ITunes Won't Quit And Appears Corrupted

When I quit itunes it restarts again with the dot under the itunes logo but the iTunes window doesn't open until I click the icon on the dock.  Also in the middle of the size value in the size column the value starts with a number then in place of a decimal point I see a reverse video "?" then the rest of the number.  Also the files will not alphabetize correctly no matter which column I choose to alphabetize.  The program seems to work erratic and sluggish as well.  The way I fix it is to restart the machine but this doesn't always work.  Even after I get iTunes to display and work correctly and it's sitting open the problem described above will reoccur.  I think a file like a PLIST is corrupted and am willing to trash it if I knew which file so long as I don't lose all the time I've sent in getting the right artwork and building playlists.  I've been using this wounded iTunes program for a couple months now and am getting really frustrated with it.  Any suggestions to fix it?
Thanks In Advance For Your Help!

Looks like I figured out the answer to my problem.  I've been using the Logitech squeezebox products on my network.  With their squeezebox server program that is installed on the mac they grab the location of the iTunes library to stream the music to the various squeezeboxes on the network.  My corruption problem with my iTunes library coinsided with installing the latest version of the Logitech squeezebox server 7.7.1.  While my iTunes library was acting up so were my squeezeboxes.  They would quit playing the music or has long delays before playing.  Checking on the Logitech forums they reccommend when experiencing problems after an update to do a clean install deleting all the old Logitech files sprinkled throughout the hard drive.  After doing so the  my squeezeboxes started working again.  I also noticed my iTunes library was no longer corrupted.
I will continue using the squeezebox products because they are, and I have a hard time saying this, better than the Apple Expresses or anything else Apple has created with regard to streaming.  They really shine when you buy the iPeng iOS app that will let you stream your music library to your idevice not just on your local network but anywhere around the world wherever you have an internet connection!
Remember on the 3G network this will eat away quickly at your data plan allowances.
Hope this helps

  • HT1222 iTunes won't quit and won't allow the computer to be shut down

Does this update fix the fact that once iTunes is launched I can no longer quit the program (it automatically restarts) and it won't let me shut down the computer (or force quit) or restart. This problem just started. Once launched, you can't quit iTunes and you can't shut down your computer. You can't install software or perform any function that requires iTunes to be closed. I have searched the web and have found other users with the same issue but no real solutions (or reasons why it is happening). It is weird that iTunes has a mind of its own and can just cancel shut down or restart. It immediately relaunches if you force quit. I no longer can listen to my music because I am afraid to launch iTunes! I was able to choose restart once and then shut down from the restart screen the first time it happened but after that it would not even let me restart. Once it worked by logging out user and shutting down from that screen but then the next time it wouldn't allow it. It is like it learns how you are working around iTunes to shut down your computer and then it figures out how to cancel it. Eerie and annoying. Any ideas? I should say that I am running an iMac with OS 10.6.8. Thanks.

  • ITunes won't quit - who can help?

I running iTunes v8.0.2 on a Mac Pro 3Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 4MB Ram, 200Mb spare space on 500 Mb HD drive, plus extra drives. Now I find iTunes won't quit, and won't Force Quit. It closes and reopens. Shut down and reboot doesn't solve it. I have researched various similar threads but am not running the applications/widgets mentioned. I do have a first generation iPhone to sync - and that seems to sync ok. Only recent changes have been to migrate to a newer MacBook Pro over the Xmas period and start cloud computing to sync to the Mac Pro/iPhone. Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a fix? Anyone got any ideas I can try?

    Hi Andrew,
Does iTunes quit correctly when using an alternate iTunes library(on the internal drive)? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
Have you installed any plug-ins or add-ons for an earlier version of iTunes? If you have try removing them as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22611
Does iTunes quit correctly in another user account?
If the issue persists in another user account and the primary account after pulling the plug-ins, try completely removing iTunes as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224

  • TS1717 My Itunes won't open and I am getting message "the file "iTunes Library .itl" cannot be ready because it was created by a newer version of iTunes".  Any suggestions?

My iTunes won't open and I am getting message "the file iTunes library .itl"cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.  Anyone have a suggestion?

I don't know why this error occurs, unless you have attempted to downgrade iTunes.
This method should get you up and running again.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • When iTunes won't quit

I was having a problem where iTunes would not quit and stay quit. Even Force quit would only work for a second or two, then iTunes would restart. I tried several suggestions here, but none of them worked. Instead when I googled "iTunes won't quit" I found an answer on the blog The Mac Track (http://themactrack.com/2008/05/27/tip-if-itunes-wont-quit)
He suggested opening the activity monitor then quitting the process genredetection.
When I went to the activity monitor, I saw I had two genredetection processes operating. I stopped both of them. iTunes went back to normal.
The blogger's source of the process was iWow. I don't have that, and don't know which application generated the process on my computer. I do now know how to fix the results.
I thought I would pass this on for others.

Excellent tip, thank you! I quit all the helper processes "orbiting" iTunes, but when all the usual suspects were already quit and I was out of ideas, going on a genredetection massacre did the trick!

  • Safari is unresponsive and appears corrupted. How can it be reloaded?

Safari is unresponsive and appears corrupted. How can it be reloaded?
When my computer starts up and I open Safari, it reopens in a "stuck" print mode.  While that can be canceled, Safari is then unresponive.  I can't "Quit" as the option is grayed out.  It appears to be semi-stuck in some process.  It's necessary to "Force Quit" although it's not listed as "non-responsive".

Delete the corrupted file from your machine and see if the App Store will let you download a fresh one.

  • ITUNES WON'T OPEN AND GIVES AN ERROR MESSAGE HELP

my iTunes won't open, and instead pops up a window saying:
"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occured (-200)."
Something similar to this is happening with my mac DVD player. When I try to open that, it won't open and says:
"There was an initialization error. The audio output device could not be found. Please make sure speakers or an appropriate output device is connected. [-70027]"
doesn't come in to handy when you are about to watch a new episode of Lost .
anyway, I saw the speaker thing and went online. Any sound online (music, popups) can all make sounds - so my computer isnt permanetly muted. I've also restarted my computer, done the system updates, and gone into system prefereces to mess around with the volume. The computer recognizes the internal speakers. HELP!

    Hey,
Here are the steps that should help:
    1. Close all applications.
    2. Go into the Finder>Home>Library>Preferences
    3. Delete 'com.apple.iDVD.plist' and 'com.apple.iTunes.plist'
    4. Restart Immediatley.
    This should work. Cheers, Ricky.

Hello anyone with Windows 7, not sure why having followed instructions above, install of latest version of itunes won't work and can no longer open old version either.  anyone help with this?

    Hi,
    thanks for your reply.
Yes, except n°1 - empty Temp directory, I had tried/checked all of those.
I emptied the local temp folder tonight, but it still won't work.
Please note: the installation doesn't give me any problem. The program was working fine, until at one point *plouf* it stopped working. I can re-install it without any problem, it just crashes when opening.
\\edit\\ I seem to have located the problem, it's in the library files. If I re-install iTunes without my library, it works fine (though there is no music in it, yet). As soon as I import my library, or replace the My Music\iTunes folder with the old one, it stops working.

  • With the latest update of iTunes the download quits and gives me and error code of 2324

With the latest update of iTunes the download quits and gives me and error code of 2324. what do I do now? As iTunes wont open up.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
