ITunes won't recognize iPod (and more)

I'm not sure if this should be in the iTunes section or here, sorry.
I can't get iTunes to recognize my iPod. The iPod shows up in My Computer, so I looked here to try and solve the problem. I got to "Quick Fix" and I couldn't delete the iPod folder because iPodService.exe was still running. I went to Task Manager and tried ending the process, but nothing happened and it still showed up under "Processes". Now I can't even get iTunes to start at all. I've tried restarting my computer and reinstalling iTunes, but iPodService.exe is still screwy and I still can't start iTunes. (But the iPod still shows up in My Computer. Arrrgh.)
Any ideas? This is a mess!

  • Itunes won't recognize iPod after installing MediaMonkey..

    Hi,
I recently switched from Itunes to MediaMonkey, and I'm very happy. But my girlfriend still uses iTunes. And now her iTunes won't recognize neither her or my iPod when I connect either of them. Windows and MediaMonkey recognizes them perfectly. iTunes just comes up with this error message:
"The software necessary to communicate with iPod isn't correctly installed. Install iTunes again before installing iPod-software."
I've tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes a number of times. I even tried uninstalled MediaMonkey, but nothing works..
PLEASE HELP ME, I'M GOING INSANE HERE =(

Have you tried working through the steps in this article, in the order listed?

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod - Extreme frustration!

So iTunes won't recognize my new IPod Video. It works fine with my kids' shuffle, mini and 4th gen but when I connect my new iPod I just get a window with: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the ipod "IPOD". Use the IPOD Software Updater Application to restore the IPOD to factory settings"
I've been trying since Christmas to get this thing working. I've tried the five R's, I've tried every combination of everything suggested on the Apple site, (including posts here) I've tried stuff from other apple users sites. No joy. I just got off the phone with the help rep from Apple. He talked me through the MSCONFIG stuff, no joy still. He told me to go to depot.info.apple.com/ipod and fill out the forms and they'd send me a package to put my iPod in to send them so they could fix it. It's personalized so it'll take an extra 3 weeks to fix. Needless to say, I'm very frustrated and extremely disapointed.
    Merry Christmas.

  • Itunes won't recognize Ipod Classic after update

I updated my Itunes to the most recent version, then when I plugged my Ipod Classic 120gb in, Itunes would not recognize it and erased everything off of it. When I try to sync it the ipod freezes as well as Itunes and I have to unplug it and restart my computer to get Itunes working again. Does anyone know how to fix this? I know that certain Ipod Touches won't work on updated Itunes, is this the same with the Ipod Classic? I am using a PC not a Mac.
Any help is appreciated, I'm not very techy so layman terms are appreciated.

Does this happen no matter what USB port you plug the iPod into? Have you tried using a different USB sync cable to see if that makes any difference?
Sounds like there may be issues with your iPod's hard drive. Perhaps it would be worth it to run a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD to make sure it is still in a healthy condition. See this older post from another forum member turingtest2 on how to perform this test and what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • ITunes 7.1.1 won't recognize iPod and gets stuck.  Help needed!

Since I updated to version 7.1.1, iTunes does not recognize my iPod (a 15GB Model M9460LL). I can work with iTunes before I connect the iPod, but when I do connect it, iTunes freezes up: the beach ball spins endlessly, and the iPod screen stays on "do not disconnect." I can't eject the iPod (it shows up on Finder but not on iTunes), nor force quit the application or the machine. I have to turn the machine off with the on/off button, then unplug the iPod even though its screen says "do not disconnect" (no apparent adverse effects from this, so far).
In all this, I don't get any error messages.
I thought the problem might be with some podcasts. I deleted most of them and set the podcast settings to "update manually."
I had been having some intermittent problems before this upgrade, but nothing like this.
    Any advice?

    Exactly the same thing here...
Brand new iPod U2 version, it is no longer recognized by iTunes 7, (the hard drive is mounted in the Windows Explorer)
When on one time (of many) it was recognized, I tried the 1.2 firmware update... took hours, never completed...
Even tried on another system with a fresh XP/itunes 7 installation, exactly the same symptoms as in my work laptop.
The ipod diagnostics says: Ipod connection failed:

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod Nano (1GB, 1st generation)

I have been having problems Sync'ing my iPod nano with iTunes, however, the more I read help articles and follow the steps, the worse the problem gets. (I'm on a PC using Windows XP)
I've gotten to the point where I updated my iPod software in Disk mode (up until then it was being recognized only in Disk mode), but when iTunes failed to recognize it when not in Disk mode I preceded to restore my iPod to factory settings, as instructed in the help articles.
Now, up until then, I still had music in my iPod, and I was being able to charge it and listen to my music even though I couldn't sync the iPod anymore. After restoring, I not only lost my music (which I was aware of), but it STILL did not fix my problem. So I started to get annoyed.
I then noticed that my iPod was being recognized by My Computer, just not by iTunes, so I began to perform the steps indicated in the following article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
I restarted my iPod service - no luck
I removed iTunes - no luck
I emptied my Temp directory and restarted...
That's when iTunes stopped recognizing my iPod altogether, not even in Disk mode. Not only that, but it seems to have affected the iPod itself, since it won't turn off or exit Disk mode anymore. So now I'm scared of going though with any more steps on whichever "help" articles and making the problem even worse than it already is (if that's possible).
The only other information I can provide is that windows is still recognizing my iPod, no problem, and when I connect my iPod, iTunes actually launches... but DOESN'T recognize a thing. So I ran a diagnostics using iTunes and here's what I got (iPod diagnostics):
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

IPOD (H:\), iPod nano running firmware version 1.3.1
All green lights, and as you can see, according to iTunes, NO PROBLEM! Except that it won't recognize the iPod that the disgnistics says exists and reads... ?!?!?!
If anyone could shed some light on my situation, i would be VERY greatful!

My IPod Nano will charge when connected to my computer but it won't come up on My Computer or iTunes. So I can't update the songs. I've already tried reseting the iPod. Does anybody know what I can do to fix it.

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod Touch 2G!

I just got it today. If I connect it to my PC, Windows recognizes "Apple iPod" but iTunes won't do a thing.
All I get in the iPod is the iTunes and the USB cable image.
    What should I do?
Ohh, and my PC recognizes it as a Camera...
And if I press the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time, the screen will flash and It'll play the camera shutter sound :S

    Hi,
Try the general troubleshooting tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1852
Is the Apple Mobile Device Service running on the PC?
If the issue persists after trying the tips in the article, try to reconfigure or temporarily disable the security software.

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod touch since Snow Leopard

I convinced my dad to get Snow Leopard (the low price helped), and he loaded it onto his macbook pro, but now his iPod touch won't mount – it charges from the USB port, but iTunes doesn't recognize it. We plugged in my iPhone to see if it would work, and it started iPhoto, but not iTunes. That shows pretty conclusively that the trouble is with iTunes software. We haven't tried reinstalling it because I'm worried he'll lose all of his many playlists and settings. Any suggestions?

    Hello JacobST,
Have you tried resetting the iPod touch with it connected to the Mac? To do this, press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons together until the unit powers off. Then press and hold the Sleep button until the Apple logo appears.
If not luck with that, work through the troubleshooting steps provided in this Apple support document. You can choose to skip the re-installation of iTunes until later, but do know that it will have no affect on the media or settings, because this information is stored elsewhere on his Mac.

  • Itunes won't recognize ipod nano 2nd gen

    hi everyone,
I have a mac powerpc g4 and am running osx 10.3.2 and itunes 6.0.4. as far as I know, that's the latest itunes that will work with this os. I can plug in my own ipod (an old 40 gb) and everything's great. the problem is when my fiance plugs in hers -- she wants to load some of my mp3s onto her ipod. it shows up as an ipod on the desktop, but itunes doesn't recognize it. I tried the 5 R's already -- I even restored her ipod nano 2nd gen and made sure it was in mac format and had the latest software, which it now does. but it makes no difference. her own itunes/mac recognizes her ipod just fine; the problem is when we plug it into my mac. I suspect I need some different, updated driver that will explain to my mac that the thing that's being plugged in needs to be treated like an ipod. any ideas where I can find such a driver that would work with my os, or, failing that, any ideas as to anything else that would fix the problem? any help is much appreciated.
    thanks,
    John

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod nano 7th gen. after recent update

I just downloaded the latest update for Itunes (11.1.2) and all of a sudden iTunes doesn't recognize my iPod nano anymore.
It's a brand new one, 7th generation, only bought last week, and before the update all was functioning well. Windows does recognize the iPod so I don't know what the problem is.
Things I did to solve the problem: delete iTunes from and reinstall it again to my laptop and restart the computer a couple of times.
Anyone have an idea what to do or what the problem is?

  • Itunes won't recognize ipod *PLEASE HELP- I'M NOT GETTING ANY REPLIES*

I plug in my ipod, and it appears in My Computer, but it won't come up in the sources for itunes. I've tried it on 3 different computers and it still won't work. I put some music on it a few days ago and it worked fine then. What's going on, now? And how can I fix it?
    hp   Windows XP

You can try opening the iPod drive in My Computer,
and deleting the folder "iPod_Control" (this is a
hidden folder, you have to enable "Show hidden files
and folders" by clicking on the Tools menu in My
Computer, selecting Folder Options, and going to the
View tab). Doing this will delete everything off
your iPod (music, videos, games, etc) but after doing
so, if you open iTunes it may recognize the iPod
again and ask you to restore it (will likely say your
iPod is in "Recovery Mode"). Then do the restore,
and see if it's recognized after that.
That helps, but I don't have my music on anything but my iPod because I downloaded it all on a computer at a coffee shop, so if I do that, I'll have wasted about $175 worth of music. I'll use that as a last resort, but are there any other ideas?

  • Computer won't recognize ipod and ipod flases foler with exclamation point

Last week, my computer randomly said it did not recognize my ipod. I continued to use it and figured I'd worry about updating it another time. Then today, I was using my nano and it stopped and flashed the folder with the exclamation point icon and below the icon directed my to Apple's support website. I've tried most of the things I've seen in the forums, and I really have no clue what to do. Everytime I try to turn it on, the icon comes up and everytime I try to connect to iTunes my computer won't recognize it.

Just confirming... have you seen these articles?
