ITunes won't play my music files now

When I open up iTunes, it will no longer play any of the music files in my library. When I click on any song in my library, the file appears in the area at the top of the window where the song-in-play usually appears. However, it does not start; the little diamond does not progress through the song. The iPod however plays everything fine. I have a PC with Windows XP and have been told that it could be my drivers. I am lost as to what I need to do here. Can anyone please help?
Forever grateful for any help,
Greg

Well anything is better than version 7. It was totally unusable.
7.1 is an improvement but songs cut out for me. The dialio thingy shows that it's still playing, just no sound. I pause it and restart, the song continues. Sometimes this will happen three times in a row then not for several minutes. There also seems to be a clicking sound every now and then as well.
Yes I've tried switching it between 24 and 16 bit, no difference.
It's a shame as I really enjoy using itunes. I think Apple should stop using work experience kids to program their windows products. I was considering buying an Apple until this itunes debacle.

  • ITunes 10.5 Won't Play wav Music Files

I installed iTunes 10.5.0.142 on Windows 7 64, SP1 and I can no longer play wav music files which have been in my library from the beginning. I have a mirror Windows 7 client that has iTunes 10.4 installed and it still plays the wav music files. My iTunes library is on a Seagate BlackArmor NAS device, so both clients are accessing the same music files. The problem is that iTunes 10.5 refuses to play the wav files, but iTunes 10.4 and all previous releases of iTunes played them without issue. Could someone advise on how to solve this problem, or is this a defect with iTunes 10.5? I  downloaded and installed iTunes 10.5 for Win on October 11th.
Also, after installing iTunes 10.5, I synchronized my iTunes library on my iPhone. The wav files play fine on the iPhone, but not on my Win 7 client with iTunes 10.5.
    Thanks for your help.

I just downloaded and installed iTunes 10.5.1.42 and all of my problems have been solved.
    All audio books now play
    All wav files play
Tinny sound reported by others seems much improved with this update
The updated version of iTunes launches much faster on Win 7 64bit SP1The download and update for 10.5.1.42 ran smoothly and the install/upgrade worked the first time.
    Thanks to all who helped.

  • ITunes will not play all music files in music folder

My iTunes music folder is on an external HD. I have 4662 songs in the folder. iTunes plays approx. half of the files though the all of the songs show up in the iTunes player window. When I try to play a "lost" file, nothing happens, no "!" nor window telling me it can't find the file. When I go to the file and click on the song, iTunes adds another copy to the iTunes player window and plays the song. Recently, I clicked on all 2000 songs to get them to play and deleted the copies that didn't. The songs that won't play won't download to my pod. When I finished clicking on files and deleting copies, I updated my pod.
When I shut down the computer, it lost all the changes and it is back where I started! I connected my pod and it deleted all the songs that iTunes won't play. Any suggestions?

    WiseBird,
There might be several causes for that kind of erratic behaviour:
1st use Disk Utility to check your internal disk as well as the external one.
2nd Your Library database might be damaged
    - Quit iTunes
    - Goto ./Users/YourUserName/Music/iTunes
There will 2 files named something "Library" - move them to your desktop
    - Launch iTunes
As you're now starting from scratch, iTunes will offer to search for audio tracks - Don't let it.
    - Your iTunes should be "clean"
    - in iTunes Preferences - Advanced - General:
Point the Music Folder Location to the appropriate folder on your ext hd
Disable "Copy Files to iTunes music folder....."
    - Quit Preferences
    - From iTunes Menu - File choose "Add to library..." + select that folder on your ext hd that contains all your tracks.
    - All your tracks should be back by now in iTunes Library.
    - To get your playlists back: From iTunes Menu - File choose "Import" and open that .xml file that you moved to your desktop (might work but need not).

  • ITunes won't recognise my music files!

Hey everyone- I've loaded all my music files and old iTunes library onto my new computer and in the itunes music folder. However when i go to listen to a song iTunes says that it cannot find the song, or the folder has been moved and would i like to locate it...? Can anyone help me here? All my playlists are sitting there looking at me but they won't play any music!!!!!
Any help would be much appreciated!
    cheers,
    ed

I am also having the same problem. In an effort to try and consolidate, I recently placed all of my existing music folders under or in a newly created folder entitled Kenny's Music. Upon attemting to play my music after that, the music is coming up unable to locate.
I have all of my music under an external hard drive and I even changed the settings in my Itunes settings to F:ItunesKenny's.
I can get idividual songs to play by going through eight or nine steps - clicking on a song, a window coming up asking me if I want to locate the song, indicating yes, going to the F drive, clicking on itunes music, kenny's music, locating the artist, highlighing the song and then it will play.
I have over 6400 songs and I don't want to go through that entire process for each song. I have previously utilized the file, add folder to library option. All that did was to double the overall number of songs from 6400 to 8800. However, my old songs would still not play. Please help.

  • ITunes won't play my music unless it's on shuffle

My ITunes will only play my music (from one song to the next without stopping) if it's on shuffle. This is even if the songs are checked. Otherwise, I have to go back each song and click the next song. I'm on a Mac OSX 10.8.5 (desktop) and MAC OSX 10.9.5 (laptop). Is there an answer to this?

Try to go through this check list http://www.copytrans.net/helpcopytrans.php#22 it's pretty complete.

My external Iomega Firewire 160gig HD, all of a sudden, changed the drive letter from H to F with unknown format.
I recovered music files ( Using Stellar Phoenix FAT)and files/folders are in iTunes but only 20-30 play (out of over 6,000)
I can play CD and rip new music in iTunes, though.

  • Itunes won't play my music stored on my external harddrive

My pc recently had to be wiped and everything reinstalled due to a virus and before doing this I copied my itunes to my external harddrive, without realsing itunes would not then locate the files after. I have now reopened everything through itunes and all my music is there however it cannot locate the files automatically and every time I switch my pc on I have to manually show it where they are. How can I get itunes to find them again? Tried all the methods I have found on the internet so far but none work!! I am now not sure where the files originally were as tried to change preferences so itunes looks for them in my external harddrive. I know the music is all there and can all play but don't know how to match my files to itunes?? Can anyone help??

I saw your post and I am hoping that you were able to resolve your problem. I am having the smae problem and I have tried everything. Did you have any luck? Please let me know if you figured it out... Thanks

  • ITunes won't play .mov QuickTime files anymore

My hard drive crashed two weeks ago and it has been replaced and almost all of the information was salvaged--thank god!
However, now in iTunes when I go to play a movie that previously played in iTunes, it says that the file requires QuickTime and that it is not supported by this version of iTunes.
I have over 9,000 movies in my iTunes MOVIES section that are of various formats (none are flv or avi, as I don't think iTunes has ever played those).  I've never had trouble playing mov, mp4, m4v, mpg files before.  Is this likely a problem with my reinstall of iTunes or is it that the latest version of iTunes has limited parameters than prior versions?
Thanks for any imput.  I'd really like to be able to play all of my movies in iTunes like I could before.
    Chad

I'm sorry that I have no solution to offer, but I also have noticed that several video files with the .mov extension that used to play just fine will no longer play in either the current QuickTime Player or in the older QT Pro Player 7. I have no idea what changed.

  • ITunes won't play my music. Help!

I recently uninstalled quicktime. That seemed to make my iTunes stop working. But I've reinstalled it and it still doesn't work. I also uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes itself and it STILL won't play my songs. Any suggestions?
    HP   Windows XP

iTunes and quicktime are a bundled thing, iTunes uses parts of quicktime in the background to play audio and video. Try uninstalling iTunes AND quicktime, then download the latest iTunes from apple.com Disable your antivirus and install it (Installing iTunes installs quicktime too). Doing this is to make sure both iTunes and quicktime are current and up to date.
If it still will not play music, see if the progress bar is moving while it plays a song, even tho you hear no sound. Try going to, in windows, control panel>quicktime>audio tab and make sure "Safemode" is checked.

  • ITunes won't play my music properly!

Can anyone help? iTunes plays my music like a scratched CD, i have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes 6 but it doesn't help. Any advice?

    hi Amanda!
let's start by working through this document. if you've got an itunes version 5.0.x or 6.0.x, you'll need to try adjusting the QT 7 settings.

  • ITunes won't play my music.

I've looked through the related articles posted here on the Apple website, but none of it helped.
iTunes used to work for me, no problem whatsoever - suddenly, out of the blue, one day when I was going to listen to music, it wouldn't play.
I double click on a song, but the diamond doesn't move, and the play button remains a play button no matter how many times I press it. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes plenty of times. Still, it doesn't work.
Another thing is, in the iTunes Store all the pictures are black. I think it has to do with Quicktime, because when I trried to open Quicktime a few minutes ago, my computer reads the following:
    Buffer overrun detected!
    Program C:\Program FileQuicktime\QuicktimePlayer.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.
I've tried to download Quicktime from here, but it just gives me an iTunes+Quicktime download, which is what I already have.
Can anybody help me? I'ma little computer impaired, so, excuse my slowness if I don't understood you at first.
Thank you for the help, if any.

  • ITunes won't keep my music file names

I'm trying to add some music from some old CDs to my iTunes. When I import the music from the CDs they are all names Track 01, Track 02, etc....I renamed them in the file folder (I organize my music outside of iTunes) and then wanted to add them to iTunes. However, when I open the music with iTunes, iTunes does not keep the new names, it changes them back to Track 01, etc...
So, for example, when I open my music folder, the first song is Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata.
When I click on this file to open it with iTunes, iTunes lists this as Track 01.
Is there a way to get iTunes to used the names I have given to the music in the file folders? Or do I have to rename them all in iTunes itself?

Ok this is very frustrating for everyone who's experienced this. You'll have to go to each file and right-click, then click properties, then change the song name, artist name, album name, etc.

  • ITunes won't play my music in library or in store?

Suddenly today I logged on my computer and wanted to listen to music. However, when I hit play, nothing happens.  It shows it's "playing" a song, but the sound doesn't play and the time bar doesn't actually move.  I wondered if it was just limited to my library but when I go into the store and try to hear synopses of songs, it doesn't let me do that either.  How frustrating!  I downloaded the newest update thinking it was probably that, but after the update it is still the same.  Anyone know what gives? Any help is appreciated!!

    Sorry about the delay.
I don't have a Vista PC in front of me. (The noir household(s) Vista box is in North Carolina.) The way the audio control panels work in Vista is different from XP, so there's significant limits to how far I can walk you through detailed troubleshooting here.
But one thing has sprung to mind as being worth a shot.
Go "Start > Control Panel". If your control panels are in category view, click on Classic View. Launch the QuickTime control panel, go to the Audio tab.
In there, check "Safe mode (waveOut only)", and click OK. Restart iTunes if you had it open.
Do songs play if you have safe mode engaged?

  • I paid for and downloaded a song, but it won't play saying the file could not be found. It says this even when I click on the song IN the itunes store, so I can't even listen to the sample now??

I haven't kept records of the songs I have paid for, and a number of songs have recently been displaying this message, making me search my computer for them. Most I have been able to find, but this one immediately "disappeared" the moment I attempted to play it after downloading...... how do I either get it back or get my money back???

How did you do this move?  Unless you know what you are doing you have to move the whole, complete iTunes folder.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • I upgraded to the latest iTunes 10.2.2.12 and now it won't play any music. I can do everything else, except play music. I'm on Windows 7. Any ideas?

I upgraded to the latest iTunes 10.2.2.12 and now it won't play any music. I can do everything else, except play music. I'm on Windows 7. Any ideas?

i had this problem and finally figured it out. all that you need to do is go to your start menu and click on computer. select your main drive, (local drive) c usually. Next open the users file follow by your user name file, which is just like it sound it is a file labled as whatever your name is as you have it on your computer. Then you open up the AppData file. Next open the Roaming file. After that open the Apple Computer file followed by the iTunes file. Now you should see the folder labled iTunes Plug-ins folder. Now just Delete that folder. After that go to your iTunes and play your music.
If for some reason you don't see the AppData file you need to go to the upper left of your screen on select organize. a drop down menu will appear and you need to select folder and searc options. a small folder options window will appear. in this window you need to select the view tab. you need to select the show hidden files, folders, and drives bubble. now hit apply and then ok. that will allow the AppData folder to be seen.
