ITunes Won't Sort Some Artists By Last Name

I have recently decided to sort my artists by last name on my Macbook, using "Sort Artist" and "Sort Album Artist" in the sorting columns of iTunes.  This has worked fine for all artists, except two of them.  For instance, my Brian Wilson collection will not move and remains sorted by B instead of W.  The only way I can move it to W is if I change the "Album Artist" to a different name in the info section.  So, if I changed it to, say, "Brian Wilson 2" or some variation, it moves.  But when I change it back to Brian Wilson, it keeps reverting to sorting by first name. Of course, this is unpractical.  I deleted and reimported my entire Wilson collection, and it still didn't make a difference.
Strangely, on my iMac, I do not have this problem and everything sorts perfectly.  I am an iTunes Match subscriber and thought perhaps that was messing with things, but the problem still persists with it off.  So if there's any suggestions to what's going on, that'd be great.
Thanks!

I have this problem too, and I get around it by adding a middle name -  so Franz Schubert became Franz Peter Schubert
It's not ideal, but there is not fix that I can find.

  • My iTunes Library is arranged with Artist as "Last Name, First Name"

So John Mayer songs have the artist field as "Mayer, John" (without quotes). I have a large physical CD collection arranged this way and it is the way I think. I have 10K+ songs tagged this way (although it doesn't impact a band name like The Beatles.)
Can I use iTunes Match successfully with the artist tags "backwards"? Will using the Match change the meta-data, if I download and replace? Most of my library is at 128K or 196K and I would like to upgrade matched songs to 256K.
I have searched this topic and found general assurances that meta-data does not change, but is that still true for a tag as basic as Artist Name?

Just as an aside, do you have your artists tagged like that for sorting purposes?
If so then it may be worth having a look at the "sort artist" field (under the sorting tag of get info.
In this way, you can have it displaying as John Mayer but sorting as Mayer John. As someone who had previously tried all sorts of sorting methods, this was just about the best discovery that I made about iTunes.
Apologies if you already knew this, or have some other reason for tagging that way, but I've been surprised by the number of people who aren't aware of this.

  • How do I sort artists by last name in iTunes?

HHow do I sort artist by last name in iTunes without tagging each album?

For individual songs, Get Info has a sort field.  If you have a lot of songs, it will still be a lot of work to get caught up, though.

  • Sorting "artist" by last name

How do I sort artists by last name, i.e. Davis, Miles rather than Miles Davis?

I don't believe this issue is resolved. I believe it is a fundamental flaw in the iPod. If I'm look for a Frank Zappa song, iPod sorts it so that it's filed under "F" for Frank. Blech. The problem is, iPod does not have artist first and last name fields, just "Artist".
So the solution proposed above does work, but man, what a pain.
In the case above, an alternative (and quicker?) solution is to change the Artist Name sort field to "Davis" or "Davis, Miles" click OK, then click apply Artist sort to all songs by this artist, which iPod will do gracefully. But, man, with over 3,000 songs and who knows how many hundreds of Artists, Albums, and individual cuts, what an arduous process!
The fix is to have first and last name fields or to get "smart" and recognize a space between names so that an algorithm could be written to sort properly. Of course in that scenario, doing a mass conversion, "Led Zeppelin" would be filed as "Zeppelin, Led". Argh. (File as Zep).

  • ITunes Won'r Recognize Some MP3 Files

I have 2400+ MP3 files in My Music folder. All were ripped using the same DVD-+RW drive, same software (WMP 10.0) and same settings (192Kbps). All were ripped within several days of each other, all from purchased CD albums.
When I tried to add these files to my brand new iTunes library (in order to transfer to my brand new 5G iPod) iTunes only recognized 1802 files. I attempted to manually add the files that weren't recognized, no joy (no error messages either, nothing). I researched the issue; I made sure the file folder permissions were appropriately set; I scanned the hard drive for physical defects; I defragmented the drive; I ran several ID3 tag verifier utilities; I played the "problem" MP3 files on every other music player software I own (WMP 10.0, RealPlayer, MusicMatch) and they played flawlessly. Lastly, I attempted to re-rip the files directly to iTunes from the original CDs; that worked, so I can safely assume there are no copyright or protected-file issues to deal with.
Short of re-ripping 600+ music files to iTunes manually, does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to get these files onto iTunes?

    I have the same problem.
I've had these songs in itunes & on my ipod before for awhile & they played just fine. I upgraded itunes & everything seemed fine, until I auto synced my ipod & I get this message saying that five files aren't copied to the ipod because the ipod won't play them. Then I try to play them in itunes & itunes won't play them, even though they show up in the library & are MP3s. Quicktime player & VLC both play these files still...
I have no idea what could cause the error for these random 5 songs, which are not related to each other & come off the same CDs as other songs which are still able to be played...

  • Itunes will only show apple tv as device, but itunes won't show some tabs

when apple tv is connected to my laptop, itunes will show the device but the screen won't show some of the tabs like: info, or music, it does show: summary, photos. What is wrong with itunes not showing the apple tv device source tabs?

Hello Nate, thanx for the solution but that also doesn't worked for me and to name it - I am not willing to disable my firewall to get something running that worked before the atv 2.4 and itunes update - same with my network settings - after trying static IPs I returned to DHCP - so if there are friends in my network they don't need to adjust anything at their devices! And I am not working with WLAN - just simple cable - good, fast and save!
My atv has a static MAC-Address isn't it an easy thing for a software to search for it? I am willing to enter it in itunes if I could but I can't!
The whole software programming seems not to be very buggy and insufficent to me!
    e.g.
    1) The atv reboot-function on the atv-remote with pressing - and menu for 5 seconds always gets me the fancy question mark - so the only real reboot is pulling the plug,
    2) On itunes I can test my network, my iphone and my ipod (which I don't have) but why can't I test my apple tv connection?
    3) Sometimes I had the problem that I have to sync some content (music and videos) more than one time to be accepted from the atv - even if it was mp3 and mp4 - but that's not a problem anymore while there is not any sync for the atv
It seems to me that I am forced to enable SSH or FTP-connect so I can get rid of itunes!

  • ITunes won't play some CD's I upload

I have an old 40GB iPod- I think it is the 4th generation (right before iPods with color screens came out). Every once in a while, I upload a CD that won't play in iTunes, and I don't know why. I have deleted the CD's from iTunes and uploaded them again, and they still won't play. I have updated my version of iTunes and done the whole process again, and it still won't work.
I was uploading my Dropkick Murphys CD's, and found 4 of the CD's that won't work:
    Do or Die
    Live on St. Patrick's Day
    Tessie (EP)
    Singles Collection Volume 2
All of these are uploaded from original, store-bought CD's straight to iTunes. I have not synced the iPod to my iTunes library lately, because my old computer died and I don't want to lose the several thousand songs that are on my iPod. (Why won't iPod let you download from your iPod to a new computer? Aaarrrrgh!)
When I click on the first song on that CD in my iTunes library, the little "speaker" icon next to the track just seems to fall down the list of songs. Nothing plays, and it only takes about a second for the speaker icon to fall from one tune to the next. When it reaches the next CD, it starts playing normally again.
I've also noticed that it shows "0:00:00" for the time remaining AND the time elapsed when iTunes tries to play the songs I'm having trouble with. The track length shows up as some ridiculous number, like "789:57:13."
How can I fix this so that I can enjoy all of my music?

I'm not completely sure HOW it happened, but I managed to get 90% of my songs transferred from my iPod to my computer, iTunes updated, and now ALL of that music is on my iPod again.
Floola worked well, but it would be nice if their website had some better instructions. After getting music transferred from my iPod to Floola, I copied everything in Floola to a new folder on my computer and closed Floola. Next, I opened iTunes and the folder I had copied the music to. I minimized them so that both cold be seen on the screen at the same time.
When I started moving music from the folder to iTunes in small batches (about 50), I could more easily identify which songs were causing the error that said some titles were too long. When I encountered that error, I moved a smaller portion of that batch of songs until I found the exact problem. I put the "problem" songs into another folder to deal with later. (It turns out that those songs were all limited to 3 or 4 albums, which I will re-load manually from the CD.)
Once I was done copying all of the songs from the folder to iTunes, and the problem songs had been moved away to a new folder, I thought I was done. I shut down everything, and restarted my computer. I opened iTunes and the music folder again, and this time selected everything in the music folder (not just batches of 50). I dragged the entire list (5000 songs) to iTunes AGAIN, and my music library grew once more. I'm not sure why this happened since all of the music had been moved once before, but I'm glad I did it. I gained another 500 songs!
After the last copy session from the folder to iTunes, I shut everything down once again. I started iTunes, sorted a few playlists, and plugged in my iPod. It updated perfectly.
*+THANKS TO EVERYONE HERE WHO HELPED! I would still be stuck without all of your expertise and advice!+*

  • Itunes won't play some of my .mp3 files or add them to its library

I recently have had some strange issues with Itunes. On MP# files I purchased elsewhere, I would add the folder for the new artist to my library, and then voila I would have them in my Itunes library. Here lately, it would play some of the files but not all of them from a few of the artists, but not others. When I click on the song nothing happens; there's just a little gray apple up there and when you play the song in front of it and advance to the next song, it skips the one it would not play entirely. This is happening on 2 or 3 artists randomly; I know the songs used to play on there but now they won't. So, now I have uninstalled Itunes, eliminated all its directories, and reinstalled Itunes again and made my new library. Now Itunes will not even put those songs in my library so I can't even see them. In fact, for my Kings of Leon songs, it now won't add any of them to my library when before it would only add a couple after I had removed them and tried re-adding them. What is going on here? Any advice is much appreciated!!

Those are the usual symptoms of iTunes being strict/finicky/incompetent (pick your own interpretation) about slight variations in MP3 formats. It can usually be resolved by treating the files with a 3rd party tag cleanup program such as MP3 Validator, and then adding them to your iTunes library.

  • Sorting - some artists go missing on my iPod

I have several artists who go under a variety of different names. Bobby Bland is one - sometimes he's known as Bobby 'Blue' Bland, or Bobby "Blue" Bland, or just plain Bobby Bland. All the same guy, and in the 'Sorting' column I've told iTunes to sort them all as 'Bland Bobby'. This works fine in iTunes, but not with my iPod, which cannot see Bobby "Blue" Bland at all. The music IS there, if I can be bothered to look for the album title, but does NOT appear in the albums listed under Bobby Bland. Exactly the same thing happened with Gil Scott-Heron, who sometimes worked with Brian Jackson. If I put Gil -Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson in the sorting info iPod lost this artist. The only way round this seemed to be to rename all the GSH + BJ albums as Gil Scott-Heron and leave out Brian Jackson altogether. Much the same applies to BB King, who is sometimes B.B. King, or B. B. King....
This issue needs to be addressed, Apple!

I'm not sure how the classical musical is tagged, but one of these things might work:
-- Select all of the Tchaikovsky tracks, do Get Info and enter the word Tchaikovsky in the Comment window. Then sort your list by the Comment window.
-- Create a Smart Playlist with the rule that Comment is (or includes) Tchaikovsky. Now you've isolated all Tchaikovsky tracks together.
--Another option would be to change the tags themselves, perhaps by pasting the word Tchaikovsky just in front of the Artist name (which, in this case, I would assume is the orchestra performing the work).
It's a bit of work, but until iTunes gets some feature updates, these are some workarounds that classical music lovers might use to achieve their desired results. If you haven't already, submit your thoughts to Apple Feedback about iTunes and let them know how the application is lacking in features for classical music. I'm sure they couldn't anticipate every user scenario when creating the program, and the more users who let them know, the more likely something will change.
Hope one my suggestions helps you out in the meantime.

  • ITunes won't sync some music videos to iPhone?

    Hey gang-
I have lots of iTunes purchased music videos in iTunes that I also sync and enjoy on my iPhone 3gs. But I also have some music videos that I made myself from video I shot. They display and play fine in iTunes on my Mac.
But the weird thing is the ones I made will NOT sync to my iPhone. Now- I recall learning something about this a few years ago. I seem to recall iPod and iPhone are much more "fussy" than Desktop iTunes about what they consider to be a Music Video. Something to do with Metatags, but it was very specific about which ones?
    Here's what I do know:
    1) Both my types of music videos appear in the Music Videos Smart playlist in iTunes on my Mac.
    2) When I Get Info, both types of Music Videos show Media Kind of "Music Video" on the Options tab.
    3) Both play Audio and Video perfectly in iTunes on my Desktop Mac
    4) But the ones I made will NOT sync to my iPhone, even though the playlist they are in is selected and "Include Music Videos" is selected in the iTunes Sync Music tab.
Can anyone remember what the "magic" is to getting iPhone to get on the same page with iTunes on Music Videos? Running iTunes 10.2.1 and Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and iOS 4.2.1 on iPhone 3gs
    Thanks gang!

  • ITunes won't recognize some videos

I've been using a program called "ImTOO iPod Movie Converter" to convert video files to iPod format, but I'm finding that some of the videos won't go into iTunes. For instance, I encoded several videos all in one batch so they used the same default encoding settings, but only about half of them could be imported into the iTunes program. The ones that were recognized seem random, not in any kind of order.
Is there a reason why this happens? The ones that transfer to iTunes will upload to the iPod just fine, and they play the way they're supposed to. How do I make the REST of them work?

OK, the first reply actually wound up working afterall. I don't know what I was doing wrong the first time I tried. I think it was because I was double clicking and all I apparently needed to do was click once. Thanks to all who replied!

  • Itunes won't recognise some music

When downloading some albums for the internet, when I try and drag and drop them into my libary they just won't show up in there ???? any ideas. The file format is mp3 audio and they play fine in windows media player, but I can't get them onto itunes.....

Dragging & dropping I have found does not work as they do have to be properly imported either from disc or downloaded from iTunes? Where are you dragging the files from?

  • ITunes won't sync some of my movies to my iPod

So it gives me this error "some of the items in the itunes library including "Tresspass", were not copied to the ipod "iPod" because you are not authorized for them on this computer." I've authorized the computer, and it plays in itunes, it just won't sync, does anyone have any clue what's happening.

I have the same problem too... also with the movie Cars 2. Though my purchase was straight from iTunes and not a Digital Copy code. So frustrating! I clicked on the "Report A Problem" link on my purchase history page in iTunes and the response I got back was less than helpful. They basically told me that as "iTunes Store Customer Support", they are non-technical and can't help me. They gave me a number for Apple Tech Support 800-275-2273, but I haven't had a chance to call yet while they are open.

  • ITunes won't sync some songs?

I got them from a youtube-mp3 site, (only because they're songs that never got popular enough to be on iTunes and stuff, so youtube-mp3 sites are the only way) but usually it works. I have youtube songs on my iPod and they work fine. The thing is, the last three songs I put in my iTunes library refuse to sync to my iPod. I have tried everything I could think of. I am not out of space, and my laptop is authorized. I have tried it multiple times and made sure all my software is updated. I only have two computers authorized including the one I'm using. I sync my iPod, and it says 'Syncing'. After that, it puts songs that I bought on my iPod onto my iTunes, but not those specific three songs to my iPod. It was two songs, but I added another one and it won't sync. Yes, all of them are checked, and I don't even have the option where it only copies checked songs and movies to my iPod anyways. I honestly have no idea what to do and I am starting to get very frustrated. If anyone knows how to fix this, please.

+It will try for about 3-5 minutes, then it give me a message about it not being able to read the disk or something to that nature. I even tried this for my iPod Shuffle and the samething occurred.+
In the course of your troubleshooting to date, have you checked through the following document?
"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod

  • ITunes won't recognize some of my CD's. Displays songs as Track 1, Track 2,

I'm trying to put some of my CD's into iTunes but some of them are not being recognized. Instead of listing the songs by name they are just listed as Track 1, Track 2, etc. Is there a way for me to manually type in the name of the songs so that I can differentiate between them? I can't have a whole bunch of Track 1's etc. on my iPod. There's no way to tell them all apart. For example, I loaded a CD into iTunes and it listed all the songs as Track 1, Track 2. etc., instead of by name. When I updated my Nano the songs appeared as track 1, track 2 etc. on the Nano. Pleae help! How do I get the correct song names in the library?
