Itunes won't read cds

I just installed Itunes on my Dell Latitude (Xp). When I place a CD in, Itunes opens up, but it doesn't inport the songs. I read through the help section in the software and updated all of the drivers and still NOTHING. Any ideas on why this is happening? Any help would be appreciated folks.

I'm having a similar problem on my Dell Dimension 8200. Itunes won't recognize my CDs though Windows media player reads and plays no problem. Went to Apple site, watched "how to" video on topic, upgraded to version 6 itunes, upgraded firmware for my cd player. CD diagnostics in Itunes sees the cds noting that "Audio CD reading succeeded". Go figure. It WON'T show the tracks and when I go to File - Import a dialog box opens for my drive but no content shows. HELP - I just got three of these for my family but it won't work!

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

  • ITunes won't read ID3 tags that Windows sees

I recently switched my library over from a Mac laptop to a PC desktop. I have about 70 GB of perfectly organized music accumulated over years and years.
In the process, after I loaded some songs into iTunes (using the Keep My iTunes Folder Organized and all that stuff), I noticed that about 10 GB of music were without titles, artists, or album info, and just displayed the name of the MP3 file (so like instead of displaying 15 Step by Radiohead from In Rainbows, Track 1 it displayed "01 15 Step" in the Title column only).
The problem is that when I navigate to these songs in Windows Explorer, not only do I see all of the correct ID3 information, I see the extras like Album Art have loaded perfectly as well. I can play these songs in Windows Media Player and the ID3 info is perfect.
Does anyone know why iTunes won't read these ID3 tags or how to get iTunes to read them?

I am also having the same problem with about 200 of my MP3s. The tag info shows up perfectly using QuickLook on Leopard, but in iTunes I can't see any of the info. I have tried converting the ID3 tag version, revesing the unicode....nothing.
    Have you had any luck?

OS 10.7.5, iTunes 11.0.1, and iOS 6.0.2 ... everything is updated, but iTunes won't read iPhone 5 or iPad as devices. Syncing was easy before recent iTunes update. Suggestions?

Are you using the correct cables.  iPod cables look similar, but are not, as they are 1.1 USB cables, where your iPhone and iPad require a 2.0 USB cable.
Also, make sure you are not plugging your USB cable into a Hub or keyboard USB port, but one directly on the computer.

  • Itunes won't "read" because it was created by a newer version of itunes

I just updated my operating system finally and when I try to open itunes I get : itunes won't "read" because it was created by a newer version of itunes.

This error prevents iTunes from launching. The library file was modified to work with the newer iTunes version, so it is no longer compatible with the previous version. The good news, however, is that Apple does backup the iTunes library file into a subdirectory that you can use to revert back to the previous version.
To recover a previous version of the iTunes Library.itl file, use the following steps:
Open up your My Documents\My Music folder.
We will first backup the current version. Rename iTunes Library.itl to something like iTunes Library.itl.bak.
Go into the My Documents\My Music\Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
You may see several files that start with iTunes Library and have a date included in the name. Copy the newest file in the folder.
Go back to the My Documents\My Music and paste the file from the previous step.
Rename the new copied file to iTunes Library.itl.
Your library should now be restored to the previous version of iTunes, and you should no longer receive the message.

  • Imac won't read Cds

5-yr. old iMac: suddenly won't read CDs. It spits them out after 10-20 seconds with no error message.

    Thanks everybody
I too have suddenly developed this failure to burn. Worked well last week, now doesn't even get to the multiplexing stage, just ejects the blank disk. Ejects original Leopard disk, won't write to CD with Toast 8. Couldn't even check the hardware diagnostic as it just spits the disk out.
Tried Unix single usere mode Command S to type in fsck -y after the prompt localhost# (p840 - The Missing Manual series Leopard) but never got to this prompt. Upgraded to lastest iMovie and iDVD
Tried your FINDER- PREFERENCES - TICKED THEM BUT THEY DON'T SHOW UP IN THE SIDEBAR. . Starting to look ominous. Here I am in the middle of the South Pacific with no Mac repair shop within 3000 km.
OR any other suggestions - may be "life saving" or this iMac is going on a long flight soon or could you send your father-in law.

  • ITunes won't burn CDs anymore...

I've tried several times to burn a CD from iTunes. It used to be fine...it will burn all the way through, then stumble a bit on the final song, taking a few minutes longer than necessary, then it will say it's finished, but when I try to play it, it doesn't work. On iTunes, it will show the little speaker to the left of the song, skipping from one song to the next very fast, but won't ply anything.
    Any help?

  • ITunes won't read ID3 tags

So long story short, I lost my iTunes library and had to re-import all of my songs. Problem is, iTunes isn't reading the ID3 tags correctly, and most of my music has "unknown" under artist, album, etc. Normally, it wouldn't be a big deal to just go through my library and update the information for the tracks manually. But I have a LOT of music, and it would take forever to do so for my entire library. I use iTunes whenever I import CDs or purchase music, so the ID3 tags were all originally created by iTunes itself, which doesn't make any sense. All of the ID3 information (track names, artist, album, etc.) is showing up fine in Explorer and Windows Media Player, so I'm not sure why iTunes isn't recognizing it. Any ideas?

I suspect the tracks have multiple tags which iTunes doesn't cope with. Each mp3 file should have a single ID3v2.3 tag for best results with iTunes. Some software creates both ID3v1 and ID3v2.x tags when creating mp3s. If these are edited with iTunes it may update one tag, but then later read back unchanged data from the other. MediaMonkey has some useful tools for cleaning tags, assuming that is the problem, and you can determine which version needs clearing out. Test with small samples to make sure.

  • 3 beeps from comp. itunes won't read

I plug my 3rd gen. ipod into my Windows XP after not using it for a couple of weeks, I then hear three quick, low beeps from the computer. Then I decide to wait a while and nothing happens, itunes won't pop up. I click on the little USB icon on the bottom right corner and it says that there is an ipod that's plugged in. But, itunes itself won't detect it. PLEASE HELP

I am also having the same problem with about 200 of my MP3s. The tag info shows up perfectly using QuickLook on Leopard, but in iTunes I can't see any of the info. I have tried converting the ID3 tag version, revesing the unicode....nothing.

  • Itunes won't read cd text

I just got a new compouter and downloaded iTunes. When i insert mix cd's that I made on my last computer's iTunes and included cd text it won't read them. Any help so I don't have to manually update thousands of songs?

That particular script was designed to export data from an iTunes library, and then reimport it. The original idea was to use it to restore an old database from the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder, export selected data, restore the original database and then import the saved data. It would also be possible to use it to manipulate the exported data with something like Excel before reimporting. The script relies on the fact that each track can be identified by its unique ID which should normally remain the same as your library is updated over time. For your purpose matching track numbers within the selection of the tracks from a single CD would serve the same function if working one CD at a time. I can't offhand think how I would do automatic CD identification from within a larger database. I suspect MediaMonkey is the easiest way to go.

  • DVD/CD Drive Problem: Works with DVDs, but won't Read CDs

As the title states, my laptop's CD drive will not read CDs (it is a satellite A205 by the way).  The yellow light lights up, it makes noises as if it is trying to read the CD, but just doesn't do it.  It won't show up as a CD being there when I look it up on "computer".  On the other hand, when I put a DVD in, it works no problem.  Anyone have any idea of what I could do?  I've tried uninstalling the driver on device manager and restarting the computer, thus allowing it to reinstall it, and it didn't help.  Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Try cleaning out the drive with compressed air and/or a lens cleaning disk.  This often times helps.
Next try booting to a Linux Live CD or some other Self Booting CD like Memtest.  If it doesn't then you know for sure that the drive itself is defective as you are taking Windows out of the equation.  If it does, then you know it's a Windows problem which will more than likely require restoring the system to it's factory out of box state using the Recovery DIsks to fix.
If the drive works with a Live CD then try going into device manager, uninstall the DVD drive, then reboot the system to have Windows automatically re-install it.  This sometimes helps as well.

  • ITunes won't read my backed up music on CD.

OK so I backed up all 11 gigs of my music 5 or so years ago. I'm trying to play them in iTunes....ok so I insert the disk (CD) and it shows the name of the CD but nothing happens with iTunes (I have it set up to play auto) so I try to add to library it starts but then after processing 13 or so songs it says it can't write or read them or something. I'm.....mad I bought all my music on CD's over thousands of $$$ worth and someone stole them from me 3 years ago now all I have are these mp3's on 13 CD's and iTunes can't read them when they where made by iTunes by me and my bought CD's at that. Someone please tell me there is something I can download to fix this problem? I'm about to loss it a bit. Please help.

How old is the CD drive? Is it the original drive? Old drives can often have problems, especially with burned media. I've seen lots of computers younger than yours that have required replacement optical drives (fortunately a matter of $30). Have you tried reading the files on another computer, hopefully one with a newer drive?
What quality was the media? Cheapo CDs? Poor quality CDs can go bad and are harder for marginal drives to read. Were they stored carefully? Burnable CDs stored in the light can yellow.
You say, "it can't write or read them or something". I understand your frustration but reporting the exact error message is critical to receiving help on a forum like this - we can only work with the information you provide. I suspect it is a read error, and that could be due to a bad drive and/or bad CDs. I have some files backed up on CDs but I always make sure I use archival grade media, and I make two copies.
Try dragging the files from the CD to an actual folder on your computer.
