ITunes won't take songs OFF of the iPod (iTunes 7, vid)

Hello!
Well, I"m loving the new stuff - mostly. However, I've noticed the "Purchased music transfer" is keeping around 400 MB of music on the iPod, after I've deleted it from the iTunes library.
Why would I delete 400 mb of songs (around 100) that I 'bought'? They were freebies and promotions over several months. I dropped them on an external drive and removed them from iTunes. When I sync either of my iPods (9-month old Vid/2 year old clickwheel), it prompts "There is purchased music on this iPod that is not in your iTunes library. Would you like to transfer?" No, I would not, I say. You see, I have only 900 MB free on my clickwheel, and I'd like to use those extra 400 MB for transfering files between my Macs (via FW Disk Mode).
In any case, I'm essentially looking for a way to restore the default iTunes 6-style iPod Syncing - that is, exactly the same on the iPod that it is on the iTunes library.
Tips?

Right click the filename that won't download and selsct 'Get Info'. Look at the file path, does it have a //?// in it? That is a problem with Amazon downloads that prevent iTunes from finding the file. Use 'Add Folder' to add the album to your library and try syncing it again

  • Is it possible to take songs off of your ipod and put it them on itunes

by accident i permanately deleted all my songs off my computer and cant get them back ,,,trust me i tried everything. im wondering is possible to take songs from your ipod and put them on your itunees library?

You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
There's a command in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" you can check out. A paragraph on it has also been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not work with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.

If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then check the "Manually manage songs" box.
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.

  • ITunes won't open... says the file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.

Every time i click the shortcut or the app in the start menu it comes up with that message :/ i have tried replacing the shortcut and opening one of my songs. I just updated iTunes to the latest version and I don't know what to do? Thanks for any tips x

This error prevents iTunes from launching. The library file was modified to work with the newer iTunes version, so it is no longer compatible with the previous version. The good news, however, is that Apple does backup the iTunes library file into a subdirectory that you can use to revert back to the previous version.
To recover a previous version of the iTunes Library.itl file, use the following steps:
Open up your My Documents\My Music folder.
We will first backup the current version. Rename iTunes Library.itl to something like iTunes Library.itl.bak.
Go into the My Documents\My Music\Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
You may see several files that start with iTunes Library and have a date included in the name. Copy the newest file in the folder.
Go back to the My Documents\My Music and paste the file from the previous step.
Rename the new copied file to iTunes Library.itl.
Your library should now be restored to the previous version of iTunes, and you should no longer receive the message.

  • Itunes re-"updates" many songs already on the ipod

My iTunes has a tendency of updating songs that are already on my iPod. Of the 3000+ songs I have on the iPod, it re-"updates", about 800 or so. It also seems to update those same 800 songs over and over again. It does this 800 song update every 2 or 3 times I plug in the iPod.
I know some of you may be thinking that the problem might be that I'm changing the tags on those songs, but I assure you that I am in no way altering or even touching those songs that update for no reason.
Can anyone tell me why iTunes is doing that, or how I might be able to stop it?
    Custom   Windows XP Pro

There are two things that I do that might be contributing to it, I just noticed. I tend to use the task-manager to end the Itunes.exe, and Ipodservice.exe processes after closing Itunes (I dont like closing a program and finding that it's still doing stuff in the background).
Also, I do not use the 'Eject' button in iTunes to disconnect the ipod, I manually eject it from the My Computer display of the IPOD portable media device.
I'm trying to experiment with it to see if either is actually the cause of the problem. Does anyone know for sure whether or not those processes remember which files need to be updated?

  • Itunes won't open, music gone after installing ipod/itunes software again

I was using itunes to purchase music and burn it to cds. I recently got a nano and tried to install the software last night. Now Itunes won't open, and I don't even see any of my downloaded music on my computer. It's possible that it's a problem with my computer, but we're also looking into the issues reported with Norton, etc. I should know more by tonight. My question is how do I get my music back if it was somehow deleted by this process? Obviously I've already purchased it, but I don't remember all the songs and I didn't have a backup.

You need to search your hard drive(s) and recycle bin for the music files.
Purchased music will always have a .m4p file extension.
Without a backup, if the files are gone, the music is gone.

  • Same Ipod recognized twice by iTunes, crashes when deleting songs off iPod.

I know that others have had this issue but there was never an answer and it was awhile back so I figured I'd post a new message. Everytime I sync my iPod it is recognized twice by iTunes. What I mean by this is that it looks as if I am syncing two iPods with the same name at the same time, although upon examination there contents appear different (when looking at the color bar that shows how much of the iPod is video, music, other, etc...) In addition, if I attempt to delete a song or songs off of the iPod, Itunes crashes but with no error message, just straight to the desktop, no questions asked. I know this is not a problem with drive letters as I have already checked that out and Windows is only recognizing the iPod once as the Q drive and no other drive shares that letter. Can someone please help? (or will my question end up in the iTunes message board graveyard of unanswered problems like so many others?)

so yeah i just tried that... didnt work. I changed the drive letter from G: to I: and no dice. This is all after i used msconfig to disable all third party services that automatically load at windows start up. Yet once again, those weren't the problem. So i completely uninstalled itunes, redownloaded, and then reinstalled the newest version with the third party services still disabled. Once again, itunes crashes : /
my friend is coming over in a bit and im going to see if i can successfully connect to her itunes. Only other options right now i feel i have is to pay apples sorry *** $30 to help me solve this over the phone.. or i can restore my ipod, then try again : ( any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated : )

  • Take songs off Ipod shuffle

Can I take songs off my sons Ipod shuffle? If so how do I do it?

Depending on whether you want to take ALL songs off or just SOME:
    1. To remove ALL current content, plug it in and in iTunes, in the Settings tab, choose Restore...
    2. To remove SOME songs, in iTunes in the Contents tab select (higlight) songs to be removed and press the DELETE key on your keyboard.

  • How can I delete individual songs off of my ipod shuffle with this new itunes?

We used to be able to delete individual songs off of the ipod shuffle and now that itunes changed we can't figure out how to do that.

    Hello ArmyWife8610,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.  I found an article with some steps to delete photo albums off of an iPhone.  The way you delete the photos will depend on whether they were taken with the iPhone (on the Camera Roll) or if you synced the albums:
To delete photos and videos from your device
To delete synced photos and videos
In iTunes, select the device icon in the Devices list on the left. Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
    Choose "Sync photos from."
On a Mac, choose iPhoto or Aperture from the pop-up menu.
On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
    Click Apply.
To delete Camera Roll photos and videos
There are two methods to delete items from the Camera Roll:
Import the Camera Roll to your computer, choosing to delete items after import.
    or
Delete photos and videos from your device manually. Open the Photos application, open the Camera Roll, tap the Action button, tap each photo to select it, and tap the Delete button.
Note: For photos and videos you want to save for later, import them to your computer before deleting them from the Camera Roll.

  • HT1725 I bought a song off of the itunes store on my iphone but it wont play.  I even tried to repurchase it but it says that I already purchased it.  I have restarted my phone and turned it off but it still won't download or play.  HELP!

I bought a song off of the itunes store on my iphone but it wont play.  I even tried to repurchase it but it says that I already purchased it.  I have restarted my phone and turned it off but it still won't download or play.  HELP!

Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting that track from your phone and re-download it via the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app on it, or the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if it re-downloads in the same state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via the Store > View Account menu option and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find that song and use the 'Report a Problem' link and fill in details about the problem (iTunes support should reply within, I think, about 24 hours).
If the 'report a problem' link doesn't work (it's been taking some people to this site on a browser instead of showing a form in iTunes) then you can try contacting iTunes support via this page : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/- click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
