Itunes won't recognize ipad as a device

iTunes recognises my ipod which is great, it shows under My Devices on the left of iTunes.  But when I plug in my iPad Mini I get an error message saying the device is unknown and to unplug it and plug it in again but that doesn't work.  It won't give any instructions as to how you get iTunes (on the PC) to recognise the iPad.

Which version of Itunes do you have?

Itunes is updated. Recognizes iPhone 5.
My first gen iPad went on the blitz after the update and would kill off after five minutes, no matter if it was fully charged or not. I attempted the obvious restarts and resets. Reset back to factory settings via iTunes. After that it requests to be registered again, however it will not go through. Attempt to hook it to iTunes as suggested but it eventually says iTunes is "Unable to help" and isn't recognized. Attempted the home/off reboot, plug to computer/hold home key, but iTunes does not recognize iPad at all in this state.
I've read that some suggest this is a software issue and that Apple suggests this is a hardware issue. What are my options at this stage? Can this be repaired at all?

  • ITunes won't recognize iPad in Windows 7 64bit

I am posting this in the hope it will help other people who have this problem. I spent 7 months trying to find out why iTunes wouldn't recognize my iPad. The only way it was recognized, is if I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it.Once I turned off my computer, the next day when I turned it back on, it wouldn't recognize the iPad.
A month ago I bought a iPad 2, and I had 3 months of phone support. Nothing the technition suggested worked. We went through all the fixes that are documented in Apple's solution pages. He decided to send it up to the engineers. They asked for me to give them about 4MB of info from my computer from various hidden folders. The engineers told him they noticed I had 5 Malware programs and an antivirus program. Also that my chipset drivers were out of date or misconfigured.
They told him to start by uninstalling each malware and antivirus, one by one, keeping iTunes open, but unpluggin the iPad before uninstalling, to see if it connected. I uninstalled the first one, which is called Super Malware, and it didn't work, then I uninstalled Avast (free, it requires a computer restart after uninstalling, so you have to open iTunes again), and I plugged in the iPad, and voila, it worked.
All that time, Avast was keeping my iPad from being recognized in iTunes. A few Antivirus programs interfere with iOS devices. If you are having trouble, try uninstalling antivirus and malware programs, one by one, to see if they are the culprit. It is time consuming doing it one by one, but it's the only way to find the one that is causing the problems. We never got to the chipset problem, so I don't know if that would help anyone, and you should be careful when playing around with upgrading drivers for chipsets. If you do, make sure you know what you are doing.

Thanks! I had the exact same problem. i'd reinstall iTunes and it would work for a sync or two, then nothing. Uninstalling Avast worked!

  • HT1351 my itunes won't recognize my ipod in devices when I have it connected to my computer? How do I get it to sync? it is a ipod classic

I have a ipod classic and my itunes will not recognize it under devices when I have it plugged into my computer. I have restored the ipod and itunes is up to date on my computer. I have not been able to get my music to sync onto this ipod. Thanks for the help

If the iPod was not recognized by iTunes, how was the Restore performed?
The latest iTunes may hide the sidebar.  This may be confusing to long-time iTunes users.  If you don't see the sidebar on the left side, go up to the menu bar.  Under Views, select Show Sidebar.
With the sidebar visible, do you see the iPod under DEVICES?

  • ITunes won't recognize iPad mini?

Whenever I plug my iPad mini into my PC, the PC will recognize the iPad mini. I can open folders and view files. But the iPad will NOT open in iTunes. I have no way to sync anything.
I've tried restarting the computer and rebooting the iPad. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled itunes. iPad mini is running iOS 7.1.1 so up to date and everything. I'm getting REALLY frustrated over here.

  • ITunes won't recognize any of my devices after latest update.

This is pretty rediculous, none of my devices (iPad and iPod) will show up when connected to iTunes since the last update. They show up fine on my computer, why must I try to figure this out because Apple can't test their stuff before releasing it. I guess once they have our money who cares, they'll just release the newer model next year and everyone will buy it. I've tried for hours and I can't get them to show up.

  • TS3274 Original iPad won't charge, won't update and iTunes won't recognize

I have one of the first generation iPads that won't charge unless it is completely drained of power.  Also if after it shuts off from 0% power ifr any reason it gets turned back on while plugged in, it stops charging and won't continue to charge until the device is completely drained again. Also iTunes won't recognize the device AND it is operating under iOS 5.1.1 and says the software is up to date and won't update at all.  I have tried different plugs, different computers, nothing works.  Is my iPad just too old?

The failure to update isn't an issue. The iPad one is maxed out at 5.1.1.
The other issues may be an issue with the battery, or charging port or software inside. You may want to make an appointment to get it checked out, but even if what's broken is a manufacturer's defect you're outside of any warranty so the most you'll get is the offer of an out of warranty replacement for a fee. might ultimately be cheaper to put that money towards a new device.
Have you tried to give your iPad a reset? Hold down the sleep and home keys until you see the silver apple. Let it reboot and see if that helps.

  • Itunes won't recognize Iphone but device still charges

Today, I had my Iphone 5c replaced after having issues with the software on my previous iphone 5c. I'm trying to put the data that was on my previous phone back onto my new replacement but Itunes won't recognize my device. I have tried getting the data back on my phone using Icloud but the backup data that is for my Iphone can't be selected as the backup data requires software that is ios 7.1 or later (or something like that). I have selected the option of "set up as new iphone" and just downloaded the software update but I don't know how to get back to the screen that shows the icloud backups.
I have also tried all the recommended things for when the device cannot be detected with itunes (ex. reinstalling itunes, restarting apple mobile device support< ect.)
If you can help with how I can get my itunes to recognize my iphone or how i can set up with icloud after selecting "set up as new iphone" that would be great

Set the phone up as a new phone. Then update the iOS to 7.1. After the update is complete restore your phone from your backup.

  • Ipod stuck in recovery, and iTunes won't recognize the device.

My ipod is stuck on restore/ recovery mode, and iTunes won't recognize the device. The computer makes the beep noise saying that somethin is plugged in but itunes won't pick it up. It is iTunes 11.1.1 and i have a 5th generation Ipod touch. Any Help? Thanks (:

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
