checking all the MIME/File boxes. When I went back to QT 7.5 and played the files independently of iTunes everything was fine. Quicktime  7.6, 7.67 & 7.7.1 do not play the audio independently or under iTunes and of course iTunes won't play video with QT less than 7.7.1. The same mp4 videos uploaded to my iPOD work fine. I currently have iTunes 10.5.3.3 installed on a Windows XP SP3 on an e-machines pc. Ideas please!!

I got this problem as well. Seems as soon as I moved to version 7.6 it stopped playing my video audio. My music plays fine, but my video audio is non-existant. It's not the file itself because I can play off my iPod (though not off my iPod through iTunes) just fine. I've done all the suggestions above and NOTHING has worked. Is there anything else we can find???

  • Why is Lion so slow?  Everything takes 2-3X as long as before and iTunes won't play most of my movies.

Got Lion.  Now, opening a movie with Quicktime takes 10 seconds, opening ANY application takes twice as long as before, and iTunes won't play most of my movies that used to play in previous versions of iTunes.  I'm frustrated.  Even the web is markedly slower with pages taking 5-6 seconds to load up (and they are simple pages sans videos).
What gives?  Any solutions?  Anyone having similar issues?
The ONLY thing that took less time was Disk Utility...it ran in 4 minutes when it used to take 7--8 minutes.

Lion is much more demanding on memory.  It is almost unusable on my computers that have 2 gig of memory. On the macbook air I am typing this from, it is using 1.5 Gig of memory out of 2 gig. Anything like playing a movie is going to be quite compromised.  SL used about 400 MB for normal low-demand operations.  The memory is soldered on in this laptop, so I am screwed, but it is fairly cheap and easy to add memory to most others.  OWC is a good place to look.  Max it out.  I think your iMac can take 6 GB.

  • Moved Library from one Mac to another. iTunes won't play tracks in order.

    Hi
I moved all my iTunes music from my Mac Pro to my MacBook Pro by simply moving the "iTunes" folder from one to the other. There wasn't anything in the MacBook Pro iTunes folder so I just deleted it and replaced it with the one from my Mac Pro.
However although all looks just right in the iTunes browser when I open it up, unfortunately iTunes won't play the tracks in order.
If I play a track on one album when it comes to the end of that, it doesn't continue with the next track on that album, but rather skips to the first track of a later album.
I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for how I might remedy this?

I don't use it, no.  I've been reading about it recently, and it was an example of where the quality of a Song can change if it is downloaded from iTunes Match.
I've used Home Sharing though, as follows:
    1. Copy music from CD to iTunes on Windows PC
    2. Transfer music from Windows PC to iMac using Home Sharing
I do this becasue the iMac doesn't have a optical drive.  I haven't checked to see if the quality has changed, but I assume it just copies the files so it wouldn't make sense if the quality had changed.

  • Sound not working & iTunes won't play & Netflix error

Sometimes my sound stops working, and songs on iTunes won't play when this happens. Also if I try to watch Netflix an error message comes up: "Netflix Playback Error N8157 3140" and it says it could have something to do with my Silverlight plugin.
    This is what it says:
The error you're seeing is related to the Silverlight plugin, which Netflix uses to play movies and TV shows on your computer.
This error is usually caused by one of two things:
A computer setting preventing Silverlight from storing files it needs to play your movie or TV show
An issue with the Silverlight plugin itself
To fix this error, follow the steps below for your Windows or Mac computer.
    Reinstall your audio card drivers
Your audio card drivers may be out of date or corrupt.
Uninstall and reinstall your audio card driver. Your owner's manual or audio card manufacturer's website can help.
However, I have tried deleting and reinstalling silverlight, but it doesn't make a difference. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? It only happens sometimes, other times I have no problems and it works fine.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Silverlight
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • ITunes won't play ANY of my music!

When I select a song and press the spacebar or click the song or whatever, iTunes won't PLAY IT. The timer comes up like it's gonna play but it never starts counting. The icon to select pause comes up instead of the icon to select play in the top left corner. EVERYTHING about iTunes is working correctly up until the second that you expect the sound to come out. You know the little speaker icon next to the song? You know how it shows little lines that represent sound coming out of it when it begins playing a song? Even THAT works. It's just that the little time keeper across the top doesn't scroll across the song! My speakers work fine. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it. I've restarted the computer and shut it down! I checked the preferences menu. I can burn CDs still. Like I said, everything in iTunes is working fine except for the fact that the songs don't play. The files are still there. HELP! THis is driving me nuts. It wasn't working in 10.4.6 and it's still not working in 10.4.7. I've done every update...NOTHING!
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am having the exact same problem. I have updated both the system and iTunes. I have an mBox whose driver I have reinstalled (although I knew that wouldn't really make a difference to iTunes NOT playing).
    I'm stumped.
    Zapped PRAM.
Repaired permissions - they didn't need it.
    Help!

  • ITunes no longer plays anything

i have the new verion of iTunes and it was working fine for a while but now when i push play it acts like it is going to play something but then nothing happens. i can push forward and back and it will change songs but still doesn't play. radio won't play either and neither will the song clips in the store. i uninstalled and reinstalled and still nothing. help?

Ok, then let's capture your system configuration information and send it to the Apple engineers.
Windows Start menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Run. Type in "dxdiag", click OK. In the lower right hand corner of the dialog that comes up, there is a button called "Save All Information...". Click that and save it. It's a text file, so you can open it and make sure it's not sending any personal information.
You need to send that file to our buddy Roy, <[email protected]>. Make sure that you include:
    (1) the dxdiag file.
    (2) the link to this thread.
    (3) a one line description of your problem, i.e. "iTunes won't play audio".
    (4) the username that you're using here in the discussion boards.
    (5) what was the previous version of iTunes that you updated to 7.5 from.
Roy is getting a little swamped with messages and needs to make sure he gets all the information. And if he doesn't get that information, the message is just going to get dropped on the floor.
