Itunes wont open - tried everything, help!

I have installed the new itunes and now it wont open, i've uninstalled it, reinstalled it, installed new versions etc.
Anyone got any advice?

I got this from somewhere else in the communities -- and it worked! Here it is just as the person who posted it .
+Hi People, thanks for your help. I had the same problem. After being prompted to update to iTunes Ver. 9.1 I went ahead and let it automatically update and install iTunes and Quicktime. After updating to Ver. 9.1, iTunes would not open or run on my Windows XP system. It would show up in "processes" as a running program but would not show up on my screen.+
+After reading your discussion about how Bonjour would interfere, I tried to uninstall it. It wouldn't uninstall because it is using one of the processes. I tried quite a few things including completely uninstalling all Apple programs and reinstalling iTunes. I manually uninstalled Bonjour. No luck!+
++Here's what you need to do. After reinstalling iTunes, Navigate to the Program Files\ Bonjour+ folder and rename this folder Bounjour.Old. Restart the computer. Bounjour service should not now show up as a service in Administrative Tools\Services. DELETE the Bonjour.old folder. THEN go to Control Panel - Remove Programs and REMOVE Bounjour. It will now uninstall sucessfully.+
+After doing this iTunes started right up, loaded all my old settings, and recognized my iPod just like normal. Hooray and good luck.+

    Hey there,
So, Tell me, Do you see iTunes and Quicktime in your processes tab? (hit CTRL ALT DEL) Which Service Pack of XP do you have? Which firewall and antivirus are you running on your PC?
At this point, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes is just an exercise for the fingers and makes a mess of your computer. So, post back with the answers and we will go from there.

  • Itunes wont install tried everything

i have tried to install itunes 8. comes up with not a valid win32 error. have deleted installer. dont have quicktime installed so tried to install and it came up with the same error. please help....

Saying you have tried everything doesn't help because no one else knows what you tried.
Have you seen this article on trouble installing iTunes:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
It contains advice about your error and other general help.
You could try downloading with a different browser if you have one. Turning off popup blocking and also web accelerator software if you have it.
Also when you download iTunes, save the installer on your desktop and run it from there. Also turn off virus checking during the actual install.
If none of that works, you could try downloading from an alternative site assuming the mods don't edit out the link which they sometimes do.

Have you had any problems with downloads from other sites?

  • ITunes wont open, tried pretty much everything

So earlier this month I went to update to iTunes 8.0.2, expecting the same standard process. When I went to open iTunes after the update, though, nothing happens. When I poen the task manager, I find that no application is running. But when I check my processes screen, I find that iTunes.exe is open, but operating at only about 14,000K of memory usage. (iTunes, if I remember correctly, can usually hog around 100,000K of mem usage)
So I tried to repair, no go. I tried uninstalling, downloading the installer straight from the website, and then reinstalling. This too failed. I even went as far as to use a special uninstall tool, Revo Uninstaller, to deep scan and clear the registry of the last remnants of it, Quicktime, and iPod updater. After completely getting rid of this, I downloaded the installer for iTunes 8.0.1 to use the last version of iTunes that worked for me. And yet again, I still have nothing happen when I open iTunes.

Had same problem for weeks. Kept following and reading all discussions re this. Several people mentioned that Norton virus blocker (even when they thought it had been removed from their system in place of a different blocker). I didn't have Norton, I had Verizon Wireless Security Suite, experimentally, I disabled the virus blocker and Wha-lah!
    Give it a try...
    good luck!

    Hi there,
    New user to discussion forums.
    Are you able to help?
I have checked out the iTunes.exe in Task Manager, and yes it disappears from the Processes view in Task Manger when I close the frozen application (by 'right clicking and closing' on the minimized iTunes tab at the bottom of my screen). I do not appear to have QuickTime installed now, also.
Also when open iTunes I get a 'Warning! The registry settings used by iTunes drivers for improting and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other cds burning software. Please re-install iTunes' message, which needs to be 'OK'd'. After a slight pause iTunes opens but immediately freezes. JAY
I am having a similar problem. A few days back I was asked to upgrade my version of iTunes. Since then it won't open correctly, and when it finally decides to open it freezes on my PC. I am then unable to close the application using the close option on iTunes. I need to close it via my Task Manager. I noticed the iTunes download includes a QuickTime download at the same time. I cannot open QuickTime due to a 'Buffer overun'. I am so confused and have no idea what to do. I have lost count of the amount of times I have uninstall iTunes and then re-install it. I have noticed I do not seem to be able to uninstall QuickTime using the uninstall option. CAN ANYBODY ADVISE PLEASE? I have a PC and use Windows XP Home Edition.

    hi ky!
When I open the Task Manager processes Quicktime .exe opens and runs; but itunes.exe just hangs there.
    let's see if this actually
    b works
    as a diagnostic technique.
okay, if itunes.exe is persisting in your Task Manager
    b and
you've got Norton Internet Security 2005, let's try the "Lorraine" technique:
    Lorraine M, "NIS/i-tunes problem rectified" #2, 12:51am Oct 17, 2005 CDT
... but if you're not running Norton (or some different Symantec firewall), let's try this one:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302386
    keep us posted.
    love, b

I have a new computer, and have transferred all of my old files already etc., but when I downloaded Itunes and tried to open it, it starts up and tries to access the itunes store, then tells me there is a problem and closes it, but doesn't tell me what the problem is.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  I've tried unistalling and reinstalling, but I get the same result which is really frustrating

Let's try this first. Hold down the Shift key while you try to launch iTunes. You should eventually see the following dialog:
Click "Choose library". Browse to inside the following location (depending on what operating system you're running):
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes library
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\iTunes\
... and open the iTunes library you find in there.

  • Cannot get Itunes to open - tried everything

Everytime I click on Itunes 7.5 to open nothing happen. When I open up the task manager it's right there, I close it, re-open it and again nothing. I got tired with all the un-installing and re-installing so I just reformated my computer. I installed only the drivers for my MB and video, went to the apple site and downloaded a fresh copy of Itunes 7.5, installed it and when I tried to run it - the same exact thing - will not open.
What the **** is going on? I can't access my Ipod for a week now! Is apple trying to fix this - I know the problem can't be on my side becuase I installed it on a reformated computer with the same problem.

Let's try to get an idea of what might be going on with some preliminary questions from b noir's "smack" for iTunes launch failures:
Is there an error message associated with the launch failure?
If so, what does it say and what (if any) error numbers are there?
If there's not an error message, let's check your QuickTime (its well-being is a requirement for a functioning iTunes).
Go to the XP Start menu > All Programs and try running QuickTime.
    Does it start?
If not, then the same question as for iTunes - is there an error message?
If so, what does it say and what (if any) error numbers are there?
Do you notice any other peculiar behavior with QuickTime?
    <hr />
You've more or less answered this next question but for the sake of clarity ...
If there are no error messages and there is no problem with QuickTime then reboot your computer and open the Windows Task Manager.
Go to the Processes tab of the Task Manager and then try starting iTunes one more time.
Does iTunes.exe appear in the list of processes now?
If iTunes.exe appears, does it remain in the Processes list or discontinue after a brief period of time?

    -checked if it was user
    -checked quicktime

    -checked roaming files
nothing? any help would be greatly appreciated!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it, which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
