ITunes won't play through Airport Express

I have my stereo connected to the Airport Express via optical cable.  I can Airplay from my iPhone to the AE, but for some reason iTunes running on my MBP won't Airplay to the AE.  The AE is listed as a remote speaker option, but when i select it, nothing happens.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

.  Short answer: No.
.  Long answer: I've been going back and forth with Dan Hill ([email protected]) and his best suggestion so far (port fowarding the known itunes ports to the server's static IP Port Forwarding iTunes on the Ubee U10C022-Ambit - PortForward.com) of course didn't work because the streaming and handshaking for connecting to the remotes doesn't go out or in through the router. I'm not playing this over the WAN just a subset of my LAN.
.  Since this all worked behind the AT&T Uverse Router 3800HGV-B but stopped behind the Ubee DDW3611, that's the presumed culprit.
.  When time permits, my next two tests are to rearrange the network so the AP Extreme is DHCP host and firewall and the DDW3611 is only a bridge, and then to crash the mini back to 10.6 if all else fails, since the other two computers work fine.
.  I also talked with Emilio at the LaCantera Apple Genius Bar. Couldn't set up a similar problem there (they have a trunk line to AT&T) and no new hints.
.  Problem is beyond the control I have in the Time Warner Cable (TWC) bridge and Lion has also removed many controls.
Idiot proofing downfall: the idiot is behind the locked door.

  • After iTunes update, cannot play through Airport Express

I've had this problem a few times.
You've updated iTunes and you can see your remote speaker(s) within the program, but when you attempt to stream to them, you'll get an error saying that there was a probelm connecting to your remote speakers. No amount of resetting or reconfiguring your Airports will fix it. Don't waste your time doing that.
A good check to show that your network \ airport is healthy, is if you have an iPod Touch you can stream right from there to your Airport Express. That will let you know that the problem lies somewhere on your computer.
You are most likely having this problem because of the Windows Firewall. A quick check is to disable your Windows Firewall, then launch iTunes and try to stream. If that works, you've found your problem. Reenable your firewall.
.....But wait. I checked my allowable programs, and iTunes.exe is allowed to pass? What gives? Well, the firewall is trying to make the console simple, and only lists the program as itunes.exe. Apparently, the firewall is looking at much more than just the process ID of itunes.exe. When the rule was set up, it likely also identified the allowable process by noting the time\date stamp or a hash of the file. During your upgrade, the filename stays the same, but the rest changes, and the windows firewall won't allow it to pass.
To fix this, delete the existing rule allowing itunes.exe to pass. Once that's done, you can recreate the rule using your new itunes.exe file. Now that it's allowing your new .exe to pass through the firewall, you can now play to your remote speakers again. Yeah, you don't HAVE to delete the old one, but it's a lot cleaner. If you don't delete the old, you won't know which is the "good" one if you ever have to troubleshoot at a later date.
I hope this helps. It drove me a touch nuts for a bit until I realized what was going on. Now it's part of my routine whenever I update iTunes.

iTunes does recognize presence of Airport Express (named "Stereo Cabinet").
However, when I select "Stereo Cabinet" in the pulldown menu, all I get is reduced volume output through my computer speakers... not through the stereo system hooked up the to the Airport Express.
I've had this problem for months... posted here some time ago, but got no response.
I am running 10.6.2 on an Intel Core duo Macbook laptop. This function used to work just fine, and I can't figure out why it no longer does. I think I had the same trouble under 10.5... but my attempts to figure it out were only sporadic (busy life, you know?).
    Can anyone help?

sorry if i ask the obvious but have you enabled airtunes like so ?

  • ITunes won't play via Airport Express when connected to VPN

Once connected to VPN iTunes just won't work but still plays on my computer. I believe it has something to do with the firewall but I do not know how to get around it. Can anyone help? I would love to listen to music via my stereo speakers while doing work...Thanks!

  • ITunes on TimeCapsule wireless-N; how to play through Airport Express-G

I just bought a Time Capsule. It is connected via ethernet to my ADSL2+ modem/router. I set it up so the TimeCapsule would create a new wireless-N network. This works; I can connect to this N network with my MacBook and to the G network with my iMac G4 and G3.
What I would like to do:
Put my iTunes library on my TimeCapsule (or a connected usb-drive)
Use that library wirelessly on my iMac G4 (wifi-G) and on my MacBook (wifi-N)
play the music wirelessly on my Airport Express (G) from one of these computers
How do I connect the Airport Express to do this? It's now extending my wireless G network
I guess it's not possible to use the TimeCapsule in WirelessN (5 Ghz) mode only this way? (would cause less interference)
Is it possible to hook the Airport Express to the time capsule with an ethernet cable to turn it into a wireless N Airtunes player? (music from my MacBook to the TimeCapsule through ethernet-cable to the airport express to my stereo )
lot's of questions. Hope there's a network specialist to answer them!

I have indeed attached my AX and TimeCapsule in bridged mode now after help from the Apple helpdesk. The TC through ethernet to my Linksys modem/router with DHCP-server and the AX wirelessly to the TC. The TC is in B/G compatible N mode. This way I can connect all of my computers to my TC so they can see each other. The wireless-mode of the Linksys is now left unused. In order to use N-only 5 Ghz on my TC all of my macs and AX would have to be wireless-N capable (or connected by ethernet of course so maybe I'm going to cable connect my desktop computers and AX to my TC). Don't know if Airtunes will be able to use the TC as wifi-N receiver so that it can then send music to the AX by ethernet cable.

  • How do i get non-iTunes audio (like Spotify) to play through airport express?

I'm trying to play Spotify through my stereo using airport express.  I've looked around and saw Airfoil, Airplay, Porthole... but I'm confused as to what I should get.
    MacBook early 2008- 10.7.5
I have an airport extreme too, it's not currently connected, but it could be.

Airfoil will work and it's free to try.
Native system audio streaming support to an AirPort Express is incorporated in newer model Macs and OS X versions, and I don't recall what its minimum system requirements are. Check System Preferences > Sound. Your Express's remote speakers will either appear as a sound output option, or not. If it does you don't need anything else.

  • I just connected a new airport express to my stereo but the itunes on my desktop mac isn't version 4.6 and every attempt to download the newer version only ends up downloading 4.1. How do i get my desktop itunes to play through airport express?

Why doesn't my airport express work with itunes 4.1 and why can't I update the version I have to 4.6? Each time I find a site with 4.6 and click download it downloads as the earleir 4.1 version and not the newer one.

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • ITunes won't play through 2nd gen AE 802.11n

Just purchased Logitech Z323 speakers.  Plugged correct wire into Airport Express 802.11n (2nd gen).  Unable to play iTunes through the Logitech speakers plugged into the AE.  Have searched the Discussions and googled high and low and can't get any traction.  Asking for anyone's help, thank you!  :-)

Finally found the Apple article on this.  Had not seen the info to go into Airport Utility, select the AX, click Edit, select AirPlay tab.   Enter an AirPlay Speakers password, confirm the password.   I then quit iTunes, relaunched iTunes.
A new icon appeared at the top-left-middle of iTunes window.  It looks like an envelope with an up-arrow within the envelope.  Here is where you can select the AirPlay speakers attached to your AX as the speakers you wish to play music through.
I then went to my iPhone 4S, opened Music and began to play a song.  At the bottom of the iPhone screen, to the right of the volume control slidebar, is the same envelope-with-up-arrow icon that appears now in iTunes on my laptop.  Select the envelope-arrow, and select the Airplay Speakers.   That allows playing music from iPhone through the speakers attached to the Airport Express.

  • Video Streaming in Windows media player won't play through Airport Extreme

Hello and thank you for reading my issue.
I have the current square shaped airport extreme base station. My mother has a Windows XP system on her Toshiba laptop and she takes an online class which has video streaming for the lectures. When we connect to the network wirelessly or with an ethernet cable through the base station, the video will not begin to buffer and won't play from the website. It just states ready and doesn't buffer. However, if we connect the laptop straight to our cable modem without the base station, the videos stream and play perfectly. Anybody know how we can fix this to play through the wireless network? Thanks a lot.
MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've played with all sorts of software settings and configurations. This is what worked for me, but I'm not sure how it would work for anyone else, or if the issues are even related, but here goes.
1 - Turn multicast rate to 1 MBPS in the drop down menu found in Airport Utility>Airport icon>Wireless Options Button.
2 - Turn off multicast in Windows Media Player or Real Player
3 - Turn on Video Overlay Optimization check box in Real Player.
These things worked for me, hopefully they will help or give you some ideas for your own situtation.

  • No speaker menu in iTunes for streaming music through Airport Express

    I have the following setup:
I connect through the Internet using a Zyxel 660-R61 router acting as DHCP server. Next in line is an Airport Extreme running in bridge mode taking care of wireless Internet access. I have then added an Airport Express in client mode to the wireless network in order to stream music to my stereo. Although both Airports look "happy" (green lights) no speaker menu shows up in iTunes. I have done all types of resets etc. I suspect the problem lies in the ADSL router somehow. Anybody out there with ideas?

I'm sure that you have done this already, but if not...
Open the AirPort Admin Utility, located in /Applications/Utilities.
Click Music in the toolbar, and select the Enable AirTunes checkbox.
Enter an iTunes speaker name and password. This is the name displayed in the pop-up menu at the bottom of the iTunes window.

  • PC based iTunes And multi play with Airport Express device and a Marantz CR-603

I have iTunes on my PC and use the iPad as my 'remote' as I want to be able to have two different systems playing. I have a Cyrus Hi Fi in the lounge with  Airport Express added which works fine, and a Marantz CR 603 system in the kitchen which also works fine, when either is sourced from the iPad. When I switch to remote for multi-play using the PC I can't get the PC to identify the Marantz AND the Airport Express together. The PC just can't pick up the Marantz, even though it works fine from the iPad. The PC can see the Airport Express and, of course, itself. The system uses a hard wired Ethernet from the hub to the Marantz. Everything else is operating via wireless. Help!?

    I found a solution!
Quit iTunes, restart the "Bonjour Service", start iTunes, done! :-)
    best regards,
    ullala :-)

  • ITunes 12.1 won't play through bluetooth speakers

Ever since the latest iTunes update (12.1.0.71 64 bit), my music from iTunes won’t play through my bluetooth speaker connected to my laptop. Every other sound the computer makes plays through the speakers while iTunes plays through the laptop’s built in speakers. The speakers are also set as the default audio device for the computer. There aren’t any options in the iTunes preferences that would allow me to choose an audio device to play music through.
**My iTunes is operating on a Windows laptop and the bluetooth speakers are JBL if this helps, but everything was working fine until this new update**

There is an alternative version for 64-bit editions of Windows here:
iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
that seems to address the most of the playback issues that some users have been reporting with the full 64-bit version of 12.1.0.77 - including problems with Bluetooth speakers where either sound is degraded or completely absent.  The alternative installer here is the same architecture as most previous "64-bit" versions of iTunes, i.e., a 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer.  The "for older video cards" label appears to be something of a misnomer as some people have reported that this corrects problems found on current / high-spec systems.
Some users have reported that after installing this alternative version it is necessary to adjust the "Play audio using" selection (normally to "Direct Sound" rather than "Windows Audio Session", though this may vary based on your audio hardware/drivers) in Edit > Preferences > Playback to restore glitch-free audio - one part of the reported symptoms is that the "Direct Sound" choice isn't available, usually in Windows 8.  It may also be necessary to ensure that your Bluetooth speakers are active and selected as the default audio device before you run iTunes.
If this doesn't address the issue, you may want to think about reverting to iTunes 12.0 - see Turingtest2's notes on Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for steps needed to completely remove all installed iTunes components, and for links to the 12.0 installers.

  • ITunes not playing/connecting through Airport Express

Whenever I try to play a track in iTunes wirelessly through my Airport express iTunes always returns the error: "An error occured while connecting to the remote speaker "AirPort Express" The network connection failed".
I can't work out what's wrong because the Airport light is green and connected to my router perfectly, there are no errors in the Airport utility and I can print wirelessly to the printer connected to the Airport using the Bonjour setup.
I have Windows 7 and the latest versions of all software and firmware installed. Turning off Windows firewall makes no difference so it can't be that. I have tried everything I can possibly think of and have gottem nowhere. Please help!

  • Is there a way to play my macs computer audio through airport express?

I have a stereo receiver that only plays through the auxillary port, and i have been using airport express to play my music and movies in itunes through it. Some of my other movies however are neither in itunes or playable through itunes. Is there a way to send the computer's audio output (not just itunes) through airport express and thus into the stereo receiver? Much help would be appreciated, thanks!

    Try using Airfoil.

  • Itunes 11.2.1 won't airplay with airport express!!

Itunes 11.2.1 on 10.7.5 will not connect and play music through airport express.
Doesn't this render the airport express 'not as described' and therefore not 'fit for purpose'
I do wish apple would remember people who they owe their reputation to and concentrate on making reliable software again and end this relentless fight to make a better smartphone!
I do hope there is a fix for this because I'm ringing trading standards tomorrow!

The same goes for iTunes 11.2.1 on 10.9.3. And it's not the first time, either. In fact, I've lost count of the number of times a software update has broken Airplay. It's immensely frustrating. If past experience is anything to go by, they'll fix it in a few months' time but until then there's nothing we can do about it. Unless someone can tell me I'm wrong?

  • ITunes 11.1 won't connect to AirPort Express

    Hello,
I just updated iTunes to ver. 11.1.0.126 from the previous version of 11.0.5.  Prior to this, everything worked fine, no issues ever with connecting to my airport express from iTunes.  Now that I've updated to 11.1 I get the following message when selecting my AirPort express for streaming:
"An error occurred while connecting to the AirPlay Device 'CasaWalck AirPort Express'. The network connection failed"
The AirPort express is a bit older... an 802.11g, running the latest version firmware 6.3 and it's still attatching to my AT&T Uverse wireless home network just fine.  Went into the router admin to verify all is well, and it is.
At the end of the day, it seems to be the iTunes update that caused all of this.  I should also add that with the iTunes update, I also installed iCoud (which I didn't have installed before) and the latest version of Quicktime.
    I'm running
    - Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 on an HP tower.
    - AT&T Uverse wireles modem w/WPA2-PSK (AES) encryption
    - Netgear WNA1100 USB WiFi modem
    - Apple AirPort Express 802.11g w/firmware 6.3
Any help is greatly appreciated.  I really want to get my streaming to work again!

Okay, I'm logging this for anyone who might be experiencing the same issue.  I kept poking around my system until I found the solution myself.
In researching this issue, I kept coming across folks who found an issue involving their Mac systems. Since I have a Windows 7 platform that didn't do anything for me.  Initially I started suspecting an IPv6 compatability issue between iTunes 11.1 and my old airport express.  Found nothing fruitful there (including this so you don't waste your time chasing that down).  The other common theme coming up with others was their firewall.  I came across on thread in particular where if they disabled thier firewall, they got iTunes to connect to their airport express/airplay device again.  However, they were stuck with a choice between this working and having firewall protection.  I personally just couldn't operate without a firewall. So... I kept poking around and literally stumbled on the solution.
    Windows 7:
Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Allow a Program or Feature Through Windows Firewall > Change Settings:
    - click to highlight iTunes from the list
    - click Remove
    - click Allow Another Program...
    - Select iTunes from the list and click Add
    - Click OK so save your settings.
    - Test your connection AirPlay/AirPort Express in iTunes. It should work
    - Restart your machine and test to make sure it still works after a reboot.  Mine did.
From what I can gather, the previous installation of iTunes logged some sort of profile or entry into the Windows firewall.  Once iTunes upated to 11.1, it seems whatever worked for the 11.0.5 install was no longer compatable.  By remiving and reinstalling this entry in the firewall, whatever was needed was refreshed and all is well with the world again.
For all the times this community has helped me out, I only hope I can return the favor.
    John
