IWeb 1.1 is totally useless - avoid it
I upgraded to iWeb 1.1 yesterday and since then I have been totally unable to publish my two web sites.
I am getting continual errors of all kinds, for instance :-
Halfway through the upload I am told the internet connection is not available, so it fails.
or
My iDisk quotas can't be read (which they clear can as I can see them in iWeb)
or
It fails loading an image (never the same one each time I try)
or
I get another error message with some gibberish and a long file name.
Basically I have not been able to publish anything since the upgrade.
Also when I check the network traffic while it is trying to do the upload, once it fails the traffic continues and it still uploads data, but what? iWeb continues to send data even after it had errored and says it has stopped.
I have tried creating a new site and still get the same issues, fails at some point in the upload.
This is a really terrible update and I only hope I can reinstall iWeb 1.0 and republish my sites that way.
Ian
Yeah. I can totally understand your frustration.
I think with regards to support it is tricky. As someone who has had to give technical support on many occasions it becomes difficult to pin down when the problems are not across the board. So some people have no problems and others like yourself have quite a few. If everyone had the same problems you can pin down the issue pretty much straight away by looking for the common factors.
I think that is what makes this tricky. Its the fact that not everyone is having the same issues.
What is unique about this update is it is actually structured more like an upgrade than an update as it is adding new features. If it was just addressing issues with existing features it would probably be relatively problem free but as they have added new features there is only a certain amount of testing they can do. As someone who has had experience with this. Trust me there are many problems which only become apparent after release. I am not saying that makes it okay by any means.
Usually in these instances with any regular upgrade it would be given to beta testers for a significant period of time but this is something that is seldom possible with an update due to time constraints and user demand.
What you may find, is an iWeb 1.1.1 update very soon.
So I completely understand your frustrations. I really do. Its just as someone who hasn't really come across any issues (yet at least) I can't complain about this update.

The old calender iOS6, in the year view, it shows how much busy I am in a day by indicating the color intensity. But the new calendar year view is totally useless!!! also too bright!! Why apple does this?? What is the way to revert the calendar back???
Unfortunately, that's the way the cookie crumbles nowadays. Sir Jony Ive's GUI design for iOS7 has been met with much skepticism (to say the least). But until the company sees the compelling need for an adjustment or reversal, it "ain't happenin' ". So amble over to the feedback page ( http://www.apple.com/feedback/ ) and make your displeasure known to the company, OR make it known by not purchasing its products. Because as long as the iGadgets continue selling as fast as they can make them, they will see no need for change.
BTW, do note you are NOT talking to Apple here. This is just a user-to-user forum.
Edit: for now, you can also try out any of the alternate calendaring apps available in the App Store. -
Aperture 1.5.2 white balance broken and render it totally useless!!!
I really like Aperture a lot. However, Aperture is totally screwed up in white balance. I have been using Aperture for a few months now, but I don't seem to have found any work-around for its erratic white balance.
I shoot using a Nikon D200. To verify my concern of its erratic white balance setting, I shot a piece of white paper under controlled and commom lighting.
1. 6500K light source. D200 set to 6700K for one shot. Calibrate using the white paper using the custom preset setting and take another shot My D200 always nail the white balance with the custom preset function.
2. About 2650K household incandescent light. One shot with Auto WB setting. Another one with Tungsten -1 setting. Yet one more with 2650K setting.
None of them came out right in Aperture. The white-balance eye-dropper is totally useless. I never can equalize the RGB channel. I open them up in Nikon Capture NX and they are all accurate.
Now how complicated can shooting a white piece of paper get? Is Apple reinnovating white balance? Aperture seems to be the only RAW converter in the world that gets this basic RAW functional totally wrong. Is Canon user having the same problem?
Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.9) 3G RAMThe same images out of my D200 looks accurate and fine with Nikon Capture NX. So I doubt that it's a problem of the camera itself.
There are really multiple problems with white balance in Aperture. First, it doesn't interpret the WB setting from NEF raw file correctly. It displays a wrong WB setting to begin with. That asides. Let's assume I don't mind that and have learned to live with it. However, the WB eye-dropper is too erratic. It just refuses to neutralize the point I click on. What's up with that? Lightroom and Capture NX both did it spot on.
I have to admit that Aperture's rendering is slightly better than Lightroom's, but only when I don't need to correct the WB. As soon as I use the WB eye-dropper, it screws it up! This is driving me nuts. I just wasted $300 and a few months of time.
I have started to pray and I'll start going back to church on Sunday if it means it will get fixed...
Can someone from Apple confirm that this problem is being addressed? Switching RAW processor is as expensive as switching camera system. Apple, please, if you're really listening to your customer.

This last Firefox update was totally useless, all Firefox updates destroy my previous tabs without warning and are therefore extremely disruptive. I lose information that will take time to recover. Firefox should give warning to its users so that vital information can be saved before updating their tab system.+
Firefox should not lose your open tabs when it updates. <br /> (That is not to say it always succeeds)
I know Firefox will sometimes remove stored open tabs with updates, and I think Firefox 29 itself had a particular issue with the open tabs.
* Bug 1001167 - Session Restore doesn't handle a corrupted sessionstore.js file properly ('''That is fixed in the current Release Firefox 30''')
Firefox 29 and later should respect the setting to not update without warning you. So you should be able to set it to
* Bug 950357 - The About dialog automatically checks for updates (and then asks the user if he wants to update) even when the "Never check for updates" option is selected. ('''Again that is fixed in Firefox 30''')
* SEE [[Advanced settings for accessibility, browsing, system defaults, network, updates, and encryption#w_update-tab]]'''_update-tab'''
NOTE it has the option to let you choose when to upgrade.
I agree Firefox should warn before update, and it should give users an indication of what is about to change. Use input to make a comment.

Consider using Firefox Sync to backup your open tabs

Although Firefox will do nothing to warn you what features change, note that the Beta release is six weeks earlier and will give you a very good indication of what will be in the Release.

Why is BT service so totally useless?
The broadband service was terrible. Infinity even worse. The installation of the service was like pulling my own teeth with pliers but more painful. The engineer didn't check it so it didn't work from the start after installation in the wrong place and messing up all the wiring. BT then wanted to charge me for the pleasure of sorting it out. After weeks and weeks and a complaint to the MDs office and several engineers later and a cost of hundreds to me in lost days and time BT managed to cobble together a working system. Well done.
It was still so poor that the wi-fi service just about issued a signal to devices a few feet away. Wow. Incredible. From a company with a de facto virtual monopoly. A monopoly since they own and operate most of the exchanges and then service them for all the ISPs. Hmm so it goes wrong when with company X you are still reliant on BT to fix it.
One problem they outsource this to Openreach via Kelly Communications. Who don't train their engineers because BT pay them whatever. BT then try to charge the customer to sort out the problems. Kelly Comms engineers are effectively self-employed so don't want to spend time fixing things just doing bare minimum. No wonder stuff goes wrong. All the time.
A few days ago the poor service that had meant hard wiring a computer to get internet access even though the modem was virtually next to it, turned to a really rubbish one. It started to drop and drop and then stop. Wi-fi according to the sales and customer support teams is a luxury add on. They line test the speed to the box and it gives a speed into the modem so they can say job done but we would like to charge you for an engineer to check it out. Again.
BT are very good on this rubbish upselling. Trying to charge to sort out their own issues and then sell more of the most awful services. But totally lacking on customer care.
In the meantime the BT Hub pumps out about 0.66 Mb on a download speed. Broadband was poor but better than this and cheaper. BT are confused, bemused, baffled and unable to act or to even think about compensating me for the sheer amount of time (and as a result money) spent trying to sort this out while their engineers are a) the wrong kind and not trained in this area b) baffled or can't be bothered and want to get someone else c) mess it up even more. Oh and all the time BT try to charge me for these call outs.
Truly an appalling company. And another thing your web site is atrocious designed to ensure nobody can find any contact information whilst offering advice to fix things online when you are trying to resolve an issue about not getting online.
So the question: why is BT so totally useless? Not sure what that means ...80/20 is what?
But two things spring to mind:
1. the Homehub may be "capable" of delivering a reasonable speed over wi-fi - but it doesn't
2. the modem seems to be taking in top speed but then dramatically slowing down between modem and homehub
3. BT staff when faced with this problem say a) wi-fi is not their concern it is a luxury an add-on or b) they don't know
4. Infinity is oversold and as many others have pointed out the issue is in the sophistry of the wording "up to" what customers want is a reliable, reasonable service that provides something similar to that which is promised - add in a relatively efficient service that does not seek to charge of every engineer visit and to have engineers who may have some idea why a problem is occurring and have an idea how to resolve it.
I could add most people are not technically minded and just want what they pay for - BT fails on almost every matrix -
Mac Mini Intel 512MB 1.83MHz Intel Core Duo totally useless after update
After performing an update of a Mac Mini 1.83MHz Intel Core Duo with 512MB of RAM, the system no longer functions.
The system will boot up and display the desktop, but all of the accessories in the upper-right corner (Date, Volume Control, Eject, etc.) never show up. All it does up there is display solid white, then it doesn't display anything (just displays the menu bar regular background color).
QuickTime automatically launches on startup, and it appears to stay up until I click on QuickTime and select "Preferences", then it closes.
The only other application that launches is iTunes. I can't get ANYTHING else to launch, including Safari, Terminal and Console. I can't even get "About this Macintosh" to come up. It's lucky I set this particular system up some time ago to accept SSH connections, otherwise I don't know how I would be able to see what's going on. I can SSH into the system from another system (another Mini as it turns out). It's with this that I can see what's going on.
I looked at "top" and I keep seeing "ReportCrash" starting up, running for a few seconds, then terminating and then relaunching with another process ID. Evidently something is crashing and it's trying to report the crash, but it can't complete the process.
I looked at the Software Update Logs (located at /Library/Logs), and here is what it says it updated last night:
2008-04-24 23:16:38 -0700: Installed "QuickTime" (7.4.5)
2008-04-24 23:19:09 -0700: Installed "iTunes" (7.6.2)
2008-04-24 23:19:26 -0700: Installed "Front Row Update" (2.1.3)
2008-04-24 23:20:23 -0700: Installed "Safari" (3.1.1)
I go to /var/log/system.log (normally visible from Console) and here is the last 200 lines of the log:

This process and Spotlight are two processes that seem to be crashing over and over.
It seems to me that the update last night pushed the memory profile of the "base" operating system (which would seem to include the 4 items updated last night) above the threshold of what is really required for successful operation of the system. In other words the system seems to be running out of memory and essential processes are unable to run, let along other programs.
Has anyone else run into this problem? I looked and I don't see anyone else who has posted with this problem. Then again, if it's their only system, and their system is as disabled as this system is, they wouldn't be able to get online to report it anyway. And since ReportCrash keeps...well...crashing, Apple wouldn't know about it.
I feel my only alternative is to backup the files off of the system (which I am doing now), then downgrade back to OS 10.4 (the system did originally come with 10.4). I just hope I have no impediments to doing so. If I can't downgrade, I suppose I could do a clean 10.5 install and then don't do any updates, but that's no good either. My only other alternative is to upgrade the RAM, I guess.
Bottom line is this system is truly hosed and totally unusable in it's current state.
Anybody have any better alternatives?
Thanks,
Robert...Welcome to the Apple boards:
I suggest an erase and install and use your backup for any important files you have.
Did you perform a disk check/repair and permissions repair and a PRAM zap before updating? While not required, they are usually necessary to avoid issues.
There are so many reasons for a bad install, that it is impossible to list them all.
Out-of-date software, drivers, etc, haxies, and other software can cause problems.
My three updates were without incident, so it is possible for a perfect update, but unless you supply us with details about your previous system, programs, apps, drivers, etc., it is not possible to figure out what happened.
Again, whenever installing an update to an OS, a clone or other full backup is absolutely necessary, as reading the posts on this board indicate. -
Just installed Firefox on my second Windows machine (running XP Home). Unlike my other installation, every time I start Firefox I get TWO tabs - my home page AND a "Mozilla Firefox Start Page" that contains only a Google search input. I don't need the useless start page, but haven't found anything that tells me how to stop it from loading.
Try This works good for those who aren't computer tech savvy like me
Type about:config in the address bar
Click I'll be careful, I promise if prompted
In the Filter input field type startup
Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
Delete the text string and click OK
Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.
Hopefully this helps!
I just tried this myself and it totally worked for me Good Luck -
Iweb photo pages are totally wacked (plus the program destroyed my sites!)
I am having the same problems that everyone else seems to -- missing images, crashing issues, working very slowly, etc. I'm rebuilding ALL of my pages -- I use these sites for work! What's most disturbing is that the photo pages don't work at all for me -- I can build them, but once I close iweb or it crashes, they come back up nearly blank, no images, and the navigation is really weird and different and won't change, and the space to add photos looks really big and weird. What the heck is going on? Please, I need help!!!! I have to update my sites for business.
I had a problem with photos missing from Photo pages. I just talked to Apple support and we were able to fix the problem for my domain!
The Apple support person said that some domain files are not being properly updated to 2.0. In those cases, peoples are experiencing missing pictures and text as navigation on photo pages.
One indicator if your domain was properly updated to 2.0 is to look at the filename in User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/. In my case the file was Domain.sites and not Domain.sites2 so the initial conversion did not complete properly.
The solution was to replace incorrectly updated Domain.sites file above with the original backup that I made before installing iWeb 2.0. (NOTE - The readme clearly states to backup this file before installing and luckily I did.)
After copying the file to User/Library/Application Support/iWeb, make sure that iWeb is closed (not running). I then double clicked the Domain.sites folder and patiently wait for the Progress bar to complete. (Thank you to another poster on another thread for this suggestion.) You will not receive any success message other than the file will be renamed Domain.Sites2.
After multiple saves and publishes, it appears that everyone now works correctly. The Apple support person was very interested in user feedback and wants more people to report issues via phone. He took my original domain file (via his iDisc account) so he could submit it to engineering for them to study. It sounds like they could still use a few more examples of Domains that fail the initial upgrade to 2.0.
Hope this helps. -
How are you supposed to REPORT THE PROBLEM when it DOESN'T EVEN WORK!!
I clicked it as I got a receipt for something that HAS NOT EVEN BEEN BOUGHT ! (It's funny how apple try to charge me twice for something when I work nightshift and my phones switched off!)
and all that happened was it came up saying "too many HTTP redirects" .
And it won't let me report it ! XGo here:

and follow the instructions to report your issue to the iTunes Store.

Hi, I am new to this support site so forgive me if I am doing it wrong but I have a problem that I am at a loss as what to do. My (very) old mac 10.2.8 won't switch on..I really only use it for music , there is a vast amount of music stored in it and am heartbroken that it won't even switch on. I have no idea where to start on trying to fix it. Can somebody please help me on where to start on fixing it
You might want to try resetting its power management unit; see the following tech notes:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1895
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
The reason I'm suggesting this is that some startup settings are stored and preserved by a tiny battery that lasts about 5 years, inside the computer. When that battery dies, the computer may forget things like what time it is and which disk to start up from. If your Mac is around 5 years old or more, that little battery might be on its way out.
If you can't revive the Mac, don't panic. You can remove its internal hard drive and put it inside a USB/FireWire enclosure so that it can be hooked up to another Mac, and then you can use or copy all of the files and music off of it (assuming the startup problem has nothing to do with the hard drive). -
How do I get rid of the totally useless AVG Secure Search page?
I used to be able to open Firefox and there were all the icond at the top.
NOW, all I get is this STUPID AVG SEcure Search, which occupies all the page. I can no longer get to my bookmarks and this has slowed down my workload considerably.
I understand it was an add-on or extension put out by Firefox but without telling me the disaster that lay ahead.
What I require is a simple way of removing this blot. avgssie.dll?Hello,
Please provide the URL for the website if possible. Also, this may be the homepage you have set so this may be this issue. You can also try safe mode as listed below:
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
Thank you. -
Total useless customer non-service
Second time today I've had to call in, hold time over two hours and 4 transfers on this call and they "claim" that it is resolved.
I bought a large number of items online, and when ordering I highlighted that it was for a business since they were going to have to deliver a large TV. The person on chat noted that, and said that we inform delivery so it would be delivered during business hours. Needless to save, that didn't happen.
When I saw the delivery window, I called and managed to arrange warehouse pickup. They told me that it would show the delivery date until I picked it up, and then it would change to the correct status. Needless to save, that didn't happen.
I called this morning, to get it corrected, so I could get a receipt. The first person I talked to could not understand that I didn't need to reschedule the delivery, I already had the item. The second person I talked to said that they would change the status, and email the receipt. Needless to save, that didn't happen.
The new receipt still showed the TV as undelivered, so the amount for the receipt is incorrect (still). After talking to someone on a garbled connection, it now looks like they have cancelled the TV completely, but the rep (whose name was garbled) said that when the receipt gets emailed, it will show the correct amount and the cancellation is only for the delivery. What are the odds that it's going to be right.
I have the feeling that Best Buy wants me to have a free TV, since they don't want to put it on the receipt, even though they charged my card for it.
Rather annoying way to spend a day.Hello austin_skater,
You situation is certainly not a normal one! I can see how the time you have invested in this, merely to obtain a receipt, could be very frustrating. However, I am glad that the store was able to get you taken care of in the end. My apologies if any inconvenience was caused due to the initial delivery window issue.
When getting items delivered instead of shipped from an order on BestBuy.com, you should receive call the day before your delivery date to be given a 2-hour window. In the event the given timeframe doesn’t work for you, we can sometimes modify your order to Store or Warehouse Pickup, just as you received. When picking it up at one of our warehouses, you should receive documentation confirming you picked up your item. Additionally, if you were logged into your BestBuy.com account when you placed your order, you should be able to view your previous orders (past 18 months max) and reprint those receipts using the “Account” link and then clicking on “Order Status”. The representatives you spoke with should have been able to provide you with this information.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I have documented your information here at the corporate level to be used for improving how we support our customers. If you have any other questions or concerns, please let me know.
Your business is much appreciated,

The question says all there is to be said about it.
This appears to be caused by an over-reaching security policy that has caused nothing but turmoil amongst my development team.
The bug exists somewhere in Mozilla's strategy; You are impeding our ability to reliably test and debug a secure web-app we've been building over the last year. It was frustrating enough fighting with the about:config settings anytime a new version of FF released (every other day recently), but now the issue is compounded.
Pump the brakes guys, you're going the wrong way. We're ditching Firefox-driven testing until you make this right.
EricIs this a new issue in Firefox 26?
When I watch for requests using Fiddler, I'm not seeing a second request when I view source for a few example pages, and the response time implies that I'm seeing a cached page. This may well vary based on cache headers or other factors.
One possible workaround until we figure out what's going on with your application might be to view the source of the rendered DOM. Ctrl+a to select the entire page, right-click, View Selection Source. -
I have just downloaded LION as an update and it is OK, not great but OK. However I am furious because it does not support Photoshop CS for Mac! Great so this update is now going to cost me 500 dollars for a new Photoshop. Well done Apple why is this not supported and why should I buy more software. THIS IS BAD BAD BAD!. Don't update to Lion until you check your other software will run! Does anyone know how to revert back to Snow Leopard or get your money back from Apple.
wildpixFirst off, learn how you must be prepared for Lion before installing:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2465
Next consider one of three courses:
1. If most of your software is supported, and you don't presently have a backup of your older system, get an external hard drive larger than your current,
partition it for enough space for Snow Leopard and your present Lion installation on your hard drive allowing for at least 15% of each partition to have free space after cloning Lion and installing Snow Leopard and your Snow Leopard only compatible applications.
2. If very little of your software is supported, and you don't presently have a backup, get an external hard drive, Install Snow Leoaprd on it, and recover your data on it after using the Migration Assistant to import the data from the Lion on the internal that is compatible with Snow Leopard, and the install applications from your CDs. Once you have it working on your external hard drive, clone it back to your internal, and get a refund from the App Store:
http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact.html?form=account
3. If you have a backup from before installing Snow Leopard, just erase and install Snow Leopard, and contact the App Store support for a refund.

Watch folders are totally useless as they freeze Media Encoder
Hi...
Decided to finally try the Watch folder thing.
Wish I hadn't...
I added 10 watch folders, each with a separate output destination.
then I added the files to the 10 watch folders. All set to output Prores 4444.
I had "Auto-Encode Watch folders" un-checked. But that did NOT seem to interes AME ONE BIT. It started encoding right away. Typical adobe.
Anyway, during encode, AME will just stop encoding a file it is encoding. Progress will come to a halt and AME, of course, wont continue on its own.
It will however, remove the original file from the folder and add it to the originals folder it creates in the watch folder location. Leading the user to believe that file
has been encoded.
To those of you contemplating using this poorly implemented feature, dont. considering the time it takes to setup multiple watch folder and the halts that AME are doing,
I promise you that you are better off manually encoding the files. Or use Apple Compressor. This one does it and might I add a WHOLE LOT faster than AME.
To the AME Development team....
The point of a watch folder is to have AME to something automatically, and NOT overlooking it all the time.
I guess you chose to call it watch folder because the user has to watch over AME while it encodes.
Up your game....Updated Media Encoder and am now running 5.5.1.12 and........ still nothing. Tried to re-create the Watch Folder, restarted, blah blah blah. I should note that I previously (2-3 weeks ago) used the same Watch Folder on 5 different mpeg-2 files successfully. After that I shut down the Mac for winter vacation ever since then it hasn't worked. The only thing that has changed since then was an Apple update to Keynote.
Not that it'll help, but here are some images:

Suggestion regarding listing of apps in Adobe Air Marketplace
I think it would be helpful to folks concerned with security if you included a tab listing those apps who had approved security certificates. That would also motivate those developers who don't have certificates to get them.
