Ive recently purchased an airport express

Ive recently purchased an airport express and attached an external hard drive. I have set it up as per instructions and it appears in my aiport utility but when I try and open the hard drive in i photo to access the library, it is not under the shared bit. Not sure what ive done wrong. Can anyone help please?

The AirPort Express will not support a hard drive. It only supports a USB printer.
You need an AirPort Extreme if you want to connect a hard drive.
If you really meant to say that you have an AirPort Extreme, make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Some drives require using a powered USB hub with the AirPort Extreme....even if the hard drive has its own power supply.

  • Purchasing an Airport Express card...Is this the right move?

    Hey Folks,
I've recently been given an older iMac (it's the all in one purple one from around 99-2000) i talked to two different apple employees in two different stores (chicago and milwaukee) the concensus sounds like i need to purchase the "airport express card" and open up the hatch and install it manually in order to get the wirless internet that is already hooked up in my apartment builing. Is this the right purchase? i'm not clear on if this mac is airport ready, and am worried that 120 bucks later i will find out the hard way, any suggestions/advice?
    thanks everyone!

Jason my model is most certainly the Mac Rev C, i copied and pasted the information available below, turns out it is the Grape Imac, what does this mean for my wireless connectivity, and does this change my purchasing options, thank you so much for you help!

In addition to RyanJC's comments, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) can store up to five different http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108081 configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • I am considering purchase of Airport Express to extend / improve my network at home. I have read that AE will not work with a non apple set up. Does this mean my BT Homehub will not work with AE?

I have poor router connection to my iphone in one part of my three storey home. I have a BT Homehub router. I am considering purchase of Airport Express to improve my network connection. Will AE function with the Homehub.  I have read that it may not! Any advice please?
    Geoff Snr

The AirPort Express will work with the Homehub if you establish a permanent Ethernet connection from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Homehub to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
The AirPort Express will not work if you are planning to connect the Express to the Homehub wirelessly to extend the network.

I recently purchased a airport time capsule. My current router offer duel band. Does the Airport offer duel band

The Time Capsule automatically  broadcasts a simultaneous dual band wireless signal. Wireless devices will connect to the band with the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the Time Capsule.

  • I recently purchased an airport extreme base station. I want to replace my older linksys wireless router. I had a successful set up but can not get it to talk to broadband modem, I am missing something but what?

I recently purchased an airport extreme to replace my older linksys wireless router. had a successful set up but can not get connected to the internet. for some reason, which I am sure is apparent to others, i am missing some needed info to connect to the dsl broadband modem that I have.  would love some good tips.

    Try this:
Turn off or remove power from the DSL model, the router, and your computer. Wait not less than one minute. Restore power to the modem and wait until the status lights indicate a connection to the ISP. Next, restore power to the router and wait until the status light shows connection to the modem. Last, turn on the computer. Check your Network preferences to be sure they are configured for a DHCP connection and that the router has received a valid IP address (not 169.xxx.xxx.xxx).

  • I'm using iTunes 9 and I recently just bought AirPort Express. I have used it before in the past put the problem I have now is that I cannot select the Express network for my speakers. Does Airport Express only work with iTunes 10 or 11?

    Hello Hornet12,
Indeed, iTunes 10.2 or later will be required to utilize AirPlay.
    Using AirPlay
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4437
    AirPlay requirements and capabilities
To get full AirPlay features, make sure your AirPlay-enabled devices are running the latest software updates. The table below identifies minimum AirPlay requirements and capabilities:
    Stream content from
    Requirement
    Notes
    iPad
    iOS 4.3 or later.1
From the Videos, iPod, Photos, Music, and YouTube apps on iOS devices, stream videos, music, and photos to an Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation), or stream music to an AirPort Express or compatible third-party device.
With iOS 4.3 and later, you can also stream video and audio from a website or a third-party app installed on your iOS device if the developer for the app or website has added AirPlay functionality.
    iPhone (3GS or later)
    iPod touch
    (2nd generation or later)
    Computer
    iTunes 10.2 or later.
Stream videos and music from your iTunes library to an Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation), or music to an AirPort Express or compatible third-party device.
    Apple TV
Apple TV software version 5.1 or later.
Stream music from your Apple TV to another Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation), to an AirPort Express or compatible third-party device.
    Cheers,

  • I have a 5 year old Dell PC and purchased the Airport Express last year.  After one of the iphone 4s updates I lost the contact and cannot reestablish.  I have even tried to hard wire from my router to the airport express and I cannot connect.

I have a 5 year old Dell PC and purchased Airport Express last year.  I used my iphone 4s to connect and it has been working until recently I lost connection after one of the iphone updates.  I cannot make contact with the unit.  I have even used an ethernet cable that I hooked to my router and still won't work.  I cantinually get this message from Airport Utility.  An error has occurred and I can not do anything else.

If you have the AirPort Express setup in Bridge Mode, try changing the Connection Sharing setting to "Share a public IP address"
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address
    Update
You will probably get a message about a Double NAT error. Click to "ignore"
This setting might allow mutliple devices to connect and may not. It's worth a try...I have about a 60-70% success rate at hotels with this setting.
Unfortunately, as you note....hotels have become a lot smarter about connections to their network. At some point, they probably will not even allow another router to connect at all.

  • If i already own a mac laptop and apple tv do i need to purchase the airport express as well?

we already own a macbook, ipad, apple tv and iphone...do we need to purchase airport express as another item?

If you already have a router, then AEX is unnecessary, unless:
You like to stream music from your macbook to your home theater without running your apple tv or tv, period - AEX has an optical audio line out amd can stream lossless signal from iTunes.
Your iPad won't be able to do that because it will require Apple Tv in the middle whcih is, I assume, already connected to your home theater anyway.
    or
you want to have other speakers around the house or outdoors to play music from your macbook too
I use AEX to play in my garage, plus it extends the coverage of my WIFI a bit furter around that side of the house.

  • Do I need to purchase an airport express card if I have a sony vio that is 3 years old?

Do I need to purchase an airport card?

The AirPort Extreme card is designed to work only with certain Mac models. There is neither a version that works with PC, nor does your Vaio require it. If your Vaio does not have built-in wireless, one option would be to get a wireless USB adapter.

  • I just purchased an airport express to boost

the signal of my fios to other parts of my house (to connect to the many iPads and iPhones we have as well).  While setting it up I continually get an unexpected error has occurred - any help?

AirPort Express cannot "extend" the signal from a FIOS router if you are tying to do this wirelessly.
Apple routers only talk to other Apple routers in this regard.
The AirPort Express can "extend" the signal if you establish a permanent Ethernet cable connection between the FIOS router and AirPort Express.

  • I recently bought an airport express and tried to set it up through my iphone5 wifi settings but the airport setup does not show up. Is the problem with the airport express itself?

Nothing comes up in the airport utilities app either. The amber light continuously blinks. I also tried connecting an ethernet cord.

We have a netgear n150 router in our house as well but it doesn't connect to my phone or MacBook. That's connected to a Windows PC.
Is this Netgear router your "main" wireless router? That is, is it connected directly to the Motorola modem by Ethernet? Which exact model of the AirPort Express do you have? How do you have the Express configured to work with the Netgear?

  • If I purchase the Airport Express, does it allow me to get free internet or do I need a plan?

I am planning to get an Apple Airport Express. However, I was wondering if you need an internet plan or does it supply its own internet?

Once you have the AirPort Express, you will need to do the following:
    1) Sign up for an Internet connection plan with an Internet Service Provider (ISP)
    2) Connect the AirPort Express to a broadband modem
Most Internet Service Providers will supply you with a modem free of charge if you sign up for a year or more of service.
