Iweb '08 and Personal Domain/GoDaddy

I had a terrible time with this before and so gave up and used domain forwarding but now I wanted to try again. I researched here in the forums because I remember that there were a LOT of threads about it. I found this Step by step:
1. Login into your Godaddy account
2. Click on Manage Domains and click on your domain name
3. Click on the "Total DNS" link
4. Under Host click on the edit link for "www"
5. For "Alias Name" use: www
6. For 'Points to Host Name" use: web.mac.com
7. Click "Ok"
8. Should update within 24 hours
9. Mine was updated overnight
But trying to follow it still gave me error messages at godaddy. I finally called them and realized what the problem was for me. After you do step 3 and are presented with the Total DNS panel, the first window says A(Host)Host and that is NOT what you want.
The second window says CNAMES(Aliases)Host and that IS the one you want. You see WWW is the first in the list in that box. Follow the line all the way over to the right and click on the PENCIL and then follow steps 5-7.
Just adding this in case anyone was still having problems like I did.

Thank you very much for this post!

How to set up your iWeb and personal domain names, How do you get your iWeb DNS. tHANKS

Mac/iWeb and domainnames have nothing to do with each other.
Your domainname is related to your webserver. With or without iWeb.
And there is no such thing as an iWeb DNS.
Check where you have your webhosting and domainname registered.
And in case the message did not get across, MobileMe ends at the end of this month. And so does Personal Domain, which is a MMe feature.

  • IWeb and personal domain

Is it possible to create a website using iWeb and upload it to personal domain (www.mydomain.com) without Mobile Me?

    Yes, you can.
Sign up at a webhost, with or without a domainname, and publish.
Before you do, you can practice on your own computer :
    http://www.wyodor.net/Tutorials/iWebDemo/sFTP.html
And you don't upload to a personal domain. You upload to a server.
And browse this forum. It has been discussed several times a day every day since June last year.

  • Adding mobileme gallery content in iWeb with a personal domain

I've been building gorgeous looking pages in iWeb this year which I have attached to a personal domain.
I'm having trouble adding a movie that I have published on my mobileme gallery as widget is telling me there is nothing available. Could this be because I have iWeb pointed towards my own domain even though it's hosted by mobileme?
I'm confused and really want to add this video as something over than through a hyperlink.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul.

    Paul:
If you have a MMe gallery that you want separate from the others but still have viewable in an iWeb site and page set its setting in iPhoto to be hidden from the rest of the gallery:
Visit the gallery online and copy it's URL address. Add that address to iFrame code in an HTML snippet as I've done in this demo page: MobileMe Galleries and Quicktime Movies (the code is shown on the page). You can set the gallery to disiplay in any of the availablemodes, grid, mosaic, etc., by using the URL for that mode.
The visitor can view the gallery but will not be able to go to your other galleries. Just a way to post a single gallery to your web page.

  • Uploading iWeb site to personal domain via FTP client (NOT .MAC)

    Hello,
I want to upload my iweb created website to my personal domain, in other words I do not want my domain to point to my .mac address.
I am downloading Cyberduck as my FTP client. Will I just send my whole "site" folder to my public folder at my personal domain? Will it be in the right order? How will I update each day? (Can I set up iWeb so that when I click "publish" it will update my personal domain?)
I was planning on using some wordpress plugins to modify my site. Will this work? I am totally lost, I had no idea I needed so much background info to blog outside of .mac! I guess I just want to design with iweb, and be able to use all the tools of my AN Hosting and wordpress.
Thanks for your help in advance!

Will I just send my whole "site" folder to my public folder at my personal domain?
You send the folder created by iWeb which has the same name as you gave your site inside the iWeb app, plus the index.html file which iWeb created alongside that folder.
How will I update each day?
By publishing again to a folder and uploading again via ftp.
(Can I set up iWeb so that when I click "publish" it will update my personal domain?)
No. If iWeb could do that you would not need an ftp program to start with.
I was planning on using some wordpress plugins to modify my site.
No idea, but generally speaking modifying iWeb to add stuff requires manual editing of the html after publishing and redoing it every time you republish.

  • HELP! Can I view a site I created with iWeb using a personal domain?

Sorry in advance if this question has already been addressed. I too am sort of a newbie to iWeb. I just purchased a domain name through Google Apps. I would like to create my website through iWeb using the domain name ("www.youngvoters08.com") that I already purchased through Google Apps.
At this point, I'm incredibly confused. Is it possible to type in my domain URL (that I purchased through Google Apps) and have my iWeb website come up? I set up my personal domain through .Mac and I even tried publishing its contents to a folder (that was even more confusing). The personal domain option says it will take up to 48 hours to link to my domain.
All I want for Christmas is to be able to type in "www.youngvoters08.com" and be directed to the site I created on iWeb (as opposed to creating my site through Google Apps). Is this at all possible? And does it require me to be patient for 48 hours?
I'm afraid that the .Mac personal domain option means that I have to have already created a website with another service provider, and it doesn't mean that the personal domain I already purchased ("www.youngvoters08.com") will take me to the website I created through iWeb. I'm also weary that I wasted $10.00 by buying a personal domain through Google Apps, especially if I cannot create the contents of my website through iWeb.
Did that make any sense at all??? (Sorry for the confusion and redundancy:)

If you have both sites on one domain file - that is they both load into iWeb at once - click on the name of site 2 in the sidebar and drag it to the top of the list so that it is now in the #1 position. Now do a "Publish all to .Mac".
Your domain name URL is being directed to the index.html file in the Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites folder. This file opens the site that is at the top of the list in iWeb or, if you are publishing your sites individually, the last site that you uploaded.

  • Multiple sites and personal domain

    Hi everyone!
I'm having a problem with iWeb 08. Here's the details:
Using iWebsite and iWeb '08 I've created 2 websites, one for personal use and one for my business.
Now I'm interested in buying a personal domain for my business website.
How can I do to set the personal domain only to my business site, leaving the personal one unchanged?
    Cheers,
    Samuele

An easy way to manage multiple sites is either iWebSites or MultiSite.
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want. Works for me.

  • Hosting .Mac and Personal Domain Separately - Help!

    Hi,
I have three websites I have made using iWeb, and one personal domain. I would like to host two of the sites only on .Mac, and host the third site on the personal domain. I set up the CNAME and it works but I do not want two of the sites to be linked to the personal domain.
Is there a way to do this?
Should I copy iWeb and use the copy for one or the other?
Can I separate the website files or something?
    Thanks in advance!

When I go to mysite.com, the iWeb page I want shows up, and I can go through the pages of the site. But if I type in mysite.com/site2.html or mysite.com/site3.html my other sites come up. I don't want those two sites to be accessible from mysite.com.
    Thanks for the clarification.
Of course one has to know the names of your other sites in order to access them.
Some ways to divorce them more totally might to
    +password protect them
+purchase another .Mac account (or use a family account) for them
+manually move them to iDisk/Sites. Then they would have the url homepage.mac.com/username/sitename (not sure all features would work).
PS A further option might be to use ordinary forwarding plus masking instead of CNAME. When you do that, your personal url is sent to your longer .Mac url, web.mac.com/username/sitename. I don't know what happens when you try to type in a different sitename after the personal name.

  • .mac and personal domain question

I'm sure this has been addressed several times, although, I can't find the answer in a quick search...
I set-up a personal domain on my account. I have several websites going in iWeb, however. Can I still host my personal domain on .mac, but still publish my other sites to my .mac url? How do I switch back-n-forth between my .mac url and my personal domain without messing things up?!
Thanks so much for the help!
    Cheers,

How do I switch iWeb to publish to my .mac rather than my personal domain? Is that possible?
iWeb always publishes to .Mac, nowhere else, regardless of what it says somewhere in the app. You can always reach all your sites via the url http://web.mac.com/username/sitename.

  • Subscribe button and personal domain name

    Hi,
Is the subscribe button on my podcast page still supposed to work if I publish to .mac using my personal domain name? It doesn't seem to work for my pages. Here are two pages where the subscribe button is invalid:
    http://web.mac.com/SHIRTLESS/POETRY/POETRY_PODCASTS/Archive.html
    http://web.mac.com/SHIRTLESS/POETRY/POETRYPODCASTS/POETRYPODCASTS.html
If anyone can solve this problem, many thanks.
    regards,
    shirtless

Yes, because you are publishing to .Mac and just forwarding to a personal domain. Some things don't work when you use ftp to publish directly.
Have you made sure that all the correct boxes are checked inside the Inspector in iWeb that are relevant to the podcast page?

  • How do I publish from iWeb to my personal domain

Can someone tell me the exact steps I have to take to modify iWeb to publish my albums to my Personl domain. I found some instaruction about going to my domain cPanel and adding a new CNAME. The problem is that it asks for a NAME and a CNAME and I don't know what to put there. Now do I know to modify iWeb to replce the std "gallery.me.com"   I don't know what to change that too.
    My cPanel  asks for...
    Add a CNAME Record
    Name:
    CNAME:
If my domanname is www.peter.com, what do I use in the name field ?  What should the CNAME be also ?
This is supposed to, after correcting iWeb, allow and iWeb publish to my personal domain.
    Can anyone help me withthis?
    TIA,
    Peter

Your original post did not in fact state anywhere that you had a MobileMe account.
Also, you seem to be getting a little confused here with terminology which does make a difference.
Rather than a domain, what you in fact have is a domain name that is registered through hostpapa.com - it is not hosted as you say, but registered with them.
Also, iWeb will not and does not 'publish directly to your own domain'.  iWeb cannot publish to a domain name or anything - you need a hosting account to be able to publish a website - do you have this?  If not, then you will need to purcahse hosting too.
So, if you want to publish your site directly to hostpapa instead of MobileMe, then CNAME is NOT involved in this at all - you DON'T need it.  CNAME is only a method of forwarding that you would use to forward your domain name to web.me.com when published on MobileMe.  If you do not want to use MobileMe any longer, then you don't need this.
So you say that you have registered a domain name with hostpapa?  Do you also have a hosting account with them too if they provide hosting?  If not, then you need to purcahse a hosting account from either them or some other company that provides hosting.
When you have your hosting account and assuming that you are using iWeb 09, open iWeb and then click on your site name and your publishing options with become available in the drop down menu - rather than picking publish to MobileMe, select the publish to ftp option instead and fill in your details such as ftp name, username and password and then upload your site after testing your connection.
If you are using iWeb 08, then you'll need to publish to a local folder and use Cyberduck or Yummy ftp etc to upload your site to your server instead.
CNAME is not involved and if you purcahse hosting from another company other than hostpapa, then you will probably have to alter your nameservers so that they point to where your site is now hosted.
If you want to ditch MobileMe, then you don't need to use CNAME at all - it just isn't involved here.

  • .mac Hosting and Personal domain

    Any help?
I bought a domain name from a registar in Greece and signed up for Google Apps.
The @mydomain.co.gr woks with google mail and I want to keep it like this.
Do I have to buy additional hosting services to be able to publish my site at .mac using www.mydomain.co.gr.
Will my site be at web.mac.com or it must be hosted somewhere else an redirected to .mac?

Chuck, you wrote that "all you should have to do is point the domain name to the .mac address." Can you please explain how? I have been on phone support and email contact with Apple and NOBODY knows how to do this! I kid you not. There are articles on How To but it doesn't work for me. My website does not publish to my personal domain name on iWeb and .mac, despite following the procedural instructions from Apple.
At this point, my website is "published" to mac.com/myusername, but NOT to my personal domain name.
Thanks for any suggestions you can give.

  • Blog and personal domain/store, SEO & other issues

I'm using the blog format to provide helpful tips, dynamic content and general marketing for our online store. The .Mac points to a subdomain, not directly to the site and the content can be viewed through the store pages in a frame (GoLive). I've submitted sitemaps to google for both the store site and blog subdomain and many questions, lots of uncertainity and variable scenarios on this and .Mac versus maybe better SEO friendly options like Wordpress and .Mac's general sluggishness. I like the ease of updating with .Mac and the main reason I have taken the .Mac to personal domain approach was the Search capability.
    1) Is there a way using GoLive or 3rd party option to search for blog content if I simply Published to folder and upload content & pages in the site versus the personal domain approach?
    2) If I update blog content directly to the site, what other steps aside from, resubmitting the sitemap to Google are good SEO practices?
    3) How does the blog via subdomain sitemap/Google content get crawled? So far the visible links appear to correlate to 'Number of Excerpts to Show'. plus the main blog page and archive page. Will submitting the sitemap in a particular level of the blog folders affect the crawling to maximize content discovery?
    4) Does having content in a frame from the subdomain from a .Mac account affect SEO & possibly get into Duplication of Content issues?
    5) Probably more questions to follow depending on logical direction and tweaks...
Any insights, input or tweak suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Another question:
    6) Is there a method to create a sitemap of Blog entry links that you can post on a site? This and other navigation issues are a bit difficult, AFAIK.

  • IWeb 8.0 - personal domain name publishing

I have created a site and published to my MobileMe account and also published - to my personal domain name, to which the site tells me I have successfully published to the new name/site. I click on visit the site - and it comes up as address unknown. Repeatedly - for two days now.
The site is published as can be - and yet, it still does not come up under my personal domain name. It will come up as my .mac.(username) - address, but not the personal name that I want. The domain is active and shows in my MobileMe account as active, so what's the disconnect? What step am I missing?

I dunno, but MobileMe live chat support is now 24/7 — see this announcement. Other Apple support options are here.

  • Blog comments disabled (against my will) and personal domain is not working

Comments on my blog no longer work and if folks use my personal domain, they get a "this page is under construction" message (MobileMe is configured to host your domain is down it appears).
There is another problem: at the end of published pages I see this:
    # Exception: TypeError
    # Message : Value undefined (result of expression postLinks.forEach) is not object.
    # File : Comments.js, Line:138
    Anyone else?

Thanks, Wyodor. I got the domain issue figured out. Looks like my NSI web-forwarding feature expired... but I thought the Mac hosting would replace that. So I turned it back on in the meantime and will check into that issue later.
Meanwhile, comments for my blog are still locked and I am still getting that error at the bottom of the page.
    On safari it says):
    # Exception: TypeError
    # Message : Value undefined (result of expression postLinks.forEach) is not object.
    # File : Comments.js, Line:138
    And on Firefox it says:
    # Exception: TypeError
    # Message : postLinks.forEach is not a function
