ITunesPhoneDriver.pkg

As part of a solution to problems with Disk Utility (DU) not being able to repair permissions properly it has been suggested to:
"Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg"
After upgrading from 10.2.3 to 10.2.8, and downloading recommended secuity updates and software (including iTunes 6.0.2), I encounted the usual problem with DU stalling. When I went to the library to locate the iTunes .pkg files that needed deleting, I discovered only the iTunes file iTunesX.pkg was present. There was no iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg file, well enough other files. So that solution didn't work for me (dragging the iTunes app to the desktop before running DU did work, though).
However, at least one other poster stated that it was important to have the iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg file in the library. Since I don't, but iTunes seems to be working, could some tell me whether I really need it or not? And why wasn't it installed in the software update for iTunes?
TIA,
Drake Bradley

Ok, thanks for the info. I did in fact install 6.0.2 from the software update preference panel, so I should have gotten this file. But it sounds like I have no need for it anyway -- I don't have a mobile phone.
Thanks,
Drake

  • Replacing .pkg files to fix "Error: No valid packages"

    Hi all -
I've just learned the hard way that I'm not supposed to delete files from the Receipts folder.
    I've done my due diligence, so I know that I need to replace at least "BaseSystem.pkg", but I have questions;
Is it ok, if I'm running 10.4.9, to copy it from my other mac running 10.3.9?
Should I try to replace the other .pkg files I deleted?
Should I just copy the whole Receipts folder?
What'll happen if I get packages I didn't have before, or that don't match the versions of the apps they're supposed to be associated with?
Sorry for all the questions, just want to be certain so I don't have to learn any more lessons the hard way.
    Thanks!
OBTW: I've also finally learned - after 10+ years as a Mac user - to back up my hard drive.

  • ITunes 7.1.1 (5) does not find motorola SLVR L7 w/iTunes

My Motorola SLVR L7 used to sync with iTunes. No longer, since the upgrade to iTunes 7.1.1.
With iTunes launched, I connect the phone via my USB cable, and receive the following error message -
"An iTunes-enabled mobile phone is connected, but it could not be identified. Please disconnect and reconnect the mobile phone, then try again."
I noticed similar topics in this section, but I've tried several of the recommendations, without success.
I've tried the following approaches -
    1) eject the SD card from the desktop, disconnect phone from cable, reconnect phone to cable, launch iTunes - no success
    2) #1 + reformatting the SD card from the phone in between the disconnect/reconnect
    3) reformatting the SD card from the Mac (using Disk Utility -> MS-DOS FAT-16 format), then all steps in #1
    4) download latest iTunes, to open the package, to install the iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg - reboot - no success
Is there another solution out there?
    iMac 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM, 5G iPod 60GB

    FIXED -
I tried re-installing the phone drivers one more time, maybe with the minor difference that the phone was connected via USB at the time. This time, iTunes recognized the phone before the restart.

  • Prepping to upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.4 -- problem with Disk Utility

I have an 17" iMac that I'm preparing to upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.4. In preparation, I did the following:
    * Mounted a new external HD (LaCie) (my second one)
    * Backed-up all personal files / folders to the new drive
    * Ran Software Update to check for any recent updates - updated iTunes (6.0.3) + an iPod update
    * Ran Disk Utility to repair permissions (which I do whenever I've installed or deteted software) -- Have never had any issues, but this is where my problem started.
Repair permissions hangs at the end (status bar to the very end), and it appears to be working on permissions related to iTunes (sorry, will have to run Disk Utility again and follow-up with the specifics). I ran it twice with the same result.
I saw other threads suggesting that the problem may be with the latest iTunes update (recommending moving the iTunes application folder to the desktop and rerunning Disk Utility), but it seems specific to 10.3. Could this be an issue with 10.2.8 as well. If I can successfully complete repairs to permissions (with the above workaround), can I proceed with the 10.4 upgrade, and if so, what should I do with the iTunes application folder (keep it on the desktop, or move it back)?
    Thanks

Cornelius ... thanks for the follow-up. I went ahead and tried both methods, although I should note that I didn't show the iTunes.pkg or iTunesPhoneDrive.pkg files in the Library>Receipts folder as described in the two approaches. I had no luck at all with Kappy's solution (I moved the one file I did have -- iTunesX.pkg -- and Disk Utility stalled as before). I moved iTunes.pkg back to its original folder, and tried the first method you described. I moved the iTunes app to my desktop, and I was able to successfully repair permissions. I trashed two files (iTunes3.pkg and iTunes4.pkg) and left the iTunesX.pkg file as instructed (again, I don't show the iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg file at all). I reran Disk Utility with the same faulty result.
I suspect it may have something to do with the missing files. Any thoughts on that?
    Thanks again.
    Max:
Sorry I misunderstood you. Actually you don't move
your iTunes folder at all. Here are a couple of
procedures. Since I have not had to use it I can't
vouch for either, but I have heard both have worked
    for others.Just to catalogue the
    solutions listed above
Here's what I did, and it worked fine.
    1) Move iTunes onto the Desktop.
    2) Run Disk Utility
    3) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes
.pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and
    iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
    4) empty Trash.
    5) move iTune from Desktop back to 'Applications'.
Hey presto. you should now be able to repair
    permissions again.
    HTH
    Kappy’s solution
    1. Navigate to the /Library/Receipts/ folder.
    2. Locate the iTunes.pkg and iTunesX.pkg files and
    move them to the Desktop.
    3. Run Disk Utility and repair permissions.
    4. Move the .pkg files back into the
    /Library/Receipts/ folder.Note that you
are not moving the iTunes folder, but the .pkg files
from the Receipts folder. In the first method you
Trash some of them, in the second you move them back.
But you don't touch the iTunes application as such.
    Good luck.

  • Disk Utility & permissions issue FIXED!!

After reading many reports of people with the same issues, this worked for me. DO NOT update to iTunes Ver 6.0.2! If you already have, revert back to Ver 6.0.1 and trash your iTunes .plists. After doing so, DU should repair permissions just fine. Another thread mentioned possibly trashing the Chess program and its .plists as well, but as for me, just going back to the previous iTunes 6.0.1 worked! Hope this helps.
    Robb

Here's another solution posted this afternoon.
    1. Did you recently update your iTunes?
If so, that seems to have caused a bit of a problem with Panther.
    If that is the case,
Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all ITunes .pkg files
    EXCEPT iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg.
Be very careful here, be sure to leave the last two there!
Then see if you can repair permissions.

  • Cannot get iTunes to start

Not sure if this is the correct forum but...
I am a long-time Mac OS X user (been using it since 10.0.3) however something has got me stumped. iTunes refuses to start - the Activity Monitor lists the application as Not Responding - after a while I give up and force quit. The application then disappears from the Activity Monitor but the Dock thinks it is still running (black triangle next to the application) and it won't allow a second attempt to re-start.
Any suggestions as to what I can do to sort it out; re-install iTunes? It is quite suspicious that my Mac crashed minutes before I started getting this problem (probably only the third time OS X has crashed on me in six years) so something may have got corrupted somewhere,
    Thanks in advance

A word of caution to anybody trying "remedies" to a problem: Make sure you have a backup of the content (in this case your iTunes Musics Library) somewhere .... CD/DVD's, external hard drive, another computer, etc....
Michael, this might work for you:
Drag the iTunes alias from the Dock to the Desktop and let it go puff!
Disconnect any Firewire or USB cables (except Keyboard USB cable)
    Repair Permissions from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
go to /Applications/Library/Receipts ... trash all iTunes.pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
    Repair Permissions from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
Download 7.2.2 (Mac version) from the Apple website
Repair permissions again ..... RESTART ....
Click and drag a new iTunes icon alias from Applications to the Dock
    Reconnect any Firewire/USB cables
    Hopefully, you get lucky!

  • Unable to reinstall OS X or use Disk Utility on e-Mac; unusual problems

Thank you for any ideas on this!
Try to run Disk Utility but it claims it loses contact with Disk Management Tool and stops in the middle. Tried three different sets of disks and an external CD drive. Have never successfully been able to use DU on this machine.
After successfully reinstalling OSX disk 1, computer restarts to the desktop rather than asking for disk 2.
THE DATE AND TIME WILL NOT STAY ACCURATE. Jumps all over the place.
Tried buying new PRAM battery on the advice of my Mac guru friend. Ran Hardware disk and everything checks out.
Any ideas? Friend suggests a grenade.

    Jeff and all,
My Mac guru deciphered all the techie info down to the following to fix this problem, and it WORKED!!!! Yippee! Only took 7 hours before I figured out how to find this list.
My 82-year-old mother can do without iTunes.
    1) Move iTunes onto the Desktop.
    2) Run Disk Utility
    3) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes.pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
    4) empty Trash.
    5) move iTune from Desktop back to 'Applications'.
    6) Put Chess in the trash.
    7) Empty the Trash
    THANK YOU!

  • Disk Utility crashing...

    PB17" 1.0GHz 60GB HDD
Running a rather routine "Before Software Updates" perms repair - just a habbit I have adopted.
    it crashes.... indicating the following:
"Disk Utility internal error: Disk Utility has lost it's connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility."
I clicked the "Quit" button presented, then a warning about "still working, really quit?" which I effectively said "yes" to aborting current operations.
Restarted Disk Util, and started perms repair again, the dialogue came back again.
Is there a service that has died?
    What is the problem?
Ideas on how to proceed? I am going to reboot anyway, and try again. If results change, I will post. Otherwise...
    Help!

    Hi
If you've got 10.3.9 or earlier, and downloaded iTunes 6.02 recently and hit a problem with running Permissions Repair using Disk Utility (and thousands of people have...see elsewhere on Discussions) then the fix that seems to work for most people ..God knows why... is
"Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg"
It's been a total fix for me. Greater minds than mine will doubtless know the answer as to why it works.

  • Reinstall 10.3 Problems

I recently tried to upgrade to 10.5 from 10.3 using the Archive and Install method. Unfortunately it did not work and the installer quit about a third of the way through the install. After several more attempts, including a simple upgrade install, I gave up and decided to return to 10.3. I also found out that some of my programs will not run on 10.5, so decided to stick with 10.3 for now. Since there were some files on the hard drive which had not backed-up I tried an install of 10.3 using archive and install. It installed fine and everything seemed to work, but I was not able to find the files I was trying to save. I subsequently reinstalled my programs and restored files from my last back-up set. I then discovered things in the application folder which were unique to 10.4/10.5 such as photo boot, front row, automator, etc. I simply trashed them. I also found things in the utility folder which didn't work and seem unique to 10.4/5 such as ODBC Administrator, PODcast Capture, Grapher, etc...I assume I can also trash these. Now to my real problem, System Profiler does not work. When I check it in Get Info it shows it as a 10.5 application. Is there any way for me to get the 10.3 Profiler back on the computer short of doing an erase and install of 10.3? HELP

I did a fresh install on the same hard drive. It simply boots from the fresh install. The old files which exist in the old OS will have to be 'cherry' picked and installed into the 'fresh' install.
The old OS still exists and if I was really into self torture I could probably spend a few more weekends trying to figure out which corrupt file was causing 20 hours of grief. I took action which allowed me to get a system up and running. Its simple....I got a new horse, now I need to find all the documents and programs , so as to get the new horse trained for my simple applications. The reason we back up files is to allow us to take drastic action when systems get hoplessly messed up.
The Itunes 6.02 install was likely the infection causing the DU to 'lose contact' with disk management. I'll fiddle with the old system a bit, but in the mean time I have a perfectly functioning...up to date system. The message files I read , recommended removal of all Itunes PKG files in the receipts folder of the main library. It recommended not deleting a Itunesphonedriver.pkg and itunesx.pkg.
A few other authors were recommending some disc utility programs. The three I saw most common were:
Macjanitor, Tech tool pro and Disc warrior. I would also recommend a duplicate file removal utility, I saw one in the utilities download section at Apple website.
The knowledge I have of Mac systems is limited. I have a small library of OS books (7) and that was very helpful as well, as it helped me understand the concepts that I wanted to define more clearly.

    littleshoulders,
    roam,
I have read all 221 messages in the "sticky" thread about DU, and followed Mac Fool's advice (and that in Apple's Article).
    I have iTunes 7.0.2, and QuickTime 7.1.5.
This time, the "Repairing" ran all the way without a problem. It gave a couple of errors (one about /Library and one about /ColorSync - if I remember correctly). So, it is indeed something with iTunes.
I had 96 pkg's in /Receipts. I put all of them in the trash, except iTunesX.pkg. I do not have iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg. Do I delete all those pkg's, or should I put them back, "just in case"? I have no idea "in case what", though
Your thread does not state any maintenance or
troubleshooting that you have done already (other
than the aforementioned Repair Disk from your install
disk) so you may also wish to post back and let users
know if you have tried any others as of yet such as:
Are the cron maintenance routines run on the
    machine?
I had no idea how to fix the weird things that I have been seeing in the past weeks/months. I also do not have any other maintenance applications installed/running. I guess I should, shouldn't I?...
About those cron routines. I remember reading, long ago, that they will not run when a Mac is in "sleep mode".
    Is that true?
So, I can/should not put my Mac in sleep mode at night? But is it not a little "crazy" to have your Mac running the whole night?
I will have to read up on those cron tasks again.
Someone called Gulliver wrote a message about maintenance: guess I will start there.
Are those other maintenance app's advisable?
Perhaps a "OS X Maintenance for dummies"-book would be handy.
and having a too full HD can create alot of problems
so if you can post back how much free space you have
    left might help.
    I checked it:
    Macintosh HD
    Created : August 31, 2004
    Structure: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Capacity: 74.4 GB
    Available: 47.08 GB
    Used: 27.31 GB free
So, that makes 37% used. That seems to be not that very much to cause performance issues?

  • IMac G3 goofy after 2006-004 security update

I originally posted this in the Safari forum and was re-directed here. After the latest security update, Safari acts very strange. Some pages open but most don't. I can only get to this discussion page by way of a link in an earlier email. www.foxnews.com works fine as does ebay.com. When I type in other addresses (including Google.com) I get a message that says "Safari can't open the page. The error was: "bad server response" (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011). Report the bug to Apple"...which I did. Several other weird things are happening---When I restart, I get a black rectangle inside the blue background as the system loads. Also my clock re-set to 12/31/69. My trash icon on the dock has disappeared, and 2 different printers refuse to print. The printers actually start and make a noise and even thread the paper through, but no printing is on the paper.
I have repaired permissions, zapped the pram, unplugged and restarted, removed some preferences like com.apple.safari.plist. I don't know what else to try.

    Hello again Barb,
Glad to see you took my suggestion & posted here. Here are my thoughts.
Do you have any logs in the Console like this below ?
: for architecture i386 object: ./Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/iTunesHelper.app/Contents/MacOS/iT unesHelper malformed object (unknown flavor for flavor number 0 in LC_UNIXTHREAD command 13 can't byte swap it)
•Do you have itunes in Account/Start up items if yes use the minus[-] to remove it from Start ups.
•Then go to Application folder/iTunes -> ( actions menu) Show package Contents/Resources/iTunes Helper move this to the desktop.
Next Go to HD->Library->Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
•So, just go to the Receipts folder, open it, go to list mode, find the iTune.pkg files, and put into your trash (but don't empty until you've made sure all this works for you) any iTunes.pkg files EXCEPT the ones mentioned above. You do need the iTunes.pkg files mentioned above, but you do not need the ones in your trash.
(NOTE. DO NOT remove any other files except the iTunes.pkg files mentioned.) None of this will affect your music library or music.
Then do a restart & run permissions repair.
The other issue you do not mention is Norton did you uninstall it ?
Which Norton do you use, you did not repy to that.http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2730248&#2730248
Look at macjack's post for the Unistaller.
Backup your files if you have not done so already. If the worse happens at least it will not be a disaster. Any q's please ask.

Does anyone have an idea why this happens and how to fix it?
    Thank you.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Palmer
If you've got 10.3.9 or earlier, and recently updated to iTunes 6.02, then try the following fix, which seems to have worked for most people (see other Discussion forums here where literally THOUSANDS of people have hit this problem thanks to Apple screwing up the iTunes update so that Disk Utility can no longer repair permissions, and not posting a fix to help us out. Thanks, Apple.) ...rant rant rant....
The fix is: Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
That should let you run Disk Utilty to Repair Permissions AND keep iTunes 6.02 in the Applications Folder.

  • CANNOT REPAIR PERMISSIONS - pls help!

While booted from my restore disk (with Disk Utility Open & attempting to repair permissions), D.U. goes about 33% of the way & stops/displays the following onscreen message: Disk Utility Internal Error
Disk Utility has lost it's connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility.
I used DiscWarrior to rebuild the directories & then ran TechToolPro 4 from my eDrive to check Volume Structures (came up clean).
For the heckuvit, ran D.U. from my Apps Utility Folder. This time it did complete, making some changes. Ran a second time. Results of each are shown below.

Why is this happening & how can I resolve it?
    Don

This has to do with a problem with the latest update and Panther and iTunes.
    Tip offered by Kappy and others in the 10.3& earlier Forum;
    1) Move iTunes onto the Desktop.
    2) Run Disk Utility
    3) Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all iTunes .pkg files EXCEPT for iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg
    4) empty Trash.
    5) move iTune from Desktop back to 'Applications'.
Hey presto. you should now be able to repair permissions again.
    Offered by Bee;
    Kappy, et all . . .
This was posted earlier today . . .
I'll have to get the author's name, sorry don't have it now.
It seems that it may not necessary to pull iTunes out of the App folder:
Did you recently update your iTunes?
If so, that seems to have caused a bit of a problem with Panther.
    If that is the case,
Go to HD>Library>Receipts and trash all ITunes .pkg files
EXCEPT iTunesX.pkg and iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg. Then see if you can repair permissions.
Be very careful here, be sure to leave the last two there!
    Cheers!

If the answer to upgrading to Tiger recently is YES, and you have itunes 6.0 and up then remove the extra files as directed below:

  • ITunes Installation Problem (it won't install!)

I'm trying to install iTunes onto my computer, and I'm getting through all of the steps until the step "Installation Type." At that step iTunes is greyed out and the action is "skip." It will not let me select it, and then when I try to move forward and install it says "You cannot continue. There is nothing to install."
    Please help me.
    Thanks.

Hi Sheparro, I might have good news for you. Had EXACTLY the same problem. My iTunes (7.0.1) was cutting off when playing CDs, so I decided to reinstall it. Deleted all iTunes related files (via spotlight), then attempted to install the downloaded 7.x version afresh. No way. Tried the original iLife disc, still no way; gave the same reply as you got. Then I fished for more itunes files on my system and found three in the Receipts folder (located within the Library folder): itunesX.pkg, itunesphonedriver.pkg, itunesx.pkg. I moved these to the trash and then tried installing from the iLife CD again. Presto! It worked! Its the 6.0.2 version, but no problem. I suspect the upgrade (7.x) has some unfixed bugs. Good luck!
