IWeb 08 Corrupts old web sites

Just another warning to you folks out there. iWeb corrupts web sites big time. Here's my steps:
1. I have a web site that was (notice I said WAS) 177 MB. I opened it with iWeb 08 and clicked upgrade. Saved it.
2. I then opened it and flipped through the various pages and it was o.k.
Modified the size of an image at the top of my main BLOG page. Hit save again.
3. Reloaded the site, and flipped through the pages and two of them had MISSING FILES (images related to the theme (yes, it was an Apple theme), missing graphics I had added to the page, etc.)
I can easily reproduce this by restoring my backup or using another site file, so it is definitely a HIGH FREQUENCY problem.
Hope this helps you all in the trenches! Hope all addresses this REALLY SOON!

for movies I now upload my movies to google video on private setting, I then embed the code in the same way you would embed a google map or You Tube clip.
It seems to work better than importing the video into iweb

I am running 10.6.8 and using iweb for my web site. After several SEO analysis they all indicate I need H1-6 header tags. After looking at the source code I see there are none in iweb. Are they necessary to add?  Why would one add these tags and how do I add H Tags to iweb? And are there examples to look at? I am slowly learning about simple web design and assumed that iweb was stand alone without having to write code. Is this one of the reasons iweb is no longer supported? Thanks for looking at this!

A simple text page like this:
    Heading
        sub heading
              text paragraph ....
Is traditionally represented by html tags like:
    <h1>Heading</h1>
         <h2>sub heading</h2>
              <p>text paragraph ... </p>
I would guess that the use of h1-h6 tags helps search engines to understand the structure of a page as the tags imply a certain structure.
This can be compared to more generic tags like <div> that could represent any kind of content - and may be what iWeb uses (you'll have to check yourself).
I would generally recommend that you use some kind of up to date blog/site building tool, perhaps Wordpress or Squarespace (I haven't used either one myself) that support current web technologies - this should reduce your SEO issues and make it easier to properly support mobile/tablet users.

  • Time machine and Safari - how to get old web sites saved

    Hi
How can I get my old web sites that were in safari before I had to do a Archive and install, can I look in Time machine or even on a external drive that I saved my full system on?
    Ta

If you did an Achieve and Install the bookmarks might be in the Previous System Folder. You'll find this folder on the main hard drive. There should be a user folder there and you should be able to get your bookmarks from there....It's worth a look see...
    User--->Home Folder--->Library--->Safari folder--->Bookmarks.plist
If you find the Previous System Folder you should look in there and take what you need. You shouldn't let a Previous System Folder hang around. You could run into conflicts.

  • NEED MY OLD WEB SITE REMOVED FROM THE INTERNET

I am no longer with Verizon but my old WEB site is still up and working and is causing problems by people using it and contacting people.  Need help to remove the old WEB site from the internet.
Who do I call for help?

    Hi there,
Not sure why you thought this question belonged in the home networking forum. However, my suggestion would be to log into your old site and add a script to redirect people to your new site. Sorry if that seems obvious but it's a simple approach to the problem.

  • I already have a 10-year-old web site. Instructions for iWeb update?

My web site has been up for ten years. I created it with PageMill 2.0, and now I can't even communicate with it on my new iMac because it's an OS 9 application.
That means I'm going back and forth between my old eMac and this one to try and upgrade. I've created a beautiful new art site in iWeb, and it was 100 x as easy as the first one, but I'm having problems getting it online. After ten years in the search engines, I have people enter at many of my old HTML pages and I need to use all my old web pages to forward to my new site. I don't know how to arrange the different files in the site folder to work together, or what to name them. I have tried adding a piece of code recommended for redirecting a page (meta refresh), but that hasn't worked, even when I have the iWeb files in the same folder. My Mac assumes I'll publish on .mac and that isn't the case. I have published to a folder so far. Anybody have instructions?

Ok, I'm talking to myself here! hahaha! What I was told was this from Mac Fit-it:
“You don't need to point anything at anything. Simply don't change the names of the HTML files as they are right now; that's all.HTML is HTML is HTML. You do not need PageMill to edit pages created in PageMill. HTML is HTML; any HTML editor can edit pages made in any other HTML editor.“
Now, this is terrific news, but I still couldn't figure out how to open the old pages with iWeb. So, I simply made new ones with the old names. I don't have to work with PageMill at all, and I have crisp new easily designed pages to point the way to my new site.
Now if I can just figure out the right meta refresh code (I've come across several) to do the job without giving the search engines a heart attack, and how to arrange them so they work together, I'll be in good shape. Meta refresh has problems, and Java script doesn't pause to see the refresh page. Any ideas?

  • IWeb 09 and web site on MobileMe...

    Hi !
I hope that somebody will be able to tell me how to resolve this issue...
I did reinstall from scratch my MacBookPro and install iLife '11. I didn't use Time Machine to restore backups but choose to reinstall all the softwares that I have. All my documents backup are on my iDisk on MobileMe.
    I did publish a web site with iWeb' 09 at www.marcmartineau.com .
Now, it's time to update this site. There is NO WAy I can open this site with iWeb'11 as it asks me all the time to create a new site or a new page.
Do you know how I can open my old published site with iWeb'11 ?
I just hope that I'm clear with my question... As english is not my native language...
THanks everybody for your help !
    Marc

Firstly, it is still iWeb 09 that you are using - it is iLife 11, but iWeb was not updated so it is still 09 that you are using.
You did make a backup of your site if you have a published site. iWeb will not be able to open a site that has already been published as it has no import facility for html.
If you don't have a backup of your domain.sites files found under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites, then there is nothing you can do except re-build your site from scratch.
Remember the importance of backing up your domain.sites file next time.

  • Iweb,fetch,existing web site

Hi and thanks in advance! I currently have a web site dianabeads.com, which I edit and update through parallel desk top and windows xp and front page. I am trying to figure out how to do it with iweb and fetch so I can get windows off of my mac, I have played with setting up a page in iweb, so easy have opened fetch and viewed my current web site, but when I go to "put" on fetch i cant find where the file (new page) is that I want to transfer. I can be reached at [email protected] thanks again. Tom Bunten

The main reason for not publishing direct from iWeb would be that a lot of people want to optimize and/or add tags.
The three applications that I use for this - WSM, WebCrusher and iWeb SEO tool will all upload to an iDisk with one click to save you the extra steps for drag and drop.
However, if you want to optimize and retain the iWeb features like hit counter, comments etc, you have to publish to MobileMe first anyway. If this is the case, I would agree that there is every good reason for publish direct from iWeb.
If you follow this thread ...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1743049&start=15&tstart=0
.... you will see how Old Toad's brilliant and perceptive mind has opened the door to successfully achieving the seemingly impossible task of optimizing and retaining these features.

  • Using iWeb '09 when web site was built in iWeb'08

I built my web site on iWeb '08 and made frequent changes using Yummy. Last month I upgraded to iWeb '09 and attempted to change the Newsletter page (one of the five pages). The content of the Newsletter page upgraded but I lost my navigation ability at the top of the page. All the other pages have the ability to navigate between each other, but all I have on the Newsletter page is a black dot in the left corner.
    The site is www.windsorseniormensgc.com
I'm afraid to upgrade the rest of the pages for fear of losing the navigation ability for the whole site. Can anyone assist me here?

This usually means you haven't uploaded the feed.xml file. In your case it's probably because the one on the server needs to be updated.
To reassure yourself that everything will be OK, publish your entire site to a local folder and launch it in the browser direct from your hard disk by double clicking the index.html file.
If all is well, republish the whole site and the new feed.xml should sort out the navigation issue.

  • How to access old Web sites that exist in iDisk Sites folder

I have old personal Web sites that still appear to exist on my iDisk, under Home>Sites. But if I can't remember their URL, how do I access them? It seems that if I can see them on iDisk, there ought to be some sort of option to access them or to find the URL. No matter how much I poke around on iDisk, I can't find any way to access these old Web pages. Any idea?
I can download the parts of the site, and I guess I could re-assemble them, but why bother, if they are already set up and sitting on iDisk?

  • IWeb not updating web site.

iWeb started out working okay. I kept a blog and updated it. Then I went on a trip. Even though I had wireless internet the whole time, updating kept failing. No error message, but the update clock would stop after being about one-quarter filled. When I came home, there was no difference.
Although this started months ago (before the whole .Mac to MobileMe changeover), I do believe my recent inability to update my web site is related to it. The reason is that although I can access the last updated version of my web site at "web.me.com/myaccountname", when I go to my current iDisk and open the "sites" folder, it's empty!
Is it possible that my account has not yet been changed over to MobileMe yet? I have already installed all OS updates, including the MobileMe update. My account logs in fine.
    Any ideas?????

Hey maybe you need to replace only the page that was updated, do not change all the published site, try I just did it and it work I have change a page and a file to be downloaded from the web site, now I can see the changes live on the web. this is what I wrote to others.
Hey I have found not a solution but a way to publish without iWeb, Just did it and I have seen the changes on the web site. If you guys want to try:
I have published my updated web site to a folder on my desktop. then open iDisk from the web (where my web sites files are stored for everyone else to see) then open both windows side by side and only replace the files of the updated pages from the desktop folder to the iDisk folder, there is always a file and a folder with the same name. I just replace them, I then checked on the web and Woalah! changes were made. Well... it did work for now without iWeb, not sure if is the right thing to do but if you are brave enough to follow this go ahead and go to bed as I will until the bug is fixed (hopefully tomorrow) then we can go back to normal. Hope is clear and it help! Rog

  • Hi. I made a new version of my web site in Muse and want to "redirect" my old web site to my new one

Hello. When I launch my new web site, how do I redirect the old "home page" to the new "home page"?
There are photos of my dogs online when you search for "traditional red nose American Pit Bull Terriers".
Would I be able to do a "redirect" from my old males page of say a dog named "Thaylen" to the new "Thaylen" page built by Muse?
I like the fact that Google uses my pictures and do not want them to get use to "a broken link" to a photo they would usually show on a search.
    Thank you.

This is not something you would do in Muse, but that needs to be taken care of at the Web Server where you are hosting your website.
You may talk to your old site's host and ask to add redirects to new site's content to avoid landing on broken/outdated pages.
    Thanks,
    Vikas

  • How can I delete old web site designs from Muse CC 2014.1. (13 Aug. 2014)?

Having recently installed the latest update to Muse and been obliged to re-name my web site file I thought it only appropriate to clean up the desktop.  In DW there is a message window where a site can be deleted but I do not see a similiar method in Muse.

    Hi,
You can look your computer for the .muse file of your site and delete it. Once you have deleted it, try to open it from Muse. You will get a pop up, which says the file/site is missing, would you like to remove it from the list. Click yes and it will be gone.
    Regards,

  • Hello Everyone. My old web site needed  a redirect to a "non www version" because of duplicate content. Is the same true for Muse site?

I made a website from Muse and want to launch it.
Question1)Will there be a www version and a non www version like on my current web page built in DW?
I never launched 2 websites. It just needed a "301 redirect" because when I ran a check on my website it said my page ranking was being lowered because there are two versions of my web site on line.
Red Nose American Pit Bull Terriers Sale Humboldt Pit Bulls (www)
Red Nose American Pit Bull Terriers Sale Humboldt Pit Bulls (non www)
    Thank you.
    Tim

    301 redirect was created.
The site is hosted on Godaddy and after 1 or 2 calls I was able to make the redirect. They made it pretty easy.
However I am still not sure if its better to redirect a www. to a non www, or a non www to a www.version of your site.
As long as there is a redirect, the content is not duplicated. That is the main thing I was trying to accomplish.

  • How do I remove old web site when publishing new site with same URL in iweb? Hit replace when publishing new iweb site (so we could have control over changes) but new site name is attached to old via a / after our www address we want to keep.

I hit the replace when publishing the new iweb site (so we could have control over changes - last one was not an apple based site) but new site name is attached to old via a forward slash and underscore after our www address. Makes it very messy with a very long web address.  Original address now followed by iweb site name followed by name of first page? Went for iweb as not that computer literate - all going so well?! Cheers for help in anticipation. Have to get off to work now but be great end to week if we could be sorted tonight. Rupes

Well yes of course, if you try and publish through iWeb there won't be an option to publish without your site folder which is exactly why I told you to download Cyberduck and use Cyberduck to upload your site to your server having published your site from iWeb to a local folder.  That is what you need to do if you don't want your site name to be included in yoru url.
It would have been easier also if you had used Cyberduck initially to connect to your server and delete your old site yourself - at least that way you would have deleted the correct files rather than relying on your hosting service to do it and doing it incorrectly.
Download Cyberduck and then select the publish to a local folder option from iWeb and then use Cyberduck to upload your site to your server, but rather than uploading the whole site folder and separate index file, upload ONLY the contents of your site folder and then your url will be http://www.domain.com/page_name.html.
    It really isn't rocket science!
