ITunesU Public Site Manager opinion input.

I know I'm pretty late to the game here, but I recently realized we needed to migrate over to the PSM in a few weeks. Originally I thought it was a new tool to manage your site (vs doing it through itunes) turns out its a completely new system.
Questions:
In our current public site we organized by colleges/+ a few stragglers. Each local tech was an admin over his section (will edit access) and instructors were given upload access (based on ldap groups). It appears that the new PSM has taken this concept and tossed it (along with the local authentication). How are large (or small) dealing with this lack of granular control.
I know I for one do not want to play gate keeper for all content, and before delegating that responsibility closer to the content creators usually solved the issue.

Well, i guess from your point of view the new system might work well, but there are a lot of institutions out there that may need a more hierarchical system. And on the other hand, the PSM has some disadvantages working as a contributor. In my case I have to login after every upload of an feed because the system kicks me out! I'm not able to edit my collections, set the mediaformat, crosslink SD-HD-Audio or to select a special theme.
So there are some points in the PSM that really need more features!

  • Itunes u support for public site manager

I have been the iTunes U admin for my college for years - since iTunes U first started. I cannot log into the public site manager - it refuses to acknowledge my credentials, even though I can log into my institutions iTunesU site directly through iTunes. Others have reported the same problem with no solution. Who can I call to get this fixed?

  • I Tunes U Public Site Manager not updating Provider-Hosted Feed

    1. This morning I deleted a Provider-Hosted feed from the collections.
    2. I edited the file changing the feed graphic and the <itunesu:category itunesu:code=”000” />. I used 3 or 4 variations of 3 and 6 digit codes in the item. I wanted to see how the i Tunes U Public Site Manager was using the tag.
    3. The rest of the items were not changed.
    4. Code checked at feed validator--valid.
    5. Opened iTunes Public Site Manager > Collections > Add Collections.
    6. Feed added. Only showed up in Business Category although one item was tagged 100.
    7. Deleted feed again. Repeated 2 - 5. The interface moves like there is something happening,
then the page refreshes and there is no new feed in the list - collections page.
    8. Rechecked with feed validator. Repeated Step 5. Same issue.
    9. Changed feed name, rechecked with feed validator, repeated step 5. Same issue.
(Feeds appear to upload but are not listed.)
    10. Thinking perhaps a cookie issue I changed machines and had the same results.
    11. Currently we cannot add any Provider hosted feeds.

We are investigating the slowness, but we haven't been able to reproduce the situation where you cannot add "Apple-Hosted Feed". While we continue investigating, we wanted to let you try this again to see if you can get thru this time. Perhaps the issue had something to do with the condition particular to the time period. Can you give it a try and let us know?

  • Public Site Manager - GIF files

It appears the PSM will only accept JPG or PNG files for album art. Since our current site uses GIF file in many feeds, I assume I'll have to convert all to a supported format. Question: Do I also have to manually replace each image that was manually uploaded to our iTunes U site?
Or will the new PSM pull all images from rss feeds and trash any manually uploaded images from our old iTunes U site?
    thanks

iTunes U Public Site Manager copies course images from your original course pages, *except for feed groups*, and displays the images in your new collection pages as collection art. For collections created from a feed group in your original site, include image details within the feed itself. iTunes U Public Site Manager uses elements within the feed to populate your collection page.

  • Odd Behavior in Public Site Manager

    Greetings All;
Is anyone else experiencing unusual behavior in Public Site Manager?  Specifically, after I created a new Collection and
began to add content, I began to get a "Sorry, this page is currently being edited. Please try again later." message.
Also, my session seems to "time out" almost immediately.

Hi Duncan - I work with about six collections in Wellesley College's iTunes U site. Is there any specific information that might help you?
Late last afternoon around 2-3, I was able to publish my item (essentially by going to the item which was already visible in the collection and resaving it/signing out very quickly before the timeout had a chance to get me.) After that, I had noticed that the timeouts were no longer occuring as quickly, but the next time I logged in I got an odd error when I clicked the "return to collections manager" link. Unfortunately I did not think to copy the error, though it was a white page and looked like some sort of script error.
However, when I went back to take a screenshot of it today, everything looks fine as far as I can see. No unnaturally quick timeouts or links throwing errors. (I do still get the "sorry, currently being edited" if I close the browser on a collection without properly signing out, but as far as I'm aware that is normal.)
I will try to find some new content to upload and report back if there are any problems with that. But for now it looks like we're fine here.
Best of luck with your own, Syd.

  • Public Site Manager Required to Publish?

Currently our site is stuck in the pre-approved status. My quess is that it's waiting on categories to be assigned, but will the site need to be converted to the Public Site Manager to be included in the iTunes store?

I thought it was taking forever for our site to be approved too. I logged into the private site and went to 'Edit Site Settings', which is where I originally submitted our site for inclusion in the iTunes Store, and there was a message waiting for me there. You may want to check there if it's been a month or two. Once I followed the steps provided I was able to access the Public Site Manager which is a whole other beast designed to manage the Public site separately. Once I completed the steps waiting for me, the message disappeared so I can't tell you exactly what it said (it's been a while too, sorry). Hopefully you have something waiting to prompt you into the next phase. Good luck!!

  • Public site manager

I need to edit my original application for public site manager. How do I do this?

    Hello, Graham.
A similar situation happened here a few days ago.
I published an iTunes U course, not a collection, at 6:00 PM Thursday, June 26. It still did not show up in iTunes U Store or in our college's iTunes U site at 8:00 AM Monday, June 30. (I checked multiple times a day.) That was after over 80 hours.
I filled up a support request form in this web site: https://ssl.apple.com/support/itunes-u/public-site-manager/contact.html around 9:00 AM on Monday, June 30. Credit to Apple PSM Support, I got a reply around noon the same day informing me they did see the iTunes U Course up. I checked and it did become available in both places. So it took 80+ hours from the time it was published to the time it became available in iTunes U store and in our site.
We have over 120 courses and collections. It usually takes an hour or so and at most 24 hours for one course/collection to become available. It never needed more than a day, but this time more than 3 days.
So be patient. And you may fill up the support form also to let Apple iTunes U PSM Support team be aware.
    Best.

  • Need to move old private site to public site manager

Rutgers would like to move all or at least most of the content of our old private site to public site manager. How do I do that?

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Locked out of Admin Acct in Public Site Manager

While trying to set up our Course Manager I managed to lock myself out of my Public Site Manager.
The last thing I did was follow some directions in the discussion forum that told me to add my Admin name as a Contributer in the PSM which I did, now when I try to log in as an Admin I get tossed into this loop.
Your Apple ID provides you with access to more than one site. To sign in, select a site name in the list below.
    site.edu
    site.edu
Both of those links bring me back to the main log in page where I get a message that says
    Service temporarily unavailable
This has been going on since Friday. I reached out to our Apple iTunes U rep, and have not heard back from him.
    Any advice from the community?
    Thank you!

My issues was resolved by a Apple iTunes U manager, it was a back end issue.
    I'm back into my site.

  • Beginning Public Site Manager

Where is the link to request the Public Site Manager? Is it supposed to be on the right side when you log in as an admin?
We are not yet listed in the iTunes U "Store" so I submitted a inclusion request last Wednesday (pre-approval status), which is supposed to make the link to Public Site Manager appear, correct?
    Thanks.

Clicking the "Consider this Site for Inclusion..." button in the Edit Site Settings area of your site will notify us of your interest in creating a public site and using iTunes U Public Site Manager. We will enable migration for your site within 72 hours. We understand that you are looking to get access to iTunes U Public Site Manager. Your site will not be published to the iTunes Store. You will ultimately do this yourself in iTunes U Public Site Manager.

  • Accessing Public Site Manager

I've successfully migrated and published our site using Public Site Manager. How do I access PSM in order to edit the public site? When I use the admin log in the page no longer has a Public Site Manager link as it did before publishing.

The Sign In URL is the same for all iTunes U Public Site Manager sites and is: https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/DZStudio.woa/wa/SignIn

  • Custom Categories in Public Site Manager

    Hello,
I'm currently working on transitioning our school's site using the new Public Site Manager. I understand how tagging works, building collections, categories, and tag lists. However, I've been unable to create custom categories so I'm able to best organize our content. I've read the admin guide. I keep coming back to 'How to Categorize Content' and 'Specifying an Initial Category and Sub-category', however, can't seem to find how to create my own categories. Am I overlooking instructions for customizing categories so I can properly tag our content? Any assistance in getting to this point would be amazing.
    Thanks!!
    Nikki

Ok, so I finally figured this part out. Go to 'Collections' and properly tag all of your content. Then go to 'Pages' and under 'Provider Page', click on the title of your institution. Under Text Lists choose to 'Add List'. Click the gear icon to edit. Give your tags a title and select everything you want to live under that section. The tags will move from 'Tags' to 'Selected Tags'. Choose Done. Now I have what I was referring to as Custom Categories, these Tag Lists appear in addition to the default categories Apple makes available to you. If you have any tags that aren't associated with a Tag List they will appear at the bottom of the 'Pages' page and it will show an 'Inactive' status for each specific tag that isn't properly associated yet. It was kinda freaking me out that there was a message saying that the following pages are inactive or scheduled to be deleted. You just need to follow through with creating a Tag List for them. I think getting used to the new terminology was hanging me up a little bit, but slowly it's all starting to make sense.
I hope this helps some of you out there who are also getting started.

  • I cannot Publish my site after using the Publish Public Site Manager. An error, with no explanation is returned.

The problem we’re having has to do with transitioning our existing Easter I Tunes U site over to an iTunes U Public site as the instructions below tell us to do.
    -          I can access the itunes U Public Site Manager fine with my ID.
    -          I was able to make some changes to our existing site to get it ready for publishing it to the iTunes U public site format.
    -          I can preview our existing site as a new Public Site fine from within the Public Site Manager application.
    -          However, when I try to Publish it I get an error that says :   An error has occurred during the publishing of your content. Try again
Looking for some support to tell me what we’re not doing correctly to migrate our existing site over.

    Here are the answers
Eastern CT State University is no longer in the iTunes U directory .    r
The have not migrated their site to iTunes U Public Site Manager. Starting June 2010 we notified all iTunes U site administrators for any site in the iTunes store that they would need to migrate their existing site to iTunes U Public Site Manager in the future. In Feb. 2011 we notified them that the deadline for migration would be April 2011 and that if they had not migrated their site would no longer appear on the list.
For Eastern CT State University to return to the list, they just need to transition over to an iTunes U Public Site Manager based site. Information on how to do so can be found here -http://deimos.apple.com/rsrc/doc/UsingiTunesUPublicSiteManager/CommonQuestions/c hapter_14_section_2.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/iTUPSM-CH5-SW2

    Nick Good ?uestion!
I am the New Admin for The University of New Orleans, and after reading the response to your initial question I think we fall into the category of needing to migrate to Public site manager. But looking at the tutorial which is mainly text, I cannot follow the instructions. Do you have a screen shot of what step two because I cannot find the " iTunes U Public Site Manager in the Tools area."
    Thank you!
