IWeb 08 crashes when publishing to folder

I've used iWeb from iLife 06 for a while now without any issues and upgraded to iLife 08 tonight. Unfortunately, when I go to publish my iWeb site to folder, it comes up with an "unknown error". Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

I just found the problem: iWeb 2 doesn't like the QTVR object video. There is no problem with the classics QTVR (panoramas).
To found the source of the problem, look at the last published page. Then, delete it and publish one more time.

  • IWeb crashes when publish to folder.

    Hi,
I'm having some difficulties with iWeb when I try to publish my site to a folder. My site contains among other pages, one that is quite large (a lot of text in mulitple textboxes).
When I tell iWeb to publish to a folder (since I do not have .Mac) it starts thinking and when it's finished publishing the large file it crashes.
I'm not sure wheter the problem is the large file or something else, problem is the crashing. Have not been able to publish my site!!! Realy anoying.
    Hopefully somebody got some suggestions.
    Thanx Mark

might be interesting to copy the "domain" file so you can restore it, delete the suspect page and try to publish that. You can copy the orginal file back if needed.
Good idea to backup that file once in a while anyway.

  • IWeb keeps crashing when publishing to folder

I do all my work and when I publish it to a folder it get through 2 pages then crashes (freezes I have to force quit) and then I lose all my work I try to upload to folder again and it crashes AGAIN. Can someone help.

Make sure you are running the latest version of iWeb - V 2.0.2 - and that you have installed the iLife support update.
Go to Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb and make a backup of the domain.sites2 file.
Quit iWeb, go to Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.iWeb preference file, do a restart of your Mac and, after running Disk Utility to repair permissions, relaunch iWeb.
If this doesn't work you will then have to look at the possibility that your domain file is corrupt.
You can try launching Console.app (in your Utilities folder) and have a look at the crash log to see if you can see what's causing all this.

  • IWeb crashes when I try to publish link to .pdf or .doc

I have published links to documents (pdf/doc) on my iWeb website several times in the past, using MobileMe. But now iWeb crashes when I try to do this. I'm using the "insert hyperlink" function in the inspector. I have found that I can publish a doc by dragging it onto the page. That doesn't crash the program, and it publishes just fine. But I really need to link to a pdf, and nothing I try is working (can't drag pdfs onto iWeb to make links). I have used only 1GB of my 10GB iWeb account, and my subscription is up-to-date. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

If you want to have the PDF viewable as well as downloadable on your page you can do the following:
1 - upload the pdf file to the server.
2 - create a hyperlink to the file on the server.
3 - use the Line to an External Page option in the Inspector/Link/Hyperlink pane.
4 - select or not the option to open the pdf in a new window.
When the link is clicked on the pdf will open in a a new window or not where it can be viewed and downloaded. This way you only have to upload the pdf file once regardless of how many times you reedit the page.

  • IWeb Quits when Publishing - Apple Genius said to Archive & Reinstall

Just spent over an hour with an Apple Genius at the Apple store to see if he could alleviate my problem with iWeb quitting whenever I tried to publish. I've been using iWeb for the last 5 months and have successfully posted hundreds of blog posts and pictures to my site on a .Mac account - but in the last 24 hours, I've been unable to get new posts published because iweb has been crashing prior to finishing the publish request.
I've tried deleting the iWeb preferences in /myname/library/prefernces as well as clearing my cache files and plain old rebooting. Also tried reinstalling the 1.1. update. The Genius reinstalled iWeb at the store and then I updated. Nothing's been fixed. I still crash when I publish. The only possible solution (according to the Genius) is to bite the bullet and do an Archive and Install. Anyone had luck with this?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would go with a second User account first, as suggested by James.
If this doesn't work, I would be thinking corrupt prefs files within the domain file itself....
    1. Quit iWeb
    2. Navigate to the domain file, User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain
    3. CREATE A COPY OF THIS FILE, and then move it to somewhere safe.
    4. Now back to the original, "control+click" (Right click if you have one of those new fangled two button mice (mouses?!?) )
    5. From the pop-up menu, choose "Show Package Contents"
    6. Sort the finder window by "Kind", it brings all of the plist files inside iWeb together.
assets.YourUserName.plist - This one is a regular problem!
    ServerCachedResources.plist
    sharedassets.plist
    deletedComments.YourUserName.plist
I have deleted all of these when having different problems, not specifically iWeb quittting when publishing, I dont think that that has happened to me.
I do have a tendancy to lose blog comments, perhaps deleting these files has caused it.
I also know that once I have deleted them and relaunched iWeb, done a Publish All to .Mac, all of my problems have gone.
The plist files are all recreated the first time you do this.
You may or may not want to try this, but on a copy of your domain.sites file is there anything to lose? Other than your sanity?
You might want to do one at a time or all at once.
Anyway, thats my 2 pence worth, I'm English really!!!

  • Finder crash when opening any Folder

I am a very experienced mac user and this one has me stumped. Im posting here to see if anyone else has this problem.
Finder crashes when opening a folder on the desktop
Finder crashes when using any option from the Go menu (or key combo) except Airdrop.
Once Finder window is open on Airdrop any navigation to home folder or any other folder using side bar causes Finder to crash.
Using Go To Folder causes crash, even on hidden folder like /var
Finder is OK when opening files on desktop
All other apps can browse file system and open/save OK
Google Drive is not present on system (this used to be an issue a long time a go that caused similar symptoms in other threads)
Drop Box is installed. But issue occurs even when dropbox is not running
Using spotlight to open applications still works normally.
Clicking the Finder icon in the Dock results in a non-functional blank window entitled "Window", all tool buttons are disabled.
Repeatedly opening the same folder over and over results in the message "The last time you open Finder, it unexpectedly quite while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? If you choose not to reopen windows, you may have to open and position the windows yourself" Two options "Don't Reopen" and "Reopen". Both buttons have no effect except to dismiss the dialog.
    Steps Taken to fix:
Booted into recovery mode and performed repair disk and Permissions - Finder Still Crashes
Removed finder preference files using terminal
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Recent changes to system:
iTunes 11.4 Installed with normal Software Update.
    Possible Cause of Problem
Found app in iTunes that has File Sharing enabled and has a shared folder. Curious as to what was in the folder i dragged it to my desktop and double clicked. Im not sure if iTunes would have had enough time to copy the contents of the folder before i tried to open the folder. Finder crashed. This was the first time it happened.
iPhone app in iTunes that I picked in was "Ubersense".

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • IWeb crashes when I try to start it

Hey there, I have a 6mos old iMac 2.33 running latest apple software with 2GB RAM but for the life of I can't get iMovie (08) to start up. Each time I try, it makes the little coloured spinning thing comes up and then Activity Monitor tells me it has stopped running. I end up having to force quit each time.
    Any suggestions.

  • Iweb crashes when inserting Divx html snippet

    Hi there,
I am new to iweb but it seems very cool. i have been using the widget feature to paste youtube and bliptv links and works great. But when i try doing the same thing with stage6 links iweb crashes when i click "apply". I prefer stage6's divx format...has anyone been able to make this work? if so how?
    Cheers

thanks for this. You are brilliant for replying, however its still not working even after an uninstall(?)
It works OK on my sons Imac and for the sake of arguments I have created a brand new site and tried to upload with a brand new domain file and it still crashes with the above.
Guess I will either need to speak to Apple Care, connect my Macbook Pro to my sons mac and run in target disc mode to hopefully run disc warrior or if all else fails rebuild the laptop. Such is life.....

  • IWeb Crashes When Trying to Publish

My iWeb has been consistently crashing anytime I try to publish a site. I was hoping updated versions, would correct the problem, but that did not help.
I have repaired permissions and deleted the iWeb plist file, yet iWeb still will not publish to MobileMe. It also crashes when trying to publish to a folder.
    Any ideas?

Tried this solution with plist deletion and permissions repair and just the same, iWeb continues to crash on publish and, it seems, while still logging into mobileme.

  • British MacBook in Argentina - iWeb crashes when attempting to Publish

    Been in Argentina one week.
Updated my website when I got here; already spent one year taking photos in PATAGONIA
and need to update a blog everyday...
I am in an apartment which has Ethernet Broadband via cable modem and am able to pick up a signal from a neighbours Router...no Password needed...its a good signal and am able to get online always.
Whenever I try to Publish All to .Mac iWeb crashes at the same place everytime. The fan inside the MacBook comes on and spins fast like its working hard then when iWeb is Creating Pages it quits.
If I dont get this sorted soon its going out the window...
Is it because Im in a country where I cant update iWeb?
    Any suggestions appreciated.

    Audiogeek
Many thanks for that! I have just spent hours and hours reducing file sizes (912 files)
to sensible kb's rather than MB's. Now when I go to Publish it goes past the place where it crashed always and attempts to actually upload to the server rather than getting stumped at the creating page stage.
It is taking a very long time and has crashed once already where it got fouled trying to upload
a .pdf file I have for people to download off my site. All my image files are below a megabyte now...
some below 500kb's. The pdf's are around 3MB's and there's quite a few of them.
Maybe my photos should be 30k each?
Maybe Ive got to really shrink everything down?
Broadband in Buenos Aires is 5 times faster than Broadband in Patagonia (so you imagine what Im up against). Normal 56k Snailbands used to take me 10 minutes just to log onto my email provider and sometimes an hour to just read and reply to one email.
Broadband in Buenos Aires must be 10 slower than Britain?
Many thanks to you and everyoen else for helping...this problem must be a size thing!

  • IWeb crashes when trying to publish blog. NOT trysfwordprocessing problem.

I have 2 sites published in MobileMe. Both have a blog, some photo pages, and an info page.
Everything was working perfectly until today.
    One site is working OK.
But in the other, I cannot publish new entries or modify anything in the blog. Every time I try to publish in that blog iWeb crashes. It stalls "creating page" and then crashes.
I can modify the photo pages in this site. The problem seems to be in the blog.
The blog in the other site is working fine.
The blog with the problem has the Kids Pink blog template.
    Help!

First of all, try the trouble shooting steps under "Fix iWeb" here....

  • Iweb crashes when I save

I have just updated some pages on my existing website and successfully published the site. However when I went to save the changes it says 'The document “Domain.sites2” could not be saved.' So I reebooted and tested by making 1 or 2 amendments, select save and now iweb crashes everytime. I have tried swapping the domain.site for an older one in Time Machine but iweb still keeps crashing on save. Help !

Move your domain file to the desktop, launch iWeb, create a new site, add some stuff and see if you can save. If not then delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, and try again.
If you can save the new domain file the first time, delete the iWeb preference file, move your original domain file back to the default location, open it and try again. If still a no go, copy the domain file to the Shared folder, log into another account, open the domain file with iWeb there and see if you can save. If not then a reinstall of iWeb seems warranted. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iWeb" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder.
If you can save OK in the other account then the problem lies in your primary account. If that's the case it could be a preference file other than iPhoto's. Here's how to determine if that's the case:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.

The the following sampling of things that have been suggested in the past. Any one of these things might help, since there are so many reasons why this might be happening.
    1. Delete your iWeb preferences file at

    2. Repair permissions on your startup disk with Disk Utility
    3. Restart your computer.

  • IWeb crashed while publishing & will not re-open

Sounds like others have had issues with iWeb 3.0 crashing when trying to publish with FTP. Mine is worse. It crashed when I tried to publish (not to MobileMe, www.GlacierSeaKayak.com) and will not re-open without crashing immediately. I upgraded to Leopard 10.5.6 (lots of issues with Mail) just before upgrading to iLife '09 & iWork '09. Has anyone found any solutions? How can I get this software to stay open? and then (sounds like this might be tougher) publish successfully to my site? I have several sites I have been working on & am anxious to get them up & running. Thanks.

Wow, thanks for the quick response. I don't know whether or not I can publish to a local folder since iWeb won't stay open for more than a second.
I did delete the plist & re-booted, but no luck keeping it open.
